From the Archives: How should Christians understand the Adam & Eve story in Genesis? Is it scientifically plausible that humanity can be traced back to a first human couple? What does it mean for the concept of ‘Original Sin'? These and more questions are discussed by Christian philosopher William Lane Craig, author of the new book ‘In Quest of the Historical Adam', and computational biologist Joshua Swamidass, author of ‘The Genealogical Adam & Eve'. At the end of the show Ruth Jackson talks to Tim Moyler about the evangelistic resource ‘Living & Telling'. In this episode of the Divine Council Worldview Podcast, Ronn Johnson and Mike Chu discuss the creation account of humanity and the implications of being made to be like/as divine beings (the “us” of Genesis 1:26). They “test drive” the possibility that Genesis 1 and 2 offer separate creation accounts, with Adam and Eve being formed and placed into a garden after an existing world had been populated with many plants, animals, and humans. The benefit of this option, as they understand it, is the later narrative of Genesis 4, where Cain appears to enter a populated world after his murder of Abel. Ronn refers to a recent book by S. Joshua Swamidass (“The Genealogical Adam and Eve”) which gives scientific support to the idea that a historical Adam and Eve provide the genealogical ancestry for the entire human race. What if in the "Genesis 1 beginning," things had already began? What if the infamous, "In the Beginning" beginning, happens to be about one small area, guarded by an angel (Garden of Eden). S. Joshua Swamidass, MD, PhD, author of The Genealogical Adam and Eve: The Surprising Science of Universal Ancestry, challenges widely-held presuppositions held about the Genesis creation story and has put his tenure on the line for being forthright with the role that his faith plays in how he sees the world. In this episode he talks how a plain reading of Genesis can still be supported by science. Oh yeah, and he believes in evolution. But according to Dr. Swamidass, humans still lack amazement for the good stuff. How are we not more fascinated by existence in general? Or the existence of consciousness? He demonstrates well the ability to maintain what most of his atheist colleagues would call "good science" while still being a self-proclaimed, "Christian first, scientist second" person. And while he's here, we also manage to talk conspiracies, AI, Mars exploration and how it's hard to get ethics out of science, especially in regards to abortion. At top of episode, Jack Hoey and Ellen Mauro defend some very cynical comments they made on a previous episode about speaking in tongues. Chip Judd challenges their views on a means of prayer he practices every day and claims to be why he is the man he is today. Joshua Swamidass and William Lane Craig have considered the historical Adam. Do their considering Adam and Eve bridge the gap between scripture and science?
This episode continues my series on science and religion. In previous episodes I've interviewed the director of the Vatican Observatory, and a nuclear engineer. On this episode I delve more deeply into one of the leading firestorms in that debate. Creationism vs. Evolution. Dr. Swamidass was raised in a religious evangelical family of young earth creationists. After learning the scientific evidence behind evolution he realized he was being lied to. Now he works within the religious community to challenge the theological basis of anti-science beliefs such as this. S. Joshua Swamidass MD PhD, a physician and a scientist, is an Associate Professor of Laboratory and Genomic Medicine at Washington University in St Louis. His group uses artificial intelligence to advance science at the intersection of biology, chemistry, and medicine. We are talking to Dr Josh Swamidass who has written a fascinating book on Adam and Eve using his scientific background in computational biology and medicine to discuss the tensions between modern science and the narratives of Genesis. What he finds is an interesting take on the origins debate that leaves a lot more room and a lot less tension between the various sides of Christendom. We hope to dig in to Dr Swamidass' conclusions a little further and their implications for our theology. -- Dr. Swamidass MD, Ph.D. is a physician, scientist, and Associate Professor of Laboratory and Genomic Medicine at Washington University in Saint Louis. Evolutionary science teaches that humans arose as a population, sharing common ancestors with other animals. Most readers of the book of Genesis in the past understood all humans descended from Adam and Eve, a couple specially created by God. These two teachings seem contradictory, but is that necessarily so? In the fractured conversation of human origins, can new insight guide us to solid ground in both science and theology? Her first guest Dr. Joshua Swamidass who wrote the book, The Genealogical Adam and Eve: The Surprising Science of Universal Ancestry, discusses the book of Genesis and the theory of evolution, and how these do not need to be in opposition because they both could be true. Furthermore, scientist and Christians need to make room for different ideas and perspectives to come up with knowledge-based solutions. Her next guest Dr. Fuzz Rana wrote the book, Who Was Adam? A Creation Model Approach to the Origin of Humanity, and he talks about how God welcomes critical thinking and in faith we should question things because you can use science to prove the bibles unwavering truth. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/michelle-m-mendoza/message

Many people -- including many religious people -- are quick to dismiss the position of intelligent design as nothing more than attempts to smuggle a pseudo-scientific creationism into the public school system. But is this characterization merited? What precisely is Intelligent Design, and, more specifically, what aspects of modern evolutionary theory does Intelligent Design attempt to challenge? Furthermore, what (if any) evidence is there to support these critiques, and what counter arguments have been made against them? Attempting to sift through all the ideological and philosophical fog, Pat is joined by John DeRosa of the Classical Theism podcast to cross-examine Dr. Michael Behe, molecular biologist, and author of Darwin's Black Box, The Edge of Evolution, and Darwin Devolves. Made famous (perhaps, infamous?) for his proposal of "irreducible complexity" Pat and John press Dr. Behe with a series of objections -- some philosophic, others scientific -- to see how well his claims withstand scrutiny from experts who have seriously engaged the subject. Mentioned Resources You can read Dr. Behe's work and responses to critics at DarwinDevolves.com Dr. Behe also gave a recent talk entitled "An empirical argument for Intelligent Design" at the conference of Science and Faith. He also had an exchange at Texas A&M with one of his critics, Dr. Joshua Swamidass. About Dr. Michael Behe Michael J. Behe is Professor of Biological Sciences at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania and a Senior Fellow at Discovery Institute's Center for Science and Culture. He received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Pennsylvania in 1978. Behe's current research involves delineation of design and natural selection in protein structures. In his career he has authored over 40 technical papers and two books, Darwin's Black Box: The Biochemical Challenge to Evolution and The Edge of Evolution: The Search for the Limits of Darwinism, which argue that living system at the molecular level are best explained as being the result of deliberate intelligent design. The books have been reviewed by the New York Times, Nature, Philosophy of Science, Christianity Today, and many other periodicals. Darwin's Black Box has sold over 250,000 copies and was internationally reviewed in over one hundred publications. Both National Review and World magazine named it as one of the 100 most important books of the 20th century. Behe has presented and debated his work at major universities throughout North America and England. Science has shown that Adam and Eve, if they were real people couldn't have been de novo creations. Science has shown that there was never a population size smaller than 10,000 individuals. We couldn't have all descended from an original couple. Right? Well, contrary to popular belief, you can affirm the de novo Adam and Eve, that all people descended from Adam and Eve, and moreover, that Darwin's theory of evolution (or common ancestry) is true. In this interview, Evan Minton interviews S. Joshua Swamidass of PeacefulScience.org about his soon-to-be-released book "The Genealogical Adam and Eve: The Surprising Science Of Universal Ancestry".
