We simply could not wrap up Designing Women without acknowledging its extended universe and CBS network spinoff, Women of the House. This is the short-lived series that reunited LBT and Delta Burke, and the show that brought back Suzanne Sugarbaker. Turns out: this one had some off-screen drama, too, but the best of it was in service to women. We like that.  We'll talk about our general reactions, likes, dislikes, and a bevy of Designing Women cameos PLUS some stunt casting with purpose.

ACORN is on the frontline of fighting the housing and affordability crises for low and moderate income people and in Ontario they've invested a lot of attention lately on one bad guy, Michael Klein. If that name sounds familiar, it's because he's the so-called "King of Renovictions". Last week the two sides came face-to-face, sort of, at the Landlord Tenant Board, but don't think this is the end of the fight! On January 21st, Hamilton tenants living at 221 Melvin Avenue went to the LTB for the first of 20 such board hearings around a single respondent who's bought apartment buildings around the Golden Horseshoe, Michael Klein. Klein's pattern is clear: He buys a building, issues N13s, people move out of their rent controlled units, and jacks up the rent after some cosmetic change. He's even doing it here in Guelph with three buildings on Brant Avenue.  At the heart of Klein's scheme is a misunderstanding on the part of tenants about their rights. An N13 is meant to be used when you need to demolish the rental unit, do extensive repairs or renovations, or convert it into a non-residential use. ACORN argues that this is purposeful, it's a strategy to take affordable housing and squeeze more profit out of it, which is why they want the LBT to consider all 20 cases as one. It's one way ACORN is taking on what might be its biggest and boldest protest yet!  Jacquie Wells, who is one of the organizers of Waterloo Region ACORN, will join us this week to talk about who Michael Klein is, how deep the issue with renovictions in Ontario goes, and how many Michael Klein types are out there. She will also talk about the strategies Klein uses to lean on tenants to get them to leave, and the difficulties that  ACORN and other activists have experienced trying to organize against him. And finally, she will discuss what comes next in the fight against renovictions.  So let's talk about taking down The King on this week's Guelph Politicast! You can learn more about ACORN at their website, where you can find their 2024 Michael Kein report. You can also follow ACORN Waterloo Region on Facebook and Instagram. There's also an article that was published on Guelph Today over the holidays that's worth reading because it features rare commentary from Klein himself The host for the Guelph Politicast is Podbean. Rich Rudowske and Tilahun Mendedo from Lutheran Bible Translators, on Financially Self-Sustaining Models for Bible Translation (Ep. 93)

Dr. Rich Rudowske and Dr. Tilahun Mendedo are the CEO and Associate Executive Director of Lutheran Bible Translators. Rich's passion for the written Word of God took root when, as a small child, his parents gifted him an NIV Bible. Tilahun's life was changed at the age of 15 when a German missionary gave him the greatest treasure of all – a Bible in his own Ethiopian language.  They each have an extensive background in Bible translation and a great passion to see the Word of God printed in every person's mother tongue through the work of Lutheran Bible Translators and other translation organizations worldwide. LBT has some particularly unique strategies blending entrepreneurship with translation in projects that fund themselves. They will share their personal stories, how God led them into Bible Translation, and about some incredible momentum happening today.  Major topics include: Tilahun's gripping backstory of being surrounded by death and struggling for a will to live, but finding life and hope through meeting Christ in the Word Rich's inspiring journey from the world of finance into the call of God, bringing his wife and five children with him The history of LBT and how their unique approach to Bible Translation evolved What is a “ministry entrepreneur” and how do these self-funded missions work to expand the Kingdom and engage local communities in Bible translation? The profound spiritual impact of hearing the Word of God in your mother tongue How Bible translation and language development improves quality of life as a whole The story of how God miraculously provided for their pilot project, the Helge Center, to be built during the pandemic lockdowns  An update on the incredible leaps happening now in the Bible translation world and the great need that still exists  How you can get invested, financially and through prayer, in this eternal endeavor QUOTES TO REMEMBER Tilahun – “Bible translation isn't something that I talk about, it's something that I am because I am the result of Bible translation.” Tilahun – “What I need is just something that makes a difference. If I could be anything that would make a difference to millions, then here I am.” Rich – “As many different folks there are with that mission drive, there are as many different stories and details of how they go about getting it done. But the common denominator is the drive to know that there's a better future for their people or for the neighboring people around them and the drive to put pieces together to make to happen.” Tilahun – “When you see the Word of God in your mother tongue, it means God is speaking to you. God has come all the way down to your language and is talking to you!” Tilahun – “Bible translation is tough, hard, and full of struggles, but at the end of the day, it's worth dying for. It's a noble cause. There is nothing better than connecting the Incarnated Word to this generation and the generations to come.” Rich – “We're at an unprecedented level of understanding where those needs may be, and an unprecedented level of both collaboration and innovation in reaching out to those language communities.” Rich – “The number one strategy is prayer – lifting the need for Bible translation in hard to reach people groups before the Lord, asking him to give us wisdom collectively on how to move forward and be wise.” Rich – “Even now, data shows us that it's not possible to meet the goals that we have in the next nine years. But data also shows us that we've closed the gap by about 100 years in the last five years. The last bit of it is going to be more difficult, but what looks impossible to us is not impossible to God.” Tilahun – “It's every Christian's responsibility to make sure his fellow humankind, who was created in the image of God and for whom Christ Himself died, has Christ in written form.” Tilahun – “Every person who supports Bible translation through