Here's what to expect in this episode:Your plans won't always go the way you want them to. Embrace the journey!Understanding yourself and your identity. What are the questions you could ask yourself to help you move forward? The role of perspective and choice in overcoming loss and grief. You can't predict the future nor control life. Sometimes all you need is to focus on the present.Your life is not measured by time. Your life is measured by how well you live it, how joyfully you live it.And more! About Robert:Robert is one of those rare individuals who embraces change and lives by a philosophy which he calls “possibility in action” – taking his desire for transformation and putting it into action daily. Born in NYC, Robert has also lived in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Rome and now lives in a small Italian village in the national park of Abruzzo. He received his MBA from Columbia University and was quickly recruited by one of the world's largest sovereign wealth funds, the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) in 1997. It was shortly after accepting the position that he and his wife were confronted with an extreme life event that shook the very foundation of all their hopes and dreams. Desiree, his wife, while pursuing an MD/ Ph.D. was diagnosed with Stage 3B breast cancer right before her 31st birthday. Despite their trials, both Robert and Desiree thrived. Unfortunately, in 2009, after an 11-year valiant battle, Desiree succumbed to metastatic breast cancer. In 2014, Robert decided to leave his comfort zone to pursue what he deemed to be a more purposeful path. Throwing caution to the wind, he pursued a childhood dream to live in Italy and a passion born while caring for his wife, to become a Life Coach. He now lives in the same Italian village his great grandfather immigrated from over 100 years ago and is a certified life coach, adjunct professor and international guest speaker. In this episode, Chris Koddermann interviews two members of the Center for the Neuroscience of Psychedelics at Mass General Hospital: founding director, author, and co-founder of three drug development companies, Dr. Jerry Rosenbaum; and psychiatrist and associate director and director of cognitive neuroscience, Sharmin Ghaznavi, MD, Ph.D. Rosenbaum and Ghaznavi bonded over an interest in rumination, and wondered: How could the plasticity-inducing effects of psychedelics change these negative loops people find themselves in? How important is the ability to break out of those loops – and learn new patterns – when our concept of self is so central to who we are? Ghaznavi is studying the effects of psilocybin on rumination and scanning patients at multiple times throughout the process to track data we still don't really have: how psychedelic-induced neuroplasticity changes over time, and why. They discuss: How much of a role the default mode network takes in the therapeutic benefits of psychedelics: Is it overblown? Hyperscanning, which involves scanning two individuals at the same time, looking for potential concordance in signal and/or an increased alliance between the therapist and patient The Schultes Legacy Project and the work of Stephen Haggarty to explore the potential of largely unstudied psychoactive plants Critiques of the recent ruling on Lykos and MDMA-assisted therapy and the clash between the FDA and the advisory committee: Were they really on the same page? The false dichotomy of neuroscience vs. patient experience: Does the subjective experience actually increase plasticity and other measurable benefits? and more! This week we had such an interesting conversation with Dr. Erica Barnell. Dr. Barnell is the Co-Founder and Chief Medical and Science officer for Geneoscopy, Inc! Geneoscopy is a life-sciences start-up company that leverages eukaryotic biomarkers to non-invasively diagnose, monitor, and treat gastrointestinal disease. The idea for Geneoscopy was conceived during Dr. Barnell's first clinical rotation while earning her MD/Ph.D. at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Specifically, Erica encountered a woman with Stage IV colorectal cancer (CRC) who had never undergone a colonoscopy, citing the inconvenience and burden of attending a traditional colonoscopy as key barriers. Dr. Barnell developed an easy non-invasive stool test to screen for colon cancer and she is now expanding it to the IBD space. She and her team are working to be able to use this RNA screening tool to allow for better prediction of treatment outcomes, disease monitoring and more. We talked to her about developing her initial test, going through the FDA approval process, and then developing a