To commemorate the 600th Sox Populi Podcast, we had podcasting mainstays Chrystal O'Keefe (Visiting Dugout, Soxy Chicks, Estrogen Power Hour, et. al), Joe Resis (Sox Pop on the Farm) and Melissa Sage-Bollenbach (Ladies' Night) on to discuss the past four-five years of podcasting at Sox Populi and South Side Sox. Brief acknowledgement was made for Sharing Sox (the subject of podcast 601) and Tommy Barbee, our Father Soxivus and co-host of Killer B's, but then we dug into some talk with each host/guest about their respective programs. We bridged our break discussing the connection between our two most revolutionary podcasts, Estrogen Power Hour and Ladies' Night. And in the end, we wound up talking about the "mothership podcast," the catch-all program you're listening to right now. Throughout, host Brett Ballantini got his teeth kicked in, playfully (maybe). A special and enigmatic voice kicks off the podcast! The strange accounting that actually lands this podcast as somewhere around 608 or 610 Brett's habit of bullying (? gulp) some hosts into doing even more for Sox Populi The original name of the pirate radio broadcast, Estrogen Power Hour The most satisfying mothership podcast ever In a longer podcast post than usual, we'll roll the credits for all our podcasts: Mothership Podcast (Brett Ballantini, host) 190 programs beginning Jan. 28, 2020 Sharing Sox (Will and Leigh Allan) 143 programs beginning Sept. 9, 2020 Visiting Dugout (Chrystal O'Keefe, host) 82 programs beginning March 20, 2023 Sox Pop on the Farm (Brett Ballantini, host) 60 programs beginning May 4, 2021 North Side Sox (Sam Sherman and Janice Valenzuela), 23 programs beginning October 2020 Sox Pop Postgame Podcast (Brett Ballantini, host) 20 programs beginning April 13, 2021 Ladies' Night (Melissa Sage-Bollenbach, host) 13 programs beginning March 20, 2024 Killer B's (Tommy Barbee and Keelin Billue) 12 programs beginning Oct. 30, 2020 Sox Pop Pregame Podcast (Brett Ballantini, host) 10 programs beginning Oct. 7, 2021 Dugout Metrics (Brett Ballantini, Luke Smailes, Trevor Lines) 10 programs beginning Dec. 10, 2020 The Big Blurt (Rob Colletti and Bill Meincke) eight programs beginning Jan. 29, 2021 Soxy Chicks (Chrystal O'Keefe and Bayleigh Von Schneider) seven programs beginning March 30, 2024 DISH Deluxe (Brett Ballantini, host) six programs beginning July 17, 2023 Estrogen Power Hour (Keelin Billue, Janice Valenzuela, Colleen Sullivan, Chrystal O'Keefe) five programs beginning May 16, 2021 Live! three programs Time Out! (Di Billick, host) two programs beginning Aug. 1, 2024 Planet White Sox (Brett Ballantini and Trooper Galactus) two programs beginning Sept. 15, 2022 Group Therapy (Sam Sherman, host) two programs beginning April 26, 2022 Explain it to Me Like I'm 5 (Keelin Billue, host) two programs beginning March 8, 2022 Second Hand Embarrassment (Jacki Krestel, host) one program on Jan. 12, 2024 (Don't add them up, the math is a little fuzzy.) We can't avoid the reality of the 2025 season any longer, thus Melissa Sage-Bollenbach, Hannah Filippo and Brett Ballantini sat down to discuss our predictions for the 2025 season, in the framework of the annual South Side Sox prognostication challenge. We focused significantly on the White Sox, but took a broader look at baseball as well: Season wins ran the gamut of sunny (Hannah, 55) to dour (Brett, 42), with Melissa (48) sidling almost exactly in-between Given no clear standout stars for the Sox (and the one we have, Luis Robert Jr., may not be in Chicago all season), our picks for best and worst White Sox in 2025 are packed with variety. In some cases, a single player is forecast as both best AND worst on the team this year Drilling down into the AL Central, which appears to be a three-team fight, at the very least. Will pitching rule the day — and which pitching will take a step forward in 2025? Storylines around the league jumping out at us include the improvements in Boston (Hannah) and the Shohei Ohtani Watch (Melissa) Will the White Sox have a winning March? Kristina took that in from the media space, while Melissa and family was there in full fan mode — including an appearance on stage with son Sage! How the intimacy of the event (or, cynically, the "selective audience" the White Sox attract nowadays) made everything more satisfying Could the White Sox have hoped for SoxFest 2025 to go any better? We have a comprehensive rundown of the twists and turns of our 2024 predictions over at SSS, but here are some highlights of the