We start out by looking into the complex intersection of politics and disaster recovery. Recent events, particularly the devastating impacts of Hurricane Milton—following closely on the heels of Hurricane Helene—prompt a reflection on how political narratives can distort the truth of emergency assistance. As communities in Florida and the Carolinas grapple with severe weather damage, misinformation begins to circulate, largely perpetuated by certain political factions. We recount how, after Hurricane Helene, a disinformation campaign questioned the adequacy of federal disaster relief funds, falsely claiming that victims would only receive $750, while overlooking the extensive resources offered by FEMA and undermining the very science that informs our understanding of these disasters. This politicization of disaster relief not only misleads the public but can also hinder individuals from seeking necessary assistance when they most need it. This also highlights the broader implications of anti-science rhetoric that has emerged from conservative leaders, particularly their attempts to undermine the value of scientific forecasting and climate change data. Through a critical lens, we analyze how the truth about disaster recovery funding and the context surrounding these storms is manipulated to serve narrow political agendas, which ultimately jeopardizes community welfare. Transitioning into a different but equally pertinent theme, we share insights from Douglas' recent public appearance at the Maumee Valley Unitarian Universalist Congregation, where he spoke on Secular Humanism. He navigated the nuances of being a secular humanist, a perspective that operates outside the confines of organized religion while advocating for humanist values rooted in reason, empathy, and a shared commitment to community well-being. We explore what sets secular humanism apart from Congrgational humanism, addressing its historical context and the societal implications of being considered an "ugly stepchild" in the wider humanist movement. Douglas emphasizes the importance of building bridges rather than barriers amidst differing worldviews. He recounts his experiences with the Secular Humanists of Western Lake Erie, the organization he represents, and how we strive to create a welcoming environment for all individuals regardless of their belief systems. His remarks provoke thought on the balance between fostering community and respecting diverse beliefs, even as we remain steadfast in our commitment to social justice and ethical responsibility. Who did Jesus Christ fight against? Devil in the Temptation and Peter when He said "Get beging me, Satan!  Other than that it was constant warfare with the Jews. Non-Stop.  This is a reflection of Genesis 3:15. There is a movement to reduce battle to spiritual "exercises:" Prayer, fasting, feeding the hungry, housing the poor, and Interfaith coalitions.  These find approval with the antichrist forces because they are either antichrist themselves (Look up Interfaith Coalitions in the Bible), or are a substitute for the real fight. Jesus Christ goes to the heart of the matter. It is not the Republicans, Democrats, Communists nor Secular Humanists who are Satan's representatives on the earth. The Jews are the enemy of Jesus Christ, and therefore of all faithful Christians. We will not change the world -- discipline the nations under Jesus Christ -- until we are willing to face and do battle against Satan's synagogue and the devil's own children, and their allies. Hilary Clinton is an example of a non-Jew who has sided with the Jews, her daughter married a Jew, as did Trump's daughter and as did all of Biden's children.   The Adelson family money supports Republican candidates, as long as they are pro-Jew and pro-Zionism.   Over fifty members of Congress have allegiances to that foreign Zionist entity (which is mis-named). We must inculcate a vision without ourselves (the Christian Church and the White Race) where Jesus Christ is explicitly our political Monarch as demanded by the First Commandment: “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.  You shall have no other gods before Me." Exodus 20:2-3 Moses worshipped Jesus Christ: "So the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, just as a man speaks to his friend. " Exodus 33:11. No man has seen the Father, it was Jesus Christ that Moses conversed with.   Fritz Berggren, PhD Bloodandfaith.com

