I’m 5’6” tall and weigh 179 pounds as a 61 years old woman and have been keto for a couple of years. I started eating this way when my family doctor suggested I may be pre-diabetic with a fasting blood glucose of 101. My blood ketones remain in the 1.5-2.0 range, so I know I’m burning fat. Initially I lose 55 pounds, but for some strange reason I gained back 10 pounds. Although I have a function medicine medical doctor, she’s no fan of me trying longer fasts because of my hypothyroid issues which I take Armour thyroid for. I’ve tried changing things up in the way I’m doing keto, including a protein sparing modified fast with significantly less fat than I typically eat and carnivore. These did help me lose some weight, but both gave me problems and the weight I lost came right back on with my regular keto diet. I am currently preparing for a women's mini-triathlon (1.5 mile kayak, 11-mile bike, and 3.1 mile walk or run) which takes place in February. I did this last year in a fasted state and did great! I feel like that's not going to be the case this time around. I'd like to at least remain keto but I’m thinking being mostly carnivore is where I feel my best. I will add that my doctor prescribed me Gabapentin 100mg for me to take at night to help with pain that interferes with my sleep. In the earlier episodes I was listening to, Dr. Nally mentioned that Long QT is a reason to be monitored by your doctor when starting keto. This piqued my interest since I deal with this condition. I have an implanted heart monitor that checks for abnormal rhythms 24/7, so I’m assuming that would catch any issues. Are there any specific precautions I should be taking with long QT and keto (mine is the incredibly rare genetic variant, Long QT type 10, which has to do with a sodium channel pathway and is most similar to Type 3 of the more commonly known types). Hi Jimmy and Will, I am a naturopath in Australia and I have been keto for a few months. I had a fairly easy adaptation but my partner is now having a lot of nausea. He started a couple of weeks ago and got into ketosis in about 48 hours with blood ketones around 1.2. He was doing so well until I made the mistake of giving him some cake I had made with almond and coconut flour. He almost immediately started feeling sluggish and experienced mental fatigue and fogginess as his blood ketones crash to under 0.5. He was able to get back into ketosis again, but the nausea and other side effects have been relentless ever since. We’ve been adding in more salt to try to help, but nothing is helping so far. I feel like I broke the momentum he had on his keto and would love any suggestions about how to help him get back on track again. He came to keto from a mostly fruit-based diet for a year prior to this. I feel my partner has so much to gain from eating this way coming from a history of chronic fatigue! I simply can't afford grass-fed beef. I can only get it at a health food store and it's way too expensive for me. I normally shop at Costco and Sobey’s grocery store. I buy pork only from humanely-raised brands. That’s really the only feasible healthy meat choice for me to consume. I buy organic whenever I can. I like beef liver, beef heart, and chicken liver, but they don't ever come from grass fed or even organic sources. What would you advise to NOT eat at all amongst these non-grass-fed/organic choices for meat? What should I be eating on my keto plan that is very healthy that maybe I’m not thinking about? How do I stay on budget in my finances while pursuing optimal health through nutritional ketosis? Why did I experience reactive hypoglycemia after eating a ketogenic meal? Hey Jimmy and Dr. Cole, I’m a big fan of you guys and four days into eating keto. I feel like I’m starting to get the hang of this and wanted to run something by you. I ate the following food a couple of days ago: one medium avocado, two eggs over easy, two Italian sausages, 3 tablespoons of sour cream, and 3 tablespoons of Kerrygold grass-fed butter. After consuming this food, I almost immediately felt flush, dizzy, and off. I started researching Dr. Google and it looks like I had reactive hypoglycemia. Is this normal on a ketogenic diet or what did I do wrong? Interestingly, I had a fatty coffee and pastrami with cream cheese today and didn’t have any of those same symptoms from he other day. Could it be the extra fat in my meal today compared to the other day? Thanks for the advice on this one. Matthew 5. Are there concerns that medicinal herbs and adaptogens can play a negative role in a patient’s health much in the same way as a pharmaceutical drug? Hey Jimmy and Will, I listen to you guys all the time and Will