When Erika first heard about intermittent fasting, she was skeptical. Her skepticism shifted in 2018 after reading Gin's book, Delay, Don't Deny, and Dr. Jason Fung's The Obesity Code. She shares her long history with dieting, starting from Weight Watchers in the ninth grade, and her eventual freedom from food obsession through adopting intermittent fasting.Erika initially experienced about 5 pounds of weight loss but hit a plateau and didn't lose any more weight for three years, despite still having weight to lose. She loved the freedom IF brought to her, but her weight was stuck. She began incorporating berberine, which led to a dramatic weight loss of 30 pounds between March and October of 2021.Throughout the conversation, Erika highlights the importance of listening to your body and finding a fasting routine that fits one's lifestyle. She emphasizes the health benefits she's experienced over the years, noting how intermittent fasting helped her reduce instances of illness and manage her weight despite frequent travel. Gin and Erika discuss the mental aspects of fasting and food freedom, stressing the need for empowered choices over restrictive eating. The discussion transitions to Erika's work as a health coach. She has developed a program called Finding Food Freedom Fast, combining fasting principles with strategies for building habits and managing emotional eating.Erika concludes with final advice for new IFers: start gradually and be patient. She encourages them to find a routine that fits their lifestyle and to stay motivated by hearing others' stories and struggles. Importantly, Erika stresses that intermittent fasting should be approached as a long-term lifestyle change with an emphasis on the health benefits rather than just weight loss. She underscores the importance of consistency in one's health regimen, listening to the body's needs, and finding food freedom through empowered choices.Get Gin's books at: https://www.ginstephens.com/get-the-books.html. Listen to the full episode here: https://youtu.be/nncEWmQFiSo?si=GanDDq9g0w1qDtE4 There's a common belief that weight loss is simply about "calories in, calories out" - but according to Dr. Jason Fung, this is actually false and misleading information. In this bonus episode of the Habits and Hustle podcast, I talk with the author of The Obesity Code, a renowned expert on obesity and intermittent fasting, who explains that there is much more to gaining or losing weight than just the number of calories consumed. It's not only about the energy in the food, but critically, it's about what your body does with that energy. We dive into the complex role of hormones and common myths around calories to make a compelling case for why we need to look beyond overly-simplistic "eat less, move more" advice to understand obesity and weight loss. Dr. Jason Fung is a New York Times-bestselling author of many books including The Obesity Code and The Diabetes Code. He completed medical school at the University of Toronto and a fellowship in nephrology at UCLA. He is the co-founder of The Fasting Method, a program to help people lose weight and reverse type 2 diabetes naturally with intermittent fasting. What We Discuss: "Calories in, calories out" overly simplistic Body stores or burns calories based on hormones Different foods have different hormonal effects Insulin drives fat storage; spiked by certain foods Protein: insulin and satiety effects Processed carbs especially fattening Foods' hormonal impacts key, not just calories …and more! But if you're looking for support from a community of like-minded IFers, we are here for you at ginstephens.com/community. Carter is a musician and a music teacher. He was a kid of the 90s and early 2000s, and grew up with lots of processed foods always around. He remembers always being self-conscious about his weight and his stomach. When he went off to college, his weight began to go up even more, until he eventually found himself at 280 pounds. In 2015 while he was working on his Masters degree, Carter decided it was time to take control of his weight. He was able to get below 200 pounds through a great deal of hard work. His routine included extensive meal planning, heavy workouts, and yoga, but eventually, this intense lifestyle became unsustainable. Meeting his husband in 2017 added significant changes to his life, including a reduction in his commitment to workouts, leading to weight gain.During the pandemic, Carter experienced the same shifts many did—losing access to yoga classes and transitioning to virtual teaching. Despite these challenges, he adapted and maintained work continuity. Eventually, he found himself back up to around 260 pounds. He had a wake-up call that led to him quitting drinking permanently, and that also began his quest to better health. He felt he needed to “cleanse” his body, and that led him down a YouTube rabbit hole that took him to the concept of autophagy and fasting. He started intermittent fasting seriously after reading Dr. Jason Fung's The Obesity Code and Gin's book, Delay, Don't Deny, both of which profoundly influenced him. His 2023 New Year's Resolution was to incorporate a daily eating window, which has led to slow and steady weight loss ever since. He is down to 185 pounds and wears size 32/30 pants these days. Carter's personal gains from intermittent fasting have included improved posture, fewer ear infections, increased energy levels, and a revived passion for gardening. His mother has joined him in intermittent fasting, shedding approximately 40 pounds, and his husband also adopted an intermittent fasting lifestyle, losing about 