This week's episode is with Charlie Mullins OBE, the founder of Pimlico Plumbing and the self-styled ‘most famous plumber in the world'.Charlie was born in 1952 in north London to a working class family. In his own words, they were very poor, and he remembers going to school with holes in his clothes. He began working from the age of 8 or 9, and that work ethic stuck. He started his company when he was still in his twenties, and sold it two years ago for £147m.He was awarded an OBE in 2015 for services to business, and has been an advisor to a handful of prime ministers and governments. We talk about a lot of topics, including his upbringing, what kind of father and husband he thinks he was, his recent ban from Twitter - having, in his words, stepped over the line when speaking about London Mayor Sadiq Khan, and how that is likely to impact his own Mayoral ambitions, how he thinks he wouldn't have said those things was he in better health at the time, the new business he's creating that will rival Pimlico Plumbing - and how he doesn't care that they're upset about his new venture, and much, much more.Charlie says some things, both in this conversation and outside of it, which I don't necessarily agree with. I think it's important to be able to sit across a table and have conversations with people we might not always agree with, in good faith.I think all too often, in 2023, we are seemingly, collectively, almost foaming at the mouth in our want for people to be punished and cancelled. I think that's a dangerous game to play, and a sure way to ensure that the question isn't if something we've done or said comes back to bite us on the backside, but when. I'm sure there's a phrase about throwing stones and glass houses that applies, and I would sooner have a conversation than maintain this polarisation. At the best, opinions shift. At the worst, opinions don't change and each of you are only more staunch in your belief, which is no bad thing.About The Starting Line PodcastFrom a turbulent childhood marred by domestic violence, addiction and crime to being named the #1 most influential PR person, my journey has been anything but conventional. At 17, I dropped out of school. London is about to have the world's largest pollution charging area, as the capital's outer suburbs are added to the inner city Ultra Low Emission Zone - ULEZ. Drivers of vehicles that don't meet emissions standards will be charged £12.50 a day – with motorists facing the threat of a £180 fine if they don't comply. ULEZ expansion was widely regarded as a key factor in the Conservatives holding onto Boris Johnson's old Uxbridge seat in a recent by election; and unlike in other English cities the government is refusing to fund a scrappage scheme for non compliant cars. That's led to claims by London Mayor Sadiq Khan that they are weaponising air pollution.Adrian Goldberg hears from mum of two Parisa Wright from Bromley, the founder of the charity Greener and Cleaner; and Oli Lord, Head of Strategy at Clean Cities Campaign UK.Produced in Birmingham by Adrian Goldberg and Harvey White. The Marcus Lipton Youth Club is the last dedicated youth center still standing in its pocket of south London. But it is teetering. Nearly half of London's youth centers have closed in the past decade as Britain has cut money for youth services, as well as for welfare, schools and drug and alcohol treatment, according to the most recent available data. Marcus Lipton used to count on hundreds of thousands of pounds a year in government funding. Now, it gets nearly zero. “Just look around you,” said Ira Campbell, 55, the manager of the club, which offers counseling, warm meals and sports for young people. “This place is a safe haven.” Marcus Lipton lies in the shadow of the Loughborough Estate public housing project, where two of the Conservative government's longtime priorities — fighting crime and trying to reduce the budget deficit — collide. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is building new prisons and recruiting more police officers as part of his party's pledge to be tough on crime. He has also proposed a budget that would make deep spending reductions in the coming years, forcing officials to find savings in programs that have already been whittled to the bone during a decade of austerity. Budget cuts during that decade, instituted in response to the global financial crisis of 2008, hit the poorest neighborhoods of Britain's capital particularly hard, according to the Institute for Government, an independent research group in London. Those neighborhoods are also where serious youth violence, like homicide, has risen or remained disproportionately high after austerity, data from the office of London Mayor Sadiq Khan shows. Annual knife violence involving teenage victims in the city increased by nearly 40% to 5,332 in 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic began, from 3,809 in 2012, according to police figures obtained by The New York Times. (There was later a dip in serious youth violence during virus-related lockdowns, most likely because of reduced social contact.) Residents of the Loughborough Estate, already frustrated by sharply rising utility bills and food costs, say that the government would rather pay to lock up young people than spend money on projects that might provide them with positive activities or help their parents to make ends meet. Source article: https://udn.com/news/story/6904/6978804 Powered by Firstory Hosting
