In a dimly lit underground club, the audience gathered, a congregation of the techno-faithful. The night was young, but the atmosphere was charged with a palpable sense of anticipation. The curtain of reality was about to be drawn back, revealing glimpses of the sublime and the chaotic. As the stage lights flickered to life, Skinny Puppy took their positions. It was a peculiar, chilly autumn evening when the temperature outside seemed to mirror the eerie chill that permeated the venue. “Spahn Dirge (Live)” began its haunting journey, a sonic invocation that pulled the crowd into a trance. Images of distorted realities flashed across screens, intertwining with the hypnotic soundscape. It was as if the audience had stepped through a tear in the fabric of the universe, a glimpse into a surreal and phantasmagorical realm. The live performance was not merely a concert but a communion with the otherworldly. Meanwhile, outside in the drizzle-laden night, a solitary pilgrim embarked on a personal odyssey. With headphones clamped firmly in place, they ventured forth, their every step synchronized with the mournful strains of God's “Lord, I'm On My Way.” The lyrics became a mantra of longing and existential uncertainty, the perfect accompaniment to their solitary voyage. In a world consumed by noise and chaos, two friends sought solace in the simplicity of nature. Their canoe sliced through the tranquil waters of a remote river, and Andy Hawkins and Bill Laswell's “Headwaters” played softly on a portable speaker. The music harmonized with the rustle of leaves and the gentle gurgle of the river, forging a profound connection between man and the natural world. Back within the subterranean club, Echthros unfurled “Iyov” upon the eager assembly. The song was a tempest of aggression and discord, a sonic maelstrom that mirrored modern existence's chaotic pulse. It became a cathartic release, a collective purging of pent-up frustrations and societal dissonance. In the solitude of his studio, Justin Broadrick embarked on a sonic experiment. “Guitar Two” emerged as a mesmerizing composition, distorted guitar sounds woven together in a hypnotic haze. It was a journey into the depths of sound, an exploration of the boundaries of creativity and expression. These diverse musical vignettes, seemingly disjointed in their tonalities and emotional cadence, converge without incongruity. Today's mix is an expedition through the corridors of introspection and catharsis. See you next week. Skinny Puppy “Spahn Dirge (Live)” God “Lord I'm On My Way” Andy Hawkins & Bill Laswell “Headwaters” Echthros “Iyov” Justin Broadrick “Guitar Two” --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/soundwavemix/message

Today's guest deejay is Aidan Baker. I came across Aidan on one of my deep dives on Bandcamp and was struck by his music. Aidan, a Canadian musician currently residing in the creative hub of Berlin, has an impressive repertoire that spans solo work and collaborations with notable groups like Nadja, Hypnodrone Ensemble, and WERL Baker's musical ingenuity is particularly evident in his experimental guitar playing style, which draws inspiration from a diverse range of artists, including Caspar Brötzmann, James Plotkin, Steve Albini, and Justin Broadrick. It's a pleasure to have him curate this episode's mix, a captivating compilation that showcases his unique musical sensibilities. Want to hear more beautiful music? Just last week, Aidan released his new album, Tense Surfaces. I've been listing to it while I write today's show notes while an ocean breeze wafts its way through my windows. Every Album Ever with Mike Mansour & Alex Volz

This week we're discussing every album by GOD. Led by Kevin Richard Martin and Justin Broadrick (of Godflesh and Napalm Death), GOD is a tough band to describe and an even harder one to Google. Heavy, punishing, groovy, noisy, and more brutal than anything you've heard. Even John Zorn played with them on one album. They're really incredible, so please seek out their albums as best you can.Closing track: “Bloodstream” from The Anatomy of Addiction (1994)Spotify episode playlisthttps://open.spotify.com/user/motherpuncherincPatreonhttps://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverMerchhttps://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/Mike's EP:Pander Monkey on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple,Instagram:Mike @pandermonkeyAlex @everyalbumalexHistory Tom's stuff:Debut album on Bandcamp, Spotify, AppleSubstackInstagramTwitterFacebookMike's Picks:The Anatomy of Addiction (1994) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteBreach Birth EP (1990) — Worst Record, Least FavoriteAlex's Picks:Possession (1992) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteBreach Birth EP (1990) — Worst Record, Least Favorite Albums we discussed this episode…Breach Birth EP (1990)Possession (1992)The Anatomy of Addiction (1994)

