How Your Identity Impacts Your Self-Esteem

We've done many episodes of Doable Discipleship about identity, largely because it's such an important topic in a world that constantly tries to fight for the right to control your identity, but also because there's just so much to talk about, particularly from the Christian perspective. And today I want to add two more facets to that conversation: self-esteem and bias. The premise: who you think you are creates a bias, even an unconscious one, in how you receive input about your life and how you view other people. It affects how you handle success, failure, advice, friendships, and so much more. Christians have the opportunity to anchor their identity, and therefore their bias and self-esteem in two key biblical truths. To talk to us about bias, self-esteem, and these biblical truths is Dr. Erin Devers, professor of psychology and Indiana Wesleyan University and author of the new book, The Unbiased Self. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the old heaven and the old earth had disappeared. And the sea was also gone. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven like a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. I hear a loud shout from the throne, saying, ‘Look, God's home is now among his people! He will live with them, and they will be his people. God himself will be with them. He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.” – Revelation 21:1-4 There are many pictures of what heaven may be like. From art to poetry to film and television, many people have depicted heaven one way or another. And I completely understand why people would want to do so – heaven is something I believe everybody thinks about at some point in their life. Even an atheist has likely gone through the mental exercise of thinking, if heaven is real I wonder what it may be like. So today I want to explore the mystery of heaven: what the Bible says about heaven, how culture has depicted heaven, and seek answer some of the most common questions people have. To do so I reached out to an expert. Dr. Alister McGrath recently retired as the Andreas Idreos Professor of Science and Religion at Oxford University where he started teaching in 1983. Dr. McGrath now serves as Senior Research Fellow at the Ian Ramsey Centre for Science and Religion at Oxford. He is the author of an immensely popular textbook, Christian Theology: An Introduction which is in its 6th edition and, most appropriate for this conversation, he's the author of A Brief History of Heaven. The Bible talks a lot about salvation, or our need to be saved. Jesus is the promised savior and the central tenet of the Gospel is it is faith in Jesus that saves you from your sin. All of this is, of course, true, and if you were to ask the average Christian what it means to be saved they would likely say that their faith in Jesus saves them from hell and gives them an eternity in heaven. Again, this is not wrong. But, it is incomplete. Salvation is far deeper, far more encompassing, and far more miraculous than we typically consider it. This is the goal of this “mysteries of the faith” series: to take a topic that we think we understand and dig a little deeper. To help guide us in the topic of salvation is Pastor Buddy Owens. Buddy is a teaching pastor at Saddleback and has been on this podcast many times. In this conversation Buddy and I talk about what happened on the cross, how salvation is more than just a saving from something, what it means to live out your salvation, and look to answer some of the most pressing questions people have about salvation. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. "I was reading the back cover of a new book when something caught my attention and just wouldn't let go. The book is called Easter by Wesley Hill and the phrase that grabbed hold of me read “Easter is more than a day – it's a season even longer than Lent. In fact, for the Christian who has died with Christ and been brought to life in him, Easter is the new, joyous, and radical way of living.” Woah. Let me say that last part again: for the Christian, Easter is the new, joyous, radical way of living. When I read this, I immediately knew deep in my soul how true this was, yet also how little I had spent thinking about it, let alone living out the truth of it in my life."This episode of Doable Discipleship is a look at the true, eternal nature of Easter and a celebration of a life lived eternally because of Jesus Christ. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. There's something we all experience that we usually can't quite put our finger on or find the right words to describe. We hear the sermons about what the Christian life should be like. We read the books and hear the podcasts and we're told what a life lived for and with God is like – a life of joy, of ease, of clear direction, of no worry. And yet . . . it doesn't always go that way. Many people, maybe you right now, hear these things and think “why isn't my life like that? I love God, I try to follow his Word and yet my life is hard and sad. Why isn't the Christian life I hear about my experience?” Michael John Cusick calls this experience, “the gap” or “the delta”. And it's a very common thing for Christians to experience.  Today host Jason Wieland is joined by Michael John Cusick to talk about his new book, Sacred Attachment: Escaping Spiritual Exhaustion and Trusting in Divine Love. In this conversation, Michael and Jason talk about embracing brokenness, what neuroscience teaches us about how we attach and process, the spiritual practice of being, addiction and shame, and much more. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. Mysteries of Faith: Prayer