Five Common Reasons People Leave Christianity 1. The Problem of Evil The issue of Evil is a serious one that Christianity is uniquely qualified to answer. However, most Christians fail to provide a valuable response to this when confronted on the issue. So what is the problem of evil? Thesis: If God is good, then how could evil exist? If God is all good, then He is not all powerful, and if He is not all powerful, then He is not good. This question often comes in response to moments of greatest sorrow and tragedy. Comfort can only be found in relationships with others and a trust in the future God holds. The explanation of Evil will never be of much comfort, just like an explanation of the exothermic reactions of the chemicals in a grenade will never satisfy the heartache of a grieving family mourning the loss of their son, brother, husband, and father in times of war. This explanation CANNOT bring peace in of itself, but it can provide clarity to those who truly wish to understand God, and perhaps attempt to gaze into His metaphorical face and see if the face staring back at them is indeed “good”. The Explanation: Calling God all powerful can often lead to some failures in logic, if improperly understood. God is all powerful in that He exists outside of space and time and is the uncaused cause of all that happens. In this He can do “anything”. However, if Truth, Logic, Mathematics, and Justice are direct imports from God's essence, as a Painting is a reflection of the mind of the artist on a canvas, then God cannot lie, make a square circle, nor can He commit evil, no more than can a rock be a blade of grass. God allows man free will. This free will is apparently more important than human comfort or flourishing. Indeed, it separates us from the inanimate. If we did not have free will, we could not love or speak truth but merely react to stimuli as does a venous fly trap, opening and closing in response to stimulus. So in addition to love, hatred, apathy, and nihilism are also possible. If God were to intervene, not only would we not have free will, but we would not know what evil looked like in its complete form. This knowledge gives us the informed consent required for a relationship with a God who is the source of all good. This relationship is one of incredible spiritual intimacy and must be a complete surrender. This, is the reason evil exists. The question should not be why God allows evil, but rather why He allows free will. In this, we can find a complete answer. Does it satisfy you? Again, nothing can satisfy the loss that usually comes with this question, except to fill it with other relationships. In this aspect, God and the family of God can soothe the pain, but not take it away. 2. The Christians In Church Another common reason given for people leaving the church is the behavior of Christians. One poll by Brandon Flanery published on the site baptistnews.com had politics and other believers as 2 of the 3 highest causes for leaving the church. 3. The God of the Old Testament Many people do not realize the culture of the day. Common misconceptions: Killing Your Own Children: 53:35-55:09 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_FCdrnP3X8&t=2781s Other religious practices Women and God (Divorce, Dowry, etc) 4. The Anti-Intellectualism The conflation of science and scientism has been a real factor in the cultural debate on the inerrancy of Scripture. Many Christians have ceded the linguistic territory of Science to the Secular Humanist and instead embraced a vain, and frankly, lazy approach to “faith” as this nebulous head planted in the sand mantra instead of a belief in facts. Christian scholars and Secular Humanist Scholars have the same evidence. How we interpret that evidence is largely affected by worldview. Take the Big Bang, for an example. The words Big Bang were originally a pejorative. Only recently did the Secular Humanist even believe that the Universe had a beginning. Even today, we are discovering that there are galaxies further away than previously imagined. The JWST telescope has created some serious issues for the Big Bang Theory in the context of 14 Billion years. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Ynwc0bajfjk The theory has to keep changing to fit the evidence that the universe could not have formed the way the Secular Humanist interprets the evidence. But even with this evidence in our hands, the church has widely failed to pursue knowledge in a domain that was previously dominated by Christians: Galileo, Copernicus, Newton, Faraday and more. This has led to many people “deconstructing their faith”. https://youtu.be/-GuGcPb2jjQ https://baptistnews.com/article/i-asked-people-why-theyre-leaving-christianity-and-heres-what-i-heard/ 5. The Desire for Freedom And the number one reason for leaving the church in the modern day, by some polls, is the issue of Biblical Sexual Purity. Whether it's the issue of waiting for marriage or an alternative to Biblical marriage, the issue of Freedom is a salient stumbling block. Final Thoughts: One Thing To Remember For The Week:

“Types of Pastoral Care Practices There are various ways to practice pastoral care, including: Premarital counseling: Premarital counseling helps to prepare couples for unity in marriage. Pastors may recommend Bible verses, books, articles, and discussion topics for couples to review and pray about as they plan their life together. Weddings: Pastors performing weddings play the special role of celebrating and instituting a covenant relationship. Hospital visits: Visits to hospitals and care facilities can help those who are sick or injured to feel supported and remembered by their church family. Funerals: By facilitating funerals and caring for individuals and families in the grieving process, church leaders share the burdens of those experiencing the loss of human life. Serving the community: Church leaders can lead their congregation in providing food, clothing, and other material needs—as well as community services and gatherings—for local neighbors. In meeting with and listening to the community, churches can better connect, share the gospel, and partner with their neighbors. Birth and adoption celebrations: Meeting new parents with practical assistance like meals, diapers, financial resources, and childcare can help families care well for their children. Sustained support along the journey of parenting is another way that pastoral care can support families for long-term thriving. Spiritual direction: This pastoral care practice involves prayerful companionship and discipleship that points a person to scripture and fosters spiritual growth. -https://calvinseminary.edu/blog/difference-pastoral-care-counseling/. “What is a Humanist Chaplain? A Humanist Chaplain is a secular clergy person who provides comfort, guidance, and emotional support without relying on any religious doctrine or dogma. They also strive to promote reason, ethics, and compassion in the lives of those they serve. Humanist Chaplains usually have a staff position at universities, hospitals, prisons, or other settings where chaplains are typically present. Why is the Role of Humanist Chaplain Important? The role of a Humanist Chaplain is crucial as they provide emotional and moral support to individuals who identify as nonreligious (or anyone who wants it, regardless of their beliefs). They serve as a comforting presence offering guidance and counseling in times of crisis, grief, or ethical dilemmas. Their work helps to foster a sense of community and belonging among people who may feel isolated or misunderstood because of their secular beliefs. Humanist Chaplains contribute significantly to the diversity and inclusivity of moral and spiritual perspectives in society.” -https://nathanbweller.com/what-is-a-humanist-chaplain/. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/antonio-myers4/support

