In 2019, Scott Morrison's government managed to narrowly win a third term, despite polling placing them behind Labor for almost three years. At the heart of the victory was a change in the way they campaigned, bringing in a pair of New Zealand election strategists armed with a new weapon: low-quality memes. Since then, the duo known as Topham Guerin have brought their political tricks to bigger battlegrounds and have been hired by Peter Dutton ahead of the next federal election. But their methods – including a recent embrace of deepfakes – raise questions about the ethics of political campaigning in the digital age. Today, special correspondent for The Saturday Paper Jason Koutsoukis on the rise of Topham Guerin and the political power of bad memes. Is our subjective experience of Free Will, supported by the experimental evidence? If not, how do we take moral responsibility for our actions? Why do meditators, who're used to watching their thoughts arise and pass without identifying with them, find this data easier to integrate? In this episode, we have the tough job of evaluating the experimental evidence for the existence of Free Will. The debate has raged for centuries in Philosophy, but now with advances in neuroscience and psychology experiments, we have some actual physical evidence to examine, and its implications to reflect on. We're going to discuss how most of those who accept this evidence have chosen to carry on as if it they still have Free Will, which sounds contradictory. Do the implications for personal moral responsibility require us to do that? We're also going to get into meditation and Zen, as our guest today and another famous advocate of the illusion of free will, Sam Harris, are long term practitioners. It seems those who use some kind of mindfulness meditation, and hence are used to watching the way thoughts arise and pass without identifying with them, are less troubled by the idea that they may not have free will. What does all this mean for the reality of a ‘self'? So who better to explain this mind boggling question than, our first returning guest, psychologist, author and visiting Professor at Plymouth University, Susan Blackmore. Best known for her books The Meme Machine, Consciousness: An Introduction, and Seeing Myself, Sue's work spans across hundreds of publications in over 20 different languages, making huge contributions in the fields of psychology, memetics, religion, philosophy of mind, supernatural experience, and many other areas. No idea what that means? Don't worry... neither did the co-hosts! That naughty Parrish loves surprises so he didn't tell Aunt Bo or Coach that one of their favorite guests was coming back to talk about what's hot. Since Episode Seven was called the Emergence of Erin Cummings then it's only fitting to call this episode The Resurgence since it's the return of the stunning actress and friend of the show. She zooms in again from Los Angeles to unleash her savagery and drop some more knowledge like only Cookie can.Parrish brings back HOT BUTTON TOPICS such as:Derek Chauvin's prison sentenceCarl Nassib "coming out."Britney Spears conservatorshipand more!Parrish also introduces a new segment called MEME MACHINE where Oz throws a meme up on the screen for them all to look at and discuss. You never know where the convo will go so give a listen now and see for yourself.

Subjective or Objective? In this Episode we're going to be introducing one of the oldest and most talked about problems in philosophy, the problem of consciousness. Just how does our subjective experience as humans relate to our existence as human bodies with brains? For most of the 20th century you couldn't really talk about this as a serious scientist without being laughed at and told to study something useful. But since the 90's, with the advancement of MRI brain imaging in neuroscience, and the coining the term The ‘Hard Problem' by funky philosopher David Chalmers, Consciousness studies have blossomed back into mainstream science. To kick off the podcast with a bang, and explain the mystery that perhaps underlies all mysteries is psychologist and author and visiting Professor at Plymouth University, Dr Susan Blackmore. Best known for her books The Meme Machine, Zen and the Art of Consciousness, Consciousness: An Introduction, and Seeing Myself, Sue's work spans across hundreds of publications in over 20 different languages, making huge contributions in the fields of psychology, memetics, religion, philosophy of mind, supernatural experience, and many other areas. It is no surprise to find her ranked amongst 2013's 30 Most Influential Psychologists Working Today and 2015's Top 100 Global Minds. In this episode we discuss: 09:12 How do we define consciousness? 15:00 Is dualism an unrealistic position? 