20 pounds.Carter discussed the importance of setting a good example rather than persuading others to try intermittent fasting. His journey emphasized finding sustainable routines by integrating fasting with other pillars of health like exercise, sleep, and mental well-being.Closing the episode, Carter shares advice for beginners, suggesting they start with a manageable eating window. He emphasizes the importance of patience and gradual improvements over time. He encourages listeners to view fasting as an essential but previously overlooked component of health that, when balanced with diet, exercise, and sleep, can create a positive feedback loop leading to overall well-being. Carter's story underlines that making gradual, sustainable changes can pave the way for long-lasting health improvements.Get Gin's books at: https://www.ginstephens.com/get-the-books.html. Good news! But if you're looking for support from a community of like-minded IFers, we are here for you at ginstephens.com/community. Amanda is a neonatologist who works in the NICU. Amanda shares the struggles with body image that she has had since high school, including disordered eating behaviors that led to weight loss success but were not healthy for her body or sustainable for the long term. During her college and medical training years, and the early years of parenthood, she faced weight fluctuations, anxiety, and postpartum depression. Despite trying various diets throughout the years, Amanda gave up when those approaches were not sustainable, and she reached her highest weight of 306.2 pounds in 2023. Her parents had been successful with IF, following Dr. Jason Fung's approach, and they recommend IF to Amanda. Though she wasn't ready the first time she heard about it, when she started in 2023, she found intermittent fasting to be the natural and effective solution she needed. After reading Gin's book Fast. Feast. Repeat. and Dr. Jason Fung's The Obesity Code, she was ready to start fasting. Within a year, she lost 130 pounds and experienced a dramatic improvement in her health, no longer needing medications for reflux, blood pressure, depression, or anxiety.Amanda discusses the importance of focusing on long-term health rather than falling for fad diets and restrictive eating plans. She highlights the value of consistency, self-compassion, and patience in her journey. Both Gin and Amanda reflect on the simplicity and natural effectiveness of intermittent fasting compared to other marketed weight loss programs. They emphasize the importance of not reverting to old habits and maintaining a lifestyle that supports long-term health and well-being.To wrap up, Amanda shares numerous non-scale victories she achieved, such as better physical comfort on airplanes, increased mobility, and a sense of strength through exercise. Her final advice to those starting their intermittent fasting journey is to read Fast. Feast. Repeat. and understand the science behind fasting. Amanda emphasizes the significance of consistency, self-compassion, and patience, encouraging listeners to be kind to themselves as they embrace this new lifestyle for improved health and well-being.Get Gin's books at: https://www.ginstephens.com/get-the-books.html. I am delighted to reconnect with Dr. Jason Fung today. We last connected in October 2020 for Episode 121. Dr. Fung is a nephrologist and a prominent figure in the intermittent fasting and low-carb space. He has made significant contributions as a founding member of The Fasting Method with his evidence-based guidance on weight loss and blood glucose management through low-carb diets and intermittent fasting. He has written several books, including The Obesity Code, The Complete Guide to Fasting, The Diabetes Code, and The Cancer Code. In our discussion today, we look at the forecast for metabolic health in 2024, exploring how the growth of the diabetes population relates to the effects of the pandemic and addressing the conflict of interest with organizations like the ADA and registered dieticians. Dr. Fung shares some of his biggest frustrations, including the shallow and myopic thinking amongst those focusing on calories in and calories out, and we get into various facets of metabolic health, from the nuanced influences of gender, puberty, perimenopause, and menopause to hedonistic eating, sarcopenia, bio-individuality, and therapeutic fasting. Dr. Fung also shares his perspective on GLP-1s, shiftwork, supplements, and more. Join us for valuable insights on various aspects of metabolic health and how they impact our well-being. IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN How the influence of food companies has led dieticians and diabetes associations to focus on moderation instead of a balanced diet Dr. Fung shares his frustration with the lack of progress in addressing the diabetes issue How hormones impact weight gain and hunger Why does focusing on calories in and out not provide the solution to weight loss? How intermittent fasting can help to control hormonal issues How middle-aged women need to find balance when fasting to maintain muscle mass and avoid sarcopenia How intermittent fasting can lead to increased strength despite losing muscle mass What causes shift workers to gain weight? Nearly one in 10 Americans has Type 2 diabetes, and globally, more than 25 percent of people have nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), based on studies from the past ten years. Both diseases are largely caused by eating excess sugar, namely glucose and fructose. How do these sugars impact the body differently? In which foods are they silently lurking in