The card has been drawn by a single hand. The hand of one Nick Bain aka The Magician Reversed. Pulling across the board from goth and doom to the occult and the influence of tarot, Nick juggles it all as the sole force behind this musical endeavor. With his debut album, And Deeper Still, out earlier this year, Nick delves into the metaphysical nature of his music and what it all means, showing praise for Justin Broadrick, Esoteric, and Portal, as well as getting banned from Napster for downloading Metallica, broadening his horizons with album review submissions, the oh so controversial backing tracks, reckoning with his cover band days (and the song he hated to play), and the trickiness of funeral doom. Today's guest deejay is Justin Broadrick. Justin is a singer and songwriter best known as a founding member of the band Godflesh, which combined metal and industrial music. Justin is also know for Jesu, which some refer to as his “shoegaze” project. While those are some of Justin's more well-known projects, he's been involved with many projects over nearly four decades, including everything from remixes to ambient music. Every episode of Soundwave features spectacular mixes from our amazing guest deejays. Today's show is no less unique. But today's show a special to me because my I have an intimate relationship with his music. I discover Justin through Godflesh's Streetcleaner album. I can tell you that the album fused metal and industrial music. I can tell you that while the album is bleak as hell, it is somehow psychedelic and cathartic. But you owe it to yourself to experience it. Loudly. When I learned that Godflesh would be performing in Boston for their first US tour, I interviewed Justin and his partner, G. C. Green, for WMFO. Unfortunately, their drum machine was fried from the US's electrical current despite the adaptor they used to protect. Justin has to go out on a Sunday morning and purchase a new drum machine. I never got the chance to interview Justin because he had to program beats into his new drum machine as quickly as possible. Instead, I smoked joints and played video games with their road crew in their tour bus. Justin eventually programmed his drum machine and delivered a pulverizing show. I believe they opened with “Love is A Dog from Hell.” A personal favorite of mine. My other story is about Justin's collaboration with Kevin Martin called Techno Animal. I was in a relationship with a woman that was crumbling. One night she didn't come home and was sleeping with another man. The only thing that got e through that long and painful night was listening to Peter Gabriel's Passion soundtrack and Techno Animal's Ghosts album repeatedly. When I launched Soundwave to cope with the stress and isolation of the early days of the pandemic, Justin was the first person I reached out to be a guest deejay on the show. It was a shot in the dark. I didn't expect a response, but Justin replied to my invitation the next day and said he'd be play to share a mix. So here we are today with a mix of some ambient music that Justin considers essential listening. I encourage you to listen to anything that Justin has been involved in. You might consider beginning with Justin's latest release, EXPECT NOTHING AND THE KINGDOM WILL BE YOURS, which he records under his ambient project monicker, FINAL. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/soundwavemix/message

Today's guest deejay is Monty Adkins, AKA Skrika. I discovered Monty when the Cryo Chamber label sent out an email announcing the release of Monty's new album, Fifth Nature. Whenever Cryo Chamber drops an album I drop whatever I'm doing and listen to it because they never fail to deliver mind blowing. Fifth Nature was no exception. The “liner notes” explains that Fifth Nature is the first of a series of albums set in the far distant future on a dying Earth. I appreciate concept albums that created their own mythology, but you certainly need to be aware of the backstory of Fifth Nature. The album stands on its own and you will lose yourself in its richly textures of a soundtrack for a distant apocalypse. Enjoy! Monty's mix draws upon the roster of artists on Cryo Chamber. Think of it as a compilation album as distilled by Monty. His mix captures the spirit of the label as well as reflecting Monty's own tastes. You're going to love today's mix. I encourage you listen to other artists from Cryo Chamber hat appear in Monty's mix such as Dronny Darko and Tineidae who have guest deejayed on Soundwave Join us next week for our 100th episode when our guest deejay will be Justin Broadrick. Support Burning Ambulance on Patreon Get the Burning Ambulance email newsletter Episode 57 of the Burning Ambulance podcast features an interview with producer Kevin Richard Martin. I’ve been a fan of Martin’s for almost 30 years. The first thing I heard by him was 1992's Possession, by his band God, which also featured Godflesh's Justin Broadrick on guitar; they were an extremely heavy sort of postpunk free jazz group with elements of doom metal and dub — they sounded like nothing else out there at the time, and really nothing since. They released two studio albums and several live records, all of which are out of print and hard to find these days. After that, Martin and Broadrick made a bunch of records under a bunch of different names, as Techno Animal and Ice and Curse of the Golden Vampire and a few others. The music ranged from extremely spaced-out instrumentals, like psychedelic dream soundtracks, to ultra-heavy stuff that was inspired by hip-hop but with incredible, booming, almost concussive bass. Martin is obsessed with bass, as you’ll hear in our conversation, and he’s spent most of his recording career working on ways to make the bass heavier and more immersive. In the late '90s, he started doing solo work as The Bug; instrumental at first, but he very quickly started bringing in vocalists and making really harsh, almost industrial dancehall and hip-hop. The three best known Bug albums — Pressure, London Zoo, and Angels and Devils — are heavy as hell, and he's earned a reputation for ultra-crushing live shows, with so much volume and bass that it'll make your nose bleed. His most recent music is completely different from any of this, which is part of the reason he’s releasing it under his own name, Kevin Richard Martin. He started out with the album Sirens in 2019, which was very atmospheric but also very intense instrumental music that dealt with the difficulties involved in the birth of his first child. Now this year, he’s put out five digital-only albums on Bandcamp called Frequencies For Leaving Earth volumes 1 through 5, and each one is different from the others, but they’re all connected in that they’re all experimenting with a kind of immersive use of sound and bass. I listen to them on headphones, and it’s kind of like having your head wrapped in a towel and very slowly squeezed. In this interview, we talk a lot about those records, as well as God and Techno Animal and Zonal and a whole range of stuff. I think you’ll find it to be a very interesting conversation.
