Ci sentiamo spesso dire che “prima di amare un'altra persona, devi imparare ad amare te stessə.” A livello teorico non fa una piega, ma a livello pratico che cosa significa? “Prima” in che senso? You may have heard of the autonomic nervous system (it does things automatically without you thinking about it, like breathing and heart function). But you may have also heard of the term "fight or flight". It's when our body goes into a stress response to survive, like when that dog is chasing you down the street! Unfortunately, too many of us are stuck in this fight or flight response for too long, whether it's from running from one thing to the next, too much time on social media or negative thoughts affecting our body's ability to function and heal normally. In this episode Drs. Dan and Pascal discuss the role of the autonomic nervous system and how our health could be impacted in a negative way over time. Have more questions? Happy Satiated Saturday! Being around certain people and foods during the holidays can bring up all sorts of reactions. These family members and friends and food can be perceived as threatening to your well being and safety and so your body moves into a fight or flight response. In this state, you might find yourself trying to gain control by restricting your intake and then binging later for your body to get what it needs nutritionally. You may then find yourself stuck in a cycle of restricting and binging on food throughout the holidays which can leave you feeling even more dysregulated and disconnected. The thing is that this pattern is not really about food. It has become your way to try to feel connected and safe around people that leave you feeling unseen, unheard, and misunderstood. To break this cycle, more pauses need to occur for you to slow down and tune in to make space to feel whatever you're feeling. In this week's episode, I offer 3 somatic tools you can utilize to support you in breaking the restrict-binge cycle and stay connected and feeling safe throughout the holidays. Every woman is different. And this means that every woman needs a specific and individualized fueling plan. Registered dietitian nutritionists Kendra Miller and Tiffany Ricci specialize their focus on busy active women, especially mothers. This week, Sara interviews the duo and uncovers the tools we need to fuel our bodies better – and our families. Kendra and Tiffany explain the nuances surrounding nutrition for pre and postnatal mothers. Just as every woman is different, every pregnant woman is different, as well as every pregnancy. They give us tips for fueling while breastfeeding and lay the ground rules for understanding our own nutritional needs. Finally, the trio delves into feeding the family and how we can take the pressure off of ourselves, release ourselves from the limits of what dinner “should be,” and allow ourselves to see what dinner “can be.” Follow Kendra on Instagram @dietitiankendra Follow Tiffany on Instagram @dietitian.tiffany *** Support the Podcast *** InsideTracker: Get 20% off at http://insidetracker.com/feisty (http://insidetracker.com/feisty) *Until July 15th, take advantage of exclusive savings with 31% off your entire InsideTracker order! Summary: I discuss causes of stress and its impact on our lives, mental health, and even our brains. Living in the past or future is a coping mechanism to avoid the uncomfortable elements of the present, but it has a high cost. We know about fight or flight and the physical consequences yet many of us still just cope with it rather than implement changes that can be effective. It starts with our thinking. Listen to hear more. Hello. Welcome to episode 23, review the past, plan the future, and what about stress? I'm your host vickidawn. Today, I'd like to invite each of you to sign up for my newsletter. https://vickidawn.aweb.page/vickidawn-Newsletter21 I have discussions on my podcast topics from different perspectives and different angles, both in the blog and in the newsletter. I send them biweekly, alternating weeks with my podcast. Today's topic, review the past and plan the future, and what about stress, is a good tool nearing year-end, but it's most useful every day and let me explain. Have you ever been so preoccupied with yesterday's fight with your partner or boss that you aren't doing what needs to be done today? How about so excited for an upcoming vacation that you aren't present to your family today? That's called living in the past or future. It is distinct from review and plan. When we're reviewing and planning, that's intentional and deliberate. When we're living in the past or future, we can feel so immersed, it's almost as if we're still there, or, we're projecting ourselves to a future place that we think we want to get to. We may ruminate and replay the fight over and over in our mind or daydream and picture laying on that perfect beach. Living in the past or future is a coping mechanism. When we want to escape the present. We feel stressed or we might feel bored, or we might feel uncomfortable. We all juggle, family, home, and our commitments and we have issues or setbacks in life, in our relationships, maybe in our finances or our health. We experience these as stressful. We all know there's good stress, but I'm focusing on the stress that comes from perceiving a threat. We want to resist a perceived threat. We want to be safe of course. That resistance is what causes the