How do you eat a vegan keto diet and will it prevent the top chronic diseases from happening? Hi Jimmy, Will and Carrie, Thank you for this special vegan keto episode. My husband and I have adopted a traditional ketogenic approach and have seen improvements in our body composition. I have noticed greatly improved energy, mental performance, and psychological health. In fact, last night I played two hours of volleyball and had more energy than the much younger fitness coach on my team! My mom is 67 years old, semi-retired, and is struggling with unplanned weight gain, muscle loss, low energy, a weak immune system, slow healing, brain fog, moodiness, and mental function issues that seem to be linked to elevated blood sugar levels. We've been talking about keto for about a year, but she is afraid to try it because she is a vegetarian (that includes no dairy except butter, but she will eat eggs). She thinks there won't be anything left for her to eat if she cuts carbs. She has been eating high-carb, low-fat, and low protein. To her, a can of black beans is enough protein for one day and a teaspoon or two butter is plenty of fat. She has been trying to get omega-3 fats from flaxseed and canola oil. She is excited about hearing what you have to share on this podcast and wants to know the answers to the following questions. - How do you prepare quick and easy vegan keto recipes? - How do you prevent hunger while eating vegan keto? - Where do you get your fat intake from on vegan keto? - What omega-3 sources of fat are there to consume? - How much protein is appropriate on a vegan keto diet and how do you get it? Tofu? - Will supplements be necessary to get all the vitamins in my vegan keto diet? - Dementia, heart disease, and cancer prevention are my goals with going vegan keto? Will this diet help me reach these goals? Thank you so much for your help answering these questions for my mom! Vanessa “In the next four or five years this is what everybody is going to be talking about. Educate yourself now so that you can make an informed decision about your health.” – Jimmy Moore 2. What are your thoughts on protein combining, getting complete proteins, and incorporating pea protein to get a better amino acid profile on a vegan keto approach? Hi guys, I’m a vegan keto dieter and would love to hear Dr. Carrie’s views on essential amino acids eating this way. Protein combining is a contentious issue in the vegan world and I’ve found through my own research tracking my macronutrients that vegan keto IS limited by lysine and to some extent methionine as we mostly cut out the legumes. I’d love to hear her views on the subject of protein combining, how to get complete proteins on a vegan keto diet, and incorporating things like pea protein to help achieve a full amino acid profile for people who can’t or don’t consume soy. As a practicing physician, I’d love to have the answers to the following questions regarding a vegan keto nutritional approach: - What fats do you eat? - What carbs do you permit? - Are there any whole grains? - Any beans? - Any fasting involved? - Supplements you take? - Do you monitor ketosis? How? - What exercise do you recommend when doing vegan keto? - How many days a month do you recommend eating vegan keto? Or is it constant? - Do you ever go off vegan keto and return to a plant-based lower-fat diet to cycle out of ketosis? - Are there any concerns about osteoporosis from acidosis? How do you prevent nutrient deficiencies on a vegan keto diet? What impact would incorporating an occasional vegan keto day into my regular ketogenic diet? Hi Jimmy, Dr. Cole, and Dr. Diulus, How does someone eating a vegan keto diet get their Vitamin B12? I thought Vitamin B12 could only be found in animal-based foods. And what about other nutrients that only come from animals such as dietary cholesterol? If a vegan keto diet is a sustainable way of fueling the human body over the long-term, then does that mean you HAVE to take supplements in order to remain healthy? I’m sure your body can “get by” for a while, but at what cost later on...I’m very interested in what impact implementing vegan keto days into my regular ketogenic diet. Why do some people find it difficult to lose weight on a vegan keto diet as compared with a meat-based ketogenic nutrition plan? Hey guys, I'm on a vegan keto group on Facebook and I often read about people gaining weight instead of losing it while eating that way. Why does it seem more difficult for some people to lose weight while eating vegan keto than meat-eating keto dieters? Is there something in the animal-based foods that contributes to easier weight loss success that is lacking in a vegan keto diet? Thanks for helping me understand this better. Is it an issue that I only have one well-formed and easy-to-pass bowel movement every other day since shifting my diet to keto? Hey Jimmy and Will, Thanks so much for talking so openly about poop! When you said that all we need is two snakes a day, all I could think of was no way! After shifting my diet to keto, I noticed the amount of food I was consuming decreased with more nutrient dense foods satisfying me. My theory is my body was actually able to use most of the food I was consuming without much waste which explains why my bowel movements went down. I simply generate less waste now, right? My estimation is that I average a poop every other day but it is well formed and passes easily so it doesn’t appear I am constipated. Should I be worried that it is so infrequent and what should