On the topic of Dennis Prager, it appears to me that he is someone deeply confused on the topic of sexuality. After all, in society, we have men who go to extreme lengths to look like a woman, but fail miserably like you will see in today's show. Dennis Prager, sat down and had a conversation with Dave Rubin, in which he revealed that he is really a secular humanist. He claimed that for God's Word to be true, it has to be logical. Logical to who? God is Truth and truth cannot exist outside of logic. When he talks about homosexuality being accepted before the Bible, that's the whole point. I also read through a few emails from listeners, one of which made me very uncomfortable, but I do my best to answer. What does God's Word say? Matthew 5:27-3027 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.'[e] 28 But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29 If your right eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.Ephesians 5:25-28  - ESVHusbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.1 Corinthians 7:3-5 ESV  The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.Episode 1,529 Links:Dennis Prager supporting homosexuality, and more (full interview in description field“Trans” influencer calls out JK Rowling calling her words ‘hurtful' and saying “She should stick to what she knows.” “She's a woman and so I'm also a woman. The American Church must come to the conclusion that we have been bamboozled by the progressives over a hundred years ago. Once we humbly acknoledge and accept this truth then we will rise up to do what we must. The Evangelical Church in America rather than stand first in its calling to disciple the nation, we instead out sources a crucial part of discipleship to the state. As a result secular humanists seized the opportunity and started to disciple this nation into secularism and hopelessness. This was a mistake then and it is a mistake now to continue to look to the state for education. This can be shown by giving the descent of all Roman emperors from Antoninus Pius onward, from Arrius Piso (or his immediate family), the main creator of Christianity. And the other paper will show the direct descent of no less than 60 popes from Arrius Calpurnius Piso. “Council for Secular Humanism According to the Council for Secular Humanism, within the United States, the term "secular humanism" describes a world view with the following elements and principles:[8] Need to test beliefs – A conviction that dogmas, ideologies and traditions, whether religious, political or social, must be weighed and tested by each individual and not simply accepted by faith. Reason, evidence, scientific method – A commitment to the use of critical reason, factual evidence and scientific method of inquiry in seeking solutions to human problems and answers to important human questions. Fulfillment, growth, creativity – A primary concern with fulfillment, growth and creativity for both the individual and humankind in general. Search for truth – A constant search for objective truth, with the understanding that new knowledge and experience constantly alter our imperfect perception of it. This life – A concern for this life (as opposed to an afterlife) and a commitment to making it meaningful through better understanding of ourselves, our history, our intellectual and artistic achievements, and the outlooks of those who differ from us. Ethics – A search for viable individual, social and political principles of ethical conduct, judging them on their ability to enhance human well-being and individual responsibility. Justice and fairness – an interest in securing justice and fairness in society and in eliminating discrimination and intolerance.[27] Building a better world – A conviction that with reason, an open exchange of ideas, good will, and tolerance, progress can be made in building a better world for ourselves and our children.” I am a figurative Bible that people read and study! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/support

"Secular humanism provides a cosmic outlook—a worldview in the broadest sense, grounding our lives in the context of our universe and relying on methods demonstrated by science. Secular humanists hold that ethics is consequential, to be judged by results. Secular humanism is a life stance, or what Council for Secular Humanism founder Paul Kurtz has termed a eupraxophy: a body of principles suitable for orienting a complete human life. As a secular life stance, secular humanism incorporates the Enlightenment principle of individualism, which celebrates emancipating the individual from traditional controls by family, church, and state, increasingly empowering each of us to set the terms of our own lives." -Antonio Myers --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/support

First off, what does the Bible say about serving two masters? Wait, you may say, this has nothing to do with serving two masters! But it does, you cannot serve a secular humanist ideal and God at the same time. Secularism at its core IS Humanism. Now, to what the Bible has to say on this matter, Matthew 6:24: “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” Now, Secularism came out of the 1800s during the zenith of the enlightenment. For those who are fuzzy on what the enlightenment entailed, this name is given to the era that elevated the notion of Reason, either God's or Man's. The European Enlightenment focused on Man's Reason, while the United States focused primarily on the notion of God's Reason. In the 20th Century, the Christian Enlightenment sent men to the Moon, and missionaries and aid to the nations. The Secular Enlightenment sent Jews to the ovens and dissidents to the gulags. We also have the Secular Enlightenment to thank for “Critical Theory”, Utilitarianism (modern prisons), Marxism, Nazism, Facsism, Stalinism, and more. Some Questions from each avenue of thought:Theology: Was Jesus a Secularist? What does the Bible say about religion and politics? Well, first off, please note that the Sanhedrin was the political leadership of Christ's time. While Christ did not start a Maccabean revolt, Christ also was not silent on the issues of the day. He regularly sparred with the Sadducee faction that was the majority seat holder in the Sanhedrin. Paul also played politics when he pitted the two parties against each other in Acts 23:6. “But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee: of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question.” Christ spoke of overbearing taxes in Matthew 17:24-27 “24 And when they were come to Capernaum, they that received tribute money came to Peter, and said, Doth not your master pay tribute? 25 He saith, Yes. And when he was come into the house, Jesus prevented him, saying, What thinkest thou, Simon? of whom do the kings of the earth take custom or tribute? of their own children, or of strangers? 26 Peter saith unto him, Of strangers. Jesus saith unto him, Then are the children free. 27 Notwithstanding, lest we should offend them, go thou to the sea, and cast an hook, and take up the fish that first cometh up; and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of money: that take, and give unto them for me and thee. and in Matthew 22:20-22 20 And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription? 21 They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's. 22 When they had heard these words, they marvelled, and left him, and went their way.” In context, both of these have different meanings, but neither of them support the idea that Christ was some how a Secular Humanist who believed that the man made state was in a moral authority above God's. Rather instead these verse support the doctrinal principle that Christ was answering each situation in a way that furthered the Gospel. Peter and the Apostles retorted to arrest by the Sanhedrin in Acts 5:29: “We ought to obey God rather than men?” This along with the Standard of Romans 13:1-7 set a rubric for the Christian to follow: “13 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. 2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. 3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: 4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. 5 Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. 6 For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God's ministers, attending continually upon this very thing. 7 Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.” From the Chair of Philosophy one must ask can the worship of Man's Wisdom coexist with a submission to God's Wisdom? 1 Corinthians 3:19 says: “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness. “ Remember why they want you to live a Secularist life: If you're silent about your beliefs, then they are free to espouse theirs. Secular Humanism is almost an oxymoron in this one point: It is a religious conviction. Now, Man may be God, effectively, in their religion, but this does not make this any less of a faith statement. On the note Culture, what kind of Culture does a Secularist Christian create? Pew Research shows us the aftermath of a society that is inhabited by Secular Christians: https://www.pewresearch.org/religion/2019/10/17/in-u-s-decline-of-christianity-continues-at-rapid-pace/ The further we get away from an outwardly Christian lifestyle, the further our culture slides. Christ said that we were to be the Salt and Light. In Matthew 5:13 it says: “Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.” From the Economic side of things, we should note that we only have so much time on this Earth. What are we valuing when we choose to live a life that is devoid of Christ in public. Some Christians fall into the trap of a false sincerity, this is not what I'm referring to. We need to be about the business of discipling. Are we not bought with a price? We must be prepared to die for Christ, let alone be discomforted. We are bought with the blood of Christ, too precious of a price to waste our lives being secular. They aren't afraid to speak of their religion, why should we be? Simply maintain a Christ like tenor in a bold Daniel like lifestyle and the Holy Spirit can bring revival.