18:00 The Hard Problem explained 23:00 Sue's Out of Body and ‘oneness with the universe' experience 36:00 Explaining OBE's biochemically 45:00 the importance of Body Schema 50:00 introducing the various theories of consciousness from materialism to idealism 51:00 Dan Dennet on consciousness 56:00 Illusionism: the belief that consciousness is an illusion 57:00 Galen Strawson and the attraction of panpsychism 58:00 the importance of the 'don't know' mind for studying consciousness 1:05:00 Zen, the self and non-duality 1:14:00 What would a post-self society look like? Chips! One of the things that has caught my eye since the beginning of the private Facebook group is all the clever Memes. Having a little chuckle as the day starts or when it is winding down seems to be an important relief factors from all the worldly chaos. I reached out to Mr. Adam Shepperd who seems to have the pulse of the Meme game. Though memes can be simply easy to make, the creative behind the words and the times to post them may not be. Also, Adam had a personal post that touched a lot of fellow CMU hearts. November is a month that recognizes and gives thanks to our Military Veterans. The story of Adam's grandfather serving in World War II and receiving his share of thanks from CMU alumni brings warm tears to the heart.Music in this episode is provide by Dan Louisell from his album "Automaton" available on iTunes. I first listened to the entire album on Spotify and then made the decision to purchase. In my personal preface, I purchase music that I like so I don't have to use up and go over data, or be effective by bad cell phone coverage. It is nice to have the music at a push of a button when I am running. More over, I love purchasing music to artists who don't have the big label behind them. Dan is a fellow chip and I feel proud in doing my part to help support his creative talents. Please check him out! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K3NBPLztfzw&list=PLJalFy3XosCzcAzUYUnric4pdCpIvJC5O&index=5I can be reached at firedupforever@yahoo.com. The smell of coffee, the taste of asparagus, the warmth of a hug, and the agony of death: conscious experience makes up the fabric of our world, yet many consider it to be the most intractable mystery in philosophy and science. What is it like to undergo experience? What is the function of consciousness? Where does consciousness occur? What are the contents of this experience? Is our stream of consciousness unified? The hardest problem of all, might be the origin of consciousness itself: how, why, or are we, subjects of experience? In one sense, it shouldn’t come as a surprise - after all, in the words of physicist Michio Kaku, ‘Sitting on your shoulders is the most complicated object in the known universe; 100 billion neurons, each connected to 10,000 others’. However, for many, the brain doesn’t seem like the right type of thing to give rise to consciousness. How can soggy grey matter feel like anything? As McGinn put it, you might as well believe that numbers emerge from biscuits or ethics from rhubarb! Challenging our understanding of consciousness and reframing the mystery is psychologist and author, Visiting Professor at Plymouth University, Dr Susan Blackmore. Best known for her books The Meme Machine, Zen and the Art of Consciousness, Consciousness: An Introduction, and Seeing Myself, Susan’s work spans across hundreds of publications in over 20 different languages, making huge contributions in the fields of psychology, memetics, religion, philosophy of mind, supernatural experience, and many other areas. It is no surprise to find her ranked amongst 2013’s 30 Most Influential Psychologists Working Today and 2015’s Top 100 Global Minds. It’s time to smell the coffee, and reflect on your experience, to see the dark with the light on: what is the nature of consciousness? Contents Part I. Mystery and Illusion Part II. In an out-of-body experience (OBE), people feel as though they have left their physical body and can see the world from outside it. What are these experiences, and are they spiritual? As a 19 year-old psychology student, Susan Blackmore had an extraordinarily powerful OBE that lasted for hours and culminated in a mystical experience of transformation and oneness. Her determination to understand what had happened led Susan to becoming a parapsychologist – a profession she later gave up, zen training, and decades of research into the nature of mind and consciousness. In this talk, Susan will explore the surprising science of out-of-body experiences, whether anything really leaves the body during an OBE, and their profound effect on our sense of self. Sue Blackmore is a psychologist, lecturer and writer researching consciousness, memes, and anomalous experiences, and a Visiting Professor at the University of Plymouth. She is a TED lecturer, blogs for the Guardian, and often appears on radio and television. The Meme Machine (1999) has been translated into 16 other languages; more recent books include Conversations on Consciousness (2005), Zen and the Art of Consciousness (2011), Seeing Myself: The new science of out-of-body experiences (2017) and a textbook Consciousness: An Introduction (3rd Ed 2018). She is best known for her book The Meme Machine, and has written or contributed to over 40 books, mostly on consciousness. In this episode, we focus on memetics. First, Dr. Blackmore gives a proper definition of memetics, and then we talk about some specific criticisms, some of them coming from my interview with Drs. Robert Boyd and Peter Richerson, namely units of culture, and memes