I alter in my diet if my bowel habits sound problematic? Why have I been experiencing regular bouts of loose stools since I’ve shifted my diet over to a ketogenic approach? Hi Jimmy and Dr. Cole, I've been listening to your podcast since I began keto in June. Thank you for all the great information. In August, I began struggling with regular bouts of diarrhea on a daily basis. I can't remember the last solid stool that I had. I no longer track my macros since I'm at my goal weight. I typically have a Bulletproof coffee with MCT oil powder and butter in the morning and eat leftovers for lunch, an afternoon snack of a cheese stick or almond butter, and then dinner with meat and veggies. I've been playing around with my carbs, including adding back in healthy carbs like sweet potato and checking my blood ketones to confirm I'm always in ketosis. I drink lots of water and I'm good about getting in my electrolytes. I've even cut back on magnesium to see if that would help. It has not. My stomach isn't upset and overall I feel a lot better than I did before keto. Any clues on what I can do to decrease the diarrhea? Thank you for your help! What is causing my poop to be watery and yellow when I’m eating keto and extended fasting? Hello Jimmy and Dr. Cole, I’ve been eating keto with intermittent fasting since mid-April and have been slowly healing my gut from a lot of issues I was experiencing. But here is the issue: my poop is watery and yellowish in color (my liver levels were tested and it came back as optimal on the lab results). I especially see this yellowish loose stool when I fast for longer than 16 hours. My MCT oil consumption is 1 Tbs in my coffee and I did that without issues at the beginning of keto. It kicked in at the three- month mark. My food intake hasn’t changed much since going keto, but I have noticed that when I eat off plan even a little I get the runs hard and furious. One other issue that might be connected to this is I’m dealing with hair loss from thyroid issues as well as high estrogen levels. Can you help me figure this out? Thanks so much for your podcast! God bless you guys. Cecilia 5. What can I do to improve my Type 2 on the Bristol Stool chart to the more healthier Type 3 and 4? Hi Jimmy and Will, Thank you for all you do for the keto community. In the episode where you discussed the Bristol Stool chart, you commented that any good Bristol chart would include tips to fix each type of poop. I can’t find this information, so please post this in the show notes section of your Poopcast. I seem to constantly have Type 2 poop where it is sausage-shaped and lumpy and I’ve tried various tips to getting it back to normal, including adding salt, magnesium, extra water, and upping my fiber. But nothing seems to help other than doing an extended fast. Any other tips you can give me to help improve this to the more healthy stool? Thanks for your help, Stephanie 6. Is there anything wrong with never feeling constipated? And would only pooping once a week be a problem? Hello you guys, If you never feel constipated, is this something to worry about? Why have my bowels come to a screeching halt since I switched over to a ketogenic diet? What can I do to get my bowel moving again? Hi Jimmy and The Poopmaster, I have been doing keto for about a month and ever since I started eating this way it’s like my bowels have come to a screeching halt. I consume 50-60g total carbs with around 30 grams of fiber. I drink close to a gallon of water a day and supplement with magnesium and probiotics. Is this an issue I need to be concerned about? Any ideas on how to make my bowels start back up again? Thanks, Dayna Leave us a review at Apple Podcasts! Hi Jimmy and Dr. Cole, I’m a recent Keto Talk listener who appreciates your expert analysis on the ketogenic lifestyle. I am new to trying keto and admittedly have been failing at sticking with it lately due to added stress from my job. I’m hoping your podcast will motivate me so I can finally fight through these challenges and become a happy, keto-adapted person. My question for you guys is about catching the common cold. Over the past year, I have had three colds which included an acute upper respiratory infection during the winter that then turned into a sinus infection which took two months to recover from. I have always had a sensitivity to dairy and have noticed a distinct correlation between dairy consumption and my lowered immunity to colds as well as other gastrointestinal symptoms. Doctors usually just dismiss my claims and usually just give me medications for dealing with my symptoms. So with all this background in mind, will a low-carb, high-fat, keto approach help me counteract my weak immunity and tolerate dairy again? I’m so tired of the runny noses. Thanks for your help! –STUDY: Low-Carbohydrate Diet Superior to Antipsychotic Medications 1. Will the steroid I have to take for my Polymyalgia Rheumatica make me store the fat I’m consuming on my ketogenic diet? Should I do extended fasts to deal with this? Hey Jimmy and Will, I’ve been doing well on less than 20g carbs/day consumed in a single midday meal and working out vigorously with treadmill at an incline and six-mile bike rides. All was going well and I never felt the need to test for ketones. Unfortunately, I was suddenly diagnosed with a horrible inflammatory disorder called Polymyalgia Rheumatica and the only treatment for it is the steroid prednisone which causes an insulin response that can eventually lead to Type 2 diabetes. Sadly, I