Discover simple ways to strengthen communication in your closest relationships. In this episode, Matt O'Neill sits down with veteran marriage counselor Chip Judd to discuss the keys to building a strong, lasting relationship through effective communication.  Chip shares insights from over 40 years of counseling couples on managing expectations, understanding different love languages, and taking responsibility for your own happiness within the relationship.  Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation:  The hula hoop analogy Taking responsibility for your responses The power of embracing each other's differences Anticipating your spouse's needs [04:44] The Hula Hoop Analogy Chip says that a hula hoop identifies where one person ends and another begins. Chip emphasizes that everything inside your hoop is your responsibility, and that we cannot make others feel or be responsible for things within their own hoop - only they and God can work on meeting their own needs and emotions. This analogy helps illustrate healthy boundaries and expectations in relationships. [12:04] Mastering Your Response-Ability Chip breaks down the word responsibility itself, noting that it contains the idea of "response-ability" - our ability to choose our response. Chip emphasizes that one of the most important responsibilities we have is mastering our ability to choose how we respond, even when faced with challenges from life or our partner. If we give up taking responsibility for our reactions and blame others, then the relationship will struggle from that point onward. [18:09] How Adjusting Expectations Strengthens Your Close Bonds Frustration in relationships stems from the gap between our expectations and experience. He explains that there are two ways to close this gap and lower frustration - by changing the experience, or by lowering expectations. Lowering expectations is the one thing we have control over, since we can't force others to behave how we want. Boundaries help with this by reminding us that no person can truly meet our deepest needs - only God can be the source. [22:19] The Power of Embracing Each Other's Differences Chip believes our differences in marriage push us to deeply understand our partners. He says God made us varied so relationships require learning each other - like anticipating needs beyond our own. Embracing diversity helps marriages thrive by growing closer through care of one another's unique qualities. [Part 1 of this two-parter: God, People, Prayer, Mystery: People Need to Pray More]Most Christians believe God is all-loving and all-powerful, but if this is the case, why does evil exist and how does prayer fit into the equation? Part two continues the conversation with author and theologian, Thomas J. Oord, explaining a specific belief in God termed "Open Theism."  Open Theists suppose that not only is God limited in power, but for God to make people with true freewill, the future isn't knowable even to Him.  While most Christians lend no credence to this theological framework, it's yet another way in which  many Christians have attempted to reconcile human suffering with the existence of "an all-loving God."    These questions have been baffling the deepest of thinkers for thousands of years.  It's Jack Hoey, Joey Svendsen and Chip Judd with Thomas J. Pastors Chip Judd and Greg Surratt unpack some history of their friendship, what strengths they see in one another and together discuss some of their weaknesses.  It's quite a humorous and beautiful story how God grafted Chip Judd (and wife Coleen) into the body of Seacoast family.  Pastor Greg shares a foundational conviction  he's always had for Seacoast that according to him, has allowed for so many people with different denominational backgrounds to fit right in and call Seacoast their church family.  Chip Judd gives his take on why the vision at Seacoast and the type of leadership Greg exudes isn't normal for pastors who lead such large churches.  Both explain why despite their many more years of life and ministry experience than that of Seacoast's much younger lead pastor, they unequivocally consider Pastor Josh Surratt to be their pastor. Seacoast Church is a big tent that houses many Christians believing very differently on certain topics; and this is one of them.  The founding pastor, Greg Surratt, believes in the gift of tongues, practices it behind closed doors, and while many others on staff do as well, many do not.  Some do not believe it's actually a gift that is in effect during this current age of the church.   In today's conversation with Chip Judd, Jack Hoey III, and Joey Svendsen, a few viewpoints are discussed but mainly the gift itself is dissected.  If it's a real spiritual gift, what even is it?  Is it God's intention for everyone to have?  Are there times when people speak in tongues audibly but it's just noises without the Holy Spirit's involvement?  The three discuss these and other aspects of what many refer to as a heavenly language.   