podcast that Melissa Sage-Bollenbach, Joe Resis and I did addressing them (and, I suppose, the moribund White Sox postseason and future): If not for the Dodgers, a lot of us would have been in trouble This trio all did well all told, with Joe finishing fourth of 18, Brett fifth, Melissa seventh Each of us review our favorite and oddball picks A look back at how remarkably non-dour the majority of our writers were about the White Sox season, silly people Our second half addresses some of the offseason, including the new manager, dead market, and hopes (?) for the season To end on a good note, we look ahead to the 20th anniversary of 2005 and our favorite non-obvious moments of that year Have a look at the podcast at our the Sox Populi YouTube channel (and don't be a flake — subscribe!) and/or listen on Megaphone below. On the occasion of the holiday, and perhaps before everything is buried in football and turkey and drunken political arguments, Sox Pop 164 assembled with Joe Resis, Brian O'Neill, Melissa Sage-Bollenbach and Brett Ballantini to give thanks for our White Sox fandom. No, really. First and foremost, we all thank you, our wonderful readers and community here at South Side Sox. It's said ad nauseam, but without you and your passion, there is no site. Thank you dearly for sticking it out with us, when it would be much easier not to And without all of us and our passion, collectively as fans, there is no White Sox (something, perhaps, to keep in mind this holiday season, White Sox) Brian is thankful that he still cares about the team, even when the emotions are usually anger, repulsion, disgust, shock or disappointment. There's something about baseball, and the White Sox, that stirs him as no other sport does Melissa is taking advantage of the, um, pause in actual MLB competitiveness to learn and care more about the prospects in the system. Ah, youth, not spoiled by what has become the reality of 21st Century Soxdom Joe still sees the joy in the players, from the unlikely heights of Seby Zavala to the continued dominance and flair of Luis Robert Jr. Brett is happy, for the first time in his life, not to be a White Sox employee Bonus viewing note: See how visibly uncomfortable compliments make Brian. Friends, we've made it. This cursed season of White Sox baseball has come to an end. A lot of people wisely checked out early into the season; others, let's call them the masochists, stayed through the bitter end. When I look back on this season and all the games I needed to watch to keep my gig here at South Side Sox, I think about the end of one of my favorite movies. I am in fact Winona Ryder at the end of Heathers.  On the final episode of the 2023 season, I hosted Javier Reyes of Locked on Padres. Like the White Sox, the Padres are also a huge disappointment, without hope in their respective divisions.  We both concluded that baseball is pain and despite all the frustration that comes with it, we keep coming back for more.  “It's the hope that kills you.” - Ted Lasso What happened in San Diego this season? South Side Sox duty geezer Leigh Allan and his son and west coast correspondent, Will, manage to take a moment off from this week's White Sox weirdness to agree wholeheartedly with an article in The Athletic bemoaning the fact official scorers are terrified of ruling errors any more, to the point any routine booting of a grounder or drop of a fly is deemed a hit, and only throws into at least row Q will be scored with a big E.  That example of players not being held responsible for their actions then just naturally led to the White Sox Week That Was, full of a bizarre boxarama (spoiler alert: We politely suggest some mental health help for a certain member of the Sox who has appeared very troubled this year) followed by accusations of a deceased culture in the Sox clubhouse, reinforcement of that accusation, denial of that accusation, and then a whole bunch more accusations of lax effort or attitude on the part of certain players. Whew! And if that wasn't enough, there was Rick Hahn, holder of law and business degrees giving the business in a way no lawyer would ever advise to all the players who were traded at the deadline by saying they got rid of the problem people.  Who did he mean? The pitiful Chicago media forgot to ask, so all six of those traded except Keynan Middleton, who got a separate blast from the pitiful GM, are open for speculation. None seem likely culprits, but maybe there was a six-player conspiracy. Got a favorite? Feel free to take a guess in the comments.  Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

