With over 20 years of experience in AI, including areas such as machine learning, deep learning, OCR, and speech recognition, Julia holds degrees from UC Berkeley in Mathematics and Cornell University. Additionally, she has authored 10 U.S. patents in the field of AI. Episode Summary: In this episode of The Chris Voss Show, host Chris Voss sits down with Julia, the CEO and co-founder of Glendor Incorporated. The discussion delves into the intricate world of AI, patient privacy, and healthcare data security. Julia shares her insights on how the growing field of artificial intelligence intersects with the medical sector, emphasizing the importance of protecting sensitive medical data while facilitating its use for research and AI model advancements. As the conversation unfolds, Julia talks about her experience in Silicon Valley and how she perceives Utah's burgeoning tech scene, known as Silicon Slopes, and its potential in fostering innovative startups like Glendor. Julia elaborates on the critical issue of healthcare data privacy and the role of technology in safeguarding patient information. She discusses how Glendor's AI technology functions like a "washing machine," cleansing medical records from personally identifiable information to make them safe for data sharing and research use. The conversation touches upon the pressing need for diverse and comprehensive datasets to ensure AI models in healthcare are effective and applicable beyond a few select regions. Julia highlights the significance of a collective effort to balance privacy concerns with the necessity of data contribution for medical advancements. The episode closes with a call to action for increased awareness and participation in the conversation about AI and data privacy. Key Takeaways: Glendor's innovative AI technology enables secure sharing and utilization of medical data by anonymizing sensitive information. Medical records are highly valuable on the dark web due to their comprehensive nature and lifelong relevance. A significant portion of AI models in healthcare rely on data from limited geographic regions, which underscores the importance of broader data contribution. Julia sees great potential in Utah's tech ecosystem, comparing its energy and innovation spirit to Silicon Valley of the 1990s. Participating in safeguarding and sharing medical data responsibly can lead to advancements in AI applications in healthcare. Notable Quotes: "Our focus is protecting patient's privacy while empowering data sharing. That's what we do." "Once the data is removed for most of, let's say, x-rays, then it'll be safe to share this data with the AI company so that it can be used for training." "If we don't start to contribute our data, then we'll be in deep trouble as well." "Please think. Spend time thinking. And thinking about AI, thinking about privacy, and just making it a conscious choice." "We as humans need to think through this. And it's going by us so fast that we don't have time, but we should take time."

Today's healthcare industry stands at the crossroads, dealing with unmatched volumes of sensitive medical information hosted across different systems. The ability to bridge the gaps between these silos to make information accessible and usable remains one of the biggest challenges of all, one for which Amazon Web Services is uniquely positioned. Leading the discussion in this transformation is Dr. Angela Shippy, a prominent physician who has made a transition from clinical practice to leadership in healthcare technology. Her insights into the role of cloud solutions in democratizing healthcare and redefining patient outcomes are enlightening. Medical Data Management with Angela Shippy From Clinical Practice to Cloud Innovation Dr. Angela Shippy's career trajectory is one of a continuous evolution of technology in medicine. After being trained and practicing as a medicine physician, she took to administrative roles with the express purpose of trying to iron out a few wrinkles in the healthcare system. "I quickly learned that the system's complexity could derail patient care, no matter where a patient came from," she explains. "I wanted to make it easier for patients and clinicians by tackling systemic inefficiencies." Her experience during the COVID-19 pandemic proved to be transformative. Charged with overseeing the operational and clinical needs during the crisis, Dr. Shippy first saw firsthand the power of data integration. "We built a dashboard in two days that brought together all the necessary data-patient counts, bed availability, testing results, and even geographical trends," she recalls. "It was the first time we had all the critical information in one place, enabling timely decisions." This experience laid the foundation for her movement to AWS. Realizing that one lesson from the pandemic was that healthcare systems can adopt technology solutions at unprecedented speed, she joined AWS to lead digital transformation at scale. AWS and Management of Medical Data Medical information is some of the most sensitive and fragmented data residing in various formats across an unimaginable number of systems. AWS addressed this with a secure, horizontally scalable cloud infrastructure that allows seamless integration and access to data. Breaking Down Silos Dr. Shippy also points to the burden of siloed data systems that face many hospitals and health systems today. Fragmentation plagues decision-making and ultimately affects patient outcomes. "One of the first steps is helping healthcare providers bring their data together in a meaningful way," she says. AWS offers the tools and knowledge to drive such integration, ranging from managed databases to machine learning models to purpose-built healthcare solutions. For example, AWS supports large health organizations with their own DevOps capabilities as well as smaller providers that rely on external partners. "For smaller customers, we make sure they understand cloud architecture and security so they can make decisions themselves," Dr. Shippy says. Security First and Foremost Considering the nature of medical information, security becomes of the essence. AWS integrates powerful security functionality into its offerings to ensure regulatory standards are maintained and threats are met. As Dr. Shippy says, "Security is not an afterthought; it's a forethought. We work at making it easier for organizations to meet their stringent requirements." Perhaps the most salient insight from Dr. Shippy's experience is the need for scaling best practices to improve health outcomes on a global level. "In healthcare, we've traditionally focused on the one-to-one relationship between clinician and patient," she says. "But we need to move toward a one-to-many model to ensure everyone has access to the best care, regardless of where they live or their income level." Technology as an Enabler Examples include technology, mainly cloud-enabled solutions, that enable this shift. According to Dr. Shippy, ...

