Locked On White Sox - Daily Podcast On The Chicago White Sox
The Chicago White Sox avoided arbitration with Lucas Giolito and four other pitchers. 2022 Cy Young runner up, Dylan Cease as well as Michael Kopech, Reynaldo Lopez and Jose Ruiz also avoided the arbitration process by coming to an agreement on contracts with the Sox. Last year at this time, the White Sox and Giolito could not initially come to terms. Giolito described the process last year as frustrating and disheartening. This is Giolito's walk year and the drama has been avoided for now. The international signing period began recently and the White Sox were active once again. Reports indicate that the Sox agreed to terms with pitcher Luis Reyes. He is ranked 41 on MLB list of Top 50 international prospects. The Sox also signed shortstop Juan Uribe, Jr. He is the son of 2005 White Sox legend, Juan Uribe. Also, the North Siders enjoyed their fan convention this past weekend... what happened to Sox Fest? White Sox fans were shut out for the third year in a row and the reasons are really no mystery.Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors!Built BarBuilt Bar is a protein bar that tastes like a candy bar. Editor's note: We're going to regularly schedule We Can Pod It Out episodes at noon Eastern, so you can look forward to that. After some consideration of making a breakout section, that felt overly complicated, at least for now. Sometimes, there will be a newsletter attached. Sometimes, like today, not! Other days, like when Willets Pod and Not A Football Podcast return from break, newsletters are more likely to appear with those. Think of it not so much as “that guy doesn't know what he's doing” (however true that is) and more “hooray, Willets Pen emails are a delightful surprise each time, although they generally say what they are in the subject line, so, uh…” And if you're just reading this on the web, or on a podcast feed… subscribe to the newsletter! What we do have today is a little Mets trivia, thanks to this morning's addition of José Quintana to go along with Justin Verlander, Max Scherzer, and Carlos Carrasco in the now Jacob deGrom-less rotation. Good to get a lefty on board. (Also, I had a whole rant teed up if the Yankees managed to blow it with Aaron Judge, but they didn't… so there will be a more reasonable analysis in a future newsletter.)Anyway, Quintana will be the second Q-surnamed player in Mets history, joining Omar Quintanilla. So for today's trivia: which letter is the only one that has never started a Mets player's last name, which letter is Q now one away from “tying,” and who are the three players with that letter to start their surname? Answer below this tweet about our hat drive and today's WCPIO cover art…Trivia answer: While Xavier Nady is remembered as the X-Man in Queens, obviously his first name, not his last, starts with X — the letter no Mets player has ever had to start their last name. The only X player to reach a major league level was Leovigildo Xiqués, an outfielder for the Cleveland-Indianapolis Clowns in 1947, which obviously is 15 years before the Mets came around. Thanks to The Ultimate Mets Database, the tricky trivia answer is the letter U, and the players Del Unser, Lino Urdaneta, and of course, Juan Uribe. This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit willetspen.substack.com/subscribe
In the second hour, Dan Bernstein and Laurence Holmes listened live to the introductory press conference for new White Sox manager Pedro Grifol, who along with general manager Rick Hahn answered questions from members of the Chicago media. Later, Bernstein and Holmes shared their takeaways from the news conference.
Sure, Brett Ballantini can't seem to remember what year it is, but still and all, the South Side Sox mothership podcast is back for another year, after a month or so away. And it's a Meet the Players podcast, starring our five-tool player, Adrian Serrano! Get to know him a bit through his Meet the Players article up on site today, and listen to our podcast together: Re-live the 2005 run, and the majesty of the Scott Podsednik walk-off One of these things is not like the other: Robin Ventura, Eloy Jiménez, Juan Uribe, Ron Karkovice A surprising pick for next White Sox statue (hint: It will be a loud statue) What folks don't get about The Natural, the best baseball movie choice by both on this podcast Trying to put a positive spin on the pre-lockout White Sox offseason Will the labor dispute take game away from the season? Oh, and hey, back to a non-baseball note: Check out Adrian's band, The Burst and Bloom. They're really good. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Check us out on LetsGoTribe.com! I don't know about you guys, but I am unironically pumped that the Cleveland Indians signed Juan Uribe. Naturally, I made sure to bring it up on the podcast, and at the very least, we can all agree he is going to fun to write about. There were some other non-Uribe things to discuss of course, such as the fact that goofy Spring Training games are just a week away. Jason and I also review the Top 10 Indians prospects as voted on by the Let's Go Tribe community, including why Mike Trout and Bryce Harper have ruined everything when it comes to evaluating prospects. We did not go in-depth with numbers 11 through 20 in the podcast, but you can find more on them here. Also, we asked around for questions to answer and got some pretty interesting ones. Baseball is officially back! Spring training is now in full swing, though we still have another week or so to wait until games begin. This is bad news for our poor beat writers, who are doing their best to churn out content, but good news for The Voice of the Turtle. That is, if you don't mind off-topic discussions about certain risqué Google searches. In this week's show, we take a look at the early storylines of the spring, including Francisco Rodriguez's visa issues and Steven Moya's productive winter. They also sympathize with the beat writers (minus the weather), and break down the Detroit Tigers' latest signings. Listener questions take an odd turn this week, and the lightning round returns!