have to take this steroid for the time being and I’m concerned pairing it with my low-carb, high fat diet will lead to massive weight gain in the belly due to the extra fat since my body will have a more difficult time breaking down fat stores. I’ve only been on the prednisone for a few days, but I’m trying to deal with this now before it becomes a problem. Do you have any ideas about whether my concerns are justified or not? Should I try doing longer than 24 hour fasts to help? Looking forward to your guidance. Hey guys, I recently started the ketogenic diet and I am doing well so far. I don’t think I’m fat-adapted yet but I know it will come. My question for you guys is about dental health. I have always had to have my teeth thoroughly and professionally cleaned every three months to deal with excessive plaque formation. I am wondering if eating keto will enable me to see a reduction in plaque formation on my teeth. Thanks in advance. Susan 3. Are there any concerns about someone in an advanced age starting a ketogenic diet for health? Hi Jimmy and Dr. Cole, I recently spent two weeks with my mom who is a stubborn 76 year old Type 2 diabetic and she is determined to eat sweets now and then because she just “has to have them.” Sadly, she covers these sugary dalliances with insulin. She’s lost 15 pounds this year from simply cutting calories, but she’s still eating things like Saltines every single night. While her A1c has gone down, it’s still at 8.0. I made her listen to the Keto Clarity audiobook on a long car ride and we got through the first 10 chapters with her hanging on every word. Thanks to your book, Jimmy, she wanted to try to make a change in her diet for the first time ever. It is VERY unusual for her to be interested in anything new, so needless to say I was excited. My question for you guys is about her advanced age. Does she need to be more careful than a younger person incorporating a low-carb, high-fat, ketogenic approach into her healthy lifestyle? I would hate to be the person who is recommending all of these improvements for her only to learn that it may negatively impact her health. She sees her doctor regularly, but I don’t know whether he is familiar with the keto way of eating for health improvements. She is also on blood pressure medication and a statin for high cholesterol! Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom about someone in their late 70s who may JUST BE STARTING down this path! Hi Jimmy and Will, I have been seeing a kinesiologist who supports eating keto. But he told me I needed to stay away from consuming frozen vegetables since he learned many years ago that they include a sugar water bath to preserve their color and taste. He said it’s not required to be listed in the ingredients and wasn’t sure if this practice was still going on. Is this something I need to be concerned about that could sabotage my ketogenic diet? I’ve been doing keto since July and I noticed I constantly experienced diarrhea and severe anxiety. I chalked these symptoms up to symptoms of the “keto flu” but it’s persisting even to this day. The only solution to these issues was to add back in carbs in the form of about 50g of sweet potato around my six workouts a week as a fitness competitor. Within two days of doing this, my diarrhea submitted and within a week my anxiety symptoms disappeared. Also, my hair was falling out during my time eating keto and has continued to fall out since I stopped. I loved the focus and appetite suppression that this way of eating gave me, but I can’t handle the anxiety, diarrhea, and hair loss. Do you have any idea why I’m experiencing these things while eating a ketogenic diet? When I’ve checked online, I’ve noticed other people have experienced these things too. Is a ketogenic diet an appropriate nutritional approach for someone with hepatitis B? Hi Jimmy and Dr. Cole, I have been listening to your podcast for three months and am excited to learn about all the great benefits of a ketogenic diet. I read a book from a doctor in Japan that suggests that people with chronic liver dysfunction should avoid a ketogenic diet because of the high-fat content. I have hepatitis B and have been taking enticavir to control the disease for the past four years. My interest in going keto is to help prevent Alzheimer’s disease which runs in my family. My question for you guys is this: Is a ketogenic nutritional approach appropriate to do for someone with hepatitis B? Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated. Yin from Hong Kong 2. Why do I lose more weight when I add in carbohydrates to my ketogenic diet than if I adhered strictly to it? Hi Jimmy and Dr. Cole, I’ve been eating low-carb, high-fat and have noticed that when I eat more carbs such as sweet potatoes, wine, fruit, etc. that I actually lose MORE weight than when I strictly adhere to my keto plan. I don't measure my ketones and a scale and tape measure are all I own to track my progress. I don't count my carb intake, but I try to only eat carbs from dairy and vegetables on most days. So why is that when I eat extra carbs in my diet it leads to weight loss? I’m a 6’ tall female and have been fairly healthy my entire life. I workout 4-6 times a week doing running and body weight exercises. Is this something you’ve seen with others who add back in clean carbohydrates to their diet? Dear Jimmy and Dr. Cole, Thank you for Keto Talk as it has been an amazing source of information and guidance on my keto journey. I used to deal with several