stress. It is triggered, and parts of our brain where stress lives are activated. The survivor brain is made up of the brain stem, the limbic system, and parts of the left brain. Stress is only experienced when this region of the brain is activated. According to Kendra Cherry, (article “5 Surprising Ways that Stress Affects Your Brain”, https://www.verywellmind.com/surprising-ways-that-stress-affects-your-brain-2795040) experiencing chronic stress goes beyond damage to our mind and body that is generated in the fight or flight response. We've all heard a lot about that. Stress can also have a serious impact on the brain itself. Chronic stress increases mental illness like depression and anxiety because chronic stress results in long-term changes to our brains. Other negative effects include shrinking the brain size, changing its structure, killing brain cells, and hurting your memory. It would seem that with the understanding we have today on the negative effects of stress, that we would know how to - and want to - trigger the relaxation response and would use practices like meditation, breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, or yoga but do we? That's the question. I'd suggest that there is another layer. What triggers stress? We already talked about the brain activation of stress and how stress is triggered at the focus level, not being present by living in the past or the future or by our physical response in fight or flight. Stress is also triggered at the thought level. This is important because every day we have millions of, I think I say something like 90,000 thoughts a day but I could be wrong. (update: studies have previously cited around 70,000, a more recent study in 2020 cited 6,000) But it is our thought level that triggers most of our common everyday stress. The way we talk to ourselves, our judgments about ourselves, about people, places, and things that goes on under our conscious awareness - only all the time. You may think you're different but let your thinking surface and you may be surprised at what you hear. I was. Stress, fear, and anxiety are generated by the resistance that we experience to people, places, and things that our judge has an opinion on. We ramp up our reaction based on what level of drama we enjoy. Some of us - admit it - love big drama, and some of us are self-satisfied because we think our reactions are small compared to those drama Queens and that somehow, we're exempt from those consequences. That's not true. Our bodies react with the same hormones and physiological responses, increased blood pressure, heart rate and changes to digestive functioning, and potential damage to the brain itself. Whether our reaction is the drama queen size or the more quiet, all up in my head type. One of the biggest stressors is when we tell ourselves, I need X to be happy and if Y happens, I will be miserable. Because you can't guarantee success and that you'll get X, you tense up and start all sorts of maneuvers. Manipulating people, depending on how important it is to you, you may obsess over X, you plan, you strive, you devote energy and time to making sure that you get X. You may start "thinking hard." This isn't to say it's wrong to on certain outcomes, do your best to get X. The caveat is you don't need it to be happy. Therefore, you can let the stress go about needing that outcome in order to be happy. We don't think our way into happiness. If we want to be happy, we should hold both X and Y, as acceptable. That would reduce stress. If Y is a consequence we don't want to experience say, losing a job or an important relationship, then you can still find it acceptable because it may lead to a better job. You may get a well-deserved pay increase at the next job, et cetera. All of our futures are uncertain. We often aren't in touch with just how uncertain our futures are, but - even the next 10 minutes - we can't really predict what the next 10 minutes will bring. We've all had those sudden (experiences) we're driving down the road and a car hits us from the side. We're feeling fine in the morning and by evening we have the flu. Our future is uncertain. And because of that, it has as much opportunity to turn out better as it does worse. If you were able to access another part of your brain, let's label it, the Sage. T hat area your brain is located in the middle prefrontal cortex, the empathy circuitry, and parts of your right brain. When you can access that, you're better able to let stress go. This area of the brain provides clearheaded focus, intense, fierce, rigor. It's not lazy to say that it's relaxed and clearheaded, but it's also calm. Your attention is 100% in the present instead of striving and thinking hard and making it happen, you use gentle contemplation, openness, and you trust yourself to deal with whatever situations that come up. You know you have your best interest and those that you love and care about at heart, and that you will act in your and their best interest. For stress management strategy, don't try to think your way out of stress. How often do we do that on? Especially if you have a mental personality type that tends to analyze. We really like to think about it. Let me think about that. That's not the best solution. Your sage brain will have you in the present moment. To access it, try breathing exercises, meditation, massage Tai chi, or other techniques. It's common. I hear it, and I've