as viruses. We briefly discuss free will, and then move on to talk about imitation as the basis for memetics, and other cognitive mechanisms that an animal needs to have to have culture and memes. Toward the end, we also talk about how new technologies, like the internet, are changing the way memetics works. -- Follow Dr. Blackmore's work: Website: https://www.susanblackmore.uk/ Articles on Researchgate: https://bit.ly/2Vy4Rx9 Books on Amazon: https://amzn.to/2UJrU3K Susan Blackmore: Memes and “temes” (TED talk): https://bit.ly/2XYX757 The Meme Machine: https://amzn.to/2ZSc5vs The Selfish Gene: https://amzn.to/2DAOjug A couple of relevant articles: Memes and the evolution of religion: We need memetics, too: https://bit.ly/2GQRzDJ Delusions of consciousness: https://bit.ly/2voGVOf Memetics Does Provide a Useful Way of Understanding Cultural Evolution: https://bit.ly/2PEnSsC -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS: KARIN LIETZCKE, ANN BLANCHETTE, SCIMED, PER HELGE HAAKSTD LARSEN, LAU GUERREIRO, RUI BELEZA, MIGUEL ESTRADA, ANTÓNIO CUNHA, CHANTEL GELINAS, JIM FRANK, JERRY MULLER, FRANCIS FORD, HANS FREDRIK SUNDE, BRIAN RIVERA, ADRIANO ANDRADE, YEVHEN BODRENKO, SERGIU CODREANU, ADAM BJERRE, ŁUKASZ STAFINIAK, AIRES ALMEIDA, BERNARDO SEIXAS, AND HERBERT GINTIS! Dr. Susan Blackmore is no stranger to skeptics. Dr. Shermer has known Dr. Blackmore since the early 1990s. When the Skeptics Society and Skeptic magazine were founded in 1992 she was already a rock star in the skeptical movement, having moved from believing in the paranormal, ESP, telepathy, and all the rest, to being an arch skeptic of all such claims. After earning a Ph.D. in the paranormal she devoted a decade to testing various phenomena under rigorous laboratory conditions, and continually found null results. That is, the tighter the controls she implemented and the more rigorous the research protocols, the weaker the paranormal effects became until they disappeared entirely. She went on from there to develop a theory about the neural correlates of such altered states of consciousness as Out of Body Experiences and Near Death Experiences, and after that wrote her bestselling book The Meme Machine, in which she developed a theory of how memes can be replicated and selected in a manner first proposed by Richard Dawkins in The Selfish Gene, when he coined the term. Dr. Blackmore went on to publish one of the leading textbooks on consciousness and is now working on a theory of tremes, or technological memes and how they can be replicated and selected in machines without human input. After working in media, PR and politics, Jeff Ballingall understands the political power of Facebook. His top Facebook page gets more engagement than the Globe and Mail and the Toronto Star combined. Spanning vicious attacks in rap form to sentimental content about landmarks, Ontario Proud is in a meme war against Liberal Premier Kathleen Wynne. And they're really effective. In this week's episode, we travel once again down to Hall of Justice Comics and Collectibles to celebrate Local Comic Shop Day, and their 1 year anniversary since opening up. For our regular portion of the show we talk about the new trailers that dropped for Justice League Dark, A Series of Unfortunate, and for Rooster Teeth's new documentary called The Meme Machine. We also got the news that the series Rat Queens is coming back in March 2017, which is exciting since it was put into limbo after the artist had to leave the series when it restarted back earlier this year. We then have a portion of the podcast that we are tentatively calling the "What are you watching" segment, where we discuss things that we are currently watching, new title pending. This week since were all still on the anime train, we talk about more anime series! Zach B talks about "Gangsta", Zach S talks about "Kids on a Slope", and Steve talks about "Drifters" this week! We then have our roundtable discussion with several people around the shop, including Matt and Marika from the Colorado Comic Book Enthusiast Facebook group, where they both talk about what they like about comics and some of the things they see go on within the comics fandom. We then bring on Garreth of Red Team Go, where he talks about the projects he's worked on and new ones that are coming up from their team. Lastly, we bring Jon of Hall of Justice Comics and Collectibles back on the show again to talk about things that surprised him this year and some of the goals that he has for his second year of shop owning. More at http://philosophytalk.org/shows/memes-viruses-mind. Gangnam style, Lolcats, and Chuck Norris’ superhuman feats are all memes – units of cultural transmission – that spread through the internet. But when the term was originally coined, memes were posited as vehicles of a kind of evolution, similar to genes and biological evolution. So are the memes that colonize our brains simply those that survive natural selection? Don’t we get any say in the viruses that populate our minds? What happens if the fittest memes are also the most detrimental to us? John and Ken spread ideas with Susan Blackmore from the University of Plymouth, author of "The Meme Machine."
