#147 Shelley Farnham & Julia Harris - Complex Strengths and Complex Connexions Shelley and Julia talk to us about navigating complex strengths and the importance of connections!  We talk about: Julia navigating school when neurodivergent and feeling that her ‘soul was too loud'. The importance of authenticity and being able to be themselves. And what they would choose to eat if they were invited to lunch with the Queen! Julia (JuliaArtsJulia) is a neurodivergent (ADHD+) mum of two neurodivergent/not-so-typical sons. An artist, children's entertainer, and also neurodiversity mentor, educator and trainer at - Complex Strengths and The Neurodiverse Universe. Shelley worked as a teacher in South Africa and then as a Teaching Assistant and SEN Support in the UK. She also has a son who is Autistic and ADHD. She started Complex Connexions as she is passionate about supporting other parents to focus on understanding, communicating and so, most importantly, on building connection with their neurodivergent child.  Julia and Shelley have combined their strengths to create and deliver their fabulous 'All on Board for Families' course, a 5-week group coaching course to support parents of neurodivergent children. The course uses the analogy of the family being the crew on board a ship, moving from the overwhelm and confusion of struggle rock towards calm.  Full Bios Julia Harris (JuliaArtsJulia) is a neurodivergent (ADHD+) mum of two neurodivergent/not-so-typical sons. An artist, children's entertainer, and also neurodiversity mentor, educator and trainer at - Complex Strengths and The Neurodiverse Universe. Julia has about over 30 years' experience of supporting neurodivergent individuals both professionally and personally, which adds to her personal experience of over 50 neurodivergent years. Driven by a passionate belief, present since childhood, that much was amiss about how adults interact with Young People, Julia has independently studied many modalities that explore human traits and behaviours, and how to heal the many relationships that are part of human life.  Shelley Farnham worked as a teacher in South Africa and then as a Teaching Assistant and SEN Support in the UK. She also has a son who is Autistic and ADHD.  Although she had a teaching degree and worked in education, when her son began to experience difficulties at home and school, she had to embark on a steep learning curve - with little information and support available at the time, this was very self-directed and involved a lot of late night googling!  When she began a course for parents of neurodivergent young people and realised how much it was helping her as a parent and also as an educator, she knew she had to share its principles and so Complex Connexions was created! She wants to support other parents to focus on understanding, communicating and so, most importantly, on building connection with their neurodivergent child.    Key Resources: Inspiration North Website - www.inspirationnorth.com Inspiration North Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/inspirationnorth  Inspiration North Twitter - https://twitter.com/Inspirationorth  Inspiration North Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/inspiration_north/  Inspiration North LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/inspiration-north   Julia on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/juliaartsjulia/ Julia Arts Website - https://juliaarts.co.uk/  The Neurodiverse Universe Website - https://www.theneurodiverseuniverse.com/  Complex Strengths and The Neurodiverse Universe on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/ComplexStrengths  All On-Board Families Course - https://www.theneurodiverseuniverse.com/all-on-board-families    Complex Connexions Website - https://www.complexconnexions.co.uk/  Shelley on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/shelley.farnham/  Shelley on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/shelleyfarnham/  Complex Connexions on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/complexconnexions  Shelley's previous Inspiration North Podcast - https://www.inspirationnorth.com/podcast/episode/363b735b/75-shelley-and-jess-farnham-dont-judge-a-person-by-what-you-see