high amounts? Optimistically, both Type 2 diabetes and NAFLD can be reversed, says Dr. Jason Fung, best-selling author of “The Obesity Code” and “The Diabetes Code.” However, many people are unaware of how much glucose or fructose is in common foods like white bread and many fruits. “Your blood glucose will go up more if you eat a slice of [white] bread than if you drink Coca-Cola,” Fung says. “However, it doesn't mean the Coca-Cola is better. The fructose [in coke] does many other harmful things in the body because of how it's metabolized in the liver.” How do slowly digested carbohydrates impact the body differently compared to the quickly-digested carbohydrates of white bread, Coca-Cola, and orange juice? How does food addiction resemble drug addiction, and should it be dealt with the same way? Fung reveals the foods to eat and those to avoid to improve health and stave off Type 2 diabetes and fatty liver disease. As a nephrologist, Fung specializes in treating acute and chronic kidney problems and disease, including diabetes and kidney disease. ⭕️ Watch in-depth videos based on Truth & Tradition at Epoch TV
Episode #163 In this Fasting Q&A episode, hosted by Coach Lisa Chance, Dr. Jason Fung answers questions from the TFM Community: I have a Lumen device and they talk about a fasting ‘sweet spot'. They say that if you fast for too long, then your body might get stressed and go back into carb burning, and that if you test with the Lumen every two hours, you can see this switch from carb burning to fat burning and then possibly back to carb burning – in which case it could be a good idea to stop the fast, perhaps doing more shorter fasts to maximize fat burning. Is this true? [01:57] I have heard conflicting reports about lemon in water and herbal teas breaking your fast. Do they will interfere with autophagy, if that is your main goal? [08:47] Is it known if there is an order in which fat is burned during fasting? For example, is the recently-gained fat burned first and the oldest last, or visceral vs subcutaneous? [10:52] My doctor is not discouraging fasting but dismissed it as another means of cutting calories. How can I explain concisely why fasting works but calorie reduction diets don't? [13:55] What are your thoughts on using GLP-1 drugs in conjunction with fasting? [21:25] Any suggestions for successful fasting protocols for individuals, post gastric sleeve (3 years)? [23:45] In his book The Obesity Code, Dr. Jason Fung explains that a large percentage of obesity is genetically determined. Could the outcome of the research also be explained by us getting addicted to sugar before we are born if our mother consumes sugar? [24:56] Since fish oil contains no protein and thus should not trigger mTOR, isn't it the best fasting aid as it is both and-inflammatory and calming? [29:38] I know that in some studies in the past they have showed that not having an “up day” after a full fasting day in ADF would lead to a decrease in BMR. Do we still believe this to be true? If I did a 48-hour fast, ate one meal, and then fasted for 24 hours right after, and it wasn't difficult, am I ultimately decreasing my BMR? Today, I'm fortunate to welcome Dr. Jason Fung for the fifth time. Jason Fung, MD, was born in 1973 and trained in Los Angeles and Toronto as a kidney specialist. He founded The Fasting Method (TheFastingMethod.com) to provide evidence-based advice for weight loss and managing blood sugars, focusing on low carbohydrate diets and intermittent fasting. In this episode, Dr. Jason Fung emphasizes that fasting should not be followed by binge eating, as it negates the benefits of the fast. The purpose of fasting is to allow the body to use its stored calories, such as glucose and fat, which is beneficial for weight loss and managing type 2 diabetes. If one consumes excessive calories after fasting, the body will store these extra calories as fat, thereby hindering progress. Tune in as Dr. Fung explains certain foods stimulate GLP-1, a hormone that helps regulate appetite. Protein-rich foods make you feel full quickly, while bitter foods like arugula, dandelion greens, ginger, and spices such as turmeric, fenugreek, and cinnamon can suppress appetite. However, while pharmaceutical interventions targeting GLP-1 can be powerful, they are not always ideal due to potential side effects, such as nausea and loss of enjoyment in food. Andrea is a medical transcriptionist who works for an internal medicine practice. Andrea spent years battling with her weight, trying various diets from Atkins to Weight Watchers in an on-again, off-again struggle that felt endless. Despite avoiding more extreme measures like weight loss injections, she remained entangled in the relentless yo-yo cycle of dieting. At the age of 45, a significant shift in perspective came when she started working at a doctor's office. It was here that she encountered numerous patients much younger than herself, already suffering from health issues typically associated with an older population. This was a powerful wake-up call for Andrea. Determined not to fall into the same trap, she decided to not only take control of her weight but also to maintain a healthier lifestyle to ensure her future years would be vibrant and robust. She started intermittent fasting in July of 2020 after hearing a doctor in her practice recommend The Obesity Code to his patients. Andrea found initial success with intermittent fasting, but window creep happened over the years, and in January of 2023, she tightened her window back up. She has gotten to a very healthy range for her body, feeling relaxed about her weight for the