What's up, dudes? Remember Band Aid and its mega-hit “Do They Know It's Christmas?” It spun off countless relief efforts, including Carol Aid 1985. Ken Kessler from Sounds of Christmas introduced me to this concert, and he's here to talk about its MTV and Music Box broadcast!Carol Aid was a famine relief concert held at the club Heaven in London. MTV and Music Box aired a cut down version, leaving out several acts. In fact, the likes of Magnum, Captain Sensible, and Miquel Brown (to name a few) were cut for time. It's quite unbelievable.Cliff Richard kicked off the broadcast version with “Another Christmas Day,” while John Parr sang “Once in Royal David's City.” Meanwhile, the Fixx pressed for donations and sang “Peace On Earth,” a hidden track from their following album. Subsequently, the event ended with the entire roster singing “Do They Know It's Christmas?” rather heartily.Chris De Burgh? Check. Anita Harris? She was there. Toto Coelo and the Flying Pickets? Got them too, though we have no idea what they sang. So grab your oversized checks, put on your red beret, and jam out to “Carols from Heaven” and Carol Aid 1985!Sounds of ChristmasFB: @SOCMusicTwitter: @SOCMusicIG: @socmusicGive us a buzz! Cita a Hemingway: el cantante británico Chris De Burgh, nacido en Argentina y nacionalizado irlandés (It´s Me - An I´m Ready To Go 1997); la cantante de country Juice Newton (I´m Dancing As Fast As I Can 1982); así como la neoyorquina Lana del Rey (Religion 2015).

Part 2 with keyboard magic-dust provider, ~Andy Richards with more hits, more number ones (including a potential 2 more to make the full 10).And so much brilliant 80s pop…5. GEORGE MICHAELAn opportune meeting, a Sunday afternoon session and more immortality as Andy works with George on the iconic Careless Whisper. A later session with David Cassidy (on yet another top 10 smash) allows him the opportunity to work with George again.6. PET SHOP BOYSA triple whammy of number one singles between July 87 - April 88 as Andy works on It's a Sin, Always on my Mind and Heart (which he also produces). Not forgetting more hits in Suburbia and Rent as well as working on the Actually album.Later he works on the Liza Minelli album, Results (produced by the Pets) ‘resulting' in another top 10 hit in Losing My Mind.Comparisons are made between working with Liza and Dusty Springfield (who he produced on her Reputation album).7. CHRIS DE BURGHFrom the great experience working on the sublime pop of the Pets to the more problematic cheesy monobrow of The De Burgh.Another massive number one single with The Lady In Red (with a little help from George Michael) but at some cost.Despite the experience (and like mothers forgetting the pain of childbirth) Andy returns and works on another top 3 hit in Missing You. Plus discussion at the end on where else George Michael appears in the ARoeuvre.8. PREFAB SPROUTAndy produces the wonderful “Hey Manhattan!” By The Sprouts from their From Langley Park To Memphis album.Discussion on Paddy's views of the track (and why he is wrong, bless the little genius).9. PRODUCINGAs well as being the keyboard maestro go-to guy, Andy also produced many artists in the 80s.Here we go through some of them, from less successful experiences (Berlin) to yet more chart success with Fuzzbox and Holly Johnson. 10. MISCELLANEOUS80s odd and sods including the start of his film/TV work and a chance to mop up any other  hits worked on, including a potential 10th number one (Foreigner's I Want To Know What Love Is being the potential 9th). THE 80SOGRAPHY QUICKFIRE ROUNDAnd why not.For more on Andy - andyrichards.comTo help fund the pod or say hi - 80sography@gmail (PayPal)Vaughn George. 1983 - June: Dire Straits "Love Over Gold"

