POPULARITY
The Dick Bright Orchestra has built a reputation as being San Francisco's premier social band. They also travel to perform throughout the U.S. for conventions, corporate events, fundraisers, weddings, and private parties. Based on Dick Bright's colorful career history, we couldn't wait to interview him and share more with you about what makes him so knowledgable and entertaining. Enjoy! Born in Santa Monica, California, and grew up in West Los Angeles, Rod Serling was president of his junior high school, and actress Katey Sagal from Married With Children was in his high school acting class! Dick's father was a public school music teacher at the same school for forty five years, taught private lessons, and played weddings and bar mitzvahs on the weekends. Dick attended to Palisades High School in Pacific Palisades where he played in the orchestra and took acting classes – loving both arts. “It's why I like combining music with a flair for a show and comedy as well. Sybil Maxwell, my violin teacher, was one of the top teachers in Los Angeles (she studied with Jascha Heifetz considered the world's greatest violinist), and I was being groomed to hopefully grow up and play in a major symphony. When I got to UC Davis I discovered girls and rock and roll. Needless to say, my classical career was over. I went on to double major in music and acting.” Dick went straight from college to play in an original rock band in Berkeley, California called Little Roger and the Goosebumps. We had a novelty hit called Stairway to Gilligan's Island—the words from Gilligan's Island and the music from Stairway to Heaven. Led Zepplin threatened a law suit. We got mentioned in Rolling Stone. I was hooked on show biz by then. For twenty five years Dick's been performing the National Anthem for the Golden State Warriors and San Francisco Giants. “As a sports nut, so this is probably the biggest thrill every year — to step on the court or the field. I feel like I'm about twelve years old! Plus it's the most nervous I get (no band to cover my mistakes!). I even got to do God Bless America at a World Series game and the anthem for the Home Run Derby when it was at AT&T Park.”
This Day in Enhanced History:August 7, 2007, Giants slugger Barry Bonds became the all-time home run king when he belted his 756th roundtripper. Bonds hit the milestone homer in the fifth inning into the right-center field bleachers off Mike Bacsik of the Nationals at AT&T Park.Milestones:August 7, 2004, Cubs' pitcher Greg Maddux wins his 300th career game, becoming the 22nd member of the 300-Win Club. Maddux defeats the Giants, going five innings and allowing four earned runs at SBC Park in San Francisco.August 7, 1999, Wade Boggs of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays becomes the first major leaguer to hit a home run for his 3,000th hit. Boggs connects against Chris Haney of the Cleveland Indians, just one day after Tony Gwynn collected his 3,000th hit.August 7, 1907, Walter Johnson picks up his first major league victory. The Washington Senators' rookie defeats the Cleveland Indians, 6-2. Johnson will win 417 games during his Hall of Fame career.Cooperstown Calls:August 7, 1972, the Hall of Fame inducts one of its largest classes ever. The list of eight new members includes Yogi Berra - presently the manager of the New York Mets - Negro leagues stars Josh Gibson and Buck Leonard, and standout pitchers Sandy Koufax and Early Wynn.Oddities:1901 - Ban Johnson suspends Baltimore 1B Burt Hart for striking umpire John Haskell yesterday, stating "This is the first time a player in the American League has struck an umpire, and it is an offense that cannot be overlooked." The 31-year-old Hart will never play again. Births: 1886 - Bill McKechnie, infielder, manager; Hall of Famer - Bill McKechnie was the first manager to ever guide three different teams to the World Series, and he won championships in Pittsburgh and Cincinnati, both in seven games. Despite eight seasons at the helm of the Braves, where he won less than 46% of the time, McKechnie retired with a respectable .524 winning mark and more than 1,800 victories. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1962.