Stay ConnectedWebsite | Facebook Discussion Page  In this episodeJack Hoey III / InstagramChip Judd / Instagram Joey Svendsen / Instagram Lynne Stroy, host / Instagram Executive Producer: Josh SurrattProducer/Editor: Joey SvendsenSound Engineer/Editor: JT PriceSound Engineer: Katelyn VandiverMusic, including theme song: Joel T. In 2019, Seacoast Lead Pastor Josh Surratt called for a "Healing Service," originally motivated by desperate hope to see his sister, Jenny, healed from breast cancer.  God orchestrated something much bigger than expected. Through a mutual friend, Josh Surratt was connected to Josh Silverberg who had recently seen miraculous healings as a result of his fervent prayer and belief in Jesus' power.   While Josh Surratt was expecting a couple of hundred people to show up and realized there was well over 1000 plus, the nerves settled in deep.  Especially after finding out over dinner that Josh Silverberg had zero experience leading a healing service.  What happened is truly more than anyone could ask or imagine.Pastors Julie Hiott, Chip Judd, Jack Hoey III and Joey Svendsen discuss theology surrounding miracles and healing.  Are some prayers more effective than others?  Do some people "pray better?" Are there ways to increase the chances of receiving a miracle?  Does it make a difference if a hundred people are praying for something, rather than just a handful?  Can the question be answered, "Why does God heal sometimes and other times, doesn't?"At the end of the episode, we included some theological "takes" from Josh Silverberg.  He shared these thoughts on episode one of this series, but we waited to include them on this episode, given theology is what this one is mainly about.  Stay ConnectedWebsite | Facebook Discussion Page  On This EpisodeJulie Hiott / Instagram Jack Hoey III / Instagram Chip Judd / InstagramJoshua Sliverberg / InstagramJoey Svendsen, co-host / InstagramMayer, Jenny, co-host / Instagram Popadich, Stephen, co-host / InstagramExecutive Producer: Josh SurrattProducer/Editor: Joey SvendsenSound Engineer/Editor: JT PriceSound Engineer: Gabe DewalkMusic, theme song: Joel T. The existence of spiritual warfare is an accepted reality for most Christians.  "We battle not against flesh and blood," Paul says to the church in Ephesus.  Is it safe to say that many Christians don't take this warfare serious enough?  Equally, many  Christians appear to be a bit too focussed on the "evil team," while not lending enough credence to other "foes" we have our hands full with (i.e. our personal health, our wrongdoings that harmfully affect us, and sins against us by others, just to name a few).  Julie Hiott, Jack Hoey III, Joey Svendsen and Chip Judd share candidly their thoughts on this matter, many of which is speculation because we simply can not know everything about this realm.  As a Christian, is it okay to “opt out” of the warfare and leave this fight to God and angels?  Are certain people in the church called to be more cognizant of the spiritual realm while others are not?   Are inanimate objects effective in battling evil spirits?  Jude 1:6 seems to point to some demons being in prison. Why doesn't God just lock them all up?    We ponder these and many more questions about these principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this world, and spiritual wickedness in high places.Stay Connected.Website | Facebook Discussion Page  In this episodeJoey Svendsen, co-host / InstagramJulie Hiott / InstagramJack Hoey III / TwitterChip Judd, co-host / Instagram / WebsiteExecutive Producer: Josh SurrattProducer/Editor: Joey SvendsenSound Engineer/Editor: JT PriceSound Engineer: Diego GomezMusic Composed by:Joel T. Co-hosts Chip Judd (very long-time Christian) and Matt Oxley (long-time Christian, gone atheist) discuss with Joey what he finds to be an "impossible position" Christians are in when it comes to their kids and the doctrine of hell.  If dreaded eternal separation is on the table of possibilities, fear and life-trauma [in the end] is a good thing, especially if one is scared enough to repent and avoid going there.  Right? Chip and Matt both agree that religious people have taken advantage of this doctrine to control people. They also agree that a fixation on eternal separation makes for lousy Christians.  Joey makes a case again for Christian Universalism and Matt proposes that Jesus failed, if everyone isn't saved.  Why are so many Christians not able to find peace while holding a belief in hell, while others can go about their life normally, not bothered by their many friends and family perishing in the end?  Do Christians really believe in hell?  What is humanity's flaw, and what is the gospel anyway?  A hell of an episode (pun intended). The Seacoast Podcast: Things You Won't Hear On Sunday