I hear you talk about various herbs and adaptogens that you’ve found useful in your clinical practice for your patients basically every week. You also talk about the side effects that come from prescription medications. As a fellow medical practitioner, I see both herbs and pharmaceutical drugs as basically extra chemicals substances that you are adding to a patient’s body in the hopes of eliciting a helpful or healing response. All these extra chemicals and compounds, whether food/plant based OR pharmaceutical based, potentially can interact with each other in very bad ways. In the hospital where I work, I’ve seen examples of herbs causing liver and bleeding problems and interacting with other medications. The word “natural” does not particularly reassure me; cocaine, toxic mushrooms, poison ivy, and castor beans are all natural and they are also all noxious. A lot of the pharmaceuticals we use (penicillin, digitalis, the list goes on and on) are basically purified natural products. Pharmaceuticals, at least in theory, have to go through a rigorous testing process including ruling out the very powerful placebo effect. My problem is that herbs and such don’t have to go through that same scrutiny before being made available to the general public. We really have no idea what the dosage of the active ingredient(s) might be from bottle to bottle, brand to brand, of all these herbs, do we? I’ve been low-carb, high-fat, ketogenic for the past five years, was a featured success story in Keto Clarity, have been on Jimmy’s podcast, and teach at an Osteopathic medical school now. I certainly have no objection to herbs, adaptogens, and other natural health supplementation and would never support banning them. But just how well tested are they? Thanks again for a great show! Here’s a little bit about me and my current routine: Info: weightlifter, sprinter, 33 years, 5' 11" male, 70-120 g protein/day, fat to satiety, 1/2 lb raw liver/wk, 2 cloves raw garlic/day, 1.5 g fish oil/day, 600 mg transdermal magnesium/day, 400 mg iodine/day (kelp), 1 g vit C/day (acerola cherry powder), 10 g glycine/day and an occasional scoop of collagen powder. SALT: If I supplement more than about 2 g of sodium a day (usually in 2 L water, Redmond Real Salt) I get nasal congestion and have NO IDEA why (vasodilation or constriction? blood pressure?). Yet in the keto community it is recommended to eat 4 g sodium/day or more. Are the amounts and ratio of sodium and potassium just very understudied and based on the shit standard diet? NOBODY seems to have a good grasp on this. POTASSIUM: Ideal potassium falls in the 2 - 4 g/day range. The fact that sodium helps retain potassium complicates this further. Also, I can't supplement with NoSalt (potassium chloride) because it's said to be dangerous (I take 500mg anyways and haven't noticed anything bad such as heart palps.) But, if I were to take 2 - 4 g would it be dangerous? I can't get this from vegetables because I'm zero carb, and how on earth did our ancestors get it? It makes zero sense to me that you would need to eat inordinate amounts of spinach and chard just to reach this questionable potassium goal. I feel like I really have this diet bolted down, but the lack of specificity with electrolytes in the community is majorly frustrating. Please drop a knowledge bomb on me. Why am I short of breath the day after interval training since I shifted over from carb-loading to a ketogenic diet? Hey Jimmy and Dr. Cole, I have been a carb-loading cyclist for many years and switched over to the low-carb/high-fat diet about 5 months ago. My problem is that I can go out for an hour of interval training on my bike and the very next day I am short of breath when going up a flight of stairs. I am 67 years old, 5' 10”, and weigh 163 pounds. I do not have any of the old cycling problems of blood sugar swings and can go for many hours before getting hungry in the morning. Dear Jimmy and Will, I have been eating keto for the past year and have seen incredible effects on my weight and health markers. However, I noticed my blood pressure and resting heart rate have come way down since adopting this way of eating. My BP has always been on the lower end, but my resting heart rate is regularly down in the 50’s and sometimes even the 40’s now. My cardiologist said it’s because of my weight loss and exercise routine, but this seems to have happened suddenly over the past three months. You both do such a great job! I started eating keto in January 2017. Unfortunately I wasn’t too strict last year with way too many “cheats” and I had a terrible time breaking my sugar addiction. Still I dropped 30 pounds in the first 2 months. I also