company while still finishing her MD/PhD. We also talked to her about starting a company with her brother and all of the many life changes she went through during it's initial stage as well. We discussed RNA technology and she gave us a quick lesson on it, and finally we discussed her participation in the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation's IBD Innovate Conference earlier this year and how it helped her premier her product to the IBD space and to explore possible partnerships and funding opportunities. Robin and I are big geeks for research and innovation and this conversation with Erica was so fun. In this episode, Joe interviews neuroscientist, board-certified psychiatrist, health tech entrepreneur, inventor, and Co-Founder & Chief Medical Officer at Apollo Neuro: Dr. David Rabin, MD, Ph.D. He talks about his path to psychiatry; his realization that trauma and chronic stress were primary themes at the root of most mental illness; and the creation, research and implementation of the Apollo wearable: the first scientifically-validated wearable technology designed to improve energy, focus, and relaxation based on touch therapy. The idea was born from Rabin asking himself: If we're all starved for touch and constantly feeling unsafe, our bodies prefer a calm, soothed state, and MDMA seems to work by amplifying feelings of safety and essentially telling our brains, "you're safe enough to heal now," could a rhythmic vibration programmed to stimulate touch receptors and put our bodies into a meditative state fool our brains into the same perceived feeling of safety – especially if that stimulation is constant? Would our nervous systems be able to tell the difference? So far, the data seems to prove that this technology works. He discusses what they learned from initial research about how people were using their Apollo wearables; heart rate variability and what changes it; MAPS' Phase III MDMA-assisted psychotherapy results; the idea of the inner healer; using the Apollo in conjunction with ketamine and other psychedelics to ease pre-experience anxiety; and the concept of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy as reverse trauma, the reality that it could stop epigenetic memory, and the question of whether or not the Apollo can do this on its own. Apollo Neuro is continuing their research by running 14 different trials right now, and if you ever participated in a MAPS trial, you're eligible for a free wearable. If you're just curious about trying the Apollo, you can receive $50 off using this link. Click here to head to the show notes page.
In this episode, Melanie Pincus, Ph.D. and Manesh Girn, Ph.D. once again take over hosting duties, this time interviewing Gül Dölen, MD, Ph.D.: Associate professor of Neuroscience and Neurology at the Johns Hopkins University, School of Medicine, and head of the Dölen lab. Dölen largely researches the neuroscience behind social behaviors and is most known for her work in establishing how psychedelics reopen critical periods of learning, and that the true benefit of psychedelics could be in learning how best to reopen those critical periods, how long they're open for, and which therapeutic frameworks and integration practices could best take advantage of them. Her most recent research was giving MDMA to otherwise very asocial (and violent) octopuses to prove that a drastically different species would exhibit typical MDMA-inspired prosocial behavior. And, after discovering that all the classic psychedelics worked to reopen critical periods – that psychedelics are apparently the master key to opening these periods – she's now researching why, through the PHATHOM project (Psychedelic Healing: Adjunct Therapy Harnessing Opened Malleability). You will likely learn a ton in this episode: why critical periods close as we get older and what may impede them from opening more often; how plasticity and metaplasticity relate to each other and why increased neuroplasticity isn't always a good thing; how the length of different psychedelic experiences relates to efficacy; why the different results of MAPS' and Compass Pathways' studies show the importance of therapy; how autism could be related to critical periods; why repeated psychedelic use may make it harder for one's brain to reset; and how important context is in the ability to reopen critical periods – especially around social learning. "They interviewed more than 6,000 American parents and their children from ages eight to thirteen. They wanted to identify what the perception and realities were of the parents' use of technology. It is important to know that about one-third of the children said that their