Label: Capitol 3473Year: 1972Condition: MPrice: $12.00Now, I'm as big a fan of Big Star as anybody, but I have to say that if I were Eric Carmen, I'd be pretty pissed at not getting more credit for advancing the sound of Power Pop than most critics grudgingly offer his old band, the Raspberries. Consider, for example, that this single and its predecessor, "Go All The Way," were roughly contemporary with the first Big Star LP and singles. And if you listen to this song and a Big Star masterpiece like "September Gurls" in the same sitting, it's clear that Alex Chilton and Eric Carmen were soulmates in sound. So don't be afraid to reminisce about being a teenager again as you listen to this blissful sexual daydream... it's one of the best ever recorded! These tunes were first released on Harvest 5175 in late 1982, and then re-released in 1983 on Capitol, when "Rio" hit #14p in April. What's particularly interesting is that the two singles had two different mixes/edits of each song! The Harvest single had "Hold Back The Rain" on the A side in a shorter edit than the one here (and on the album), and the case for "Rio" was the reverse, with the single an edited version of the 5:33 album track. No matter... both songs represent the best of this U.K. group's early material. IMHO, "Hold Back The Rain" is superior to "Rio," hence the mp3 nugget in the Classic 45's jukebox. Label: Capitol 3546Year: 1973Condition: MLast Price: $18.00. Not currently available for sale. This is one of only two Raspberries singles that Capitol decorated with a picture sleeve... the other being their first chart single, which failed pretty miserably (peak: #86). The cool thing about the "Let's Pretend" sleeve, though, isn't the great band-member photos on the back, it's the rather incredible promotion taking place on the front! You can't read the small print in the accompanying scan, but basically, this was a contest to win a Raspberries "Rollswagen"--a Volkswagen Beetle decked out to look like a Rolls! There are oodles of time-capsule-worthy notes on the front, but my favorites are the following two "Far-Out Features":Quadrasonic 8-Track Stereo System! Outasight sound with 4 speakers by Car Tapes, Inc., of CaliforniaA Complete Library of 100 Capitol 8-Track Cartridges! Includes Beatles! Helen Reddy! Rick Springfield! Leon Russell! Many more favorites!By the way, this single is specially edited from a longer (3:42) album track. Note: The 45 is pristine Mint in all respects. The Near Mint sleeve has a touch of ringwear.