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 30, 2024 43:12

We covered the big commercial hit album "Brothers In Arms" back in episode 154, but many afficianados of Dire Straits consider their finest work to be the album that preceeded this one.  Love Over Gold is their fourth studio album, released in late September 1982 and on the charts in June 1983.  For this album, prime mover and lead vocalist Mark Knopfler, bassist John Illsley, and percussionist Pick Withers are joined by new members Hal Lindes on guitars and Alan Clark on keyboards.  The songs on this album are longer than your standard single, particularly the majestic 14-minute "Telegraph Road."  Despite their length, "Private Investigations" was released as a single in the UK and reached number 2on the charts.  The shortest song, "Industrial Disease" (still clocking in at 5:50) was released as a single in the US.  It would reach number 75 on the Billboard Hot 100, but would be a staple of rock radio stations at the time.A number of songs were written and recorded during the "Love Over Gold" sessions, but subsequently discarded from album release.  Amongst these was the song "Private Dancer," which was instead provided to Tina Turner for her comeback album of the same name.   Turner would take this song to number 7 on the US charts, and see her career reinvigorated by the success of her "Private Dancer" album."Love Over Gold" was a number 1 album on a number of charts, including Australia, Austria, and the UK, and reached number 19 on the US Billboard 200 albums chart.Rob brings us this outstanding, deep, and thought-provoking album for this week's podcast.Telegraph RoadThis lengthy masterpiece was inspired while Knopfler was riding in his tour bus down the 70-mile road of the same name.  The song narrarates the development and history along the road as the decades roll past.  It is easy to describe this song as prog rock, but it also contains one of the best guitar solo riffs you will hear. Industrial DiseaseGoodness me, goodness me!  We have to highlight the US single from the album.  The title comes from a term for work-related illness, and the term in this song references both individual work illness and the decline of British industry in general.  The reference to Dr. Parkinson is a British professor and satirist who is famous for the phrase "work expands to fill the time available for its completion." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Overture to the Marriage of Figaro by Mozart (from the motion picture “Trading Places”)Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd star in this comedy about a yuppie and a homeless man who are forced to trade places as the result of a bet by two rich stock brokers.   STAFF PICKS:Murder By Numbers by The PoliceBruce initiates the staff picks with a dark song about becoming a serial killer.  This Police song appears on the cassette and CD version of the album "Synchronicity," but was left off the vinyl due to lack of space.  It was written by Sting and Andy Summers, the only collaborative song on the album, and was recorded in a single take.  Rock of Ages by Def LeppardLynch brings us a huge song from Def Leppard's "Pyromania" album.  Producer Mutt Lange counts off the nonsensical "Gunter Glieben Glauten Globen," to open the song, and the lyrics form an anthem suitable for arena show openers.  Joan Jett's "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" was an inspiration to the creation of this anthem.Don't Pay the Ferryman by Chris deBurghWayne's staff pick takes a fantasy approach to the story of Charon and the crossing of the river Styx, advising not to pay until the trip is done.  Irish artist Chris deBurgh broke into the US top 40 with this song, peaking at number 34.  Lines from Shakespeare's play "The Tempest" can be heard in the bridge to the song. The Walls came Down by The Call Rob finishes the staff picks with a song that is inspired by the Biblical tale of the fall of Jericho.  Lead singer Michael Been would pull biblical references into his lyrics, including this song.  The Call formed in 1980 in California, and blended rock, New Wave, and post-Punk.  U2 and Simple Minds both consider The Call an influence in their music. COMEDY TRACK:My Bologna by "Weird Al" YankovicWe close out with Weird Al's meaty take on "My Sharona by" the Knack. We're going where the sun shines brightly,We're going where the sea is blue…1986 really was very Cliff. He had celebrated his first No1 of the 80s with the cast of The Young Ones, featured in some devastating billboard action in the (rerun) finale of the aforementioned BBC comedy show, been covered by the TVam rat and gerbil, and even had one of his most famous songs feature on a rather unique (and quite frankly ghastly) novelty Euro hit. And in July of the very same year, this very prominent track (it's Summer Holiday folks!), Cliff's ubiquitous seasonal anthem to double decker buses and Una Stubbs, was sitting proudly as track 1 side 2 on the latest NOW, That's What I Call Music album. But wait! The gloriously designed blue sky and beach umbrella that housed the latest variously compiled pop selection was not to feature such 1986 chart toppers as Wham!, Dr and the Medics and Chris De Burgh(!). This wasn't the impending 7th volume of the (rapidly becoming) world famous series of compilations, this was NOW - The Summer Album, and it was…well, different.Just as the wonderful team had done in November 1985 with NOW - The Christmas Album, here was the brand's second venture into a ‘theme'. And what a theme it was! Four decades of summer anthems, summer hits, sizzling memories - phew what a scorcher! But as it transpires, with guest Tim Worthington, we discover that the album announced from the pages of Smash Hits in July 1986 (featuring the most summery of acts, The Jesus and Mary Chain!) was much more than that just sun loungers and factor 30. Because growing up in the 70s/80s in the UK summer was often quite different indeed! What NOW - The Summer Album perhaps did do, was provide a template of summers we all wished we'd known; a sixties summer of love, a fifties summer of rock n roll, a seventies summer of…cricket (?) and of course an eighties summer of Radio One roadshows, and quite probably, traffic jams.It was an album that also provided a range of genres, new bands from the past to discover and a template for all summer soundtracks to come. So, dive back into an iconic chapter in the NOW series. Find out how some VERY big pop names appeared (TWICE!), why sound effects always make summer songs better, how some songs were longer (and shorter!) than others and why John Menzies probably didn't anticipate how well this summer set would sell. And importantly, remember your Plymouth dealer is, indeed, a dealing man. Joining me today is Austrian drummer Philipp Groyssboeck better known as Phil G. Phil has lived in London for the last 20 years and has gained a quite remarakable CV of wonderful artists synonymous with the 1980'S including names such as Go West, Mike and The Mechanics, Roachford, T'pau, Taylor Dayne, Chris DeBurgh, Nik Kershaw, Paul Young and many others. Join Phil and myself as we pick through some of the highlights of his career so far from his childhood in Austria in his parents bakery, through to playing drums with the Austrian military band whilst on National Service, Being Terry Bozzio's Drum tech for 2 weeks to performing with Mike & The Mechanics at the Isle Of White Festival in 2016. Phil also tells about his drums of choice, hand made in Austria, these are called Alto Beat Drums, and if you have ever been lucky enough to hear Phil play, then you will know exactly how good they sound and look! Many thanks to Phil for giving up the time from his insane schedule! it was a lot of fun! www.philippg.com www.alto-beat.com