first time ever. At the age of 57, Andrea loves and appreciates her body and is no longer interested in stressing out about the scale number. As the podcast concludes, Andrea offers sound advice to those new to intermittent fasting, advising patience and starting slow to integrate this lifestyle change smoothly. She stresses the importance of self-compassion and accepting one's body.Get Gin's books at: http://www.ginstephens.com/get-the-books.html, including her latest bestseller 28-Day Fast Start Day-By-Day, the Ultimate Guide to Starting (or Restarting) Your Intermittent Fasting Lifestyle so it Sticks, New York Times Bestseller, Fast. Rachel Awad is an American university administrator who is living in Egypt, and has been living in the Middle East for over 30 years. She has been overweight for most of her life. In 2008 Rachel (who is only 5'3”) reached her all-time highest weight of close to 300lbs. She managed to lose about 40 lbs with a popular commercial weight loss program (about calorie restriction). She eventually started regaining the weight she lost. When she was close to her starting weight again, Rachel learned about Intermittent Fasting and Michael Moseley's 5:2 plan. This was in 2014. She followed that for a few years, and was successful in losing weight. In 2017, after reading Jason Fung's The Obesity Code and Gin Stephen's book Delay, Don't Deny, she moved to a daily intermittent fasting approach and most importantly, to clean fasting. Rachel became a huge proponent of IF, guiding many friends to explore fasting, and becoming a moderator on some very large IF groups on FB. This is where she first met Graeme, and then read “The Fasting Highway” about his own IF journey. She has been an active member of The Fasting Highway FB group since its early days. This is the 3rd time that Rachel has been a guest on the TFH podcast, previously in Episodes 6 and 152. She discusses her own journey with IF, how ADF can be a very helpful tool when used correctly and for the right reasons, and the importance of knowing what's in your IF toolbox. She works for a health insurance company in customer service. Tami opens up about her lifelong struggles with weight and self-image, recounting her early feelings of not fitting in due to her height. She tried a variety of dieting and weight loss methods over the years—including low-fat diets, Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, the South Beach diet, and others. Despite experiencing some success, particularly with Weight Watchers where she shed 100 pounds, Tami faced emotional and physical challenges that she fought to overcome for years.Tami stumbled upon Jason Fung's "The Obesity Code" and discovered the 16:8 intermittent fasting method in 2019, marking a pivotal change in her health trajectory. Despite initial hurdles with intermittent fasting, such as not losing any weight, Tami saw substantial improvements in her appetite control and finally was able to comfortably maintain her weight.Shifting from 16:8 to a three-to-five hour window most days allowed her to finally lose weight, and she is currently at a weight similar to her high school weight. She has continued to see progress in her well-being, celebrating non-scale victories like relief from carpal tunnel pain, hip pain, and silent reflux. Tami embraced the value of making an irrevocable commitment to herself, which is advice she heard from a past IF Stories guest.Tami offers advice to beginners on their fasting journey: push through the initial difficulties, learn to tune into your body's needs over time, and remain patient and committed. By understanding and adjusting to new information and the tools we have available to us, Tami believes that anyone can improve their mental and physical well-being through intermittent fasting.Get Gin's books at: http://www.ginstephens.com/get-the-books.html, including her latest bestseller 28-Day Fast Start Day-By-Day, the Ultimate Guide to Starting (or Restarting) Your Intermittent Fasting Lifestyle so it Sticks, New York Times Bestseller, Fast. Susanne shares her past struggles with weight gain following college, her numerous attempts at different diets leading to a cycle of loss and regain, and her discovery of IF which introduced a new chapter of health and wellness into her life.Susanne describes her earlier days trying various diets like Weight Watchers and low-carb, each providing temporary success but ultimately failing due to constant cravings and an unenjoyable restriction. It wasn't until 2018, upon reading The Obesity Code by Jason Fung, that Susanne decided to try IF, quickly finding her stride with the Delay, Don't Deny approach and the clean fast.Susanne has settled into a hybrid approach, with one down day each week. Her down day routine includes black coffee in the morning and water for the day, while her up days are more relaxed. She prefers the full fast down day option because she doesn't want to count calories, something she admits she is triggered by.Gin points out the essential nature of personalizing IF to suit individual preferences and lifestyles, affirming that there isn't one universally superior fasting method. We each get to tweak it till it's easy!Susanne has returned to her college clothing size and has managed to maintain her weight through a combination of discipline and a joyful approach to IF, highlighting the importance of enjoyment over willpower. Susanne‘s advice: Susanne emphasizes the power of mindset and self-talk in achieving success as an intermittent faster. She underscores how important it is to enjoy the process and make the lifestyle both sustainable and