Angie Annett started out on an internship for the San Francisco Giants that lead to creating all graphic design and animation project content for the scoreboard, web, and television. Which lead to creating innovative, original graphic takeovers for up to 30 different special events at AT&T Park, including Pixar, Star Wars, and Metallica Day. Not a bad start for an animation graduate who wanted to create her own theme park. Now Angie is creating a deep, virtual esports experience for Blizzard. Take a listen to her career path and just what it takes to entertain and inform a stadium full of fans. And of course check out more Creative Mind on our blog, Instagram, and YouTube pages. Yahoo’s Scott Pianowski chats with Elite Fantasy’s Vlad Sedler about the growing optimism around a 2020 MLB season, how rumors of a universal DH could impact the fantasy landscape, and some of the big picture fantasy baseball strategies they’ve relied on over the years.Leading off, Scott and Vlad look at some of the players they might bump up their draft boards if the National League adopts a designated hitter — either for the 2020 season or permanently. (01:17)If baseball adopts a one, two, or three-state plan moving all games to Arizona, Texas, and/or Florida, that means a lot of players who deal with the extreme ends of park effects are going to have their values change. We’ll look at some of the players who usually play in Coors Field in Colorado and San Francisco’s AT&T Park that’ll be moving up and down our draft boards. (09:12)Some fantasy mangers are trade tacticians, others scour the waiver wire for break out players. Scott and Vlad discuss some of their fantasy adages, like the importance of FAAB management, why it’s okay to make a mistake and the usefulness of an official co-manager. (13:53)We’ll take a look at Vlad’s cheat sheet while he tells us the guys he likes and doesn’t like in fantasy drafts, including the Dodgers’ Gavin Lux (like!), and the Twins’ Jose Berrios (don’t like!). (25:03)And we’ll wrap up the show with a draft of our all-time favorite Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, formerly knows as the Anaheim Angels, formerly known as the California Angels. A quick spoiler, this was one draft where Mike Trout did not go #1 overall. Welcome to another podcast episode of Family Table Talk ! During today’s show we are eating PDQ’s. While hosting a mukbang we speak about white people (Permit Patty / BBQ Becky) racially targeting black people. Let’s eat & talk about our thoughts / opinions of this topic. These incidents keep happening… (Permit Patty) Alison Ettel was caught on camera confronting an 8-year-old girl selling water to passersby near AT&T Park. The video quickly went viral and sparked a wider conversation about black people being censured for seemingly harmless acts. Ettel says she’s sorry and that the incident had nothing to do with race. “I am used to hearing a lot of noise, but not … shouting and yelling in a continuous manner. It was this completely repetitive, every second,” she said. Erin Austin, the mother of 8-year-old Jordan Rodgers, who was selling water bottles on the day in question, says “She came out and walked directly up to my daughter and asked to see the permit,” “She’s not a loud kid. She’s not screaming. The men on the street selling parking passes are louder than her.” Austin says she doesn’t believe Ettel had a problem with noise. (BBQ Becky) Oakland, Ca – At around 11:20 AM A white woman approached a black man named Deacon for having a BBQ grill at Lake Merritt. She told him he could not BBQ there and called the police. She would not leave Deacon alone. A young black woman was walking by overheard how the white woman was telling him he can not be there, she stopped and asked the woman to leave her alone. The white woman became aggressive with the woman. She started filming the woman’s aggressive behavior and has said it’s up on Facebook (probably a live stream). Shortly after that Deacon’s friend Kenzie arrived. According to Kenzie, the woman said “Oh another ni**er.” She proceeded to tell all three of the people at the BBQ table that she owned the park, and they are not allowed there. She also said them they were going to jail. Kenzie’s wife was up the street finishing brunch at Lakeshore Ave. He texted me a picture of the white woman and said: “If I go to jail this who did it to me.” So she walked over to the scene, and that’s where the video starts. She arrived 12:50 pm. The police did not stop the BBQ. They spoke with Deacon about an hour later and said they were BBQ-ing in a permitted zone. http://www.aleeaspreciouslife.com/white-people-permit-patty-bbq-becky-vs-black-people-racially-targeted/