South Side Sox duty geezer Leigh Allan and his son and west coast correspondent, Will, took time out from warming up in case the White Sox need them to fill out the bullpen to talk about the heavy activity and non-activity on trade deadline day. The final Sox tally, pending judicial review, was six pitchers gone, along with Jake Burger, who is headed to Miami. Incoming are a whole bunch of prospects of various minor league levels, almost all pitchers, but including two well-regarded catchers (thank goodness).  The pitchers weren't a surprise, but Burger was, because he's second on the team in home runs with 25, though admittedly seldom gets on base unless he's hit the ball at least 500 feet. Burger's departure is some more cleaning out of the crowd of Sox DHs, so there are only about 10 left. Also left are Tim Anderson and Yasmani Grandal, for some reason. That made the Sox by far the most active AAAL Central team, as the Twins apparently didn't pay their phone bills or forgot what time of the season it was, and the Guardians inexplicably traded away their only healthy veteran pitcher, Aaron Civale, as well as Josh Bell.  Speaking of the inexplicable, the most bizarre twist of the day was Eduardo Rodriguez refusing to waive his no-trade clause so the Tigers could trade him to the Dodgers. We figure it must be because he doesn't want to have to play baseball in October. But now all that is done, so Will and Leigh naturally have lots of advice for how to organize lineups the rest of the season. Hint: Let the kids play, OK? Learn more about your ad choices. Little did we know when we began our latest “livestream” (to @SouthSideSox on Twitter, Sox Populi on YouTube and South Side Sox on Facebook) that we'd be mourning more than just another lost White Sox season. Midway through, Dante Jones broke the news to Brett Ballantini, Sam Sherman, Chrystal O'Keefe, Malachi Hayes, Kristina Airdo and Ryiin that Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo López had been traded to the Angels. That changed the temperature of the room, quite a bit. With the loss, the White Sox dipped back to worse than .400 as a team, and again cracked the 10 worst winning percentages in club history Sam found the Crosstown losses so bad, so embarrassing, it shook him back out of indifference and into rage, particularly at an executive class that seems to hold fans in disdain To that point, you can flip fans the bird with a rebuild, or by throwing a tantrum at Reggie's, or hiring Tony La Russa, because the team is planning or in ascendance; today's bird-flipping (we're still rooting for the rebuild to fail, Rick?) doesn't fly, because we know the outcome of the rebuild — and it wasn't success Similarly, per Sam, being inscrutable with every move (management, personnel, spending, the daggone injured list, for crying out loud) works if you WIN; when you lose, you're coming across as at best obstinate, at worst, aggressively dumb Debate over whether this White Sox team is predestined to be worse in 2024 — Malachi, for one, doesn't think that's a foregone conclusion Tears will be shed over the loss of Lucas, even though we all knew it was coming sometime this year, during or after the season; hang in there, Chrystal and Kristina! Surprisingly, the return for two rental pitchers, catcher Edgar Quero and lefty arm Ky Bush — is FAR richer than any of us was expecting Imagining what the final, painful, two months of the season will be like Learn more about your ad choices. Our latest “livestream” (to @SouthSideSox on Twitter, Sox Populi on YouTube and South Side Sox on Facebook and, natch, here on the “home page”) featured a review of the 2023 draft and look ahead to the second half of the regular season. Adrian Serrano and Dante Jones joined Brett Ballantini to talk about the best and worst picks and trends of the draft, and what in the world the White Sox are going to do while wheezing through the last 70 games of the regular season. The familiar theme of not having nearly enough starting arms to attack a 162-game regular season — and how that, sadly, was not addressed in an otherwise inspiring draft Melissa Sage-Bollenbach checks in and demands some cussing on the program, after she had to witness Friday night's debacle in Atlanta in person The front office finally finished reading Moneyball! And the shocking change in tone, with picks who can get on base and don't whiff Excitement over