Beautiful, sandy beaches meet jaw-dropping mountains and forests as we travel to the “Marvelous City,” Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, to talk with Silvia Albuquerque, Regional Director of Rio de Janeiro Venues for GL events. Silvia gives us an overview of the three venues she oversees – Jeunesse Arena (largest arena in Brazil and main location for events in Rio), Riocentro (biggest convention center in Latin America), and Lagune Barra Hotel (306 room hotel). We talk about her start with GL events right before the Rio Olympics, what it was like hosting Olympic games, and how her role within the company has evolved over time. Ever wondered how the pandemic affected live events in Brazil? She shares how they adapted during the pandemic and have found new ways to expand their business, including supporting more local and regional acts and hosting different sizes of events, and how that forced flexibility led to their most successful year ever in 2022. Silvia tells us about her career journey, from her first job out of college with Sony Music to time with a publisher and GroupOn to her current role in live events, and how collaborations and unique events made her fall in love with the live events industry. Enjoy this informative, fun episode that takes you inside what makes Rio de Janeiro such a special city that artists look forward to visiting and locals love to call home.Silvia Albuquerque: LinkedIn | EmailGL events: Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

BONUS EPISODE (Part 3 of 3) – Waste not, want not, right? We've all heard the phrase “zero waste,” but what does that mean for venues and how can they be zero waste facilities? Venues are surge facilities, with thousands of patrons purchasing food and merchandise that have byproducts that need to go somewhere. For our final part of our Earth Week Series, we're joined again by Brianna Treat, Director of Sustainability at Climate Pledge Arena and the Seattle Kraken, for a chat all about zero waste – which boils down to diverting at least 90% of your waste away from a landfill. How is that possible and how do you get there? Brianna explains Climate Pledge Arena's strategies and how they are working to hit an even more challenging goal of diverting 95% of their waste. From color-coding waste bags to doing trash audits and sorting, discussing waste options with haulers to understanding what materials are sold – we roll up our sleeves and get our hands dirty talking about tips for venues to divert more waste away from landfills. While 90% may not be possible for some, this episode is full of creative solutions and interesting strategies that could be deployed at any venue, no matter where currently are with their sustainability efforts."We don't need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions of people doing it imperfectly." - Anne Marie BonneaBrianna Treat: LinkedIn | EmailClimate Pledge Arena: Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

BONUS EPISODE (Part 2 of 3) – Now that we're a little more versed in venue sustainability, let's dive a bit deeper and learn all about carbon. For Part 2 of our Earth Week Series we're joined again by Brianna Treat, Director of Sustainability at Climate Pledge Arena and the Seattle Kraken, and we're talking all things carbon! What is it? How do you track it? What does carbon look like in a venue? We dig into all these questions and more, and hear all about what Scope 1, 2, and 3 carbon emissions are. Brianna explains Climate Pledge Arena's commitment to being net zero carbon by 2040 - ten years ahead of the Paris Agreement. We discuss the Zero Carbon Certification, the most stringent carbon certification, which is through the International Living Future Institute. From renewable energy, to tracking merchandise and food, to offsetting performer and fan travel – we get into the weeds on carbon counting. Tracking and measuring data is not only the best first step, but a way to highlight the importance of sustainability to owners and C-suite executives.“Overall, becoming a carbon-neutral country would involve changes in our behaviour, but these are modest compared with the changes that will be forced upon us if we do nothing.” - Caroline LucasBrianna Treat: LinkedIn | EmailClimate Pledge Arena: Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