Gavin Grey: Britain clamps down to fight virus, but confusion still reigns

Confusion rippled through Britain on Tuesday, a day after Prime Minister Boris Johnson ordered a three-week halt to all non-essential activity to fight the spread of the new coronavirus.Streets were empty but some subways were full. Hairdressers were closed but construction sites were open. People in romantic relationships wondered whether they could see their boyfriends or girlfriends if they weren't living together. The government has ordered most stores to close, banned gatherings of more than two people who don't live together and told everyone apart from essential workers to leave home only to buy food and medicines or to exercise.“You must stay at home,” Johnson said in a somber address to the nation on Monday evening. But even as the U.K. recorded its biggest single-day increase in COVID-19 deaths, commuters crowded onto London subway trains Tuesday, amid confusion about who was still allowed to go to work.As of Tuesday, Britain had 8,077 confirmed cases of COVID-19, and 422 deaths, 87 more deaths than a day earlier.Julia Harris, a London nurse, said her morning train to work was full.“I worry for my health more on my commute than actually being in the hospital," she said.Sporting goods chain Sports Direct said its shops would remain open, arguing that selling exercise equipment was an essential service. It reversed course after an outcry from the public and officials. Many building sites remained open, with construction workers among those crowding onto early-morning subways.Electrician Dan Dobson said construction workers felt “angry and unprotected,” but felt they had to keep working."None of them want to go to work, everyone is worried about taking it home to their families,” he said. "But they still have bills to pay, they still have rent to pay, they still have to buy food.”Authorities sent mixed messages. British Treasury chief Rishi Sunak defended keeping construction sites open, insisting it could be done safely. Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, however, said construction sites should close unless the building work was “essential.”Some closed voluntarily. Construction was halted on London’s huge Crossrail train project, and home builder Taylor Wimpey stopped work on all its sites.London Mayor Sadiq Khan implored employers: "Please support your staff to work from home unless it's absolutely necessary. Ignoring these rules means more lives lost.”Many families were also confused by the new rules. After Johnson said people should not mingle outside of their household units, separated parents asked whether their children could still travel between their homes. Cabinet minister Michael Gove initially said children should not move between households, before clarifying that it was permitted. As for couples who don't cohabitate, England's deputy chief medical officer, Jenny Harries, said "they should test the strength of their relationship” and decide whether to move in together.“What we do not want is people switching in and out of households. ... Test really carefully your strength of feeling," Harries advised. The restrictions are the most draconian ever imposed by a British government in peacetime. But they don’t go as far as lockdowns in Italy and France, where people need a document authorizing their movements. The government said police would have powers to break up illegal gatherings and fine people who flout the rules. But some expressed doubts about whether the lockdown could be enforced.Britain has lost thousands of police officers during a decade of public spending cuts by Conservative-led governments. Johnson has promised to recruit 20,000 more police officers, but those efforts are still in the early stages. Unlike some other European countries, Britons do not carry ID cards, another factor complicating enforcement efforts."There is no way really that the police can enforce this using powers. It has got to be because the public hugely support it,” Peter Fahy, former chief con...

With Welsh and Irish blood, it seems only natural that Beck was going to be drawn to all things Celtic – everything from the Celtic artwork and mythology, Druidic reverence for nature and trees, tales of banshees, wraiths and faeries, to the musical instruments and haunting singing-styles. There is definitely a strong Celtic thread in Beck Siàn’s music – even when singing Australian songs and modern compositions. Related to English singer Kate Bush, it was her influence and artistic inspiration (as well as having a talented artist for a father) that sparked Beck's own desire to dance, sing and create. So we're incredibly proud to be able to bring you this astounding example of her music, with Moss! Be transported along with us into strange and fey realms.... You can find out more about Beck Siàn and where to get hold of her fantastic music on her Contributor Page or on her website.   Dance of the Satyrs by Daemonia Nymphe What a performance, what stage presence and what an astounding sound! So, we are really pleased to offer her a huge welcome back with her beautiful Harp and a gentle, romantic track called A leaf falls.. Kim Thompsett is a musician and songwriter living and working in the South East of England. She plays guitar, flute, native American flute and zither. Set up in 2006 by myself, "A J" Machin and my daughter Natalie, the company was created after we met Richard Taylor & Tania Rodger, co-owners of Weta Workshop, at the Fellowship Festival in 2005. Richard and Tania were very impressed when they saw Steve dressed in King Théoden's war armour which we had built and said that we were "incredibly talented people". This was all the inspiration we needed to create and re-create costumes for like-minded people, at affordable prices. " The rest.. as they say.. is history! You can find out more about these amazing costumiers on their website.   Andrasta by Jonathan Kershaw Bizarre Tales "'Too medieval to be folk; too folk to be rock; too rock to be medieval...!' Jonathan is a guitarist/songwriter originally from Yorkshire in northern England but now based on the south coast. Although known in various areas for his rock playing, he has quietly been applying his talents to an altogether different sound. In his early 20s, Jonathan relocated for a number of years to Somerset in the Southwest of the UK. This was quite a rural area and provided his first insight into folk and Celtic style music. Andrasta (Andraste) was the Romano-Celtic goddess of war. Her name means the "Invincible One". Andrasta was a patron goddess of the Iceni tribe. It was said that Boudicca, the British warrior queen prayed to Andrasta, before going into battle the against her Roman foes. It is believed that the goddess received human sacrifices. [source] Queen Boudicca by John Opie Acoustic Goth A quick mention that both Jonathan Kershaw and Beck Siàn are touring together with a collection of their music with a Beautiful Ghosts and Bizarre Tales tour! He has us spellbound with his intricate music built up using his specialist, self-designed guitar (with a wiring loom to make Mercedes-Benz proud!) and multiple loop-machines to add vocal layering. He built up songs that were almost operatic in scope (along with a unique version of Shine On, You Crazy Diamond which can be found on YouTube!). We were also lucky enough to see him perform a soulful duet of 'Vincent' with Beck Siàn! Ash's studio and Live work are focused differently. The stage show is about entertainment. The studio work is about making art. The live show incorporates hats, stories, comedy, loop machines, a double necked guitar and theatrical engagement with the audience. All soundscapes are built live without the use of backing tracks. Choice of genre is wide ranging and eclectic. The show brings together covers and originals in sets which are carefully crafted to move through changes in energy and emotional states, leaving the audience on a high.
