We also discuss Andrea Robbin Skinner's recent revelation about her mother, Alice Munro, and how it has impacted us as readers. Some other highlights: In #CurrentlyReading, we are each reading another chunkster for Sue Jackson's #BigBookSummer: Emily is cooling off with THE SNOW CHILD by Eowyn Ivey, and Chris is going back in time with MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS by Antonia Fraser. We have a spoiler-free conversation about FELLOWSHIP POINT by Alice Elliot Dark which we both enjoyed. Short stories read since the last episode: “Janus” by Ann Beattie and “In the Gloaming” by Alice Elliott Dark both from the collection THE BEST AMERICAN SHORT STORIES OF THE CENTURY edited by John Updike and Katrina Kenison. “A Blind Man Can See How Much I Love You” by Amy Bloom from the collection A BLIND MAN COULD SEE HOW MUCH I LOVE YOU: STORIES. “Uncle Valentine” by Willa Cather in UNCLE VALENTINE AND OTHER STORIES, edited by Bernice Slote “The Birds” by Daphne du Maurier from the collection THE BIRDS AND OTHER STORIES [This collection was first published in the UK in 1952 with the title, THE APPLE TREE: A SHORT NOVEL AND SEVERAL LONG STORIES] In Biblio Adventures, we recap the great day we had on Long Island, NY We took a ferry from New London, CT, to Orient Point, NY, then drove south to the Barnes and Noble in Bridgehampton to check out their new store layout. Then we headed north to Sag Harbor, where we were delighted by a John Steinbeck and Charley sculpture (“Assistant Editor” by Seward Johnson) and explored Sag Harbor Books. Other stops included Black Cat Books on Shelter Island and the Floyd Memorial Library in Greenport. Check out our vlog of the day on our YouTube channel Emily had a Couch Biblio Adventure, thanks to our listener Kathy who told us about a conversation with Percival Everett, Cord Jefferson, and Jelani Cobb via City Arts & Lectures Chris watched LETTERS TO JULIET, a rom-com inspired by the book of the same name by Eve Friedman and Ceil Jann Friedman. [26:57] Yoga is something in the past this podcast host (Greg Gazin) would have never considered. The way it's portrayed, it conjures up images of slim fit women who contort themselves into pretzels. But now I truly think different. I realize that Yoga is really for everybody. In fact I now practice it weekly and it's been transformational in terms of my well being. In today's episode we speak with Sharon McMullan-Baron, a yoga instructor but also a cancer survivor who I met through Wellspring Alberta.   Sharon's motto is: Remember to Live Simply, Speak Kindly, Care Deeply and Love Generously - and in this light-hearted episode, Sharon generously shares a little about her inspiring journey, how she discovered Yoga, what it has done for her and what it can do for you so you can take leadership of your mind, body and soul - regardless of age, gender or physical condition. Sharon dispels some of the myths about Yoga - how easy it is for anyone to do and how it's more than just a series of body movements. We learn about Wellspring - a no-cost, donor-funded, registered charity, community-based non-medical centre of support for cancer. Wellspring Alberta in Edmonton is where Sharon delivers her classes and has been instrumental in bringing her Yoga Thrive for cancer patients program to help them and their caregivers through challenging times. You'll also hear about how you can get started practising Yoga. Sharon shares resources - books, videos, names of people she admires in the Yoga world so you can check them out. . We also get a little hands-on Yoga practise you can do in real time while you are listening to the episode.   Resources mentioned: Wellspring Alberta and Wellspring (National) Book: Meditations from the Mat - Daily reflections on the Path of Yoga - Rolf gates and Katrina Kenison. Companion book : Meditations on Intention and Being - daily reflections on the path of Yoga, Mindfulness and Compassion by Rolf Gates Yoga teachers: Peggy Cappy - PBS programs for USA listeners, videos and books Susi Hately - Co-creator of Yoga Thrive - the hatha and restorative yoga program for those touched by cancer. Her website Functional Synergy has many resources. Yoga sutras by Patanjali. About Sharon Sharon McMullan-Baron has been teaching Yoga since 2009 focussing in the areas of Restorative Yoga and Hatha Yoga. Her certifications include Hatha Yoga, Yoga for the Low Back, Yoga Thrive for Cancer Patients, Healthy Breast, Tru North (a prostate cancer programme) Relax and Renew and more.  A cancer survivor herself, diagnosed in 2006, Sharon was instrumental in bringing, Yoga Thrive for cancer patients to the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton in 2010 and to Wellspring Edmonton when it opened its doors  Sharon strives to keep a balanced approach to every day.  When she's not on her mat, her survivorship includes a dedication to family and friends, extensive volunteer work, athletic, artistic and creative pursuits which may include wordsmithing poems and stories or playing with fabrics, creating quilts and other textile treasures. You can catch her on the bicycle or XC  ski trails, or out with her dog, if you can! Sharon lives in Edmonton, Alberta Canada and can be reached via email or via LinkedIn.