As organized religion loses its “market share” among traditionally religious societies, Humanism is on the rise and is one of the fastest growing movements and life philosophies in the world today. While many who consider themselves “religious” are largely unfamiliar with the origins, history, and beliefs of the movement often called Secular Humanism, the growth of this philosophy is such that all should seek to better understand its core characteristics. Listen to this short episode to learn more about the Humanist movement and its approach to life and religiosity.

“H7. Children shall not be subjected to physical and mental abuse, nor to religious or political indoctrination by parents or others. The rights of children should be codified in a charter of children's' rights. While parents, guardians and elders have a responsibility towards their children (and vice versa) this responsibility does not give a carte blanche for them. Today most legal jurisdiction interdict physical and sexual abuse of children by anybody including parents. This is as should be. But what the law does not do is to prevent the political and religious indoctrination of children. Religions are allowed to conduct ceremonies like Baptism in Christianity, circumcision in Judaism and Islam and the thread ceremony of Hinduism. Children are incapable of understanding what is done to them in such ceremonies. Humanists should deny the existence of such rights for parents, priests and the like. This rule does not mean that children should not be inculcated in ethical standards. But these should be a basic non-religious kind of ethical standards such as those that Humanists promote. There is still no formal charter of Children's' Rights. The biggest impediment to the creation of such a charter will come not from theists who will not give up their right to automatically impose their religion on their children.” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/support

George Washington didn't think so. He gave very specific calls for religion and morality to impact politics. Let's learn together!Support the show