do intermittent fasting and short extended fasts. I very gradually dropped another 10 pounds since then for a total of 40. Dear Jimmy and Will, I am a 49-year old man who has been low-carb/keto for 2 years and I’ve lost 50 pounds and have kept it off. I don’t measure ketones because I don’t suffer from metabolic syndrome or diabetes so I can’t justify the expense of a breath meter or the pain of a finger prick. However, based on energy level, constant satiety, and mental clarity I’m pretty sure I am in ketosis more often than not. I recently started taking hour long walks at a brisk pace and transitioned to interval sprints with a goal of eventually running a 5K. At the end my last two sessions I smelled a strong ammonia scent. What does this mean? Online forums mentioned the following words and phrases: burning protein as fuel, amino acids, urea, nitrogen, uric acid, low glucose/glycogen levels in the muscles, and wait for it….kidneys! Why does my keto husband get tingling hands while sleeping? Why do I have an itchy scalp while eating ketogenic? Hi Jimmy and Dr. Cole, I listen to you guys often. Thanks for everything you do. I have a couple of questions for you guys: 1. When my husband eats strict keto, his hands tingle and go numb especially when sleeping. The strange thing is if he eats lots of carbs this doesn't happen. He supplements with potassium and magnesium, but it isn't helping. 2. I have eaten a strict keto diet for 18 months with no cheating with junk food. I have a bad itch towards the front of my scalp. It’s not dandruff, just a bad itch. Why has my fasting insulin and hsCRP levels increased since adopting a ketogenic diet? Hi Jimmy and Will, I just had some blood work done and my lipid panel looks worse, although I understand that this isn't uncommon when you’re losing weight following a ketogenic diet. Maria Emmerich stated in one of her books that all the excess fat from the fat cells gets released into the blood when you go keto. So, that part makes some sense to me. However, my fasting insulin has also increased (it was 10 in June 2016 and is now 13) and my C-Reactive Protein reading is also dramatically higher (1.6 in June, now 7.7). I'm mostly just shocked about the fasting insulin since I'm not eating hardly any carbs at all and no sugar. I'd be interested to hear any ideas you might have. I eat chicken or beef (homemade) bone broth regularly, Sauerkarut (no sugar) regularly, avocados almost daily, red leaf lettuce salad with black olives, some onion (white or green) with Primal Kitchen Ranch dressing almost daily, free range eggs, grass fed meats whenever possible, Wellshire sugar-free bacon, grass-fed ghee, coconut oil, avocado oil, Chai tea sweetened with Stevia with whipping cream (grass-fed), Lakanto monkfruit chocolate, cheeses from grass-fed cows, some beets, Miracle Noodles from time to time, and ketogenic wine usually only once per week. That's pretty much the extent. No fruit, no starchy vegetables. I usually don't eat until about noon every day and try not to eat after 6:30 pm. Is there any scientific research that connects ketosis with treating vertigo? Dear Jimmy and Dr. Cole, I am a HUGE fan of Keto talk and I have been eating keto for over four months. I'm a very healthy 38-year old woman who suffered from vertigo for about six months everyday that forced me to stop doing yoga since I couldn’t keep my balance. Within the first six weeks of eating keto, my vertigo completely vanished and I was shocked to say the least. On New Year’s Eve, I went on a bit of a sugar binge cheat and came out of ketosis and my vertigo returned with a vengeance much worse than it had ever been before a couple of days later. It thankfully only lasted about a week and hasn’t been back since. Seeing how powerful keto was in managing my vertigo, I definitely don’t want to ever get out of ketosis again. Is there any research studies connecting a ketogenic diet to curing vertigo? Or have you seen this in any of your patients in your functional medicine clinic, Dr. Cole? I don't know if it's coincidental or if keto actually stopped my vertigo. My doctors all say they have no idea what’s causing it to begin with and now I’m curious why keto is seemingly resolving it. Hi Jimmy and Will, I wanted to ask you guys about the safety of nursing while in ketosis. I am a physician who was reamed in an online medical mom-focused weight loss forum because I shared that I was nursing my baby while in ketosis and people were saying that ketones are harmful to babies and can cause developmental delays. I knew this was completely whacked since we know ketosis is a natural state for babies and humans in general. I’m eating 60+g