hypoglycemia when I ate high-carb, low-fat and I was hoping going ketogenic this year would help with this. While the hypoglycemic episodes have become less frequent, it’s still an issue for me and preventing me from enjoying the freedom from food bondage that seemingly everyone else is experiencing. This issue is so bad I can’t even intermittent fast as I can only go a few hours between meals without feeling the effects of the reactive hypoglycemia kick in. What’s amazing is I don’t usually feel hungry when this happens, but I do get dizzy, light-headed, nauseous, and irritable. In my research into this, I discovered the cause of the reactive hypoglycemia is low neurotransmitters (specifically GABA, dopamine, epinephrine and glutamate). I am working with a doctor to fix these underlying issues, but is there anything else I can do to my ketogenic approach to deal with the reactive hypoglycemia? I’m a 32-year old female who doesn’t use any sweeteners and dealing with low thyroid taking naturethroid and amenorrhea for the past two years. This has been a huge roadblock for me. Thanks for your help, Annie AND Hi Jimmy & Will, I love the show and all the functional medicine insights that Dr. Will brings...I never miss an episode! I've been doing low-carb (not keto) for about a year and have noticed I get woozy after eating my evening meals that makes me very tired, unable to concentrate, and feel like I have to lie down lest I fall. My doctor says it’s reactive hypoglycemia and I’ve tried eating sugar to deal with it when it happens and it helps for a while but isn’t the solution to eliminating it. My doctor says I should eat more protein and eat every three hours to prevent this. When I added in more protein it acted very similarly to the sugar not giving me full relief. The best solution I’ve found is when I go to sleep. As for eating every three hours, I’m just not hungry enough to do that. Any insights you guys can share about this? Thanks so much and keep up the good work with the podcast. Meryl KETO TALK MAILBOX – Why do I still crave ice cream at night after eating keto or following an extended fast? What can I do to deal with this specific craving? Hey Jimmy and Dr. Cole, I'm a big believer in both keto and fasting but I cannot stop craving ice cream after a 3+ day fast and a ketogenic meal. It only seems to happen at night and it takes me ages to get back into ketosis again after I give in to the temptation. I’ve tried everything to deal with this, including using exogenous ketones. But to no avail. I’ve already lost 42 pounds with extended fasting and a ketogenic diet and I feel trapped by these ice cream cravings. I lift heavy weights and do extensive cardio…could this hard exercise routine cause me to crave? Please help! Does eating a ketogenic diet lead to abdomen and back pain as a result of high acidic urine production? Why is this happening? Hello Jimmy and Dr. Will, Love your show! I have been experiencing a dull ache regularly in my mid to lower abdomen and back since I started keto over a year ago. Last week it started to get worse and I went to the ER to get some bloodwork, have x-rays taken, and CT scan (with contrast)—everything came back normal. The doctor’s best guess was that I have a stomach bug. This was based on deductive reasoning, which I did not buy. Today I researched this further and found this seems to be common with keto due to an acidic urine issue. Some of the remedies suggested include bicarbonate soda with Milk of Magnesia to ease the load on the kidneys. So my question for you guys is this: Do you see this in your ketogenic patients and how do you help them with it? Why is this happening? How do I manage the carbohydrate cravings that come with bipolar disease do I can reduce my carbohydrate intake to ketogenic levels? Hey guys, I have a question for you regarding bipolar. I have it and the predictable carb cravings that go along with the disease. The theory is bipolar people crave carbs to stabilize their mood. I am currently under medicating for my bipolar and I’d love to find a more natural way to deal with this. I just started keto and dropped my carbohydrate intake from 180g to 90g daily. What can I do to get my daily carbohydrate intake to below 50g without the intense cravings that I’m experiencing from my disease? Hi Jimmy and Dr. Will, I often hear people in the ketogenic community including you guys state to make sure you "eat enough calories.” But what does that mean? I'm a 50-year old women who engages in light exercise like walking, work a desk job and sit from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and I have NO idea how many calories to eat. Some say 1,200 while others say 2,000 which I think is pretty high. I'm so confused and frustrated because I still have at least 45 pounds to lose. While I'm not planning on counting calories, I'd like a general guideline as to what is right for me. Thanks for all your info. Lisa KETO TALK MAILBOX – What is the idea poop for someone eating keto? But my biggest problem is I’ve been having bouts of diverticulitis since making this dietary change forcing me to take Metamucil to raise my fiber intake. What impact on ketosis will there be with the complete removal of the thyroid? Hi Jimmy and Dr. Cole, I have been eating keto since May 2016 and I feel great! I regularly check my blood ketones and am usually in the 0.7-2.0 range. I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's in 2006 and have been on 100 mcg Synthroid ever since. My thyroid levels