Original airdate: January 1, 2019 Feng Shui, the study of the movement of chi, is the Chinese word for energy. It guides that energy, letting it flow freely through your home, creating a healthy balance and sense of well-being. Kim Klein says our homes are the one place on earth to which we are most energetically connected. They nourish and support us and will always mirror us. That's why we need to be mindful caretakers. Kim shares tips on how we can do this and lots more in this episode. In addition to being a Holistic Health Coach, Kim is a Certified Feng Shui Consultant, graduating in 2004 from the three-year BTB (Black Tantric Buddhist) Masters Training Program in San Francisco. During our conversation, Kim introduces us to the ancient science of Feng Shui by describing how it works and how we can benefit from using its wisdom to correct the flow of this energy into and through our space. She provides simple tools and techniques in our homes and office spaces and shows us how to use Feng Shui to set our intentions for the New Year.

This episode discusses the positive and negative ways money and politics connect and the means to organize money through politics so it serves human flourishing. Democratic politics has always involved a struggle to ensure money serves people rather than people serving money. The paradox is that, to do so, democratic politics necessities not just organizing people, but also organizing, or better, re-organizing money. The conversation in this episode about organizing money has two sides to it. The first is how to hold dominant centers of economic power - whether in the market or the state - accountable for the use and distribution of that power. The second is how to fundraise to pay for the work of doing democratic politics in ways that are independent of patronage by either the state or the wealthy. This second aspect of the discussion focuses on the difference between 'hard' money that is raised from members, and 'soft' money that comes from grants and foundations, and the tensions between them.GuestsJanet Hirsch is a leader with the IAF affiliate One LA through her participation in her synagogue, Temple Isaiah where she is the Vice President of Social Justice and sits on the Executive Committee of the Temple Isaiah Board.  She has been involved in One LA for over 12 years, leading campaigns on public education, immigration reform, increasing access to mental health services, the expansion of the California earned income tax credit, and most recently, a Covid-19 equity vaccination pilot in South Los Angeles.  Janet was born in Zimbabwe but has lived in Los Angeles since 1987.Joe Rubio is a senior organizer with the West/Southwest Industrial Areas Foundation and supervises IAF Projects in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas where he has organized around public education, workforce training, and immigration. When Kim Klein was a nurse's aide and decided to go back to school to be an RN, she didn't realize how much different it would be. She quickly learned that being a new grad, moving straight into the OR, would prove very difficult. She left the OR after a year, only to find out that her LTC job did not give her the support that a new nurse needed. There was a question that she asked herself - am I doing the right thing by being a nurse? Kim ended up back in the OR as a circulator. Kim experienced, first hand, what it means for nurses to eat their young. She also had to deal with surgeons that didn't trust her as a new person to the team. Kim decided that she would turn that around by mentoring the new nurses that came into the OR and reminding them that they were doing a good job - something that she says nurses don't hear enough.Kim dealt with some physical symptoms from her burnout and turned to functional medicine when she couldn't get answers from her conventional healthcare team. That experience led her to work on her Functional Medicine certification. She now hopes to help others get answers through her knowledge of functional medicine and experience as a resilient nurse.Tips for Nurses What is your Why? What steps can you take to get to the point that makes you happy? If you start to notice the signs of burnout, take a step back, and take care of yourself. Stick in there, but stick up for yourself. Don't let people walk all over you.