carbs daily, so I’m probably only mildly keto anyway. The studies they cited had to do with epileptic children eating ketogenic diets and having neurological delays. My baby eats the same keto foods I eat and I add in a few berries for a sweet treat. She’s completely healthy and has never been sick. I was just stunned to hear so many of my fellow medical colleagues react so harshly to what I see as being an extremely healthy way to eat. How do I deal with this low progesterone to optimize and complement my ketogenic nutrition? Dear Jimmy and Dr. Cole, I have learned so much from both of you on my health journey! I have lost 50 pounds since last May using keto and intermittent fasting, implementing much of your advice, and I am now very close to my weight goal. I hit the occasional plateau along the way and at those times I noticed I would need to shift my focus from losing weight to understanding the big picture of my overall health. In that regard, my Mirena IUD (which releases synthetic progesterone teaching my body to make less of its own progesterone) began to seem relevant. I had it implanted in November 2012 and replaced in November 2017. When I had it replaced, I was weighing daily so it was easy to notice a six pound weight jump overnight for no apparent reason.This happened three days after I got the new device and it led me to do some research. I concluded that I really need to get that thing removed which I did in mid-December 2017 over the pushback from my doctor. I got my period back almost immediately and it lasted about a week, but since then (40 days) I have not had my period again. More disturbingly, I am now experiencing other symptoms like itchy skin, shakiness, dizziness, fatigue, brain fog, mood swings, and weakness. I considered electrolyte balance and treated for that with extra salt and magnesium (which always works for me during fasting)—but no effect. I tested my blood sugar when feeling extra shaky and weak—it really felt like hypoglycemia—and it was 83 preprandial (my A1C in November was 4.7). Based on my research, my symptoms suggest low progesterone; if that is the case, how should I proceed? Should I tough it out and wait for my body to ramp its own progesterone production back up? Should I take bioidentical progesterone, or would that throw off my overall hormone balance? Should I look instead to adaptogens like Maca? Is there anything I can focus on nutritionally to encourage a return to optimal hormone balance? Hi guys, Can five plus years of eating high protein be just as damaging to someone’s metabolism and insulin levels as eating five years worth of carbage? It seems like right now I am just maintaining weight and body fat levels after the initial water weight loss. I have been in nutritional ketosis for the past five weeks with blood ketone levels ranging from .6-1.3 in the morning. My fasting morning blood glucose readings are 85-102. Also, does having super low triglycerides (below 45) show a sign of any health issues? My triglycerides have been that low for years, way before keto. Thank you so much guys. In fact, the people who ran the test took extra long because they repeated it a few times just to be sure there wasn’t a lab error. I’m pretty freaked out by the results and don’t know if there is something problematic going on or if this might be typical of someone on keto. Much appreciated! Dear Jimmy and Dr. Cole, People sometimes talk about burning fat and burning ketones in the same breath as though they were more or less the same thing, but don't think that's quite the case, is it? Let me describe what I think is roughly going on and then please correct me where I am wrong: Assuming blood insulin levels are low enough, fat can be released from the adipose cells. It was in the adipose cells in the form of triglycerides and after release, it is converted into free fatty acids and then the glycerol part is converted into glucose. The free fatty acids go via the blood and can be used in the muscles directly as fuel, for example. Some of the free fatty acids make it to the liver and can be converted to ketones, some of which are used to fuel the brain, and probably can also fuel the muscles and other parts of the body. Now, in some descriptions, I see ketones being described as byproducts of fat metabolism which I assume means that first the fatty acids are burned for fuel and then ketones result as a byproduct of this metabolism. Is that correct, and if so, can those ketones also be used as fuel? If so, it implies that fat is indeed a super fuel because it can be used twice so to speak. So then what is the biochemical result of burning ketones? Keep in mind that I am seeking, if