When I thought about doing a series on Mysteries of Faith, one of the very first topics that came to my mind was prayer. Now, I've been a Christian since I was 5. Prayer has always been a part of my life. But if I'm honest, there are elements about prayer that I always just accepted as true, nodded my head at, and then moved on with the general way I've always prayed. As I got older though, I started to wonder about some things the way I imagine many of you wonder about prayer too. “Do my prayers really move God to act?” “Is there a proper way to pray?” “Why doesn't God seem to answer all of my prayers?” I knew of prayer as talking with God, I even would say I knew why God wanted me to pray, but there were so many spiritual elements of prayer that were still so mysterious to me. Prayer is a completely spiritual practice. With Bible-reading, we're at least engaging with a book. Prayer, on the other hand, is totally spiritual so I was excited to dive into some of the more deeply spiritual elements of prayer with my friend Dr. Kyle Strobel. Kyle Strobel is Associate Professor of Spiritual Theology at Talbot and author of the book Where Prayer Becomes Real: How Honesty with God Transforms Your Soul. Kyle has been on this podcast a few times in the past, once to talk specifically about his book on prayer, but today I invited him on to pull back the curtain on some of the more mysterious elements of prayer – what is really happening spiritually when we pray. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. Galatians 2:20 – “My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me.”1 Corinthians 6:17 – “But the person who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with him.” 2 Corinthians 5:17 – This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!”These verses, along with many others in the Bible, paint a part of the picture of what happens as a result of salvation. And if we're honest, I think it's a part of the picture we tend to look past. When we think about salvation, our minds typically go to the part that is easier to understand: we will not go to hell, we will go to heaven. “I go here, not there, I get that.” But the picture of salvation in Scripture is so, so much more rich than that. In fact, as the verses I just read highlight, salvation makes us a new creation – and not just that but it is no longer I who live but Christ lives in me. The Bible paints a truly beautiful picture of oneness – it often uses the terms “in Christ” or “in him” or “united with Christ.” And again, speaking from a place of honesty, this is something I hadn't spent too much time thinking about in my life – and I think many of us are this way. We move past it either as a truth that doesn't seem to pertinent to the way I live every day, or too complex that we just add it to the list of mysteries of the faith. In this series we will explore some of the mysteries of the faith we tend to move past. I want to name them, examine them from different perspectives, and talk about who these mysteries can actually have profound effects on how we approach our personal walk with Jesus. This first episode is on what it means to be in union with Christ. To help navigate us through this is Dr. Clive Bowsher. Dr. Bowsher is provost of Union School of Theology and author of the books Life in the Son and One: Being United to Jesus Changes Everything.Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. There's a question at the heart of the new book “Delighting in Jesus” that caught my attention: it says, “I know I should read by Bible and pray every day, but I'm just not consistent. For many Christians, ‘daily devotions' and ‘spiritual disciplines' strike guilt and shame in our hearts. But what if we got it all wrong? What if our Christian experience hinges not on perfect spiritual disciplines, but on the perfect love of a Father who delights in us?”  This has been a topic I've been interested in for a while now: what does relationship with Jesus really mean. And now there's a new word entering the conversation: delight. We often talk about joy or happiness, but I'm so grateful to my guest today, Asheritah Ciuciu, for focusing in on the word delight. Asheritah is the host of the Prayers of Rest Podcast and author of many books including Full, Bible & Breakfast, Walking with God, and her latest, Delighting in Jesus. In this conversation, Asheritah and I talk about why “delight” is an important word when thinking about our relationship with Jesus, why we don't need to be afraid of being broken, how to build your joy center in your brain, and much more. I want to note too, in the show notes for episode you'll find links to purchase Delighting in Jesus (which I highly recommend) and also a link to a devotional personality quiz that will help you understand better how God created you to feel most connected to him. “If we have eyes to see, we uncover joy almost everywhere. Like someone searching for sand crabs on the coastline, we may not find her under every rock. But we also don't need to look too hard before we uncover her.” This is a quote from the new book, Longing for Joy. There are many misconceptions about joy. There are many people who may struggle with joylessness because of anxiety, depression, or other factors. But there is also an availability of joy, true deep joy, to be found in Christ and his creation. This episode today is one of those moments where I think God is up to something. I've seen, heard, and read a lot about joy as of late. When I hear something pop up in a lot of conversations, that's usually a sign to me that God is wanting to do a work in us related to this topic - and it was an added nudge from God when I saw the new book, Longing for Joy, by Alastair Sterne, which quickly turned into one of my favorite books of the year. I'm joined today by Alastair to talk about the reality of longing, joy found in creation and each other, practices that help cultivate joy, and much more. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. I have a very vivid memory of a specific church service about 10 years ago. My wife and I go into the worship center, find seats in our usual section, but the stage looks different. There are instruments I've never seen on our stage, and in a configuration that I didn't recognize. When the service starts, a group of people come out onto the stage in long coats, suspenders, moppish hair, and then the drum starts. The rap of the single snare drum (make sound) that I hadn't heard in that way before but have come to be very familiar with now. That service sticks out so much in my mind because that's the kind of effect For King & Country have. The experience was so exciting, so fresh, and the music itself had a similar effect. Since then, For King & Country have become one of the biggest names in Christian music as four-time Grammy winners with hit songs such as Crave, The Proof of Your Love, Fix Your Eyes, Priceless, Joy, and so many more. But they've also now ventured into other forms of storytelling, with movies they've been involved in like Unsung Hero and the new theatrical release of their Christmas Concert, Drummer Boy Live. Today's guest is Luke Smallbone, half of the duo known as For King & Country along with his brother Joel. In this conversation host Jason Wieland talks with Luke about how he sees Jesus show up in the songwriting process, the power of storytelling, how being a parent changes perspective, the special effect experiences have on us, and much more. Doable Discipleship is a Saddleback Church podcast produced and hosted by Jason Wieland. Months later, they're now traveling across America on the 31-city "For KING + COUNTRY LIVE: The UNSUNG HERO 2024 Tour," performing music from the film and offering faith-inspiring messages to audiences. The Smallbones' work is a fusion of art, faith, encouragement, innovation, and grit.Joel Smallbone told "Higher Ground With Billy Hallowell" that he and Luke are "trying to create awe-inspiring environments" through their music and performances. And it's not lost on him that For KING + COUNTRY is bringing out these messages of hope during a "very tumultuous time for this country." It's a responsibility and honor Smallbone doesn't take lightly."We get to pull people into a room that vote, think, look, act different from one another — different beliefs, different points of view, and yet we can come together for two and a half hours and have this ... emotional, relational, spiritual moment together," he said. "I'm really proud of it, and I think that's part of the deep purpose of it."FOLLOW BILLY ON SOCIAL MEDIA:- Follow Billy on Twitter- Follow Billy on Instagram- Follow Billy on Facebook- Follow Billy on YouTube

It's Friday, May 3rd, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Open Doors ministers to Ethiopian woman who lost everything Desta Alemu knows what it's like to be hated and cast out for her faith in Jesus. After all, she has the ashes of her burned home and business to prove it. She and her family were caught up in violence in their community in Ethiopia. She said, “When we left our home, it was very difficult. We couldn't even find a way to get out; we hid in a neighbor's house three houses down. I can't explain the pain and worry I felt in the chaos. Our possessions were destroyed; we lost everything.” Thankfully, Open Doors was able to help her with both immediate needs—and long-term trauma care. Desta explained, “Because I came [to the trauma care seminar], countless things have changed in me. I've learned about humility, and how Jesus was also persecuted. … Jesus was also hated, and He was also cast out.” In John 15:18-19, Jesus said, “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated Me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.” Open Doors lists Ethiopia as the 32nd most dangerous country worldwide in which to be a Christian. Chinese Bible distributor sentenced to 5 years in prison In April 2021, Chinese authorities arrested 10 Christians for selling and distributing Bibles in Hohhot, the capital city of Inner Mongolia — an autonomous region in northern China. Just last month, a judge sentenced one of these believers to prison. On April 15, 2024, Ban Yanhong was sentenced to five years in prison for “illegal business operations.” That's how the Communist government describes the distribution of Bibles to Christians in Inner Mongolia. Originally, the 10 Hohhot Christians purchased the Bibles legally from a church in Nanjing associated with the Three-Self Patriotic Movement. These churches are the only legal churches in China and are controlled by the Communist government. In Ban's case, prosecutors argued that even though the Bibles were initially purchased legally in Nanjing, selling and distributing them in Inner Mongolia by unregistered house church members was illegal. Supreme Court agrees with Texas' age requirement for porn Great news! The United States Supreme Court has rejected a request to block enforcement of a Texas law that requires porn sites to verify the age of its users. This will ensure that far fewer minors will have access to these ungodly images. In a one-sentence miscellaneous order released Tuesday that included no dissents, the Supreme Court declined to issue a stay in the case of Free Speech Coalition v. Paxton. This allows a ruling from a three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit that upheld the age verification law to remain in effect. Last June, Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott signed House Bill 1181, which requires porn sites to verify a user's age. Any company found violating the requirement faces a fine of as much as $10,000 per day. Additionally, a porn company can be fined $250,000 if a minor sees explicit content because their age was not properly verified. Second Boeing whistleblower died unexpectedly A second Boeing whistleblower has died unexpectedly as the company faces scrutiny over safety failures on its passenger jets, reports Fox News. Joshua Dean, a quality inspector for the Boeing supplier Spirit AeroSystems, died this week after a surprise infection left him in critical condition for days. The cause was MRSA, an antibiotic-resistant staph infection, according to what his aunt Carol Parsons told the Seattle Times, which first reported the death. The 44-year-old lost his job in 2023 and filed a retaliation complaint with federal labor officials, alleging that he was only fired for speaking out. Dean had been deposed in connection with a shareholder lawsuit and had reported dangerous faults in components of Boeing's 737 MAX plane — a model linked to a number of catastrophes in recent years. John Barnett, age 62, is the other Boeing whistleblower.  