Many pastors operate from a philosophy along these lines: "the people I lead cannot know of my mistakes. Because they are modeling after my example, they have to see me living right, so they will do the same."  And the results?  Time and time again, those people are shocked when it's discovered that their pastor, behind the scenes, has been on a path towards destruction. On the other hand, many church folks still seem to enjoy having "their guy" they can look up to and be proud of, blissfully assuming their pastor to be walking the "straight and narrow."  In turn, many pastors make the mistake of trying to live up to that assumption, and in order to do this long-term, it often requires secrets in the dark.  Eventually that darkness is too much for any one to bear.On this episode, Pastors Greg Surratt, Sharon Miller and Chip Judd discuss with Joey Svendsen, issues in the church that generally lead to these downfalls. At the top of the episode, two pastors at Seacoast practice the transparency that is preached here, by sharing to the world personal short-comings, both of them still works of progress in their prospective challenges.Stay Connected.Website | Facebook Discussion PageIn this episodePastor Sharon Miller / Website / Instagram / BooksPastors who share at the beginning:Teddy Winter / Instagram  Chris Russo / Instagram  Roy Jacques, host / Facebook Joey Svendsen, host / InstagramChip Judd / Instagram / WebsiteGreg Surratt / Instagram / Podcast Executive Producer: Josh SurrattProducer/Editor: Joey SvendsenSound Engineer/Editor: JT PriceSound Engineer: Diego GomezMusic Composed by Joel T. What if in the "Genesis 1 beginning," things had already began?  What if the infamous, "In the Beginning" beginning, happens to be about  one small area, guarded by an angel (Garden of Eden).  S. Joshua Swamidass, MD, PhD,  author of The Genealogical Adam and Eve: The Surprising Science of Universal Ancestry, challenges widely-held presuppositions held about the Genesis creation story and has put his tenure on the line for being forthright with the role that his faith plays in how he sees the world.  In this episode he talks how a plain reading of Genesis  can still be supported by science.  Oh yeah, and he believes in evolution.  But according to Dr. Swamidass, humans still lack amazement for the good stuff.  How are we not more fascinated by existence in general?  Or the existence of consciousness?  He demonstrates well the ability to maintain what most of his atheist colleagues would call "good science" while still being a self-proclaimed, "Christian first, scientist second" person.  And while he's here, we also manage to talk conspiracies, AI, Mars exploration and how it's hard to get ethics out of science, especially in regards to abortion.  At top of episode, Jack Hoey and Ellen Mauro defend some very cynical comments they made on a previous episode about speaking in tongues.  Chip Judd challenges their views on a means of prayer he practices every day and claims to be why he is the man he is today.  Joshua Swamidass, MD, PhD // Twitter  Ellen Mauro Instagram Chip Judd Instagram // WebsiteJack Hoey Instagram //  TwitterJoey/PWNA Instagram and TwitterJoin us as a Patron!Join our mailing list to keep up with everything.Tip any amount $ to Venmo for a PWNA Sticker.Join the PWNA Discussion Facebook GroupPWNAcontact@gmail.com  for correspondence.Theme song, courtesy of Derek MinorOther music originally composed by  Joel Hamilton and Joel Hamilton + friends. Executive Producer of PWNApod:  Jared SvendsenSupport the show

Author and Theologian, Sharon Putt (formerly Sharon Baker), Chip Judd and host, Joey Svendsen all have similar spiritual upbringings but Sharon and Joey believe in a Christ-centered universal salvation.  It's one thing to reject this belief, another thing for a Christian to say the bible doesn't support it.  One's view of scripture  may "clearly say anything" he think it says, but what is his view about the (seemingly clear) passages that discus humanity and all of earth being redeemed.  We discuss God and love, in context of the afterlife; and whether there had to be an adversary  for us to be able to truly love and chose God.  Joey pushes back on the very common and sensible objection of  “you're defining God and love by your own standards.”  Both Sharon and Chip are very biblically studied and Chip has never considered Jesus saving everyone.   Sharon Putt (formerly Baker) / Info / Razing Hell bookChip Judd / Website / InstagramJoin us as a Patron!Join our mailing list to keep up with everything.Tip any amount $ to Venmo for a PWNA Sticker.Joey/PWNA Instagram and TwitterCurrent DonorSee giving opportunityJoin the PWNA Discussion Facebook GroupPWNAcontact@gmail.com  for correspondence.Theme song, courtesy of Derek MinorOther music originally composed by Joel Hamilton.Executive Producer of PWNApod:  Jared Svendsen Subscribe here to keep up with all things "Pastor With No Answers" as well as a new digital family we'd love to have you a part of.  You don't have to be alone in your spiritual questions  and you don't have to play by society's "new standard" of taking sides and being polarized.  Join us!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/pwnapod)R2o1KCj57KYk1OBSNsmZ      Support the show