Patients care apps - which give patients unprecedented access to their health records - are being rolled out by NHS trusts across the country. You might imagine, says Will Self, that 'this previously unimaginable access to such a wealth of medical data should empower me, make me feel I have a choice, and enable me to assist those treating me by being what every conscientious statistic wants to become: a good patient.' Will argues that, on the contrary, this 'revolution in healthcare' only makes us more impotent, reduces patients to the status of customers and undermines the authority and expertise of medical professionals. But it can be a significantly more serious problem when hackers get your medical data. Last year, about 1 in 3 Americans had their medical records breached, according to the federal government. In this episode, we'll look at how hackers are getting their hands on this highly sensitive personal information, what they're able to do with it, and how you can protect yourself. “Oseh shalom bimromav. Hu ya'aseh shalom aleinu. We came together to discuss what's been happening in Israel since the attack by Hamas on October 7th; what's happening with our own families there; some background about our family histories including emigrating from Ukraine; how we're processing the reaction we're seeing around the world including here in the U.S.; and most importantly, how we can help. That's where the fundraiser that Naomi is organizing, Equipment For IDF Reserves, comes in. We are raising money on behalf of Naomi's friends, Yonatan and Evelyn Seltzer, who have recently been mobilized as part of the 360,000+ reserve soldiers recruited by the IDF to fight Hamas. They are in need of basic and defensive equipment, which has been difficult to acquire and distribute quickly. Like many of their fellow reservists, they're scrambling to acquire these essentials and end up paying for it themselves. Please consider helping Yonatan, Evelyn, and other soldiers like them buy basic goods (including socks, underwear, hygiene products, warm clothing, etc.) in the next few weeks as they prepare to fight Hamas. Here is the link: spot.fund/EquipmentForIDFReserves   Additionally, Dr. Harris is in the process of providing low fee or pro-bono services to victims of the war in Israel as well as their families. Databases are currently being created that many therapists are joining to provide services to these individuals. If anyone would like further information, they may contact Dr. Harris through her website at www.ericaharrisphd.com.   Dr. Erica Harris is a licensed clinical psychologist whose areas of expertise include trauma and PTSD, anxiety, depression, relationship conflict, addiction, coping skills, and life transitions. Dr. Harris also provides crisis treatment for patients struggling with situations in the moment, in order to help them cope more adaptively.   Dr. Naomi Yudanin is a computational biologist by training who describes her vocational background as a "professional data nerd building a better healthcare experience for all." Progress in healthcare and medical research requires a lot of data. In the era of Big Data health data is among the most valuable and the most private information anyone can have. Two major hurdles with finding quality medical data are access to that data in a private and ethical way as well as bias on the data due to underrepresentation of women, certain racial or ethnic groups. In this episode I talk to Dinidh O'Brien about how donateyourdata.org and DataLake are trying to solve this problem with a patient-first approach to sourcing medical data for research. Data Lake is an EU-funded start-up creating a global medical data donation system based on blockchain technology, with privacy and informed consent as fundamental pillars. We discuss this data donation framework and how it addresses the issues of privacy, consent, data monetization and working to minimize biases. Dinidh explains how they approach patients to opt in, how they vet organizations that request access to this data and how they plan to expand throughout Europe and the US.