local prep George Wolkow — and whether his closest draft-steal comp, Jared Kelley, provides hope or horror in the seasons to come Addressing the Chris Sale-Yoán Moncada-Michael Kopech trade, which breaks back full circle into a philosophical look at how to approach a rotation in the 21st Century Cameos from B.B. the Cat! For the first round of the 2023 MLB draft, we opted for another “livestream” (to @SouthSideSox on Twitter, Sox Populi on YouTube and South Side Sox on Facebook and, natch, here on the “home page”). Malachi Hayes and Tommy Barbee joined Brett Ballantini to talk about the early draft overall, and speculate on the White Sox pick. Watch, in real time, as our hopes our crushed and the bounty of a rich draft is left on the table, again: Early thoughts on the speculation that Pittsburgh would veer away from one of the two (more expensive) LSU options, which turned out not to be true Watch as the trio's hope builds, with off-the-board picks coming from several teams you'd think would know better in a rich, rich draft ... ... and then falls, as the safe, pedestrian, duplicate pick of Jacob González is announced. Even the spin heard on MLB Network — which spins every pick into sunshine, pretty deep into the draft — rings a bit hollow Discussions of launch angle and organizational draft philosophy Speculation over how Rick Hahn picked the lock on the door to break out of wherever Ken Williams stashed him — and how he managed to sully this pick, halfway out the door to a new job Learn more about your ad choices. What was the biggest misstep of the rebuild? There was free agency lamentations, but not exclusively the one you might expect When did the White Sox make us happiest? The answers center on 2005, but everyone picks an additional moment, from 2006-20 When did the White Sox make us saddest? Chrystal O'Keefe and Melissa Sage-Bollenbach, frankly a little bored and finding so little to do South Side Sox-wise lately, chat it up with Brett Ballantini about where the White Sox stand and what lies ahead for the team. The first half of our intended short show (spoiler: It was not short) was devoted to the bright spots of the season. Chrystal chooses Romy González, Melissa the sturdy starting rotation, and Brett, with reluctance, the mere 4 1⁄2 -game deficit the White Sox face despite being, by all accounts, a lousy baseball team Mid-show we roll out some site news, including South Side Sox intern Sage Bollenbach spearheading our new TikTok (@southsidesox_) channel, Melissa's efforts on Facebook (@SouthSideSox), ever-entertaining guests for Chrystal on Visiting Dugout (the podcast that never sleeps), and the looming likelihood of a daily history pod And, on to the bad ... Chrystal's heart breaks a bit in talking about Lance Lynn, Melissa takes down the entire lousy offense, and Brett goes biggest off all, castigating the utter and complete lack of reinforcements at the Double-A or Triple-A levels, at any position Predictions on what happens with Lucas Giolito And yes, Brett defends Rick Hahn. Not gonna tease it any more than that. The position taken is utterly plausible, but the mere notion of defending Rick Hahn in the year of our lord 2023 seems ... wrong Plus, cameos from Freddie Sage-Bollenbach and Willow O'Keefe! We're still a day or two away from our logo being ready — and let me tell you, it's going to be worth the wait. But for entirely “legal” reasons, our podcast is no longer associated with/owned by Vox. (I only — almost — slipped up one time while recording!) On Friday when we recorded, the South Side Sox podcast had dulled itself into Chicago Baseball Podcast on Megaphone/Apple/Spotify et. al. That's such a goofy, generic name, I figured this should be the one time we use it! Anyhow, we'll have a post soon describing a little bit more of what the new podcast vision/network/goodies are. But the important thing for you to know is what you have already discovered: Nothing materially changes for you as a listener, viewer, reader, consumer ... the change has already happened, and you hardly noticed, right? It's Melissa Sage-Bollenbach's third trip to White Sox Spring Training and, after Sarasota and Tucson, her third ST venue to watch the Sox. This time, she's brought along the son who has inherited her fervent South Side fandom, Sage. Both mother and son were kind enough to join me to talk about the up close and personal Camelback Ranch experience, and the eye-opener that was the World Baseball Classic. Right off, both Melissa and Sage