parents spent equal or less time with them than in using their devices. Over half of the children felt that their parents check their devices too often and complained that their parents allow themselves to be distracted by the devices during conversation, something that made a third of them feel unimportant. Many parents too, when asked about their device usage, agreed that it was too frequent and many parents also worried about how this looked to the younger generation. Almost a third concluded that they did not set a good example for their children with their internet devices." Episode Description: We begin by distinguishing adult addiction to pornography from the situation of childhood overstimulation. Central to the child's experience of being able to psychically metabolize pornographic images is the presence of an adult who is able to recognize "the importance of his presence for the child, the value of their mutual contact so that they can together confront difficult questions and dilemmas." Indeed, Franco and Andrea define the traumatic aspect of pornography for children to be the lack of contact with an object, "a lack that renders impossible the working through of the [pornographic] solicitations." We discuss the three models that characterize parents' rule setting for their children - digital orphans, exiles and heirs - and we also address the meaning to the children of their parents' own dissociative over-involvement in screen watching. They end on an optimistic note finding that "we can view technological experiences as an opportunity to elaborate and construct shared meanings." Our Guests: Franco D'Alberton, Ph.D. is a psychologist and child and adolescent psychoanalyst, full member and training analyst of the Italian Psychoanalytic Society (SPI/IPA). He worked in NHS services first as a psychologist in the field of child mental health then as consultant in Psychology at the Pediatric Department of S.Orsola University Hospital in Bologna (Italy). THE THESIS: One can use the same framework used by the gender industry to pretend humans are assigned a sex at birth to say we are assigned human at birth. No one has ever been born in the wrong body. No one is “trans.” Some people are gender dysphoric, gender-confused, gender rebellious or have been conned into believing they are unhappy because they were born in the wrong body. THE SCRIPTURE & SCRIPTURAL RESOURCES: Trapping people in an altered body risks trapping them in permanent defiance to God. Certainly, the Lord can redeem people who have been surgically and chemically altered for the “trans” lie, but only if people allow the Lord to wake them from the lie. Genesis 1:27 27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. When The Party succeeds in forcing people to pretend men are women and the reverse, they are conning, blackmailing or deceiving people into lying. That creates a wedge between them and God. Yes, the Lord is righteous to forgive and He expects us to let Him change us. We don't perform works to get redeemed--we will never deserve redemption and cannot “purchase it” with effort--rather, our works after being redeemed are a sign of abiding in the Lord, Jesus. James 2:14-26 - Faith and Deeds 14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? 15 Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. 18 But someone will say, “You have faith; I have deeds.” Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds. 19 You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that—and shudder. 20 You foolish person, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless[a]? 21 Was not our father Abraham considered righteous for what he did when he offered his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see that his faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did. 23 And the scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,”[b] and he was called God's friend. 24 You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone. 25 In the same way, was not even Rahab the prostitute considered righteous for what she did when she gave lodging to the spies and sent them off in a different direction? 