In this rendition of The Way Out we've got an incredibly inspiring and relatable interview with person in long term recovery, and the one and only Sober Yoga Girl, Alex McRobert AKA Alex McRobs for those of you who are social media inclined. Alex, a self-proclaimed and quintessential party girl since high school, shares her journey to and through sobriety to this point, which included addressing her mental health in addition to her true reckoning with her relationship alcohol, which over time turned from relatively harmless and consequence free partying to a progressive and indeed destructive force in her life. The instrumental move for Alex was joining one year no beer, a community of people who were actively working on eliminating alcohol from their lives. This is where the magic happened, where Alex began to hear the recovery and sobriety journeys of those who have gone down the path before her and of those who were starting that journey alongside her. What started out as a 28-day sobriety goal, turned into 90 days, which has now spanned more than two years and counting. Finding her true purpose, which is operating her Mindful Life Practice and Sober Curious Yoga School, sprang from her decision to share her recovery journey publicly, which prompted folks to reach out to Alex to help them on their own quest to sobriety and recovery, thus integrating Yoga and Recovery coaching into a blended model that brings her students on a path to recovery and wellness. Without question, Alex's decision to get sober and then share her journey to sobriety openly has not only transformed her own life, but the lives of a growing number of people she's been able to reach as a result, so listen up as Alex McRobs Recovers Out Loud with us, right now. Ann Patchett on her selection: I picked this story when I was the editor of Best American Short Stories in 2006. Katrina Kenison, who was the series editor, was a huge Edith Pearlman fan and gave me a lot of choices. The hardest part was choosing just one. When the book came out we picked three stories to read at the launch party and hired three actors, but the day before the woman who was supposed to read "Self-Reliance" had to cancel. It was my big break. I sat in my hotel room in Boston and read the story twenty times. I have never enjoyed a reading so much. Because of that I became very bonded to Edith and her work. I wrote an introduction to her new and selected stories Binocular Vision and promoted it hugely. The book went on to win the National Book Critics Circle Award. I don't think anything in my life has ever made me so happy.

Katrina is a mother of two young men and has been writing about motherhood for over 20 years. I especially love that Katrina is authentic, honest, vulnerable, and shares her real life in such a beautiful way. Her words have the power to make you feel as if you're living her life right beside her. In this episode, we specifically talk with Katrina about her experiences writing about her life as a mother (and what her family really thinks about it), She shares her tips for writing a memoir of your own, how the ordinary moments are truly the greatest gifts, her self-care practices and how to choose love over fear.   To learn more about Katrina and her books, visit www.katrinakenison.com.  SUMMARY In her memoir, The Gift of an Ordinary Day, Katrina Kenison becomes a voice for all women who begin motherhood blowing bubbles and tickling tiny toes but are all-too-soon pulled into the tumultuous years of teenage angst. Looking back, Kenison is surprised to find her most precious memories are “the ones no one ever thought to photograph.” Fortunately, she had the good sense to slow down enough to relish "the gift of an ordinary day.” Then, while transitioning from mothering teens and emptying her nest, Kenison simultaneously experiences physical upheaval as well. For three years, her family lives in a state of “constant impermanence” as they leave one house, tear down another, and build a new one. In this “Mother’s Memoir,” Kenison gives us a front-row seat to her intense, maternal emotions while “stumbling through the intricate dance of holding on and letting go.” KEY MENTORS Olive Ann Burns: after being newly diagnosed with cancer, this author of Cold Sassy Tree teaches Kenison how to live in the moment Krishna Das: leads the only retreat Kenison ever attends; in spite of traveling 300 days/year, he proclaims he is “always home” Kenison’s parents: offer to let Kenison and her family live with them for three years during their home construction; help her “pick her battles” while raising teenagers QUOTES FROM KENISON “The idea of an ordinary day as a gift was profoundly powerful to me, and it didn’t change the way I parented in any way my sons would particularly notice, but it changed everything for me because I didn’t want to miss a single minute. I didn’t want to find myself looking back someday with regret because I’d been too busy racing through my life when I could have been enjoying it and savoring it.” “My job [as a mother] was to make sure that my family was always ‘home.’ So, when we were feeling a little uprooted and at loose ends, I realized ‘home’ was something we could create wherever we were.” “[To bring love into our home], I did a lot of work on myself, my own 'soul aerobics.'" “We have so much practice with “lasts,’ and they begin in infancy…so by the time we send them off to college, we’ve had a lot of experiences with ‘lasts,’ and yet that is such a huge transition.” “It’s about process, not product….The more we can let go of attachment to outcomes, the happier we are.” BUY The Gift of an Ordinary Day Publisher: Grand Central Publishing; Reprint edition RECOMMENDATIONS BUY Mitten Strings for God: Reflections for Mothers in a Hurry BUY Magical Journey: An Apprenticeship in Contentment BUY Moments of Seeing - Reflections from an Ordinary Life BUY Simplicity Parenting: Using the Extraordinary Power of Less to Raise Calmer, Happier, and More Secure Kids Watch Kenison read a chapter from her book, "The Gift of an Ordinary Day."