possible, a reply that is understandable to a layperson like myself but also one which does not oversimplify the science if that’s humanly possible. Unfortunately, I was suddenly diagnosed with a horrible inflammatory disorder called Polymyalgia Rheumatica and the only treatment for it is the steroid prednisone which causes an insulin response that can eventually lead to Type 2 diabetes. Sadly, I have to take this steroid for the time being and I’m concerned pairing it with my low-carb, high fat diet will lead to massive weight gain in the belly due to the extra fat since my body will have a more difficult time breaking down fat stores. I’ve only been on the prednisone for a few days, but I’m trying to deal with this now before it becomes a problem. Do you have any ideas about whether my concerns are justified or not? She’s lost 15 pounds this year from simply cutting calories, but she’s still eating things like Saltines every single night. While her A1c has gone down, it’s still at 8.0. I made her listen to the Keto Clarity audiobook on a long car ride and we got through the first 10 chapters with her hanging on every word. Thanks to your book, Jimmy, she wanted to try to make a change in her diet for the first time ever. It is VERY unusual for her to be interested in anything new, so needless to say I was excited. I used to deal with several hypoglycemia when I ate high-carb, low-fat and I was hoping going ketogenic this year would help with this. While the hypoglycemic episodes have become less frequent, it’s still an issue for me and preventing me from enjoying the freedom from food bondage that seemingly everyone else is experiencing. I've been doing low-carb (not keto) for about a year and have noticed I get woozy after eating my evening meals that makes me very tired, unable to concentrate, and feel like I have to lie down lest I fall. My doctor says it’s reactive hypoglycemia and I’ve tried eating sugar to deal with it when it happens and it helps for a while but isn’t the solution to eliminating it. My doctor says I should eat more protein and eat every three hours to prevent this. When I added in more protein it acted very similarly to the sugar not giving me full relief. The best solution I’ve found is when I go to sleep. As for eating every three hours, I’m just not hungry enough to do that. Any insights you guys can share about this? I regularly see average ketones of 1.7 mmol/L. However, there is one drawback I experience at least once a week and upwards of four times a week. It’s the dreaded leg cramps. They are more common at night, often when I’m sleeping, but I’ve experienced them pretty much anytime throughout the day. I believe the ketogenic lifestyle truly is the ideal way to eat, but I shouldn’t be having this major and often quite painful side effect, right? I’ve heard you discuss the issue of muscle cramps in the past and how they’re typically due to dehydration and/or electrolyte depletion or imbalance. The quandary I now have is how can I really consider this ketogenic diet to be “ideal” if it leaves me with this leg cramp issue that I seemingly have to solve with supplementation. Hey guys, What is a patient who eats keto supposed to do when they are in the hospital? I need to have aortic heart valve and stem replacement surgery someday and I worry about what this hospital stay will do to me. I’m a severely insulin resistant Type 2 diabetic who had an A1c of 10.4 prior to going on a ketogenic diet. Three months after going keto, that number dropped to 5.6. I’m keto for life now, but this hospital stay will be a challenge to avoid the crappy carbage they like to serve as well as the sugar-filled goop they put in the feeding tubes. Hi Jimmy and Will, I recently began working with a nutritional therapy practitioner and have been practicing the GAPS diet for about a week now to begin healing my gut and digestive system as well as to detoxify. Before this diet, I was following a ketogenic approach along with intermittent fasting for 16:8 naturally and then practicing 42-hour fasts three times a week and losing weight fairly easily. Now my weight has gone up some and plateaued. My NTP has asked me to stop fasting since it might deprive my body of the nutrients it needs to heal. At the first stage of the elimination portion of the GAPS diet, you eat animal meat boiled in bone broth with specifically approved vegetables like squash, broccoli, onion or cauliflower that are also boiled in bone broth. I am becoming convinced my plateau has to do with the higher amount of protein in this approach. I am only able to add animal fat to the stews and soups that are GAPS-approved and realize it's not the