26 As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead THE NEWS & COMMENT: Sometimes The Party is hilarious. “Russian Trolls fractured the ‘women's march.'” No, that march fractured women when they let men pretend to be female. Sometimes it's tragically, cynically amazing: Time.com frets about what pregnancy centers will do with women's data . . . not what Planned Parenthood has already done. Anti-Abortion Pregnancy Centers Are Collecting Troves of Data That Could Be Weaponized Against Women The Figurehead's bosses don't care, either . . . Biden Prosecutes Man for Vandalizing Abortion Clinic, Still Hasn't Arrested Even One Violent Abortion Activist A woman in Iran was fractured to death and Twitter--which bans people for correctly calling a man a man because Twitter pretends it's “Christian hate speech”--just banned a woman for posting a picture of a woman murdered by the Hijab Police. I've just spoken to @AlinejadMasih. @Twitter chose to suspend her account because she shared the picture of #MahsaAmini, 22-year-old Iranian girl in coma after she was severely beaten by the hijab police and later died. Why does Twitter keep punishing Iranian activists? Which brings us to the absurdity in which my $5,000 offer resides. Here is one of thousands of examples. Everyone who pretends that man is a woman is sinning by lying. Everyone who cons, blackmails or deceives others into doing it is sinning by causing others to stumble. Dylan is loved by God just as we are and it is not love to join into another's delusion. A man speaks for women at the Forbes Power Women's Summit. He declared himself a “woman” in March 2022. Now, a few months later, he speaks for women at a women's summit. According to “trans”-activists, if a person ever regrets being surgically or chemically mutilated, they were “never really ‘trans.'” They are the same people who demand there exist absolutely no gatekeepers to kids getting chemically and surgically mutilated because, they insist, once you say you are “trans” that's what you are. In fact, the utterly disgraced Forbes published a hit piece on a teen girl! Chloe Cole is a “transitioner”, a young woman attempting to get her body back from gender-jacking “doctors.” Forbes attacked her because . . . she's autistic. I can use all of their tactics for my debate. Forbes appears to have taken the article down, here's a write-up with some of its lowlights. Yeah, Forbes removed it Another example of an absurdity that makes my case. If you use the made-up, nonsense word “transgender”, you are required to agree in full that this man must be allowed to teach kids while dressed like this. Why? Because, of course, gender is on a spectrum and “breast havers” should not be the only ones with “breasts.” Likewise, I should be allowed to teach in a naked ape suit. Ontario High School Defends “Fetishistic” Large Bust-Wearing Teacher [AUDIO] - TPM's @LibbyEmmons talks to @oann's Kara McKinney @Nefertari_25 about a Canadian school defending a male teacher who wears giant prosthetic breasts to class: "This is a case caring for everyone but the students..." There was a “Let Women Speak Rally” in Brighton. This is what women and families face when they speak the facts about biology. Language Warning: In Brighton today two female "trans" activists openly swear at and abuse a new born baby and his father. Accusing the father of "Raising a little fascist". The #letwomenspeak rally was pelted with smoke bombs and several arrests were made as women voiced their concerns. Disappeared by The Party - An unapologetic lesbian (@JoCampbell69) enraged #Antifa & trans counter-protesters when she stood on a trans BLM flag & smoked at the women's rights rally in Brighton. The trans activists accused the lesbians of being transphobic for not liking penises. #LetWomenSpeak In Boston, home of Harvard University Language Warning: Violent far-left protesters are pushed back by police in Boston after trying to confront those protesting transgender surgeries for children at Boston Children's Hospital. BREAKING: email obtained by @realchrisrufo shows the Boston Police confirming they DID NOT receive a 911 call about a bomb threat at Boston Children's Hospital. Many questions remain. Will any journalists investigate? Harvard University: the place that made Ted Kaczinsky into the Unabomber? The Atlantic, 2022 - Harvard and the Making of the Unabomber; A series of purposely brutalizing psychological experiments may have confirmed Theodore Kaczynski's still-forming belief in the evil of science while he was in college. By Alston Chase Perhaps no figure at Harvard at this time better embodied the ongoing war between science and humanism than Henry A. “Harry” Murray, a professor in Harvard's Department of Social Relations. A wealthy and blue-blooded New Yorker, Murray was both a scientist and a humanist, and he was one of Lewis Mumford's best friends. He feared for the future of civilization in an age of nuclear weapons, and advocated implementing the agenda of the World Federalist Association, which called for a single world government. The atomic bomb, Murray wrote in a letter to Mumford, “is the logical & predictable result of the course we have been madly pursuing for a