agree that this White Sox team has a different vibe. Sure, that's the optimism of March talking ... but only to a degree. As reported in both of Melissa's stories, the White Sox are drilling (with Pedro very much present and engaged as manager) and prepping in a way we haven't seen in at least the past couple of years Melissa shares a couple of easy tips for those who still might be planning on making the trek to Arizona, or want to get in on the fun next year On to the World Baseball Classic, and the absolutely unique experience that rooting for your country (the pair caught Team USA vs. Columbia last week), alongside fellow MLB fans of other clubs you'd never be sitting next to and cheering at the same time during the regular season It's tougher to catch the WBC given it's not an every-year event, but this tournament comes even more highly recommended from both Bollenbachs than the Camelback Ranch/White Sox experience — it's that special Learn more about your ad choices. Taking on this prestigious assignment were Malachi Hayes, Dante Jones, Joe Resis and Melissa Sage-Bollenbach. Guaranteed, you won't see one of our picks coming. Go figure; Brett is the softest voter, having supported all 10 on the ballot for the Hall Melissa states unequivocally that PED or other cheating associations eliminate players from her consideration; after all, Hall election is a privilege and a responsibility Scattered support of David Cone, Bret Saberhagen and Kevin Brown intrigues in the the first half of the podcast, but bites us in the ass in the second half Universally supported, without reservation: Kenny Lofton. Happy Soxivus! We are following up our first year celebrating Soxivus in 2021 with a full two months of festivities in 2022. Last year, we picked managers who could dethrone Tony La Russa in running the White Sox. This week, our Feats of Strength take the form of programming a SoxFest, after the White Sox cancelled their official one for the third straight season. We're overjoyed to have Father Soxivus, Tommy Barbee — the man who hatched the Soxivus plan last year — with us on these podcasts. Joining Tommy to program our Fest are Jordan Hass, Allie Wesel, Melissa Sage-Bollenbach, Joe Resis and Malachi Hayes, with the festivities hosted by Brett Ballantini. Read our accompanying Feats of Strength story on programming Soxivus Fest that much of this podcast refers to, please. Reviewing the short-sighted decision to cancel SoxFest for the third straight year — did someone cheap out on putting down the non-refundable deposit on McCormick Place? We can get up in arms about losing SoxFest and chide Rick Hahn for being afraid to face the music, but it's the hundreds of young fans (and fans who cheer like children, there are many, no shame there) who really lose out On to our SoxivusFest, with Melissa explaining her Run Sox Run activity, which borrows from Herb Lawrence's ill-fated sprint challenge during the season. We think we would fare better Joe's Put Away Pitches event challenges fan managers to make the right call on 1-2. Anything better than in intentional walk comes away with a free SoxivusFest T-shirt. Tommy's Manager Draft cleverly finds a way to cram all of the bad, recycled White Sox manager possibilities into one season, in a sort of college of coaches arrangement. There's also an Inspiration Station that has to be heard or read to be believed Jordan comes through with two fun ideas, starting with Rick Hahn's Mild Ride — duller than white bread. Also, there are outfield tryouts, and if participants manage to injure themselves in exotic (but, for the White Sox, predictable) ways, they'll get a start in 2023 before Oscar Colás Allie stages an intervention for Hahn, with the intention of making him stronger in future trade and free agent negotiations and getting him a true Seat at the Table Malachi puts a twist on the Garage Sale of years past, where creative payment plans are not only encouraged, but expected Adrian Serrano was not able to join the podcast, but did provide events of his own, as well. Additionally, he created our Soxivus 2022 T-shirt available to order at our SSHP store The second half of the podcast — yes, this one is chock-full — addresses the Ozzie Guillén managing rumors. The panel is deadlocked as to whether the White Sox are actually going to hire Ozzie — who, let's review, left the South Side the first time by announcing his new manager position during a game he was managing for the White Sox Learn more about your ad choices.