prayers, funding, or advocacy is impacting the whole person.” Tilahun – “Don't forget, we are here only for a time. Don't take for granted that this is the world for you. We are here for a purpose and that purpose is designed by God so that we can live out that purpose and deliver it for generations to come.” LINKS FROM THE SHOW Lutheran Bible Translators Wycliffe Bible Translators (see our interview with CEO John Chesnut) SIL International (see our interview with Executive Director, Michel Kenmogne) IllumiNations Bible Translation Alliance (see our interview with Todd Peterson or John Chesnut) The Finish Line Community Facebook Group The Finish Line Community LinkedIn Group BIBLE REFERENCES FROM THE SHOW Revelation 7:9 | Every Tribe, Nation, and Tongue After this I looked, and behold, a great multitude that no one could number, from every nation, from all tribes and peoples and languages, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 1 Timothy 2:3-4 | God Desires All to be Saved This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Jacquire King, a Grammy-winning music producer, mixer, and engineer with over 13 billion streams and more than 35 Grammy nominations. His extensive credits include: Tom Waits, Kings of Leon, James Bay, Shania Twain, Modest Mouse, Smash Mouth, Norah Jones, Buddy Guy, Zach Bryan, Punch Brothers, Ingrid Michelson, Cold War Kids, City and Colour and many many more. And I'm going to quote from his great website bio: “Jacquire has just one gold record hanging in his studio. It's Mule Variations by Tom Waits, a personal favorite in the mile-long list of critically acclaimed albums, multiple GRAMMY Awards, and national accolades he's earned in more than 30 years as a sought-after recording engineer and producer.” He grew up in the Washington, DC area, absorbing a rich mix of influences from reggae to punk rock. While his friends were forming hardcore bands, Jacquire was studying the noise, making cassette mixes, and learning to transform raw live music into a complex listening experience. If he maintains one constant aesthetic in his work, it's blending traditional recording artistry with emerging tools and technology. “Curiosity moves an art form forward, so I incorporate whatever gives the artist the freedom to create. I always want to be part of that evolution.”  Jacquire is committed to playing an active role in the recording industry's next chapter, serving as an ambassador for new technology and acting as a frequent mentor to up-and-coming professionals. “I don't have any studio secrets,” he said. “If I can help someone figure out their own combination of talent and technology, I want to do that. If I can give an artist a new tool to make something great, count me in.” He has his own studio, The LBT, just outside of Nashville, Tennessee.  Thank you to Matt Boudreau and Mark Rubel for connecting us - and for API putting us on the same golf team for the The Annual AudioMasters Benefit Golf Tournament for the Engineers Relief Fund. Both were produced by Grammy award-winning Jacquire King (Kings Of Leon, Kaleo, Tom Waits, City and Colour) at King's studio, The LBT, just outside of Nashville, Tennessee. The band's previous single, “Get Somewhere” saw Robot Monster featured on Pittsburgh contemporary station T102; fans flooded the station with calls with over 7k calls following the band's on-air interviews. The song has also been featured on Spotify's Rock Hard and Apple Music's All New Rock & Breaking Rock playlists. Last May Robot Monster played their first show ever, serving as direct support for Stone Temple Pilots at the Palladium in New York City. The band is on tour now with The Bronx and Drug Church, with upcoming stops in Charlotte, Atlanta, and Memphis. For a full list of dates, please see below or visit: www.robotmonstermusic.com.About Robot Monster: In 2020, guitarist Will Brennan and drummer Logan Sidle weaponized Instagram and TikTok with scrappy appearances in backyards and junkyards, quickly earning supportive comments and direct messages from the diverse likes of Skrillex, Fred Durst, and Wesley Schultz of The Lumineers. Since then the band has experienced a meteoric rise – gaining a combined social following of 500k and regularly garnering over 2M views per week on TikTok.The magnetism of their musicianship and creativity quickly drew producer Jacquire King (Kings Of Leon, Buddy Guy, Tom Waits). King guided the New Haven, Connecticut duo as they collectively sharpened an identity and vision for what became Robot Monster. The band took shape without sacrificing, limiting, or overly complicating the initial spark, which quickly attracted so many.On their self-titled debut album they summon the enduring strength of stripped-down, bluesy rock n' roll with the feel of indie rock and punkish power. Songs like the riff-oriented and hooky groove monster “Caged,” the moody “Cargo Cult,” the expansively melodious “King of Everything,” and the atmospheric “When We Sang” confirm ROBOT MONSTER is a genuine force of nature. Both guys are in their twenties yet fully cognizant of the timeless appeal of what they've begun. Ahead of the album's release, the band's Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Schlapman, Philip Sweet and Jimi Westbrook joined Audacy's Rob + Holly to chat new music and how the four have managed to stick together for over two decades. “It feels like just yesterday we were driving ourselves around in our own van and loading up our own merch,” Schlapman said, reflecting on the early days of their career. “And then it does feel like forever,” she laughed. “We have a forever story and it's been twenty-something years long.” The band has celebrated the release of 27 singles together and they credit “patience, understanding, grace and respect,” for getting them through all the ups and downs. “We built this whole thing, from the foundation up, with it being about the band,” said Westbrook. “A lot of times… it can be easy for your egos to get in the way.” Their approach to focus on the quartet as a whole has also proven successful as the group's earned numerous award nominations including their most recent in the Vocal Group of the Year category for the 2022 CMA Awards. The always-positive clan is readying to release their 10th studio album, Mr.Sun on September 16 and according to them — it'll give you all the positive vibes, just as the title suggests. “[Positivity] was definitely the intention,” said Fairchild. “Especially coming out of Nightfall, the last record, were were holding on to a few songs that didn't seem to fit that body of work.” She continued “I think during the pandemic we all needed something to look forward to, you know? So this is the sunnier side of the street!” Grab your sunglasses! The LBT talent is sure to shine bright on this project! Check it out September 16.