done it - to dismiss these techniques as being over simplistic. That couldn't be further from the truth. The lie that you and I tell ourselves there is that it takes some big cure to deal with my brand of stress because it's so much bigger and difficult to control than someone else's. The truth is that the parasympathetic nervous system predominates in quiet rest and digest conditions. It affects multiple organs including the heart and lungs. It is in your best interest to access it often and especially when experiencing stress. So back to review the past and plan the future. What can you take away from today's discussion to implement? We know my show is based on small steps that you can take - small changes that can lead to a big impact in your life. This I promise you creates a huge impact. It's so worth it to spend time learning to meditate. But what is one small step you can take to consciously address your stress in a new way? Will it be meditation or breathing or one of the other techniques? Take a moment to pick one and be open to trying it out. Thank you so much for being here today. Happy Satiated Saturday!Thanksgiving is my mother's favorite holiday. She loves food, cooking, gathering, and feeding others. Like many, we have our Thanksgiving dish staples that she makes every single year. One of those is sweet potato casserole. When I met my husband, we began alternating which family we would spend Thanksgiving with. Something I started noticing is the years I would spend Thanksgiving with my husband's family, my craving for sweet potato casserole shot up. I would re-make this recipe the best I could and yet I could never quite make it the way she does. (Perhaps the missing ingredient is motherly love.) Anyways, I sat with this intense craving year after year when Thanksgiving would come around when I wasn't spending it with my mother.... In this week's episode, I will share what I learned about my sweet potato casserole craving, 3 reasons cravings increase during the holidays, and Somatic Eating™ strategies to navigating your cravings differently. Cathy Boone-Black is a hypnotist, doula, reflexologist, and a practitioner of many other modalities. It was a joy to connect with her in this episode, as we explore consciousness and the ample opportunities that exist to use it to heal. I was particularly fascinated in Cathy's work in preparing clients for surgery using hypnosis, and the fascinating benefits which are gained. Some topics we cover include: - Cathy shares her journey with panic, anxiety, and agoraphobia and her own experience using hypnosis for surgery. - What are the benefits to using hypnosis in preparation for surgery? - What is the effect of stress on the immune system? - What is the importance of shifting out of stress and anxiety in working on the emotional roots that cause so many of our destructive behaviors, such as eating disorders, smoking, and addiction? - Is hypnotism a magic bullet? How much work is required on your side when healing via hypnosis? - How does the way we handle difficulties relate to our family lineage? - How hypnotism assists Cathy in assisting childbirth as a doula. - There is no pain until it hits the brain. It is first a sensation. https://www.indianaintegrativehypnosis.com https://www.facebook.com/indianaintegrativehypnosis.com

Andrew Stess is the CEO of StessCo Consulting Group LLC, providing sales, business development, strategy, and product consulting services in the music, automotive, digital media, consumer electronics, and technology industries. Before StessCo, Andrew was the CEO and Founder of AmpliFIND Music Services, where he drove the company’s overall strategy, innovation, and growth—leading to their successful sale to Sony in just 2 years. He was also the CEO at MusicIP, where he escorted the new young startup to a proven B2B technology company with licensing deals to Disney and Memorex. Andrew has facilitated many transactions, including the sale of AllMusic to Macrovision for $85 million. He currently advises and serves on the boards of a variety of new media businesses including audiobridge, Dash Radio, Music Story, LyricFind, SPAN, Velos Mobile, and others. His focus is on helping companies grow and scale their revenue through strategic partnerships. In this episode… As a business leader, it is crucial to have an overall understanding of the business operations and all intellectual property (IP) associated with the company. You have to have the right people on board to deal with issues related to IP and ensure that the company invests in the right assets. Over the years, Andrew Stess has worked with many companies dealing with music and digital media. He has experience working with intellectual property and has seen first-hand the effects of dealing with a general attorney as opposed to a litigator or patent attorney. In one of the companies he worked with, he saw how a tough litigator helped solve an IP issue in 3 days compared to an attorney the company had previously hired. Andrew Stess, CEO of StessCo Consulting Group LLC, is Rich Goldstein's guest in this week's episode of the Innovations and Breakthroughs Podcast, where they talk about sales strategies and the benefits of working with the right patent attorney. They also talk about Andrew's consultancy work, the role of credibility in business deals, and the importance of leaders using the right investment strategies for their companies.