Argument 1# “Pro-Lifers want to control Women” (Not really an argument, but let us deal with it. In a story from the guardian, (Slide 1#) a new poll says that Pro-Lifers simply want to control women's bodies due to misogyny. They base this purely on slanted questions that are clearly aimed at political issues, and not in a way that would divine between egalitarian and misogynistic traits. Article here: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/aug/22/a-new-poll-shows-what-really-interests-pro-lifers-controlling-women This is simply not the case. Just because Pro-Lifers do not want to see a government mandate on companies to enforce diversity hiring does not mean that we hate women. It just means that we have an intellectual standard. Likewise, Pro-Lifers are no more advocating against a woman's autonomy in the prohibition of infanticide as we are in the prohibition of homicide. This is an intellectually consistent view. Argument 2# Some will simply say that the infant in the womb is a clump of cells. Or even then, they may be a human clump of cells, but not a person. As is done here by Clair White over at Medium.com: https://medium.com/@ClaireJWhite/a-clump-of-cells-71071af908d9 To the first argument, genetically, this is undeniably a natural human with his or her own DNA and is in the most vulnerable stage of life. Cancer may have its own DNA as some will point out, but that is a silly comparison at best because Cancer is an unnatural thing that is from YOUR DNA that you received at conception in your mother's womb. Argument 3# The next issue raised by people like Clair White, is the issue of personhood. When does someone become a person? At consciousness? How about unconscious patients on life support? Did these lose part of their humanity? How about those who are mentally deficient? Is this consciousness and value of human life on a sliding scale? How about babies with deformities? Should we remove them from the gene pool? The Secular Humanists in Germany toyed with these ideas in the early parts of the last century and Europe is headed back in that direction now. This is not a slippery slope, this is a proven and repeated trajectory. Playing with the idea of personhood allows for great injustices in the name of so called science and progress. We saw it in Nazi Germany, Communist Russian, we see it today in China, and here in the west with the blackmarket for embryonic tissue for stemcell research. Even if the infant is not a full fledged person, the argument falls apart. What do we do to those who poach or kill dolphins? Eagles? Even the destruction of some bugs and turtles land the perpetrator in the slammer. Is not the human embryo even more valuble than the embryo of a dumb animal? (Yes people have been jailed for damaging eggs of birds, turtles, etc) Argument 4# Another common claim that is made is that Pro-Life means Pro-Birth and nothing more, as articulated by prochoiceamerica.org in this article. (Slide 3#) https://www.prochoiceamerica.org/campaign/the-hypocrisy-of-the-pro-life-movement/ Again, they are conflating disagreement in how to fix these other problems with intellectual inconsistency. This is not the issue at hand. The Violinist Argument will provide us with some good context for several claims and arguments. Pulled from(https://prolife.stanford.edu/qanda/q2-2.html) “Educated pro-choicers who claim that the question of fetal personhood is irrelevant because the mother's right to an abortion would trump the fetus' right to life even if he is a person may bring up Judith Jarvis Thompson's famous “Violinist Analogy” or some variation of it. In this somewhat contrived story, a man (a violinist, in the original formulation of the analogy) is dying, and the only way to prolong his life is to hook him up to another human and siphon off some of that person's blood or kidney function (or something) as a form of life-support. He must remain in this state for the several months necessary for medical technology to reach the point that it can intervene and completely resuscitate him. So the music lovers, in their zeal to save the violinist, find some random woman who happens to be the only person in the world with the right blood type. As she sleeps in bed, they hook her up to the violinist. The woman wakes up to find herself strapped down to the bed and attached as a form of life support to a complete stranger, essentially a human parasite, lying next to her. Unless she severs the tubes, she can't move or go anywhere indefinitely, forced to have her energy siphoned off by the parasite. Most people's (correct) reaction is that the woman has the right to free herself of the violinist, even though she knows that this will result in his death. The idea is that this situation is analogous to an unplanned pregnancy: against her plans, the woman finds herself supporting the life of an unwanted person and has the right to deprive that person of her bodily support, regardless of what the result is for the parasite.” Argument 5#: I have the right to abortion because the baby is a stranger and a leach that has appeared unplanned, unannounced, and unwanted. Unplugging a stranger form life support is not an active act of murder, but rather a passive act of retracting care. No one believes that retracting life support from a terminally ill patient is necesarrily murder. The imposition on the one giving life support is not a morally necessary one, so one person's need for life support does not mandate another's autonomy. So this is a false equivalence. The proper analogy would involve dismembering the stranger, not unplugging them. One is an passive act that frees you of the responsibility (like adoption), and the other is an active act of murder. Argument 6#: I did not consent to the pregnancy, just the sex. The lack of consent argument holds little water. Consider this analogy: Someone playing baseball in the street may not have consented to the property damage caused by an accidental window break, but they WILL have to face the repercussions. If your child was conceived by a consensual act of procreation, then this is no different. You may attempt to argue that you have no responsibility for your actions and that you do not want a child. If so, adoption is an option for you. However, what is not an option, is jamming a pair of forceps into your baby's head or the head of your irate neighbor (How do you get to kill a 3rd party for your convenience when your actions caused the situation?).There are repercussions for actions. This also holds for rape and incest, 1% of cases. The principle is the same, but the blame is not on the woman, but the man. How does an evil act, committed by a more powerful person onto a vulnerable person, validate another evil act perpetrated by the original victim, onto an even more vulnerable person? If the baby in the womb is a person, then they have as much right to not be physically violated and ripped to shreds while alive as the woman had to not be raped. Argument 7#: I have autonomy over my own body. Correct! So does the infant. Imagine this, if turbulence on a commercial flight causes a stranger to stumble onto your lap, you do not have the autonomy to stab this person in the head and suck their brains out. In the poor analogy above, this unnatural position is temporary like pregnancy. Pregnancy, however, is the natural outcome and end to sex. Your autonomy extends to contraceptives, abstinence, adoption, or surgery to prevent you from being able to conceive. When did murder enter into the equation of personal autonomy? Argumen 8#: If I cannot be compelled to give an organ to a stranger, or even my own child, how can I be expected to give my uterus? Three points here: 1. A kidney transplant is permanent, pregnancy is 9 months. While a pregnancy does affect some bodily changes, these are incomparably benign to a lifetime of dialysis if kidney 2# stops working. 2. The issue of ontology is worth thinking about here as well. What is the purpose of the kidney? It works within the original owner's body to perform a critical function. You are partially impaired without both kidneys. Transplanting a kidney is an extraordinary and extra-natural act. The uterus, however, has a different purpose. It was made to hold the human life that dwells within for the duration of 9 months. The natural purpose of the uterus is to shelter that life. This is perhaps a weak argument, but one formed in response to a weak attack on the Pro-Life stance. 3. None of the above arguments deal with the issue of the infant's vs the organ recipient's state of health. The person in need of a kidney requires someone else to give up part of a healthy donor body to provide two people with compromised physical capacity. Without the donation, there would simply be one live non-donor, and one dead person who was in need of a kidney. The act of actively destroying the baby in the womb leaves one mother with a statistically higher chance of suicidal ideation (outside of 5~10 years), and a dead baby in the vacuum cleaner. Carrying to term allows for both individuals to live physically whole lives. Argument 9#: I have reproductive rights. That is true! But pregnancy is not reproduction, conception is. Even if someone took your agency in the case of rape or incest, the issue is not made better by infanticide.

#19: Is Reality Secular? A Former Secular-Progressive Professor Says No!