were all in range last June but my thyroid kept getting larger. During the summer, my doctor found a nodule that ended up showing Hurthle cells. This concerned my doctor who said it’s a cancer risk and he recommended a total thyroidectomy. My surgery is schedule for next week and I’m wondering what impact this will have on my pursuit of nutritional ketosis. Will this make it more difficult for me to stay in ketosis if I no longer have a thyroid? I just want to know what I’m getting myself into so I can respond accordingly after the surgery. What can I do to my keto approach to remedy this? Hey guys, I’m a big fan of Keto Talk and I’ve been eating this way for about a year with great results for the most part. But I noticed a couple of months after starting a ketogenic diet, my sex hormone binding globulin rose from 50 to 70 and my testosterone tanked. I’ve since run these tests several more times and they all confirm the same thing. From what I’ve read, this means my body’s ability to use any available testosterone has been hampered and many sites online blame a low-carb diet as the culprit. I need you to talk me off the ledge on this and help me figure out what is going on. Thanks, Zach 3. Does eating a low-carb, high-fat, ketogenic diet make the urine pH more acidic? If so, should I be worried about this at all? Dear Jimmy and Dr. Will, Yesterday, I went to see my General Practitioner to review my latest bloodwork. She knows I’ve been eating a ketogenic diet for the past nine months and was nothing but pleased with all my markers—except for one. My urine pH was 5.5 and she noted that indicates my body is a bit acidic. She said I shouldn’t worry about this since all the other numbers are perfectly fine, but she made the following statement that stopped me in my tracks: “I am not sure, but maybe it’s the ketones you are excreting that makes your urine more acidic.” What?! Is it true that being in ketosis makes your urine acidic? Should I be worried at all about this or is this of no concern at all. Thank you for your help! If they are healthy and between the ages of 18-54 and have not been declined or rated from a life insurance carrier before, this option is available. It could be a good fit for someone that thinks their blood levels may be "abnormal" from the insurance company perspective and want to avoid doing labs. How do you resolve them without supplementation? Hi, Jimmy and Dr. Cole, I love this podcast, been listening since Day 1. I’ve been eating low-carb for several years and about a year and a half ago I went full-on keto. I love this way of eating and have seen a lot of benefits from it. I regularly see average ketones of 1.7 mmol/L. However, there is one drawback I experience at least once a week and upwards of four times a week. It’s the dreaded leg cramps. They are more common at night, often when I’m sleeping, but I’ve experienced them pretty much anytime throughout the day. I believe the ketogenic lifestyle truly is the ideal way to eat, but I shouldn’t be having this major and often quite painful side effect, right? I’ve heard you discuss the issue of muscle cramps in the past and how they’re typically due to dehydration and/or electrolyte depletion or imbalance. The quandary I now have is how can I really consider this ketogenic diet to be “ideal” if it leaves me with this leg cramp issue that I seemingly have to solve with supplementation. Obviously, if this way of eating was being implemented by our ancestors and it was causing them this problem, they wouldn’t have been able to solve it with supplements. I don’t have any major health issues and am not metabolically broken. But this nagging problem with my ketogenic diet makes me wonder how it can truly be the perfect way to eat? Any ideas why my electrolytes may be out-of-whack and leading to leg cramps? Or could the cramps possibly be due to something else I’m not aware of? I appreciate your help. Keep up the good work! Brian – STUDY: Red meat halves risk of depression 1. Why am I experiencing a sudden dip in my energy levels while eating ketogenic when energy has been great? Dear Jimmy and Will, I’ve been following the ketogenic diet for nearly a year at the age of 75 and have experienced great energy eating grass-fed meats, fresh farm eggs, and organic vegetables. But over the past month I’ve noticed my energy has taken a dive and I thought it might be the heat of the summer. But my blood pressure also dropped so low (70/42) that I had a tough time just standing up. My doctor had me wear a heart halter and discovered I have tachycardia. Of course, now I have to see a cardiologist and I’m sure he’s gonna flip out about my numbers eating keto: Total cholesterol 294, LDL-C 198, HDL-C 85, triglycerides 55, LDL-P 2100, small LDL-P 386, VLDL 11, fasting blood glucose 90, Vitamin D 97.0, C-Reactive Protein 1.1 Do you have any suggestions for me? Brenda 2. Is there concern about a low Vitamin C intake while eating a restricted ketogenic diet like the one outlined in The Plant Paradox? Hi, Jimmy and Dr. Cole, A friend of mine read the book The Plant Paradox by Dr. Steven Gundry and is following his dietary advice. After reviewing their recommendations (essentially no legumes, no grains, low/no fruit, no vegetables that contain seeds on the inside like cucumbers, squash, etc) it seems that she would easily fall into the ketogenic diet recommendations. She recently met with her naturopath who was leery of keto because of a supposedly low vitamin C intake. Do you have any insight into