Check us out on LetsGoTribe.com! I don't know about you guys, but I am unironically pumped that the Cleveland Indians signed Juan Uribe. Naturally, I made sure to bring it up on the podcast, and at the very least, we can all agree he is going to fun to write about. There were some other non-Uribe things to discuss of course, such as the fact that goofy Spring Training games are just a week away. Jason and I also review the Top 10 Indians prospects as voted on by the Let's Go Tribe community, including why Mike Trout and Bryce Harper have ruined everything when it comes to evaluating prospects. We did not go in-depth with numbers 11 through 20 in the podcast, but you can find more on them here. Also, we asked around for questions to answer and got some pretty interesting ones. Dr. Susan Blackmore is a writer, researcher, and speaker best known for her book "The Meme Machine." At the American Atheists 2015 convention in Memphis, Tennessee, Jessica spoke with Susan about the mystery of consciousness, Blackmore's fascination with memes, and why she avoids most forms of social media. (Image via Wikipedia)
Meet Susan Blackmore, the world’s foremost expert on memes. The intro to her seminal work The Meme Machine was written by none other than genius biologist and fundamentalist atheist blowhard Richard Dawkins. Her lectures on TED receives millions of views— even despite TED's dishwater-dull format when compared to Litopia After Dark (rowr!) “Man becomes, as it were, the sex organs of the machine world,” said Marshal McLuhan. Never has this been more true. (Full quote: Man becomes, as it were, the sex organs of the machine world, as the bee of the plant world, enabling it to fecundate and to evolve ever new forms.) But do memes actually exist? Or are they simply metaphors to observe our shifting culture? And who is Susan Blackmore anyway? After an out of body experience she studied the paranormal for 24 years, only to arrive at the conclusion it was bollocks— all of it. So who’s to say she won’t soon say the same about memes? But wait, there’s more! Now she’d like for us to consider what she calls temes— technology assisted memes. Replicators so powerful they may yet turn our computers against us— and sooner than you think. Just ask Stephen Hawking. Because your Macbook Pro is spreading words, tunes, images and ideas much faster than your feeble human mind can imagine. Check everything you think you know about memes at the door. Because this show is no lecture. This show is virus inside of your mind. Spread the word. (PS - Blackmore's explosive article on fellow Litopia After Dark guest Susan Greenfield can be found here!) Sue Blackmore is a psychologist and writer whose research on consciousness, memes, and the paranormal has been published in over sixty academic papers, as well as book chapters, reviews and popular articles. She regularly writes in the Guardian, and often appears on radio and television in the United States and the United Kingdom. She spent two decades early in her career investigating psychic phenomena, following an out-of-body experience she had as a student at Oxford. She is the author of a number of books, including Dying to Live (on near-death experiences), In Search of the Light, and Test Your Psychic Powers (with Adam Hart-Davis). The Meme Machine (1999) has been widely acclaimed, and translated into 13 other languages. Her highly praised textbook, Consciousness: An Introduction, and A Very Short Introduction to Consciousness are both published by Oxford University Press, as is her most recent Conversations on Consciousness. In this far-ranging discussion with D.J. Grothe, Susan Blackmore talks about her research into the paranormal and near death experiences and why she left that field of study, memetics and religion as a meme, free will and the question of moral responsibility, consciousness and the illusory nature of the self, and Zen Buddhism and meditative practice, among other topics. She also explores why is it more important than ever for scientists to speak out about important issues of concern in the world today.