Dr. Mary Poplin was a self-described “radical progressive Marxist”  professor before coming to faith in Christ by meeting Jesus in a dream. Since then she has worked tirelessly to integrate biblical truth and the field of education as a professor of Education at the Claremont Graduate University. She has also authored numerous books on Christianity and higher education. Here we talk about her most recent book Is Reality Secular? Testing the Assumptions of Four Global Worldviews. In this podcast we discuss: Defining a “worldview”  How she identified the four worldviews and decided to write about them Summarizing the four worldviews: Materialism, Secular Humanism, Pantheism, and the Judeo-Christian worldview Why it is so important for Christians to understand these four worldviews Her journey from a radically secular professor to Christ's follower Her time volunteering with Mother Theresa, and how this influenced her How God convicted her to begin teaching what is true, integrating biblical truth into her teaching Her assessment of current secular higher education after 40 years as a professor How she had to rethink ideas of “justice” from a biblical perspective  Her struggle to distinguish between Secular Humanism and Christian thought  How Christianity is excluded from higher education Why professors often promote their worldview as the only answer to life's big questions How her Secular Humanist worldview shaped her thinking about training elementary and secondary school teachers, and how her thinking changed once she became a Christian Advice to students in identifying different worldviews their professors are presenting The best chapters in her book to read for students in the sciences, in the social sciences, the humanities, and the applied sciences How the Judeo-Christian worldview best fosters a flourishing university and society How students can thrive if they have professors promoting other worldviews, and make a difference in the lives of their non-Christian professors How students can find Christian professors like Mary, and the importance of campus fellowships Why going to a “Christian” college doesn't solve the problem for students Why the university is not really a “marketplace of ideas” Why it sometimes makes sense not to go to college right after high school The historic unity of the university, how it is “dis-integrating” and what can be done about it  Why “getting a job” is not the main reason to go to college Why Critical Theory is the opposite of all the university stands for Resources mentioned during our conversation: Mary Poplin, Is Reality Secular? So you can be “in the know.” Next, John wants to get to the mail—but he has to suffer the Peaches' sound effects first. (He was so proud of that Mouth Honk last week, and now, suddenly, it's a burden...) Our listener, Pkarlgh, writes to us from Canada using plenty of commas and making several observations about the sad state of our culture. She closes with a question about what to call “healthcare” when it's being controlled by tyrannical professionals who hold political grudges. We have some suggestions, of course. Later, John has a quote from G.K. Chesterton. But it takes awhile for him to read it because we enlist the help of the Podcast Ninja (Luke) to demonstrate a perfect British accent. John eventually shares the quote: “[Jesus] restrained something… I say it with reverence that there was, in this shattering personality, a thread that must be called shyness. There was something He hid from all men when he went up a mountain to pray. There was something that he covered constantly by abrupt silence or impetuous isolation. There was one thing that was too great for God to show us when He walked upon our earth. And I have sometimes fancied that it was his mirth.” We don't want to disagree with the famous Theologian. Q&A: When did you become a Christian? What led you to write this book? In your book, you picked out four characteristics of tough guys, which we're going to talk about today, you gave examples of those traits from men in the Bible, lesser known men from present day, as well as from Jesus, and you give tips on how men can apply this trait to their lives.  I like this format since it's similar to what we do on this podcast. I love that you used examples from the Old Testament since that the OT is often ignored today.  I also like that you took time in the beginning to give some historical context for when these men lived. So let's start with trait #1-Took risks-give us examples of some tough guys in the Bible who took risks How did Jesus take risks? You said that God often choose unlikely men to serve. I thought this was encouraging especially for those of us who aren't in traditional leadership/management roles at work.  Why do you think God operates this way? In business we often associate risk with reward.  Should we expect a reward for taking a risk in the name of the Kingdom of God? 2-Spoke the truth directly-I think it's pretty easy for us to think of how Jesus spoke the truth directly, can you give us examples of some other tough guys in the Bible who spoke the truth directly? You say that we need a perspective change when it comes to this of speaking truth directly, tell us about that (what will happen if I DON'T speak up vs if I DO speak up). When it comes to politics, you point out that Atheists and Secular Humanists have their own religion but are actually less ashamed of their religion than most politicians today.  You also point out that there are justice issues that the church often supports that are popular with the general public, but that in order to change the culture we need to talk about justice issues that are less popular that the Bible talks about.  Can you expand on that? What are some excuses Christians use for not speaking up? 3-Excelled at what they did This trait is near and dear to the heart of this podcast. Give us an example of someone in the Bible who excelled at what He did. Can men count on having worldly success as a result of working with excellence? You say that tough guys didn't just work hard they were shrewd.  When I heard that I thought of a phrase a contractor said to me recently named Brandon, that it's easy to work hard, but it's hard to work easy.  Can you give us some examples of what it looks like to be shrewd? When it comes to working with excellence you mentioned the importance of having goals. Why is it important for men to have goals when it comes to their spiritual life, not just things of this world? 4-Feared God more than men - you said this is the toughest trait for men, and you said that men are often courageous but hold back something from God.  Why is this trait so hard for men? I made a note of this scripture in your book, not sure if it was in your book or something I came across in the Bible after reading your book, but it's from Prov. 23:17 ESV "Let not your heart envy sinners but continue in the fear of the Lord all the day".  Do you see envy as being a trap for men when it comes this issue of fearing men? How can men contact you, get your book and learn more about you? Any final thoughts?