pleasurable. Her parting advice is for others to be patient, stay positive, and find joy in the journey, advocating for a gentle approach when sharing IF with the curious, reinforcing that it's all about helping those who are ready to embrace the change.Get Gin's books at: http://www.ginstephens.com/get-the-books.html, including her latest bestseller 28-Day Fast Start Day-By-Day, the Ultimate Guide to Starting (or Restarting) Your Intermittent Fasting Lifestyle so it Sticks, New York Times Bestseller, Fast. In this episode, I summarise two books that I recently read on the causes of Obesity. The Obesity Code written by Dr Jason Fung and Ultraprocessed People written by Chris van Tulleken. The two books play into each other with the obesity theme being central to both of them. This made it all the more interesting for me. Obesity is not a result of a person's inability to control oneself, it is a result of food being engineered in such a fashion that it promotes higher consumption. People who fall prey to this are the victims and not the villains. Podcast DescriptionIn the current industrial food environment, most of the foods that are marketed to us are pretty far removed from whole foods. Recent research indicates that over 70% of the food supply in the U.S. is ultra-processed. Many ultra-processed foods (UPFs) contain little fiber and are high in added sugars, meaning they are rapidly digested, and cause blood glucose levels to rise quickly. Our ancient brains and bodies are struggling to catch up with this new food environment, filled with modern conveniences that we love the taste of. But the impact of a diet high in UPFs goes beyond negative physical health outcomes such as a heightened risk of diabetes, obesity, and cancer. It may also have a significant impact on the health of your brain. In today's episode, I explore two ways we can reduce our consumption of UPFs to improve blood glucose management, reduce cravings, and lower the risk of disease. To read the full show notes, click here.References Join my email list here so you're first in line for the latest content.Find out more about “The Glucose Goddess Method” (2023) and “Glucose Revolution” (2022) by Jessie InchauspéLearn more about “Obesity Code” by Dr.Jason FungAudio Stamps03:10 - We discover why you don't need to be diabetic or pre-diabetic for blood sugar management to be a concern for you.05:32 - We find out how reducing processed foods in our diet can help to bring down insulin levels.09:12 - Dr. Rentea introduces her first strategy for eating less processed food.11:41 - Dr. Rentea talks about her second strategy for eating less processed food.12:15 - We hear some suggested resources to support you with blood glucose management.13:33 - Dr. Rentea tells us why we should resist the urge to do a radical overhaul.Quotes4:19 - “One of the best ways that I know to help people with this is to help them more toward an unprocessed diet.”7:42 - “We are this ancient brain and body, but we're in this really modern world. And so your brain, your body, your gut, your hormones…none of it has really caught up to this ultra processed food.”10:31 - “If you start with veggies first, if you start with savory first, if you balance with protein and fiber first, and then you have those other things (even if it's the same amount of crackers), you end up decreasing the spike that happens with blood sugar.”All of the information on this podcast is for general informational purposes only. Dr. Jason Fung is a Canadian nephrologist and the Author of the best-selling books The Obesity Code and The Complete Guide to Fasting. While working as a nephrologist, he noticed a direct correlation between prescribed insulin medication and weight gain in his patients. This led him to discover intermittent fasting to lower insulin and force the body to burn fat for energy. Dr. Fung is passionate about helping people overcome and reverse type 2 diabetes through intermittent fasting and a low-carb, healthy high-fat diet. Over the years, he's helped thousands of patients in fighting type 2 diabetes, losing weight, and achieving a higher quality of life and well-being. In this episode, Dr. Fung discusses why simply reducing your calorie intake will not reduce your body fat. He will also talk about the other hormones than insulin that can retain fat in the body. Dr. Fung will encourage you to repair your damaged metabolism and share the truth about type 2 diabetes, and how you can reverse it. Tune in as we chat about the falsehood of counting and cutting calories, the benefits of fasting, insulin, metabolism, type 2 diabetes, and fasting techniques. [1:49] Are You Cutting Calories? Start Fasting Instead And See The Benefits! Simply reducing your calorie intake to reduce body fat is a false belief. If you eat less, you burn less, resulting in energy expenditure going down. When you take energy in, you can burn or store it. But what you cannot do is take the stored energy out and burn it. If your insulin is high, you can't burn fat. [8:08] Do Other Hormones Besides Insulin Also Help The Body To Retain Fat? Many factors affect your insulin, but the main one is metabolism. Maintain a low level of insulin. The amount of energy is put in or taken out doesn't matter. You cannot burn body fat if your insulin level is maintained at high levels. Fasting is beneficial because it's the most effective way to lower your insulin. Some foods are more fattening than other foods. For example, even though broccoli and cookies have the same calories, cookies are more fattening than broccoli. [18:31] If You Have Damaged Metabolism, Don't Lose Hope, You Can