They arrived in Cameroon in March 2018 and their mission is to work alongside a local language group that doesn't have the full Bible in their language, revising their New Testament, translating the Old and increasing literacy rates community-wide. Elliot talked about his near death experience when he contracted "African Tick Bite Fever". Him and his family have experienced some great relationships with the Subula people of Cameroon. Before beginning service with LBT, the Derricks served in various fields with LCMS International from 2010 – 2016, including Slovakia, Macau, and South Korea. These are the accounts from my childhood in the 80's of a church targeting "predominantly black neighborhood children" with gentle grooming by getting them on church buses driving 45 miles from their homes to worship. Sometimes being in the Bible Belt are the stuff of nightmares. You may think "harmless" but from my perspective it's not cool to hide and run away on Sundays from the LBT bus. In my own experience, others and many more sharing these experiences, we always ran away from them. How MulteFire is creating and supporting opportunities in private wireless Nokia, along with Qualcomm, created the MulteFire Alliance in 2015. Its purpose was to create a global ecosystem for the deployment of 4G LTE in configurations that used unlicensed spectrums, and to create MulteFire specifications.  In the years since, these specifications have been embedded into the 3GPP standards. One example is the additive Listen Before Talk, known as LBT, which helps to ensure smart co-existence with local wi-fi networks. Industries have realised they need cellular connectivity, particularly LTE or 5G, to digitalize operations and activate new use cases. As a result, private wireless networks are now deployed across the world. However, in some cases deployment faces a bottleneck in the form of spectrum. In some countries, there is limited LTE spectrum; in the UK, for instance, there is less than 20MHz of spectrum bandwidth available for industries, which need a lot of capacity for data-hungry applications such as video surveillance. Some other nations do not have a coherent policy in terms of LTE license allocations for industrial sites. They are often too expensive, or not yet adapted to the context. There is also an increasing demand for temporary LTE cellular networks for events, field hospitals or even construction sites. MulteFire delivers a solution to all these problems. It has 450MHz of bandwidth in the 5GHz frequency band, comes with zero cost, is easy to access and is available in most countries. In the context of the scarcity of spectrum, MulteFire is a gold mine. MulteFire is much more than an enhanced version of wi-fi MulteFire is unlicensed, and it leverages some of wi-fi's spectrum bands. It is, however, far more than simply “wi-fi on steroids”. There are some critical advantages to MulteFire, particularly in the context of Industry 4.0. Coverage: Industrial sites are complex, with walls and panels and plenty of metal, which means radio planning can be a nightmare. MulteFire leverages the capability of 3GPP LTE 4G features, which means one of its access points can deliver the same coverage as more than four wi-fi access points. This makes it a far more compelling deployment than wi-fi. Mobility: This is vital for many industrial applications, such as autonomous mobile robots. They move around a site, which means network connectivity must be always on, everywhere. Wi-fi does not support handovers between access points, so it cannot support this type of business-critical use case, whereas MulteFire can. Security: MulteFire is a 3GPP technology with SIM authentication and end-to-end encryption, which makes it superior to wi-fi in an age of increasingly sophisticated cyber attacks. How Nokia's MulteFire modem is blazing a trail Nokia recently announced industry's first certified MulteFire user equipment, the MulteFire modem. This is a field router that connects to assets such as sensors and machines via USB or Ethernet, and enables them to connect to a private wireless network using MulteFire certified access points. We use the same architecture and core network as our private wireless network, the Nokia Digital Automation Cloud. The combination of MulteFire, where no spectrum authorization is needed, and NDAC makes it simple for anyone to deploy a private network anywhere in the world. Nokia is recognized by major industry analysts as not just a leader, but the leader in this field. We have several hundred customers and are adding dozens more every quarter. Our expertise and experience in the various sectors, regions and countries sets Nokia apart. While LTE licenses can be a barrier in some countries, with MulteFire it is possible to deliver connectivity in any country in the world. This new innovation will drive the MulteFire ecosystem via the MulteFire Alliance. For more insights around all things private, 4.9G, LTE and 5G, please contact the private wireless team at Nokia.