"Humanism is a rational philosophy informed by science, inspired by art, and motivated by compassion. Affirming the dignity of each human being, it supports the maximization of individual liberty and opportunity consonant with social and planetary responsibility. It advocates the extension of participatory democracy and the expansion of the open society, standing for human rights and social justice. Free of supernaturalism, it recognizes human beings as a part of nature and holds that values-be they religious, ethical, social, or political-have their source in human experience and culture. Humanism thus derives the goals of life from human need and interest rather than from theological or ideological abstractions, and asserts that humanity must take responsibility for its own destiny." – The Humanist Magazine "Historically, secular means an age or generation. Over time, it came to mean the world as opposed to the church. Today, we use secular to mean non-religious. To say Jesus was secular in the modern sense would be to ignore his ancient context. But it does make sense to ask what images Jesus used when he spoke of his vision. Did he use sacred images and sound religious or did he use worldly images and sound secular? It's not a joke. Jesus used worldly images and sounds secular." "I don't hate the flesh and blood Jesus who walked the dusty roads of Palestine, nor do I hate the Jesus found in the pages of the Bible. These Jesuses are relics of the past. I'll leave it to historians to argue and debate whether these Jesuses were real or fiction. Over the centuries, Christians have created many Jesuses in their own image. This is the essence of Christianity, an ever-evolving religion bearing little resemblance to what it was even a century ago." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/antonio-myers4/support

WHAT IF WE'VE BEEN WRONG?

Tricia Powell presents the strong case for why Christians need to understand the different worldviews so that they “have a seat at the table.” Listen to this spunky Puerto Rican mother, wife and Apologia worldview teacher explain the basic fundamentals of Marxism, and postmodernism contrasted to a biblical worldview. Learn how the Secular Humanists set out in the early 1900s to Christian values out of schools, media, government, etc. According to Tricia, it is time to stop with the holy huddles and get out into the world and join the conversation of worldview in every aspect of life. Tricia explains that Christians shouldn’t isolate themselves from this upside down world nor should they become tolerant. They should be equipped to boldly speak the truth with love. Tricia Powell, a bi-lingual native of Puerto Rico, graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Business Administration and is a graduate of the 2014-2015 Chuck Colson's Fellows Worldview Program. Before answering the call to motherhood, she managed large-scale projects and worked on programs for major corporations. Tricia discovered her love of teaching when she volunteered and mentored students in the youth group at her local church. Her desire to inspire continued when she worked for a foreign exchange program where she supervised 40+ students from around the world. She hosted seven students of her own during her four year tenure with this program. She proceeded to redirect her energy to her first ministry, her family, and began homeschooling her own children. She has taught History, Government and Classical Literature at her children's co-op. In addition, she is a frequent speaker serving on the Hosea Initiative team teaching worldview and its impact on social issues. She is currently teaching worldview to high school students. I spoke for the Humanist Association of Greater Philadelphia's speaker series for June 2017. Secular humanists -- subscribing to no religious worldview -- face questions of how they can find meaning in life, have an ethical foundation, cope with hardships, and come to terms with death. Religious individuals draw upon their various traditions for answers to many of life's big questions, but non-religious individuals may find themselves to be at a loss – especially in the eyes of the religious – to establish and explain a solid framework for living a coherent examined ethical life. Stoic Philosophy – popularized by Ancient Greek and Roman thinkers like Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius, and Seneca – offers practical wisdom with which Secular Humanists and people of all backgrounds can improve their lives by finding responses to many perennial challenges. For the Stoics, a main focus is pursuing virtue to attain a well-examined life through practical applications of Philosophy – acting with good character, using reason to form accurate careful judgments about the world, and having contentment through casting away anxiety and certain desires. Stoic writers urge people to take action applying what they learn to everyday life. Self-improvement including strengthening and improving one's mindset is central to Stoic thought. Even though many Stoic writers are centuries removed from us, their wisdom endures and is extremely relevant to our time. This speech – referencing Epictetus' 'Discourses,' Marcus Aurelius' 'Meditations,' and Seneca's 'Letters from a Stoic' -- will focus on central themes within Stoic Philosophy including having an ethical foundation for life, finding purpose, dealing with death, overcoming adversity, acceptance, distinguishing what's inside and outside our control, and working toward contentment. My Stoic Philosophy series explores the tradition of Stoicism with goals to inform, empower, and help others benefit from practical wisdom of Ancient Greek, Roman, and modern thinkers including Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius, and Seneca. For the Stoics, a main focus is pursuing virtue to attain a well-examined life through practical applications of Philosophy – acting with good character, using reason to form accurate careful judgments about the world, and achieving contentment. Our quote for today is from Simone Weil. He said, "Humanism was not wrong in thinking that truth, beauty, liberty, and equality are of infinite value, but in thinking that man can get them for himself without grace." In this podcast, we are making our way through Garry R. Morgan's book, "Understanding World Religions in 15 Minutes a Day." Our Understanding World Religions topic for today is, "Secular Humanism" Secular Humanism is not merely nontheistic. It is zealously antitheistic. Secular Humanists hold that belief in God is the greatest danger humanity faces, and human "salvation" requires total elimination of belief in the supernatural. So why include it in a book on world religions? Secular Humanism fits our working definition of religion as an organized system of beliefs that answers ultimate questions about life. It has councils and associations, conferences and workshops, and a statement of beliefs. As we've seen, many belief systems are not based on belief in or reliance on the supernatural. Theravada Buddhism, Jainism, and Confucianism, for instance, believe the answers come from within, not from any source beyond humanity. The inclusion of Secular Humanism is consistent, and besides, it would be strange to ignore a belief system that has the stated goal of eradicating the beliefs and practices described in every other chapter of this book. Secular Humanism's foundation is built on the philosophy of naturalism, or materialism: that the material universe (the natural world) is all that exists. This it shares with atheism, the belief that there is sufficient evidence to deny the existence of God and the supernatural. Agnostics, those who say there is insufficient evidence to know whether God (or the supernatural) exists, may also embrace Secular Humanism. But for Secular Humanists, atheism is just a beginning point. They have developed a complete worldview and value system built on naturalistic presuppositions. As an organized system it differs from secularism, a much broader term referring to the worldview of those who live as if God does not exist. This includes all the nonreligious, estimated by researcher David Barrett to exceed 20 percent of earth's population. Certainly, Secular Humanism influences secular beliefs, but it goes beyond passively ignoring God to actively building a lifestyle and worldview based on opposition to belief in God.