Rebuild Your level of hunger determines how much and how frequently you eat. You are not consciously in charge of that: you can choose not to eat, but you cannot choose to feel less hungry. It's not about willpower, it's about your appetite. It's not about the calories, it's what's behind those calories. More important: question whether you store or burn the energy that comes to your body. [29:05] The Facts About Type 2 Diabetes and How to Fight It Type 2 diabetes may be controlled, but it leads to heart disease, strokes, and other complications which lead to death. Type 2 diabetes is a straightforward illness to comprehend. Your body has too much sugar and cannot store any more. As a result, it leaks into the blood. When you start measuring it in your blood, you know your sugar storage capacity has been surpassed. And this is going to generate problems. Type 2 diabetes is not a chronic and progressive disease. It is reversible. Changing diet and lifestyle is the step to reverse type 2 diabetes. Older medications such as insulin don't provide organ protection. New medications help to remove sugar from the body, compared to insulin which only moves sugar around. [40:09] What Fasting Techniques Can Force Insulin Down? Find the balance between efficiency and effectiveness. If you choose something too hard, you won't do it. For starters, you could do a 16-hour fast and a two-meals-a-day plan. From there, you could gradually increase your fasting time from 16 hours to 24 and eventually into 36 hour fast, which is the most effective. Thirty-six hours fast just becomes hard because of social reasons. [53:08] Workout While Fasting: Is It Good Or Bad? Listen Here! Your body will typically decide where it will acquire its energy. Your body stores glycogen, and for most individuals, you'll practically never run out of it. When people participate in activities like marathons, you occasionally witness them depleting their glycogen reserves. Keep in mind that, with the exception of the brain, every tissue in your body may use body fat as an energy source. I am a 71-year-old retired CEO of an 84-year-old family business. I have been retired for about 15 years. My passion is to do whatever I can to spread the word about the incredible health benefits of intermittent fasting. I have lost about 50 pounds on my own customized plan along with intermittent fasting. I have maintained my weight loss for about 15 years. In my retirement, I kept the title CEO, but changed the description to the “Chief Eating Officer.” I believe everyone should be the “Chief Eating Officer” of their own mind, body, and spirit. I discovered intermittent fasting on December 20, 2020, when I read “Fast, Feast, Repeat,” by Gin Stephens. It was great timing because I was looking for a sustainable way to maintain my 40-pound weight loss. I also read “The Obesity Code” by Jason Fung, “The Fasting Highway” by Graeme Currie, and listened to numerous other podcasts. Becoming an intermittent faster was one of the easiest decisions I have ever made. I adopted a 20-24 hour fasting window during the first week and have been practicing it for almost 2.5 years. I have lost an additional 10 pounds with intermittent fasting and have successfully maintained the 50-pound weight loss. I was CEO of my familybusiness for 35 years. When I made my irrevocable commitment to lose weight I wrote my own plan. I used the CEO skills I had used my entire adult life. I taught myself how to eat, how not to eat, how to think, and how to use tiny habits to correct all 17 bad habits I acquired during the first 10years of my life. As the Compassionate Chief Eating Officer, I created my mission, vision, and my core values. My Mission is to get people out of “Diet Hell” forever. My Vision is customized permanent weight loss and lifestyle plans for all. My 10 Core Values are to be calm, creative, imaginative, positive, kind, truthful, and to have belief, commitment determination and patience. I want to do everything I can to help people get healthy and reach their unlimited human potential. Today, I am blessed to have here with me Temple Stewart. She is a Registered Dietitian, Certified Personal Trainer, and Health Behavior Change Specialist. Temple played D1 soccer at the University of Tennessee Martin, which is where she received a degree in Dietetics. She completed an internship at the VA Medical Center in Bay Pines, FL. Temple currently works and lives in St. Petersburg, FL with her husband and their two poodles, Axel and Rowdie. Throughout college Temple developed a very unhealthy relationship with food and began using food rules or diets as punishment or for comfort. This behavior propelled Temple into learning all she could about food and how impacts our bodies, ultimately making her choose to become a Registered Dietitian. Throughout the process, Temple began to learn how to eat for health and how to develop a healthy relationship with food. Along the road, she was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis and PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), furthermore increasing her interest in treating the body with nutrition. In this episode, Temple talks about her journey to health and reversing the symptoms of both PCOS and Hashimotos. As a trained dietitian, Temple reveals why her education around food wasn't exactly the best information. Plus, Temple dives into her favorite health hacks, including the carnivore diet, intermittent fasting, carb cycling, and lab work. Tune in as we chat about how much protein you should be eating, how keto will help with fertility, and tips for asking your doctor about