hundred years.” The choice now facing humanity, he added, was “One World or No World.” Yet unlike Mumford, Murray maintained a deep faith in science. He saw it as offering a solution by helping to transform the human personality. “The kind of behavior that is required by the present threat,” Murray wrote Mumford, “involves transformations of personality such as never occurred quickly in human history; one transformation being that of National Man into World Man.” Crucial to achieving this change was learning the secret of successful relationships between people, communities, and nations. And coming to understand these “unusually successful relations” was the object of Murray's particular research: the interplay between two individuals, which he called the “dyad.” The concept of the dyad was, in a sense, Murray's attempt to build a bridge between psychology and sociology. Rather than follow Freud and Jung by identifying the individual as the fundamental atom in the psychological universe, Murray chose the dyad—the smallest social unit—and in this way sought to unite psychiatry, which studied the psyches of individuals, and sociology, which studied social relations. This kind of research, he apparently hoped, might (as he put it in a 1947 paper) promote “the survival and further evaluation of Modern Man,” by encouraging the emergence of the new “world man” and making world peace more likely. Murray's interest in the dyad, however, may have been more than merely academic. The curiosity of this complex man appears to have been impelled by two motives—one idealistic and the other somewhat less so. He lent his talents to national aims during World War II. Forrest Robinson, the author of a 1992 biography of Murray, wrote that during this period he “flourished as a leader in the global crusade of good against evil.” He was also an advocate of world government. Murray saw understanding the dyad, it seems, as a practical tool in the service of the great crusade in both its hot and cold phases. (He had long shown interest, for example, in the whole subject of brainwashing.) During the war Murray served in the Office of Strategic Services, the forerunner of the CIA, helping to develop psychological screening tests for applicants and (according to Timothy Leary) monitoring military experiments on brainwashing. In his book (1979), John Marks reported that General “Wild Bill” Donovan, the OSS director, “called in Harvard psychology professor Henry ‘Harry' Murray” to devise a system for testing the suitability of applicants to the OSS. Murray and his colleagues “put together an assessment system … [that] tested a recruit's ability to stand up under pressure, to be a leader, to hold liquor, to lie skillfully, and to read a person's character by the nature of his clothing. … Murray's system became a fixture in the OSS.” One of the tests that Murray devised for the OSS was intended to determine how well applicants withstood interrogations. As he and his colleagues described it in their 1948 report “Selection of Personnel for Clandestine Operations—Assessment of Men,” The candidate immediately went downstairs to the basement room. A voice from within commanded him to enter, and on complying he found himself facing a spotlight strong enough to blind him for a moment. The room was otherwise dark. Behind the spotlight sat a scarcely discernible board of inquisitors. … The interrogator gruffly ordered the candidate to sit down. When he did so, he discovered that the chair in which he sat was so arranged that the full strength of the beam was focused directly on his face. … At first the questions were asked in a quiet, sympathetic, conciliatory manner, to invite confidence. … After a few minutes, however, the examiner worked up to a crescendo in a dramatic fashion. … When an inconsistency appeared, he raised his voice and lashed out at the candidate, often with sharp sarcasm. He might even roar, “You're a liar.” Even anticipation of this test was enough to cause some applicants to fall apart. The authors wrote that one person “insisted he could not go through with the test.” They continued, “A little later the director … found the candidate in his bedroom, sitting on the edge of his cot, sobbing.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

