Exodus 32 is where we read about the Golden Calf that the Israelites made, because of their fear of living in the wilderness without Moses. It is amazing to me, that they were so quick to abandon the God who just liberated them from being slaves, walking on dry land through the Red Sea, and now they moved from their God to a god made from their own hands. Golden Calves have symbolized this transaction ever since. Today, we might be still struggling with Golden Calves in the Church. YOU'D THINK that being anointed king over the northern tribes because of Solomon's disobedience to God would have caused Jeroboam to be more careful about his theology. We follow up last week's study with the consequences of Jeroboam's decision to set up altars with golden calves. Contrary to some who teach that the golden calves were idols representing God, we believe the locations—Bethel (“House of El”) and Dan, at the foot of Mount Hermon—point to the Canaanite father-god El, whose main epithet was “Bull El.” Mount Hermon was El's “mount of assembly,” which is one of the reasons we argue that El was Shemihazah, leader of the sons of God who rebelled in Genesis 6:1–4. Because Jeroboam drew the northern tribes back into the worship of El, who was known as Dagon to the Philistines and Milcom (Molech) to the Ammonites, God sent a prophet to decree that a future king named Josiah would desecrate Jeroboam's altars by sacrificing the priests of the high places and burning human bones on them. Bear in mind that Jeroboam began his reign over the northern kingdom in 930 BC and Josiah would not become king of Judah until 640 BC, 290 years later! In fact, the ink hasn't even dried yet on this covenant agreement between God and his people before they go ahead and break it. And, boy, do they break it. They break it in such a grand fashion that it's almost comical. In fact, Moses even notes that the enemies of the people stand at a distance amused. They saw this dark humor that these people, who had been delivered by God, were abandoning him so early and worshiping a God made out of their own earrings. The treachery of the human heart is no laughing matter, however. And Moses pleads with God. He appeals to God, to the covenant promises of God made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob based on the relationship that he had with these people, that he knew by name. He does not appeal to the covenant law. He doesn't appeal to God as judge. No. He appeals to his relationship and to the relationship he had with the three patriarchs, which was established in faith. Abraham believed that God would make his descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky, just like God told him. He believed that all the nations of the earth would be blessed through his seed, through his descendant, that a champion, a messiah, would come through him, and that this messiah would transform the treacherous, law-breaking, idol-worshiping hearts of every human being. He would do it by invading our humanity and putting on flesh. He would accomplish what we could not do. He would remain faithful where we have been faithless, and he would offer himself as a perfect sacrifice on our behalf that we might have that relationship with God that we were created for, restored and renewed, and he would do this on behalf of all. And that includes you, my friend. He has come to draw you in to his very life. The vicarious humanity of Christ. Christ being faithful where you have not been faithful. Christ being obedient when we failed to be obedient. Christ forgiving when we have failed to forgive. Christ being all in all, on behalf of all. And the prayer of my own heart today is that I will see it. I'll catch a greater glimpse of that good news that Philip saw, of the good news that Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob saw, that I will see it, and that I will know his freedom and his joy. And that's a prayer that I have for my family too, for my wife and my daughters and my son. And that's a prayer that I have for you. May it be so. TODAY'S PRAYERS: Lord God Almighty and everlasting father you have brought us in safety to this new day preserve us with your Mighty power that we might not fall into sin or be overcome by adversity. And in all we do, direct us to the fulfilling of your purpose through Jesus Christ Our Lord amen. Oh God you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth and sent your blessed son to preach peace to those who are far and those who are near. Grant that people everywhere may seek after you, and find you. Bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit on all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen. And now Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