prescribing a CGM. [02:15] Temple Speaks About Her Journey To Health In college, Temple was losing hair, and she was gaining weight rapidly. Plus, she had no menstrual cycles. When she went to the doctor, they put her on birth control. After moving to Florida to become a dietitian, Temple's health worsened. Temple was doing exactly what they taught her in dietitian school: eat less, move more, more vegetables, and less fat. Eventually, Temple was diagnosed with both PCOS and Hashimotos. [06:10] How Temple Realized Her Dietitian Training Was Garbage Temple read The Obesity Code: https://www.amazon.com/The-Obesity-Code-Dr-Jason-Fung-audiobook/dp/B01MRKEO0U/benazadi-20 After reading The Obesity Code, she went down a rabbit hole with tons of other resources. She started helping patients in the hospital lower their carbs. Temple did a research study; every single person got off their medications and lost weight after lowering their carbs. [08:30] It Took Three Months For Temple To Reverse Her Hashimoto's Symptoms Hashimoto's thyroiditis is essentially an autoimmune disease. A lot of times, Hashimoto's and PCOS go hand-in-hand. Keto can be so helpful because it takes away a lot of the triggers of the immune system. Through nutrition, Temple was able to get rid of all her symptoms. [16:00] If You're Starting To Change Your Diet, Try Carnivore Everyone can benefit from a carnivore lifestyle. A lot of people are suffering from something and don't realize it until they go carnivore. If you want to get into ketosis quickly, try carnivore for a couple of days. People who are hitting plateaus can definitely benefit from a carnivore diet. [16:55] Insulin Resistance Is Actually Weight Loss Resistance What's causing the weight to stay on your body could be due to insulin. There are people who have tried every diet in the book. For the most part, people end up lowering calories. However, nothing will work when insulin resistance is up. Weight loss is typically a symptom; it usually comes after you heal your body. [18:45] Strategies For Overcoming A Keto Weight Loss Stall A lot of times, carb cycling can be effective. Complex carbs can help women depending on where they are in their cycle. Temple will also suggest switching up your intermittent fasting routine. The same thing goes for exercise – sometimes you are doing too much! Plus, don't forget to look at your sleep and your stress. Lastly, you may need to get labs and see what's going on with your hormones. [21:30] Why Temple Loves To Implement Intermittent Fasting Intermittent fasting is great for weight loss, aging, and protecting the brain. Many people do well fasting for 16-hours and having an 8-hour eating window. A 72 hour fast done quarterly can reset your immune system. Temple will encourage her clients to do what works for them. Fasting during breakfast is very popular. However, many women do better when they fast during dinner time. With intermittent fasting, the sky is the limit. [25:15] How Much Protein Temple Will Recommend For Her Clients Temple recommends .8 or .9 grams per lb of body weight for a woman. People who are snacking could stop if they meet their protein needs. Most women are undereating protein. The recommendations out there on protein are so low! [30:10] Why Protein Is So Satiating and Filling To The Human Body Protein is the building block for everything. It's really the only macronutrient that you cannot live without. Plus, protein is extremely satiating. It's really hard to eat an exorbitant amount of food when you're eating protein. [32:35] Why The Scale Is Setting You Up For Failure Women can fluctuate eight pounds just in terms of hormonal water weight gain when they cycle through their period. People get so attached to the scale because society values thinness. Instead, you should judge based on how you feel. Think about how your bowel movements are, what your skin feels like, how your hair is growing. The scale should be way down the list of importance when it comes to health. [37:00] Tips On Speaking With Your Doctor About Your Health First, Temple says you need to find the right doctor. Usually, a doctor can get you a CGM. Naturopaths and more holistic homeopathic physicians should be able to help you. Tell them you are interested in how food impacts your blood glucose levels. Terry was also prediabetic and ready for his life to change. In researching a way to lose weight, Terry found The Obesity Code and later, Fast Feast Repeat. He began with a 16:8 protocol and IF immediately felt easy to him.Terry has lost more than 50 pounds. Our guest today is Dr. Jason Fung, a Toronto-based nephrologist, and the best-selling author of “The Obesity Code,” “The Diabetes Code,” and “The Cancer Code.” Jason is best known for his success in combining a low-carb diet with intermittent fasting to help thousands of overweight patients reverse their type 2 diabetes, lose weight, and improve their metabolic health. Jason is the author of the blog “The Fasting Method” and the co-founder of the Intensive Dietary Management program, an initiative that provides low-carb dietary guidance and counseling on various fasting regimes. Jason is also the co-author with Jimmy Moore of “The Complete Guide to Fasting,” which looks at the history and culture of fasting and how it helps people improve their metabolic health. In today's episode, Ken is joined by Visiting IHMC research scientist Dr. Tommy Wood and together, they and Jason discuss: How in the beginning of his practice, Jason prescribed insulin for type 2 diabetes patients. How a series of landmark studies starting in 2008 changed Jason's mind about using