He received his B.S. in Chemistry from Duke University in 2016 where he worked in the lab of Dr. Stephen Craig and studied polymer chemistry and material science. He is currently finishing his Ph.D. in the lab of Dr. Sudarshan Rajagopal, a former postdoctoral fellow of Dr. Robert J. Lefkowitz. Dylan's graduate research focuses on the mechanisms underlying biased signaling at GPCRs, specifically, the role of differential receptor phosphorylation (phosphorylation barcodes) and subcellular GPCR signaling in directing functionally selective responses. He primarily studies the chemokine receptor CXCR3 as it has three naturally occurring ligands and thus serves as an endogenous example of biased agonism. After finishing his MD/Ph.D., Dylan plans to complete his residency training in Internal Medicine and subsequently pursue fellowship training in Cardiology. He hopes to continue his research on biased agonism at GPCRs with a particular focus on the treatment of cardiovascular disease. I'm re-releasing this episode because of how critical it is. In my quest to be taught how best to have a fruitful discussion with those hesitant about the vaccine, I interviewed two science communicators, a social engineer, a lawyer, an expert in cognitive biases, and a motivational interview and of all of those, the last one was the most powerful tool for moving the needle on those hesitant to get the vaccine. Motivational interviewing comes from addiction medicine, but using it for vaccine hesitancy actually precedes the COVID pandemic. It is used for new parents who are considering forgoing their newborns' vaccines. Mandates are going to get some to get the vaccine, but for others, a conversation with their trusted physician can be a powerful thing. Dr. Joseph Weiner teaches us how to use it to help our patients with vaccination and other decisions. Dr. Joseph Weiner is an Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry, Medicine and Science Education at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, where he co-directs the four-year curriculum in Physician-Patient Communication and Interpersonal Skills. Thinking and writing about how patients and clinicians communicate with each other has been a major interest in his career. Dr. Antonio Giordano, MD, Ph.D., (https://www.drantoniogiordano.com/) is President and Founder of the Sbarro Health Research Organization (https://www.shro.org/), which conducts research to diagnose, treat and cure cancer, but also has diversified into research beyond oncology, into the areas of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and other chronic illnesses. Dr. Giordano is also a Professor of Molecular Biology at Temple University in Philadelphia, a 'Chiara fama' Professor in the Department of Pathology & Oncology at the University of Siena, Italy, and Director of the Sbarro Institute for Cancer Research and Molecular Medicine, and the Center for Biotechnology, at Temple's College of Science & Technology. In his research throughout the years, Dr. Giordano has identified numerous tumor suppressor genes, including Rb2/p130, which has been found to be active in lung, endometrial, brain, breast, liver and ovarian cancers, as well as interesting synergistic effects of gamma radiation in combination with this gene, accelerating the death of tumor cells. Dr. Giordano went on to discover Cyclin A, Cdk9 (which is known to play critical roles in HIV transcriptions, inception of tumors, and cell differentiation), and Cdk10. Dr. Giordano also developed patented technologies for diagnosing cancer. Dr. Giordano has published over 400 papers on gene therapy, cell cycle, genetics of cancer, and epidemiology. In 2011, Dr. Giordano and his team uncovered anti-tumor agents that might be effective in the treatment of mesothelioma, a cancer caused by prolonged asbestos exposure, by inducing cell death without harming healthy cells. Dr. Giordano has been involved with many other fascinating programs, including digital health work to see if watching a computer animated avatar could assist women to lose weight, as well as analyzing the environmental relationship among toxic dumping and cancer growth, birth defects, and CNS disorders, due to the Camorra (the Neapolitan Mafia) illegally disposing of toxic waste.

Dr. Volpicelli explains the difference between his approach and the Sinclair method, why treatment centers aren't using this effective FDA-approved medication and the neurochemical difference between normal drinkers and binge drinkers or people who abuse alcohol.
I had the honor to welcome my brother @umarue Barrie to the show ( one of the most amazing and meaningful conversations I had in my life). He is an MD/Ph.D. student @ the UT Southwestern. He was born in Sierra Leonne and his family evaded the war and moved back to Guinea with nothing. His father found a way to eventually get the family in the US. As a teenager in Harlem, Umaru managed to defy the odds, stay out of trouble and create a life for himself, one that many people do not have the courage to walk in. I will not spoil it. Tune in.