While I (Joey) personally find very primitive and archaic the belief in a God-ordained predestination of souls, Chris Date's holding to this position  doesn't lessen the amount of respect I have for him as a biblical scholar.  Chip, Chris and I discuss and debate the philosophical components of whether people can have real choice while at the same time, God also ordaining that choice they will freely make.  In other words, can God ordain that people have real choice while also ordaining what choice they will make?  Chris thinks so.  We have plenty of “if I treated my kids the way God does” analogies, talk a bit about whether Jack and Jill had real choice to go up the hill if the author writes it (you'll have to listen) and even ponder marital affairs being “God ordained.”  Chris Date and Rethinking Hellhttp://www.theopologetics.com/http://www.youtube.com/theopologetics/https://fuller.academia.edu/ChristopherDatehttp://www.rethinkinghell.com/http://www.youtube.com/rethinkinghell/Chip Judd's "8-Minute Mind Shift"https://chipjudd.com/category/mindshiftJoey/PWNA Instagram:  www.instagram.com/joeysvendsenCurrent DonorSee: https://donorsee.com/pwnahelpsGet notifications each time we start raising money to get more information on our current opportunity to “save the day” for team humanity. The beginning of Joey's crash was preceded by an onslaught of extreme anxiety at a whole new level he'd never experienced. Pricilla was in New York City when it happened while Joey was at home solo parenting. Our friend Chip Judd (pastor and therapist), one of the few who walked this path with us up close and personal, shares his expertise of physiological depression, reflects on what he saw and experienced with Joey and Pricilla during this dark season, and touches on the need for the mental health field to humanize people. Chip sees this depressive episode as something out of Joey's control (with one exception), Pricilla describes the lack of dignity given to the mentally ill and Joey reflects on his lifestyle and whether that was the culprit of his downward spiral. Series Description: This time a little over a year ago, our world was turned upside down by Joey’s mental health crash. We want to tell our story of suffering as well as the beauty amidst the suffering. From Joey’s week-stay at the hospital to our kids learning first-hand about mental illness, to natural worries of how long this all would last, we had a family that surrounded us, hope that filled my heart, a new closeness and a new beginning – Pricilla Instagram account: www.instagram.com/PWNApod: Current DonorSee: https://donorsee.com/pwnahelps: Join us as a patron! https://www.patreon.com/pwnapod: Join the discussion: https://www.facebook.com/groups/PWNAtalk https://twitter.com/pwnapod https://twitter.com/joeysvendsen https://www.facebook.com/PWNApod CALL 507-403-PWNA (7962): Questions, Comments, Feedback, Pushback, frustration? Chip Judd and Jack Hoey, regulars on this podcast, have both been Christians for a long time and see prayer in very different lights. How much responsibility do we have to pray regularly and does God withhold blessings and provisions when we do not pray enough? Does God often communicate back to us? So many questions about prayer and we discuss many of them on this episode. At the top of the episode, Joey, Ellen Mauro and John Mark McMillan continue their conversation about porn and today specifically we discuss how significant the difference is between seeing naked bodies and watching sexual acts. I also surveyed our listeners on their personal struggles with mental illness and share the results in the intro. Song you heard: The Lost Chorus is a collaboration between Alex Albert (Project 86, drums), Ryan Dennee (Stavesacre, guitar), Dirk Lemmenes (Stavesacre, bass) and Andy Zipf (vocals, guitar). In 2009, Alberts, Dennee and Lemmenes wrote several instrumental songs in a rehearsal space outside of Los Angeles. They reached out to Zipf, who added melodies, lyrics and some additional guitar parts. This resulted in a self produced and self titled EP released in 2011. In 2019, new material began to take shape, and a series of singles produced and mixed by Paul Fig (Deftones, Ghost, Alice in Chains) are now in process. The first song from this series, “Soft Lies” was released June 26, 2020. Find the Lost Chorus where ever you listen to your tunes.

Two guests who are regulars and part of the PWNA family, Jack Hoey (father) and Chip Judd iron out their contrasting views on how we interact with God and what we can and can’t be sure of, including whether God even exists in the first place. Joey explains how his peace with and closeness to God feels way more palpable and vibrant when he stays in a space of “I believe with all my heart, but I really also can’t know.” (This conversation begins at 10:30 mark) Episode beings with an uncomfortable interview that Joey conducts with one who struggles with mental illness. It sounds like Joey but given his ultra-evangelical/fundamentalist slant and minimizing of mental illness during the whole interview, it’s hard to make sense of this one (wink, wink).