larger amount of fat I was eating on keto. So it seems I’m now eating a high-protein, moderate fat, low-carb diet. Do you have any insight whether or not it’s the protein that is stalling my weight loss and even gaining weight again? I have been eating a ketogenic diet for over a year after starting my nutritional health journey with a primal/Paleo diet. The pounds on the scale simply are not moving. My doctor had said according to my health markers that there is nothing wrong with my metabolism. My thyroid and adrenals were good and my A1C is 5.0 showing my blood sugar to be well-controlled. According to my doctor, my sex hormone levels indicate I am still fertile at the age of 46. When I test blood ketones, I am .5 or higher and even seeing as high as 2.2 mmol. Prior to eating clean, my cycles were becoming irregular, but after 2 1/2 years of eating well my cycles are now back on track. I am having cyclical symptoms of fatigue, moodiness, and joint pain that is not in correlation with my cycle. In other words, as long as I'm registering a reading within the nutritional ketosis range of 0.5-3.0 mmol on my blood ketone meter, is it safe to assume that I didn't load up my glycogen stores to the point of fat storage? One of the pleasures of eating keto is I get to enjoy cooking and eating real foods like pasture raised chicken and making bone broth. However, I do have a concern about the chicken fat containing linoleic acid, an omega-6 polyunsaturated fat (PUFA). I learned more about these reading The Big Fat Surprise by Nina Teicholz where she describes PUFAs as obesegenic because they store more fat in a low insulin environment while increasing insulin resistance outside the fat cells. Even Dr. Nally’s beloved bacon contains large amounts of these PUFAs as well. Did that wake you up Doc? Beef fat, lamb fat, and butter are all low in PUFAs. I have had autoimmune issues my whole life and my doctors couldn’t figure it out. One of them once told me, "we usually only see these symptoms in overweight people", but overweight I am not. When first going Paleo, I made a drastic mistake without knowing it. The Paleo crowd was all about the bananas and potatoes back then so that's what I did. Even though I am not big fans of either of these they were the least offensive carbs and it seemed to help. I have noticed that since I do not feel hungry on a regular basis it is easy to go many hours without food while out running errands without noticing how long it has been. My Raynaud’s then rears it's ugly head and I feel it. I'm not sure if it's going too long on an empty stomach or something else happening, but the Raynaud's is the only thing that has gotten worse since I started eating keto. Do you know why this is happening? I am already taking a magnesium supplement to help. Thank you both for your time and effort and keep up the great work. Sarah 2. Why did I start experiencing very sore spots on my skin when I decided to cheat on my low-carb, ketogenic diet? Hey Jimmy and The Doc, I recently found your podcast and have greatly enjoyed getting caught up on all the episodes! I have a question that might actually be a new one for you as I haven’t heard it discussed on your show before. I have been eating low-carb, ketogenic with weekly cheat days as Tim Ferriss outlines in his book The Four-Hour Body. After about six months of doing this, I noticed I would wake up with very sore spots on my skin following a cheat day. It seemed to be concentrated on my torso and sometimes on my upper arms, neck, and scalp. This soreness was on the surface of the skin, not the muscles or joints. The best way I can describe it is it felt like a giant bruise that was only painful when you pressed on it. My skin would be so sensitive that I would skip running or other exercise that day because the mere bouncing of my skin was too uncomfortable to bear. The surface area of skin that would be sore seemed to correlate positively with how much crappy carbage I splurged on the previous day. Interestingly, the first areas to become sore were the areas in which I tend to store fat, such as the love handles, and the soreness would radiate out from there. If I had a really obscene cheat day, then even my upper leg skin would get sore. Very surprisingly, this phenomenon did not go away when I went back to the high-carb Standard American Diet for a period of time. It seemed anytime I indulged in something particularly sugary/carby, my skin got sore. This soreness would only subside after a day of eating low-carb keto again. So my questions for you guys is this: What could be causing this? Is it just a rapid-onset generalized edema resulting from a significant increase