Almost everyone wants to be less stressed and more peaceful. Even as our modern world ramps up the external stressors, we can learn to make ourselves calm and relaxed. The Buddha said, “there is no happiness higher than peace”. This episode guides us through a simple process to become more peaceful and to de-stress. Mindfulness Practice to De-stress Aspire to become a calm and peaceful person, even in challenging situations. Try to be mindful of whether you’re feeling calm. Notice when you start to feel tense. Calm yourself. When you start to feel tension or stress, turn toward calming yourself—rather than doing anything to affect the situation. This is vital. When you notice tension and stress, start breathing deeply from the diaphragm, feeling your stomach expand. Or, if possible, close your eyes and begin a brief breathing meditation (see below). Breathe deeply and say to yourself “calm” “relaxed”. Try to tune your body to these feelings...calm...relaxed. Continue this Diaphragmatic breathing or a breathing meditation until you feel relaxed. This might take only a minute or it might take much longer. Remember the world is empty and dreamlike. Put a little smile on your face. Try to have fun and find joy in things. Keep trying this mindfulness practice and calming technique whenever you need it. You’ll get better at with practice, and eventually you will be able to tame your mind and be calm all day. Part 2 Daily Meditation Ideally, meditate every morning. You can do the simple breathing meditation or any meditation you’d like. If you are new to meditating daily, you can meditate for only a few minutes. Or you can meditate for only as long as it takes your body and mind to enter a more peaceful state. Sometimes you might not be able to move your mind to a more relaxed state; no worries, just meditate anyway. Take the seat. Putting effort to begin the day in a state of peace will help you be mindful of peacefulness and help you stay relaxed. Let the experiences of life dissolve into your peaceful state. Think of your world as empty, dreamlike. Keep a little smile on your face. Enjoy everything you can. There is no fire like lust No misfortune like hate, No suffering like the aggregates And no happiness higher than peace. —Buddha, The Dhammapada A Simple Breathing Meditation Sit with your back straight and your shoulders dropped and relaxed. You can put your hands in the mudra of meditative equipoise. To do this, place your hands in your lap with your palms facing upward. Rest your right hand in your left. Touch your thumbs, forming a bridge. Breathe through your nostrils. Breathe deeply, from your diaphragm. Observe the sensation of your breath at your nostrils. Instead of paying attention to thoughts, allow your only thought to be watching the breath. Like watching the water lapping at the shore, calm the mind by watching the gentle rise and fall of the breath at your nostrils. When you exhale, really feel yourself relaxing...deeper and deeper with every exhalation. When your mind wanders, without judging yourself, bring it back to the breath. References Buddha. Is it possible keto actually caused this to happen? Hi Jimmy and Dr. Will, I’m having a reaction to the keto diet that I think you may find interesting and can chime in with a few thoughts for me about it. Although I am experiencing quite a few benefits eating this way, it appears the ketogenic approach just isn’t working for my blood glucose levels. I've been eating keto for 5 weeks averaging around 26g total carbs each day, 70g protein, and 220g fat. This is tracked closely by a dietitian and my blood ketones which are measured by a finger prick are consistently above .5 mmol and usually averages around 1. However, my fasting blood glucose hovers around 200 and seems to be steadily increasing. Here's the thing: I’m not diabetic. My fasting blood glucose before keto was 93 and my A1c was 5.5. Pre-keto, while I was eating just low carb with about 70-100g/day of carbohydrates, my insulin levels were low at 1.2. It's possible that going keto has exposed an underlying problem, but it seems to me that it's also possible that keto caused the problem I’m now having with my blood sugar levels and that the diet just doesn't work for me. I'm really trying to figure out which one of these it is. Any assistance you can give about this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for this podcast and keep up the great work! David AND Hi Jimmy and Will, I am having with my morning fasted blood sugar readings in the 120s and 130s and sometimes as high as in the 180s. Two weeks ago, I was put on 1500mg of Metformin and a ketogenic diet with regular periods of fasting for 18 hours a day. So far I’ve lost 14 pounds, but this blood sugar thing is frustrating for me. I hope you have some answers for me. Thank you, From a very stressed out Tony KEY QUOTE: “If you’re going to fast, begin with a ketogenic diet because keto will cause you to be satiated and fasting will happen naturally.” – Jimmy Moore – STUDY: HIIT fights insulin resistance in women at risk of type 2 diabetes 1. Why am I experiencing an increased amount of gas since adopting a ketogenic diet? Hey Jimmy and Will, I have been eating ketogenic for about three months and while I feel pretty good overall, I have encountered a few issues that seem to be sticking around. I have been experiencing dry skin, which is very unusual in the middle of a humid summer in upstate New York. I have also been having some digestive issues that show up as gas. I do eat very healthy with high quality fats, including grass-fed and pastured meats and eggs, unrefined coconut oil, olive oil, ghee, avocados, coconut milk, coconut butter, and some nuts and seeds. But I know I am experiencing more gas than I should and I'm not sure what may be causing this. I don't eat any grains, dairy, or legumes, but something is disturbing my digestion in the worst way. Also, I’ve noticed my acne has been consistently been pretty bad as well since going keto. I would