About Dr. Simone Prömel Simone Prömel is currently a professor of cell biology at the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, Germany. Being a biochemist by training, she completed her Ph.D. at the Institute of Biochemistry at the University of Oxford, UK. During this time, she discovered her love for Adhesion GPCRs and started delineating the molecular mechanisms of the Adhesion GPCR Latrophilin-1. These extraordinary receptors, about which there was not much known other than that they are huge and somehow play important roles in health and disease, fascinated her so much that she continued working on them when she started her own lab at Leipzig University. There she focused on the different modes of action of Adhesion GPCRs and found that they do not only mediate classical G protein signals into cells but can also communicate solely via their N termini. Today, she and her team are working on the questions of how Adhesion GPCRs integrate the different signals on a molecular level and how these are translated into physiological functions in various model organisms. Together with Ines Liebscher, Simone is leading an EU-funded COST Network on Adhesion GPCRs: CA18240 Adher´n Rise. About Dr. Ines Liebscher Dr. Liebscher is a Professor at the Rudolf Schönheimer Institute of Biochemistry at the Medical Faculty of the Leipzig University. During her medical studies in Leipzig, she had her first encounter with an orphan GPCR as the subject of her MD thesis. Being faced with the vast unknown biochemical and pharmacological territory that would be helpful to study orphan receptors she enrolled in the MD/Ph.D. program of Leipzig University. Her postdoctoral work leads her to investigate a whole family of orphan receptors: adhesion GPCRs. With the little knowledge on these receptors available, there were multiple questions to tackle. Starting with proving and characterizing G-protein coupling, Ines spends several years studying the activation mechanism of adhesion GPCRs. In collaboration with great fellow adhesion GPCR scientists around the globe she established a tethered agonist -extracellular matrix- mechano-activation- activation scenario that forms the basis for her current projects that focus on the structural and physiological implications of these findings. Together with Simone Prömel, Ines is leading a COST Network on adhesion GPCRs: CA18240 Adher'nRise. ------------------------------------------- Imagine a world in which the vast majority of us are healthy. A loss of a loved one is never easy as well as the journey after the loss. Neena is joined today by Robert Pardi, who, after his wife died, redesigned his life and reconnected to his true self and heartfelt desires. In this episode, Robert shares a lovely, albeit sad story about a fantastic person who scarred his life most beautifully. Journey with Robert as he walks down memory lane while dropping golden nuggets along the way. Robert is one of those rare individuals who embrace change and lives by a philosophy he calls “possibility in action” – taking his desire for transformation and putting it into action daily. He received his MBA from Columbia University and was quickly recruited by one of the world's largest sovereign wealth funds, the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) in 1997. Shortly after accepting the position, he and his wife were confronted with an extreme life event that shook the very foundation of all their hopes and dreams. Desiree, his wife, while pursuing an MD/Ph.D., was diagnosed with Stage 3B breast cancer right before her 31st birthday. Despite their trials, both Robert and Desiree thrived. Unfortunately, in 2009, after an 11-year valiant battle, Desiree succumbed to metastatic breast cancer. In 2014, Robert decided to leave his comfort zone to pursue what he deemed a more purposeful path. Throwing caution to the wind, he pursued a childhood dream to live in Italy and a passion born while caring for his wife, to become a Life Coach. He now lives in the same Italian village his great grandfather immigrated from over 100 years ago and is a certified life coach. The human brain contains multiple systems designed to protect us and aid in our survival. When we experience trauma the event is stored in our memory as a way to maintain vigilance when we are confronted with a similar situation. In our modern world, the likelihood of being cornered by a sabre-toothed tiger is null but our memory and trigger systems have yet to be updated. To hunt for the latest mind management techniques and attitude alteration strategies, Positive Psychology Podcast Host Lisa Cypers Kamen speaks with three agents of change. Dr. Richard Lane is a Psychotherapist whose work has been instrumental in our ability to heal trauma. He discusses his groundbreaking therapy used to update emotions from his book, Neuroscience of Enduring Change. And, Gay Hendricks and Carol Cline share the second phase of their innovative process to alter attitudes, Conscious Luck and the Conscious Luck Workbook.

It's only within the last decade or so that there's been an understanding and growing appreciation of the ways in which cancer cells interact with the body, and the important clinical impacts of these interactions. Prior to this, the main focus was on developing therapies that only targeted the tumors themselves. However, due to the hyper-evolving nature of cancer cells and their ability to manipulate and adapt to the environment in ways that promote their growth, therapies designed to attack only them don't always provide clinical benefit for the patient. Masoud Tavazoie, MD, Ph.D., is the CEO and co-founder of Rgenix, a company with a scientific approach to this problem that models the interactions between tumors and tumor microenvironments to not only learn more about the ways in which tumors communicate with the body, but also identify specific targets on immune cells that, when provided with novel therapeutics, will bolster the body's ability to mount an effective response against tumor growth. Since the therapies being developed by Rgenix don't necessarily act on the cancer cells themselves but on the body's ability to combat them, they have the potential to treat multiple types of cancer. Rgenix currently has several drug programs in clinical development, and Dr. Tavazoie joins the podcast to discuss each of them, as well as a range of other important and interesting topics in this new and exciting realm of cancer technology. Tune in and visit https://rgenix.com/ for more.