Our quote for today is from Mahatma Gandhi. He said, "When I admire the wonders of a sunset or the beauty of the moon, my soul expands in the worship of the creator." In this podcast, we will be making our way through Garry R. Morgan's book, "Understanding World Religions in 15 Minutes a Day: Learn the Basics of Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, Mormonism, Christianity, and many more." Garry Morgan is a Professor of Intercultural Studies at Northwestern College. He served with World Venture for 20 years in Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, and Tanzania.  Our topic for today is titled, "What is Religion?" Part 2:  Despite the variety of ways people define religion, sifting through definitions does steer us toward helpful principles. First, one religion component is an organized system of beliefs. In some cases the organization may not be obvious to outsiders, but no religion is made up of random, unrelated creeds. Second, not all religions involve worship, but they do all mandate or at least commend certain behaviors and actions — corporate, individual, or both — that are related to the belief system. Third, a religion answers questions about the unknown.  What William James called an "unseen order" relates to how a religion answers what are usually termed ultimate questions. The various religions respond to these queries in an astonishing array of ways. Whether or not the answers are interwoven in a systematic manner, they guide people in thinking about what is beyond that which our five senses can perceive.  The foremost ultimate question is "What is ultimate reality?" For theists (primarily, adherents to Christianity, Judaism, or Islam), the answer is God. Buddhists say the answer is Nothing (specifically, a void, or Nirvana). Secular Humanists say it's the material universe, beyond which nothing else exists.  The next question is "What is the nature of the universe?" Theists maintain that God created it. Secular Humanists believe the universe (or the material components that comprise it) is eternal and has no beginning or creator (First Cause). Hindus say the material universe is an illusion; we think it's real, but it doesn't actually exist — rather, all reality is spiritual in nature. Other questions asked are: "What does it mean to be human?" "What is humanity's primary problem?" "What happens after death?"  From one religion to another, the answers vary as much as their outward practices. Clearly, all religions are not basically the same. In summary, there is no single right answer to defining religion. For this podcast we'll use this working definition: "Religion is an organized system of beliefs that answers ultimate questions and commends certain actions or behaviors based on the answers to those questions."  NOW, FOR "AN EXTRA MINUTE", let's look at the question: Is Secular Humanism a religion?  Academic textbooks do not include it among the religions studied. Books that Christians write on world religions normally do include a chapter on secularism or atheism (though these are not exactly the same thing).  Why the difference?  Secular Humanists are vociferously opposed to being considered a religion, largely because most people assume religion involves belief in the supernatural. State universities won't buy textbooks over the objections of Secular Humanists.  However, like Confucianism, Taoism, Jainism, and other nontheistic belief systems included in academic textbooks, Secular Humanism fits our working definition, has significant impact on today's world, and serves functionally as a religion. For consistency, this podcast will includes an episode on it.

Host: Robert Price Ebenezer Scrooge once called Christmas "a false and commercial holiday." Is it? Should Humanists refuse to observe it? Should they wage war on it? Should they celebrate "Sanka" versions of it like Solstice and "HumanLight"? Christians complain that the holiday has become secularized—so should Secular Humanists just say "Thanks!" and enjoy listening to "Let It Snow" and "Winter Wonderland"? As always, Tom Flynn brings new and well-informed perspectives to a difficult issue! Tom Flynn is the Executive Director of the Council for Secular Humanism and the editor of Free Inquiry magazine. He is the author of the science-fiction novels Galactic Rapture and Nothing Sacred, which involve the lore of Mormonism, on which Tom is an authority. He is also a historian of the Freethought movement and a frequent speaker in humanist circles. You would be well advised to mortgage your home and purchase a copy of The New Encyclopedia of Unbelief, which Tom edited. Perhaps his most notorious book, though, is The Trouble with Christmas, which has a lot to do with this episode.

He talks about the part Mormonism played in his transition to non-belief. Perhaps one of the most consistent secularists around today, Tom elaborates on the problems he has with rites of passage ceremonies and marriage. He talks about what he sees as problems with some secular charity programs and the parts of life he believes should be off-limits to a secular community. Finally, he and Price discuss radical Islam and how we should approach talking about it.