this and how a ketogenic dieter would get Vitamin C? I usually follow a Paleo/keto diet but have never considered micronutrient deficiencies as a concern because I am eating so much plant matter. Thank you in advance! Alexandria 3. How do I avoid the onslaught of sugar and crappy carbage while I am in the hospital? Will they honor my request to keep the sugar and carbs out of my diet? Hey guys, What is a patient who eats keto supposed to do when they are in the hospital? I need to have aortic heart valve and stem replacement surgery someday and I worry about what this hospital stay will do to me. I’m a severely insulin resistant Type 2 diabetic who had an A1c of 10.4 prior to going on a ketogenic diet. Three months after going keto, that number dropped to 5.6. I’m keto for life now, but this hospital stay will be a challenge to avoid the crappy carbage they like to serve as well as the sugar-filled goop they put in the feeding tubes. I already know my healing won’t happen properly with high blood sugar and insulin levels and the hospital will simply medicate and inject me with insulin to deal with it. If I asked my hospital to avoid doing this, will they follow my wishes? I suppose I could just fast the entire time I am in the hospital, but do you have any suggestions about this? Thanks so much for helping me with this. Ethan KETO TALK MAILBOX – Does a ketogenic diet help or hurt with anxiety issues? Hey guys! I feel like I’ve had an increase in inflammation ever since I started on the keto diet in June 2017. I look more fat every day and I read that a high-fat diet increases endotoxins and increases gut permeability as well which leads to histamine production. But it’s the rise in one type of bacteria that produces an inflammation response that has me most concerned about a ketogenic diet. Should I be? Why or why not? Is there a way to remedy this? Hey Jimmy and Dr. Cole, Is there a keto-friendly remedy for diarrhea? I don't know if it's stress-related or bacterial, but I’ve had it for about a month which forced me to become carbolitic again! I’m eating rice, bread, oatmeal and as you can probably guess I'm hungry most of the time now. I throw in some fatty protein, too, but practically nothing green. Roughage seems to irritate my sensitive intestinal tract. But this diarrhea lasted for five weeks while eating keto and I was hoping it would just work itself out. As far as I know I’m not sick with a stomach bug or anything, but my tummy feels uncomfortable as the non-carby food is being digested. I’ve been popping probiotics like candy every single day, so I don’t know what could be going on. Please help. Why am I having constant hunger while eating a ketogenic diet with adequate calories and dietary fat? Hey guys, love your podcast! I'm an ER doc and 90% of what I see in the ER is 100 percent preventable through nutrition and other lifestyle modifications. My whole ER department is on the fasting bandwagon and many are LCHF! I’ve been eating this way for five years and incorporate regular periods of intermittent fasting of 16-20 daily. I even ran in the Boston marathon with just water. So surely I’m fat-adapted. I recently switched over to keto for cancer and dementia prevention but now I have a problem—I’m CONSTANTLY hungry. I consume well over my usual 2500 calories which includes 200g healthy fats. I’m doing yoga and keep my net carbs under 20g daily. I’m 36 years old and have a normal BMI. But this hunger is excruciating and nothing seems to satisfy it. Will this eventually normalize? What’s odd is when I simply ate low-carb, high-fat that wasn’t ketogenic, I never felt this kind of hunger. Weird. Any thoughts? Thanks! Emmy 3. How does an older person who requires more protein in their diet to prevent muscle loss eat a ketogenic diet that moderates protein? Hi Jimmy and Dr. Cole, I’m a sedentary 70-year old man and I’ve read that older people need to be eating more protein (along with strength training) in order to counter any age-related muscle loss. My blood work looks great other than my DO adding progesterone and estrogen since I am starting menopause. A strange thing happened when I started keto, though, that I’d like your thoughts about. Hey Jimmy and Will, Love your show and I wanted to get your take on something that happened to me recently. I was admitted to the ER for severe pain in my abdomen and it was gallstones. They pushed hard for me to have surgery, but I chose not to since there was no infection. I’m 56, 6 feet tall, and 169 pounds while in pretty fit shape. I’ve been eating keto with periods of intermittent fasting along with Bulletproof Coffee for the past three years. Is it possible these gallstones are a result of the saturated fat and cholesterol I’m consuming? If so, then how can I return to my beloved Bulletproof Coffee, coconut oil on my veggies, grass-fed meats, and other high-quality fats? I was really shocked that this happened as I felt I had at last found the diet that was right for me. Many thanks for any insights you might have about why this happened. Should I be concerned about my “grossly lipemic” blood work that resulted from eating ketogenic with intermittent fasting? I’m an African American, 6'1", 64 years old, and currently 195 pounds with approximately 20% body fat. I’ve also added in intermittent fasting of 16/8 on most days. I recently had blood work that showed I am "grossly lipemic.” As a result of this, there was no cholesterol recorded. EVERYTHING else was good. So, should I be concerned? Thanks, and