Emeran A. Mayer, MD, Ph.D., David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, delivers an informative overview of the brain to gut connection. Dr. Mayer serves as director,G. Oppenheimer Center for Neurobiology of Stress and Resilience (CNSR); co-director, CURE: Digestive Diseases Research Center; and is an experienced professor of medicine, physiology, and psychiatry. Dr. Mayer attended the Ludwig Maximilian's University in Munich, Germany where he received his MD/ Ph.D. Dr. Mayer completed his residency at the Vancouver General Hospital in Vancouver, Canada and his GI fellowship training at the UCLA/VA Wadsworth Training Program. With a lifelong fascination for research, Dr. Mayer has applied his extensive knowledge toward a career studying the clinical and research aspects of brain-body interactions, with a particularly intensive focus on bidirectional communication between the brain and the gut in regard to health and disease. Dr. Mayer discusses his long career and findings that led to the decision to write his new book, The Mind-Gut Connection. He details particular studies that influenced the material that is discussed in-depth in his books, such as one study that involved testing of individuals who were given a probiotic cocktail and then observed regarding their symptoms and brain function. His surprising findings in this study pushed him to include the gut microbiome in all of his studies thereafter. Dr. Mayer is considered to be one of the world's top expert investigators of the many brain-gut microbiome interactions in GI disorders, with specific regard to functional and inflammatory bowel disorders as well as obesity. Dr. Mayer's exceptional work has been noted worldwide and as such he has enjoyed continual funding for his important research from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) since 1989. The digestive research expert reveals his findings on multitudinous studies of microbial function. He details the use of interventions such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) in his studies, specifically regarding gastrointestinal maladies such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and others. His findings indicated that the CBT was instrumental in improving symptoms for IBS significantly. Dr. Mayer's work concluded that the brain has incredible influence on microbial composition. Dr. Mayer relates how the autonomic nervous system affects the environment of the gut, thus stressors in our lives have a direct impact on our digestive system's functioning, from secretions to peptides, to blood flow, and beyond. Dr. Mayer speaks about causality and the models that they have studied to explain microbiome disorders. He discusses the circular process in which the brain sends signals to the gut, the back and forth signaling that impacts functioning. Further, he discusses in detail gene expression profiles, proteins, metabolites, etc., and the connections between various elements of his research, as well as the collective research, being done globally in regard to these brain/gut issues. The neurobiology researcher provides some background on other studies that focus on teaching the brain to send different signals, as well as diet in regard to gut microbial function. Dr. Mayer states that plant-based diets are by far the best diets for functioning, and the microbiome in general, according to epidemiological studies. He discusses how metabolites are affected by diet, and how gut function will revert when special diets are changed or discontinued. He provides detailed information on specific diets and his thoughts regarding them. As Dr. Mayer states, exposure to antibiotics and dietary patterns of pregnant mothers, etc. all impact microbiomes. He explains the differences that exist in the microbiomes of various and diverse populations of people, and how diet can impact our gut functioning rather quickly once changes are made, for example switching from fast food to a Mediterranean diet, etc. Dr. Mayer is the director of the Gail and Gerald Oppenheimer Family Center for Neurobiology of Stress, and is currently PI of a NIH Center grant on the sex differences in functional GI disorders, on a consortium grant of brain-bladder interactions, and a RO1 grant on brain imaging in IBS. As a leading expert in microbiome studies, Dr. Mayer seeks to continually dig deeper into the connections between the brain and the gut in his quest to find new ways to improve health for everyone.