It's difficult to look at the San Diego Padres and think "now there's an exciting baseball team!", but it's a lot easier to look at the FOX-TV show Pitch and think "now there's an exciting TV show about baseball!". We used that reasoning this week to close out the NL West preview as writer Jason Holtham of the aforementioned FOX-TV show Pitch joins us to discuss the fictional Padres, a far more entertaining subject. If you haven't watched Pitch yet, the entire first season (just 10 episodes!) is available to stream on Hulu. It's fun and interesting and has for a backdrop a recognizable world of Major League Baseball. They even managed to characterize the fictional Giants in ways that are familiar. That said, listen to Jason's story about when the TV show shot at AT&T Park... We also talk to Adam Peterson of Purple Row about those Colorado Rockies. It turns out, while the Giants have been focusing their attention on the Dodgers, the Rockies have been stockpiling pitchers. Will this obnoxious team annoy the Giants even more this season? Probably. But will that annoyance propel them into a playoff race? And, of course, we answer your Twitter questions. They were a bit more existenstial than usual, and that's okay. This week’s featured chef on Chef’s Story is Traci Des Jardins, Chef/Owner of Jardinière, Mijita Cocina Mexicana
and Chef/Partner of Public House. Before opening Jardinière in San Francisco in 1997, Des Jardins worked in some of the highly acclaimed kitchens in Los Angeles, France, and New York City. Classically trained in French cuisine by some of the best chefs and restaurateurs in the world, Des Jardins style is also influenced by her Mexican and French-Acadian grandparents who taught her how to cook. Throughout her more than two decades in San Francisco, Des Jardins has continued to focus and evolve her style of cooking as well as her restaurants. Over the course of her successful career she has trained and groomed many chefs and front-of-the-house personnel, many of whom now help operate her growing group of restaurants. In 2004 Des Jardins opened Mijita Cocina Mexicana in the San Francisco Ferry Building and in 2010 the second location at AT&T Park, combining the best of Bay Area seasonal and local ingredients with the traditional Mexican flavors of her youth. Adjacent to Mijita and located at AT&T Park, home of the 2010 World Series Champion San Francisco Giants, Traci’s Public House is a sports bar serving California influenced pub food. Known as one of the top female chefs in the country, Des Jardins is a two-time James Beard award-winner and has earned a number of industry accolades throughout her career. Des Jardins sits on the board of La Cocina, a San Francisco based non-profit business incubator and on the advisory board of Bocuse d’Or USA, joining fellow chefs in the quest to elevate culinary excellence in the United States. She is a deeply committed activist and philanthropist working with hunger-relief organizations such as Share Our Strength, Citymeals On-Wheels and other non-profits such as amfAR. This program was brought to you by Whole Foods Market. “If you’re going to own your own business you better understand what a P&L is. You can lose a lot of money very quickly if you’re not paying attention.” [33:00] “I see lots of young women who come through my kitchen and when they decide to have a child never come back to the kitchen. Motherhood is enthralling and having a child is tough competition for wanting to come back and work. It’s a tough dilemma for women in general.” [44:00] –Traci Des Jardins on Chef’s Story

Willie, Chad and Ben welcome Jen Cosgriff and Chelena Goldman to our season preview podcast bonanza, recorded LIVE at the Public House at AT&T Park. They probably wished they hadn't agreed to come. And we saw Brian Wilson give up all the runs against the Padres as we recorded. And Willie is okay at pool.
Chad and Ben corner George Kontos at Media Day at AT&T Park and find out that he owns every single "Friends" episode. Seriously? Also, he developed a new pitch over the offseason that will hopefully help mix up pitches that hitters often anticipate from him. Be sure to check out our interviews with Matt Cain, Sergio Romo and other Giants players at TortureCast.com!
Chad and Ben interview the Giants' new left fielder Michael Morse at Media Day at AT&T Park. We ask him about the "phantom" grand slam he hit with the Nationals 2 years ago, what sport he would've like to have played professionally, other than baseball, and one baseball rule he'd like to change.
Chad and Ben interviewed Giants' starting pitcher Matt Cain during Media Day at AT&T Park and asked him about his 2013 first half slump, golfing at AT&T Pro-Am, what baseball rule he'd like to change, getting "Cained," and surprisingly, he wants Chad to take him SCUBA diving in Monterey.
Chad and Ben sat down with Giants closer Sergio Romo at Media Day at AT&T Park before the start of spring training. We talk about his takeover of the Warriors' Twitter account, what he would have like to have played professionally if it weren't for baseball, and he hates that inherited runners that score count as an earned run. Be sure to check out our other interviews with Matt Cain, Michael Morse, Javier Lopez and others!