glucose-lowering medication for type 2 diabetes. Jason's realization that type 2 diabetes is largely a dietary disease and therefore requires a dietary solution rather than a pharmaceutical one. The origins of Jason's Dietary Management program, which counsels overweight and obese patients to follow a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet to reduce insulin. A critique of the “eat less, move more” strategy acclaimed by many obesity experts. Mark Mattson's research into the powerful impact of intermittent fasting on metabolic health and a recent paper that questioned the effectiveness of time-restricted eating when compared to daily calorie restriction. Recent research and evidence that fasting during chemotherapy may reduce the side effects of the treatment. Show notes: [00:02:25] Tommy opens the interview mentioning that Jason was born and raised in Toronto and asks what drew Jason to science as a kid. [00:03:43] Tommy mentions the irony that Jason has written several best-selling books, yet Jason was not fond of English or writing when he was in school. [00:04:53] Ken mentions that after graduating from high school, Jason stayed close to home and attended the University of Toronto, entering into medical school just after turning 19 to study internal medicine, eventually specializing in nephrology. Ken asks Jason what intrigued him about becoming a kidney specialist. [00:06:36] Tommy asks Jason what led him to go to UCLA after medical school for his specialty training in kidney disease at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. [00:07:37] Tommy mentions that Jason has been practicing clinical nephrology in Toronto since 2001, and that in those early years of his practice, Jason saw patients with type 2 diabetes and prescribed medications to keep their blood glucose low. When that didn't work, he would prescribe insulin, which is the standard medical practice. Tommy asks what Jason observed during these early years of his practice. [00:09:28] Ken mentions that in 2008, two landmark studies were published, the ACCORD study and the ADVANCE study (a summary of ADVANCE). These studies were followed by two more studies, the ORIGIN and VADT studies, all four of which demonstrated that using blood glucose-lowering medication for type 2 diabetes didn't necessarily have the expected benefits. Ken asks Jason to talk about how these studies were eye-opening for him and confirmed his own experience in treating patients. [00:16:27] Tommy explains that in 1972 Robert Atkins published the “Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution,” which shared his findings on the effectiveness of low-carb, high-fat dieting. Tommy goes on to mention that in the late 1990s, a string of Atkins-styled diet books surged in popularity, with most physicians being opposed due to the conventional wisdom that these high-fat diets would cause heart disease. As a result,

She shares that dieting and weight loss have been a major focus in her family. Her parents were always dieting, which became Sarah's focus as well. After gaining a great deal of weight, Sarah sought a different way to lose than she had her entire life and came across tapping for weight loss. Her tapping coach also shared intermittent fasting with her, and Sarah began to do some research. She read Fast Feast Repeat, The Obesity Code, and listened to the Intermittent Fasting podcast. Sarah began with 16:8, and gradually shortened her window. She doesn't focus on the scale, but how her clothes fit. Sarah's advice: “Start slow. Trust your body. Let yourself slowly work up to the fast that feels right. IF is a lifestyle, so you can be flexible.”Get Gin's books at: http://www.ginstephens.com/get-the-books.html, including Cleanish and New York Times Bestseller, Fast. Feast. This episode is brought to you by Athletic Greens, ButcherBox, and Rupa Health. Fasting has numerous proven benefits to optimize health. It can help reduce inflammation, brain fog, and insulin resistance. It can also increase energy and bone density, activate autophagy—the process of cleaning out damaged cells—and reduce the signs of aging. The food we eat has an amazing ability to heal, but the timing of when we eat or abstain from eating can also have profound impacts on our health. In today's episode, I talk with Dr. Valter Longo, Dave Asprey, and Dr. Jason Fung about the mechanisms behind fasting, why most of us can benefit from fasting, and how fasting can be a useful tool in cancer treatment. Dr. Valter Longo is an internationally recognized leader in the field of aging studies and related diseases. Valter is the author of an extraordinary book, The Longevity Diet. The culmination of 25 years of research on aging, nutrition, and disease across the globe, it provides an easy-to-understand, accessible, and implementable road map to living well longer through improved nutrition. Dave Asprey is the creator of the Bulletproof Diet and innovator of Bulletproof Coffee. Over the last two decades Dave, the “Father of Biohacking,” has worked with world-renowned doctors, researchers, scientists, and global mavericks to uncover the latest, most innovative methods, techniques, and products for enhancing mental and physical performance. Dr. Jason Fung is a physician, author, and researcher. His groundbreaking, science-based books about diabetes and obesity—The Diabetes Code, The Obesity Code, and The Complete Guide to Fasting—have sold over one million copies and challenged the conventional wisdom that diabetics should be treated with insulin. His latest book is The Cancer Code: A Revolutionary New Understanding of a Medical Mystery.