BONUS EPISODE (Part 1 of 3) – It's Earth Week, which means it's the perfect time to dig into the impact venues and the live event industry have on our beautiful planet. As we discuss innovations and solutions around venue sustainability, we take an inside look at a venue which is prioritizing this on a level never seen before – Climate Pledge Arena. For Part 1 of our Earth Week Series, we chat with Brianna Treat, the Director of Sustainability at Climate Pledge Arena and the Seattle Kraken, to hear all about the Climate Pledge Arena story – what set them on the path of prioritizing green initiatives and how they continue to face and find solutions to solve challenges. We hear about what is involved with being a part of Amazon's Climate Pledge, and what it means to be a Director of Sustainability. This newly reopened venue (renovated from a historic arena built in 1962 for the World's Fair) not only strives to be a leader in venue sustainability, but also to blaze the trail to make it easier for all venues to prioritize and initiate green initiatives. This is a great first step in our series to learn some terms and hear about the many ways venues can be more sustainable."We shouldn't just sit idly by on the sidelines, waiting for other people to develop the technologies and the business models that can help decarbonize our operations.” - Daniel GrossBrianna Treat: LinkedIn | EmailClimate Pledge Arena: Facebook | Twitter | Instagram

We covered the Innovator's Dilemma with Matthew Christensen in the first part of this series, but we did not cover Chapter 7 of the Innovator's Dilemma, that chapter Is entitled “Discovering New and Emerging Markets” It opens as follows: “Markets that do not exist cannot be analyzed: Suppliers and customers must discover them together. Not only are the market applications for disruptive technologies unknown at the time of their development, they are unknowable. The strategies and plans that managers formulate for confronting disruptive technological change, therefore, should be plans for learning and discovery rather than plans for execution. This is a crucial point to understand because managers who believe they know a market's future will plan and invest very differently from those who recognize the uncertainties of a developing market.” You may know those to be the words of Clayton Christensen, but what you may not know is that this concept of discovery-driven growth stems from the work of a very special friend of the Innovation Show, it is an immense pleasure to welcome Rita McGrath. Locked On Lakers - Daily Podcast On The Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers play a big game on Friday, welcoming Denver to the Crypt. Given the schedule for the rest of the month —decidedly short on home games—and their current record—not very good—it's about as close to a must-win as December games get. And their track record following disappointing games like the Boston loss on Tuesday is pretty good! So there are reasons to believe the Lakers will, at the least, put on a credible show. But from a fan's standpoint, there's also the matchup between Denver's Nikola Jokic and Anthony Davis. Two of the more remarkably skilled players going head to head, with different skill sets and styles. AD has faced off with Giannis and Embiid recently, and now gets the fourth of the four great bigs in the NBA right now (Davis being the fourth, given his play over the last month). It's a moment to appreciate just how good these athletes are, and the truly remarkable things they can do. It can be hard to divorce results from stuff like this, but even in moments of struggle for the team, as a sports fan it's fun to embrace these moments. Hopefully the game lives up to the potential. Meanwhile, Sunday marks the anniversary of one of the more entertaining nights of the 21st century at Staples. December 18, 2006, Gilbert Arenas lights up the Lakers for 60 in OT, besting Kobe (who had 45) and the Lakers. It was notable not only for the entertaining nature of the game (we were there, it was a blast) but for how angry Kobe was after, even criticizing Arenas for taking bad, irresponsible shots. (There is an irony, no question.) Games like that are easy to forget about, but when you remember to remember, the flood of good memories comes back. Finally, conversation (casual for the moment, given reported disinterest from the Wizards) about trading for Kyle Kuzma is picking up. Kuz would represent a ton of things for this team. First, a roster balancing upgrade that would do a lot of good. And second, a moment to focus on the tremendous inability of the Lakers to manage assets properly. Don't forget, they SENT OUT a pick in the deal that shipped Kuz to Washington in exchange for Russell Westbrook. To sacrifice another just to get him back? Optics, bad!!! (Not a reason not to do it, by the way...) HOSTS: Andy and Brian Kamenetzky SEGMENT 1: AD vs. Jokic is a reminder of what's fun about sports and the NBA. SEGMENT 2: Remembering the night Gilbert lit up Staples, and Kobe got real mad about it. SEGMENT 3: Oh, the tremendous conversations that come from trading for Kyle Kuzma!