in carbs? Why did it not begin occurring until a good 6+ months into eating low-carb and why did it persist after I went back on a high-carb diet? Have I permanently altered how my body reacts to carbs by going low-carb for so long? Finally, should I be concerned about this? While trying to find answers to these questions online, I saw this “sore skin” phenomenon mentioned by a couple of people on low-carb diet forums who claimed they never experienced this before going low-carb. Dear Keto Talk hosts, I am a 62-year old female and have been moving to keto through the usual progression—it started 20 years ago trying to eat local and real food, then on to WAPF, then Paleo, and now low-carb, ketogenic consuming 20-40g carbohydrates daily. Most of my carbs come from salad, kefir, cheese, and kombucha. My blood sugars have been coming down but I am still in the high 90s for fasting blood sugar in the morning. I have only seen .5 once on the blood ketone meter. I am trying to figure out what might be preventing ketosis for me and I have a couple of suspects. Because I have some of the MTHFR family of variations, my doctor has me on 1000 mcg of L-methylfolate and adenosyl/hydroxy B12. I am also taking 10 mg daily of Adderall. Would any of these be having an adverse effect on getting into ketosis? And does ketosis have any positive effect on improving adult ADHD? Stephanie KETO TALK MAILBOX - Why can’t I stay in ketosis eating what seems to be a well-formulated low-carb, moderate protein, high-fat, ketogenic diet? Hey Jimmy and The Doc, I listen to your Keto Talk podcast all the time and I have been doing keto for nearly 2 months. I am 6'7" and weigh 220 pounds with 16% body fat. I started keto for all the health benefits, energy, and disease prevention it provides. I eat about 100g protein, less than 20g carbs, and 200g of fat. This all seems right to me and I am being very strict with it. I get lots of sleep, am not stressed, and have experimented with exercising a little and not doing any exercise. There’s only one problem: I JUST CANT STAY IN KETOSIS! I bought a blood ketone monitor and the highest reading I have seen is 1.2 for a very short 2-day period and most of the time I am less than 0.5. Every morning I wake up I am 0.2 and then it’ll rise to 0.6 mid day and once in awhile I'll get to 0.8 in the evening or sometimes it goes the other way and I'll drop back down to 0.3. I eat bacon and eggs in the morning with coffee, MCT oil, and full fat whipping cream as well as high-fat meats and cheeses or cream cheeses for lunch and supper. The frustrating thing for me is my wife is getting 2.5-3.5 on the ketone meter eating the exact same thing I am. HELP! I hope you have an idea why I can't stay in ketosis. I'm on my second time through a 6 day cycle of 3 days fasting followed by 3 days feasting. Before I started, I was eating keto to satiety and slowly gaining weight. I was eating a lot at night, eating lots of macadamias, and drinking wine. So, I was primed for a change. My first day of a 3-day fast started with keto coffee (lots of coconut oil and a pinch of cayenne). Midday I had a mug of bone broth with a Tbsp of butter melted in it. At night I went right for salt-water with a dash of Chipotle chili pepper powder. I use Morton lite-salt so I can get some Potassium. On the second and third days of the fast I only drank black coffee and my hot salt-water concoction. At the end of the 3-day fast my fingers were getting cold but I had lost 7 pounds. I broke the fast with a handful of nuts and then a big meal after about 30 minutes. I feasted for 3 days eating 2 meals a day within a 6-hour window for an 18-hour intermittent fast. I know I overate a couple times with plenty of butter and macadamia nuts for lots of fat—lots. I was poaching burgers in butter, eating rib eye steaks, fried fish with keto breading, and an entire jar of tartar sauce. Still, I didn't gain an ounce in the 3 days that I feasted. Yesterday was my first day back to fasting. I started the day with keto coffee again, and my salt-water concoction with 1 tbsp of butter, and a couple more of those without the butter later in the day. This morning I had lost another 3 pounds. So, that's 10 pounds in 7 days—the most weight I've ever lost in a week. Ever. Also, last night my blood sugar was the lowest I've ever recorded it at 66. The first day of fasting is challenging, even the second time around. Last night I was dreaming of fast food. But, I got over it, and it was smooth sailing again here on Day 2. This pattern seems to really be working for me and I plan to continue on this path until it stops working. Thanks for the great advice. You guys are awesome.