He had sued Boeing, claiming that he had been retaliated against, harassed, and spied on by the company. He never showed up for his second day of depositions. Barnett was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound on March 9 outside his Charleston, South Carolina hotel the day after he gave a deposition in connection with his own retaliation lawsuit. “Unsung Hero” is a must-see Christian movie And finally, Joel and Luke Smallbone, the Australian duo that make up the Grammy Award-winning group for King and Country, and their older sister, artist Rebecca St. James, are widely known in music circles. But their family's backstory — and unlikely rise to fame — hasn't been told in-depth and in all its glorious messiness, until now.  The Christian movie, “Unsung Hero,” explores the remarkable journey of the Smallbone family as they relocate from Australia to America in search of new beginnings, reports The Christian Post. After the collapse of his music business, David Smallbone, portrayed by a bespectacled Joel Smallbone, finds himself in a challenging position. Together with his pregnant wife, Helen, the “unsung hero” portrayed by Daisy Betts and their six children, they embark on a transcontinental journey, armed with little more than their luggage and a steadfast belief in their musical dreams. The company behind it also released “Jesus Revolution,” “I Can Only Imagine” and “Ordinary Angels.” A wholesome, faith-based film, “Unsung Hero” focuses largely on the power of prayer. In Philippians 4:6, the Apostle Paul wrote, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God.” “Unsung Hero” also underscores the necessity of a vibrant church community, and the importance of family sticking together against all odds.  James Smallbone, David's father, reminds his son, “Your family isn't in the way, they are the way.” I saw it with my bride, Amy, and our three children Tuesday night.  It is terrific and very moving. I urge you to get your tickets ASAP since it will only be in the theaters through Wednesday, May 8th. Helen shares her family's journey of faith and resilience. After facing major job loss and financial struggles, they moved from Australia to the United States with six children and no furniture. Through living by faith and relying on God, they experienced miracles and learned valuable lessons about trust, hard work, and the importance of family.  Helen encourages wives to support their husbands during difficult times and emphasizes the need for a strong foundation in Jesus. She also discusses their homeschooling experience and the upcoming movie about their story, 'Unsung Hero.'Key Takeaways:Living by faith and relying on God can lead to miracles and life-changing experiences.Supporting and encouraging your spouse during difficult times is crucial.A strong foundation in Jesus is essential for navigating challenges.Homeschooling can provide flexibility and opportunities for practical learning.God cares about the details and provides for our needs in unexpected ways.Meet the Guest:Helen Smallbone grew up in Australia as the daughter of a Methodist minister and the youngest of four children. Even though she grew up in church, her faith became real in her mid-teens when she committed her life to Christ at a Billy Graham Crusade in Sydney.Trained as an Occupational Therapist, Helen's greatest desire was to serve God and become a wife and mother. At age 20, she married the love of her life, David Smallbone, and over the next 14 years, they added seven children to their family. In 1991, after experiencing a financial crisis in Australia, the Smallbone family relocated to the Nashville, TN, area, where David began a career in music management for Christian artists. This new adventure required every family member to place their trust in God and live by faith. In Behind the Lights: The Extraordinary Adventure of a Mum and Her Family (K-LOVE Books, April 12, 2022), Helen shares how the Smallbone family learned to let God lead – which has included living outside the box of American cultural norms. Her book describes God's constant faithfulness and provision during the lean years after their arrival in the United States. Helen recounts stories that vividly describe how the family worked together to make ends meet, found support in new friends and neighbors, homeschooled on the road, and grew closer with every challenge they overcame. Helen's love for God and family has only grown stronger as she and David have supported their children's creative career paths. Their daughter, Rebecca St. James, and two of their sons, for KING & COUNTRY stars Luke and Joel Smallbone, have collectively earned five Grammys. When not busy with her children and grandchildren, Helen is dedicated to sharing her passion and love for God with those around her. She is the co-founder of MUMlife,(www.MUMlife.org), a ministry of “mothers uplifting mothers,” and co-host of the MUMlife Community Podcast. David and Helen Smallbone live just outside of Nashville with a small menagerie of animals.Additional Resources:Secure your ticket for Unsung Hero TODAY- Click herehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHyrHRNX9Rk