please keep up the great work. P.S. I have converted my wife to keto from Weight Watchers. Big win! Bill 3. Since going keto, why am I have dizzy spells with normal blood pressure and blood sugar levels? Hey guys, I love your podcast and am working my way through your backlist. I’m 62 and have been eating ketogenic since May. I’ve lost over 40 pounds with about 10-20 more pounds to go. I’m eating low-carb, high-fat and have noticed my blood glucose has come down significantly since eating this way along with an average blood ketone level of 1.6. I was taking blood pressure medication prior to going keto and I’ve come off of it now that BP has normalized with the diet. I’ve noticed that sometimes I get dizzy while standing or doing light work. When I’ve tested my blood pressure and blood glucose after this has happened, they were normal at 120/83 and 82 respectively. I take a potassium and a magnesium pill every day along with L-Thyroxine for my thyroid and 3 Lyrica per day for nerve pain in my foot. Do you have any idea what may be causing these dizzy spells? Here’s what Jimmy and Will talked about in Episode 82: HOT TOPICS: Carb cycling improving health vs. losing weight which is more important—macronutrients or micronutrients? – 'Fat but fit' still has higher risk of heart disease, study confirms – MEDICAL EVANGELISM: A HAND OUT FOR BAD DIET ADVICE? and LIFESTYLE MEDICINE: FRONT IN BIG RELIGION’S WAR ON RED MEAT? – HEALTH: Cholesterol: why it needs a rethink – LCHF/Keto in Brazil: Contra a corrente, avança a dieta com base em gorduras (Google Translate: Against the current, advances the diet based on fats) – Why would my blood glucose levels go extremely high after beginning on a well-formulated ketogenic diet? Is it possible keto actually caused this to happen? Hi Jimmy and Dr. Will, I’m having a reaction to the keto diet that I think you may find interesting and can chime in with a few thoughts for me about it. Although I am experiencing quite a few benefits eating this way, it appears the ketogenic approach just isn’t working for my blood glucose levels. I've been eating keto for 5 weeks averaging around 26g total carbs each day, 70g protein, and 220g fat. This is tracked closely by a dietitian and my blood ketones which are measured by a finger prick are consistently above .5 mmol and usually averages around 1. However, my fasting blood glucose hovers around 200 and seems to be steadily increasing. Here's the thing: I’m not diabetic. My fasting blood glucose before keto was 93 and my A1c was 5.5. Pre-keto, while I was eating just low carb with about 70-100g/day of carbohydrates, my insulin levels were low at 1.2. It's possible that going keto has exposed an underlying problem, but it seems to me that it's also possible that keto caused the problem I’m now having with my blood sugar levels and that the diet just doesn't work for me. I'm really trying to figure out which one of these it is. Any assistance you can give about this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for this podcast and keep up the great work! David AND Hi Jimmy and Will, I am having with my morning fasted blood sugar readings in the 120s and 130s and sometimes as high as in the 180s. Two weeks ago, I was put on 1500mg of Metformin and a ketogenic diet with regular periods of fasting for 18 hours a day. So far I’ve lost 14 pounds, but this blood sugar thing is frustrating for me. I hope you have some answers for me. Thank you, From a very stressed out Tony KEY QUOTE: “If you’re going to fast, begin with a ketogenic diet because keto will cause you to be satiated and fasting will happen naturally.” – Jimmy Moore – STUDY: HIIT fights insulin resistance in women at risk of type 2 diabetes 1. Why am I experiencing an increased amount of gas since adopting a ketogenic diet? Hey Jimmy and Will, I have been eating ketogenic for about three months and while I feel pretty good overall, I have encountered a few issues that seem to be sticking around. I have been experiencing dry skin, which is very unusual in the middle of a humid summer in upstate New York. I have also been having some digestive issues that show up as gas. I do eat very healthy with high quality fats, including grass-fed and pastured meats and eggs, unrefined coconut oil, olive oil, ghee, avocados, coconut milk, coconut butter, and some nuts and seeds. But I know I am experiencing more gas than I should and I'm not sure what may be causing this. I don't eat any grains, dairy, or legumes, but something is disturbing my digestion in the worst way. Also, I’ve noticed my acne has been consistently been pretty bad as well since going keto. I would greatly appreciate any insights you can give me into these issues. Thanks for your help! Jerry 2. What can I do about the unrelenting constipation I am feeling while on a ketogenic diet? Hey guys, I’ve been eating low-carb, then keto going on five years now and I love it. But biggest side effect that I’ve experienced is unrelenting constipation. When I ate the SAD diet, I was regular everyday. But as soon as I go low-carb/keto, it's a big problem. I consume avocados, greens, and/or broccoli everyday. Additionally, I eat up to 3 tablespoons of coconut oil and it doesn't seem to help at all. A famous ketogenic doctor told me to take milk of magnesia and I tried up to 3-4 teaspoons at night and still not regular. Yes, I definitely go more often when I take that, but I don’t want to have to take a whole bottle every single week. I drink plenty of water with up to 3 