greatly appreciate any insights you can give me into these issues. Thanks for your help! Jerry 2. What can I do about the unrelenting constipation I am feeling while on a ketogenic diet? Hey guys, I’ve been eating low-carb, then keto going on five years now and I love it. But biggest side effect that I’ve experienced is unrelenting constipation. When I ate the SAD diet, I was regular everyday. But as soon as I go low-carb/keto, it's a big problem. I consume avocados, greens, and/or broccoli everyday. Additionally, I eat up to 3 tablespoons of coconut oil and it doesn't seem to help at all. A famous ketogenic doctor told me to take milk of magnesia and I tried up to 3-4 teaspoons at night and still not regular. Yes, I definitely go more often when I take that, but I don’t want to have to take a whole bottle every single week. I drink plenty of water with up to 3 teaspoons of sea salt in it. I also supplement with magnesium malate since the citrate version creates a more laxative effect. So it doesn’t appear that I'm dehydrated or lacking electrolytes. The only thing I can think of that it could possibly be is stress. I'm not overly stressed but do have my moments. Please help me figure out how to get this constipation under control while eating keto. What is it about the low-carb, high-fat, ketogenic diet that improves skin health so much? Dear Jimmy & Dr. Will, First of all, welcome to Dr. Will who I think brings a fresh new perspective that I like to Keto Talk. On his first episode, Will mentioned as an aside that eating keto can be very good for the skin. This resonated with me because I have seen that happening in my own ketogenic journey. I used to experience super dry skin prior to eating keto using expensive moisturizers and even those didn’t help me. After 3-4 months of eating keto, I noticed my skin was super moist without any moisturizers…even when I am getting lots of sun at the beach. Amazing! Hi Jimmy and Dr. Cole, I have been listening to your podcasts for many years, Jimmy, but I have never heard the answer to the following question—Why do I never feel any hunger while eating keto? I will feel a little dizzy sometimes and even have difficulty thinking from time to time, but never any hunger. I am reading your book Keto Clarity to learn more of the nuances of nutritional ketosis and to help me understand what is going on in my body better. This lack of hunger thing is driving me crazy trying to figure it out. Keep up the good work. You are making a difference in this world and for that, I thank you. Lorna JIMMY AND DR. I’m looking forward to hearing a lot more from you two! I have a quick question for you guys to address that I think impacts a lot of us Ketonians: Is there a life insurance company that understands the new way to look at lipid panels and related lab markers that give more credence to things like HDL, triglycerides, hsCRP, lower small LDL-P, lower ApoB, and more? It seems most of these companies prevent an otherwise healthy person from obtaining proper levels of life insurance unless their LDL-C and total cholesterol are in line with conventional thinking which we know is an incomplete picture. Can the fat you eat on a ketogenic diet make hot flashes and swelling worse just like carbs do? Hey Jimmy and Will, I’m a regular listener to Keto Talk and love what you are doing here. My question for you guys is about whether the fat I’m eating on my ketogenic diet is making my hot flashes worse and my fingers swell. I’m 57 years old, weigh 130 pounds, and am addicted to sugar. But when I replace sugar with fat, all of these things seem to happen in my health. Is this normal? Maybe I need to cut my fat and red meat consumption and eat more vegetables. Do you guys think this is a good idea? Is eating more vegetables on my ketogenic diet the answer to my adrenal fatigue that seems to be halting my weight loss progress? Dear Jimmy and Dr. Cole, I have been on a ketogenic lifestyle since May and have not lost a single pound. I keep my carbs below 20g and went to see a ketogenic-friendly physician since I thought I was perhaps eating too much fat. In doing more research into what I might be dealing with, I suspected adrenal fatigue that has led to exhaustion and lab tests have confirmed this to be true. My keto doctor requires me to eat a lot more vegetables in my diet, but now I’m hungry again despite showing 1.0 mmol in my blood ketones. What natural pain remedies can be used by Ketonians who would rather not take medications? Hey Jimmy and Will, I’ve been experiencing an increase in pain in my shoulders, elbows, and knees since I went keto two months ago. I’m a 62-year old male who was diagnosed with hypothyroidism four years ago by an allopathic doctor and prescribed Synthroid. I never liked the side effects of that medication, so I switched over to iodine supplements to go more natural in my treatment of this. Keto has given me great energy, no more food cravings, and has zapped out my hunger allowing me to intermittent fast for 16 hours daily. I lost 45 pounds on a traditional diet before going ketogenic and have lost another 30 pounds in the two months I’ve been keto. My goal is another 100 pounds, but I need something natural to give me pain relief while I’m on this journey. Shalom, George JIMMY AND DR. ADAM NALLY’S KETO LIVING SUPPLEMENTS KETO TALK MAILBOX – Is it normal to be sick of the dietary fat you consume on a ketogenic diet by day four of eating this way? Hey guys, I was wondering if it is normal to get sick of eating dietary fat after three days of eating keto. I absolutely love it for the first three days eating high-fat foods, but then something happens by day four when I can’t even think of eating another ketogenic meal. Is this normal and will I get over this? I really want to do this diet because of all of the health benefits and maybe lose a few pounds. But I need to know if I just need to push through the feeling I’m getting and get to the point where I will enjoy keto meals on a regular basis.