We're back under the Metal Hammer this week as we take a look at a pre Seventh Son of a Seventh Son Iron Maiden. They're in a reflective mood (doing promo for their video 12 Wasted Years) but that leads us to talk Tiswas, Going Live, Live and Kicking and CD:UK. Along the way we get sidetracked by Stephen King, Mr Blobby, You and Me (Duncan the Dragon vs Cosmo and Dibs), Casper's Brainy Book and various other nostalgic reminiscences.   We discuss the pros and cons of Live albums and once again Chris De Burgh raises his head. Well it is still Halloween, technically.    Elsewhere we've got Loudness (a Japanese band interviewed by a German journalist, in English, which somehow goes without a hitch), Marillion (in a less than stellar live review, which nevertheless points the way forward for Bruce Dickinson's solo career), The Great Kat (exhorting us to worship her or die) and Paul Di'Anno (talking Frank Sinatra and sexy robots).   Recorded 26 October 2023

When I heard my guest, Rob Walch, singing on his podcast, I knew I had to have him on my podcast!  He jokes about how bad his singing is and shared a pretty funny story about him trying his hand at karaoke!  Rob loves the entire Chris De Burgh collection. So, I love that Rob chose the song "Don't Pay the Ferryman" by Chris De Burgh.  Rob discovered Chris De Burgh in the 80's, while folding pizza boxes at Satelite Pizza, and it's stuck with him throughout his life.  You see, Satelite Pizza had MTV, and Rob's house didn't.  You could rest assured after Rob's shift there were plenty of boxes ready for the next day's orders. Rob had just finished reading "The Clash of the Titans" and couldn't believe this song was singing about the Ferryman!!  Rob was hooked right then and there and checked out all music by Chris De Burgh.  Now, this wasn't something he was bragging to his bros about in high school, but he sure would share it with the ladies to show his softer side.  Full Show Notes