teaspoons of sea salt in it. I also supplement with magnesium malate since the citrate version creates a more laxative effect. So it doesn’t appear that I'm dehydrated or lacking electrolytes. The only thing I can think of that it could possibly be is stress. I'm not overly stressed but do have my moments. Please help me figure out how to get this constipation under control while eating keto. What is it about the low-carb, high-fat, ketogenic diet that improves skin health so much? Dear Jimmy & Dr. Will, First of all, welcome to Dr. Will who I think brings a fresh new perspective that I like to Keto Talk. On his first episode, Will mentioned as an aside that eating keto can be very good for the skin. This resonated with me because I have seen that happening in my own ketogenic journey. I used to experience super dry skin prior to eating keto using expensive moisturizers and even those didn’t help me. After 3-4 months of eating keto, I noticed my skin was super moist without any moisturizers…even when I am getting lots of sun at the beach. Amazing! So my question for you guys is this: Why is a ketogenic diet so beneficial for the skin? What’s the mechanism going on inside that body that it keeping me so satiated all the time. Hi Jimmy and Dr. Cole, I have been listening to your podcasts for many years, Jimmy, but I have never heard the answer to the following question—Why do I never feel any hunger while eating keto? I will feel a little dizzy sometimes and even have difficulty thinking from time to time, but never any hunger. I am reading your book Keto Clarity to learn more of the nuances of nutritional ketosis and to help me understand what is going on in my body better. This lack of hunger thing is driving me crazy trying to figure it out. Keep up the good work. You are making a difference in this world and for that, I thank you. Lorna JIMMY AND DR. Is there a company that looks at the relevant numbers? Hey guys, I’ve enjoyed listening to you and your new co-host Dr. Cole on Keto Talk the past couple of weeks. I’m looking forward to hearing a lot more from you two! I have a quick question for you guys to address that I think impacts a lot of us Ketonians: Is there a life insurance company that understands the new way to look at lipid panels and related lab markers that give more credence to things like HDL, triglycerides, hsCRP, lower small LDL-P, lower ApoB, and more? It seems most of these companies prevent an otherwise healthy person from obtaining proper levels of life insurance unless their LDL-C and total cholesterol are in line with conventional thinking which we know is an incomplete picture. Can the fat you eat on a ketogenic diet make hot flashes and swelling worse just like carbs do? Hey Jimmy and Will, I’m a regular listener to Keto Talk and love what you are doing here. My question for you guys is about whether the fat I’m eating on my ketogenic diet is making my hot flashes worse and my fingers swell. I’m 57 years old, weigh 130 pounds, and am addicted to sugar. But when I replace sugar with fat, all of these things seem to happen in my health. Is this normal? Maybe I need to cut my fat and red meat consumption and eat more vegetables. Do you guys think this is a good idea? Thanks so much, Rainny KEY QUOTE: “ If you're going to fast, begin with a ketogenic diet because keto will cause you to be satiated and fasting will happen naturally” – Jimmy Moore 2. Is eating more vegetables on my ketogenic diet the answer to my adrenal fatigue that seems to be halting my weight loss progress? Dear Jimmy and Dr. Cole, I have been on a ketogenic lifestyle since May and have not lost a single pound. I keep my carbs below 20g and went to see a ketogenic-friendly physician since I thought I was perhaps eating too much fat. In doing more research into what I might be dealing with, I suspected adrenal fatigue that has led to exhaustion and lab tests have confirmed this to be true. My keto doctor requires me to eat a lot more vegetables in my diet, but now I’m hungry again despite showing 1.0 mmol in my blood ketones. I’m a bit frustrated right now about what’s going on with me because I should be losing weight, right? Thanks for helping to point me in the right direction. What natural pain remedies can be used by Ketonians who would rather not take medications? Hey Jimmy and Will, I’ve been experiencing an increase in pain in my shoulders, elbows, and knees since I went keto two months ago. I’m a 62-year old male who was diagnosed with hypothyroidism four years ago by an allopathic doctor and prescribed Synthroid. I never liked the side effects of that medication, so I switched over to iodine supplements to go more natural in my treatment of this. Keto has given me great energy, no more food cravings, and has zapped out my hunger allowing me to intermittent fast for 16 hours daily. I lost 45 pounds on a traditional diet before going ketogenic and have lost another 30 pounds in the two months I’ve been keto. My goal is another 100 pounds, but I need something natural to give me pain relief while I’m on this journey. Shalom, George JIMMY AND DR. Hey guys, I was wondering if it is normal to get sick of eating dietary fat after three days of eating keto. I absolutely love it for the first three days eating high-fat foods, but then something happens by day four when I can’t even think of eating another ketogenic meal. Is this normal and will I get over this? I really want to do this diet because of all of the health benefits and maybe lose a few pounds.
