Cioran is notorious as the depressive philosopher par excellence. While figures such as Schopenhauer, Ligotti and Benatar have advanced logical arguments for their pessimistic outlook, Cioran's work is completely missing any such justification for his depressive feeling for life. Instead, his work is a lyrical outpouring of his inner life. In this episode we're taking a look at his first and most infamous book, "On the Heights of Despair", written during a bout of insomnia. As his translator, Zarifopol-Johnston argues, the book was an attempt to preserve Cioran's real self by "killing" a literary version of himself. We explore this interpretation of Cioran's work: that it is a means of coping with the madness and sorrow he finds within himself, through lyricism. Ironically, a text that was rumored to have caused many suicides may have preserved Cioran's life.

ALS, a nervous system disease, ruled the headlines in the summer of 2014 thanks to the viral Ice Bucket Challenge. How has our knowledge of the disorder evolved a decade later? Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as ‘Lou Gehrig's disease' (named after the iconic baseball player), is a progressive neurological disorder which breaks down a person's motor neurons. The main symptoms are muscle weakness and impaired physical function — mild, at first, but in the latter stages of the disease's progression, essential processes like breathing begin to fail. Most individuals face a life expectancy of two to five years. A small percentage live five to ten years. And an even tinier group survive beyond a decade. Most famously, renowned physicist Stephen Hawking survived more than 50 years past his diagnosis, in part due to the intensive care he was able to afford. In this episode of the ‘Your Brain On...' podcast, we discuss: • What ALS is, and how it affects the brain and the body • The onset and progression of ALS, from the earliest symptoms to the end-stage impacts • How ALS patients are diagnosed, treated, and cared for • Likely causes of ALS, including genetic predispositions and potential environmental risk factors • How new technologies are rapidly accelerating our understanding of ALS, especially in genetics Joining us for this installment of the show are two world-class experts on the disease: • Professor Ammar Al-Chalabi PhD, Professor of Neurology and Complex Disease Genetics at the Maurice Wohl Clinical Neuroscience Institute at King's College. • Merit Cudkowicz, Director of the Sean M. Healey & AMG Center for ALS at Massachusetts General Hospital. ‘Your Brain On' is hosted by neurologists, scientists and public health advocates Ayesha and Dean Sherzai. ‘Your Brain On... Mark interviews Cathy Rankin and Ken Mary about Cathy's new single "Now You've Gone." On October 29, 2024, Cathy Rankin released her debut single “Now You've Gone,” featuring renowned musicians David Ellefson (formerly of Megadeth) Ken Mary (formerly of Alice Cooper) and John Ronson. The emotional track, inspired by deeply personal experiences, reflects on themes of love, grief, and ultimately hope. Prior to the interview, Mark shares comments from recent episodes, a personal update, and a word from this episode's sponsor. This episode is sponsored by the 2024 Novel Writing Storybundle - Only available until the end of November 2024.   In the interview, Mark, Cathy, and Ken talk about: Cathy's various family members who are musicians, her first exposure to music when she was young and how that impacted her creative life Getting into theatre, and acting, when she was little, but not having the confidence in music itself The first time Cathy had to perform a singing scene when she was acting in a film The difference between being a performing musician and being a live host Ken's background as a musician having toured with various different artists over the years How being the lead singer might be one of the more difficult positions to be in, since the majority of the audience focus is on them (rather than, for example, the drummer) The concept of the instrument choosing the musician rather than it being the other way around - and how that's the way it was for Ken and playing the drums How playing drums was never "work" for Ken no matter what type of band he was in The great producers that Ken has worked alongside over the years The way that Cathy and Ken first met and started to work together (When Jon Ronson asked Cathy to interview Ken about his most recent album) Cathy showing some of her poems to Ken and getting some feedback on the option to produce one of them into a song How everything in this production unfolded organically and the chemistry of Cathy and the musicians in producing the song The delightful lyrical and musical Easter Eggs that appear in the song The connection between Neil Peart's loss of his daughter and the loss of Cathy's nephew Christian and why the song is a tribute to both their memories What people who want to support the musical artists can do to help out   After the interview Mark reflects on three different things that came up in the conversation, including the magic of organic creativity, the concept of playing a character when on stage, and the value of art, music, poetry, and prose in expressing deep emotion and forging connections. Clips from "Now You've Gone" have been used with permission. Whether on stage, on camera, or in any crowd, Rankin brings a strong female voice to her music on every level. Never one to take a backseat, this force-to-be-reckoned-with doesn't just move fans with her powerful vocals, but also proudly reps the girls while holding her own with the guys. And, in Cathy's case, it's not just any ordinary "guys" that are part of her project, its renowned rockers David Ellefson, bassist (Kings of Thrash, Dieth, formerly of Megadeth), Ken Mary, Drummer/Composer/Producer (Flotsam and Jetsam, Great White, Fifth Angel, formerly of Alice Cooper and House of Lords), and guitarist John Bronson. This formidable line-up is on display on her new single, "Now You've Gone," with more music arriving soon. Cathy's natural inclination for music and performance was evident from an early age when she vowed she would be a singer and actor, and her dream never wavered. Her grandfather first influenced her love of music. An accomplished professional big band musician, he played saxophone, clarinet, flute, piccolo and piano, primarily by ear, practicing in his music room with Cathy paying close attention. This exposure, along with her grandmother, one of the first female violinists in the Scottsdale Symphony, and guidance from her big sister who played drums in the popular 80s metal band, Whiskey Blu, formed the musical foundation that would be a lifelong passion for this songstress. While Cathy's influences were wide-ranging, her original work is deeply rooted in classic rock woven with elements of blues, a touch of prog and at times even country, taking listeners on a journey reminiscent of the iconic frontwomen that defined female rock, such as Nicks, Wilson and Benatar. As a member of popular cover bands, Superhero and Daisy Train, Cathy spent years performing full time for thousands of audiences on countless stages, from Superbowl Fanfest, to corporate events, festivals and the Vegas Strip. Cathy is also co-host of the Metal Hall of Fame with Eddie Trunk (That Metal Show, Trunk Nation), and host of the annual Bubba Bash honoring Neil Peart. And through in-depth interviews with award-winning artists such as John Waite, Geoff Tate, Lita Ford, KIX, Winger, Fifth Angel, and more, Cathy has been able to share that education and inspiration with countless other passionate music fans. Ken K. Mary is an American musician who has worked as a drummer, producer, engineer, and record executive on over thirty-five albums. He has worked in genres from heavy rock to choral music. Mary is best known for his work with acts such as Accept, Fifth Angel, Chastain, TKO, Impellitteri, House of Lords, Bonfire and Alice Cooper, and is currently the drummer of Flotsam and Jetsam and Jack Russell's Great White   The introductory, end, and bumper music for this podcast (“Laser Groove”) was composed and produced by Kevin MacLeod of www.incompetech.com and is Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0

In addition to his work on antinatalism, Benatar has written extensively on practical ethics, morality, and human suffering, and his most recent contributions to Quillette have focused on the conflict in Israel and rising antisemitism in the Anglosphere. Dr. David Benatar is a very special guest of mine indeed. A philosophical heavyweight renowned for his work worldwide, Dr. Benatar coined the term 'anti-natalism' and wrote the infamous anti-natalist book 'Better Never to Have Been', which puts forward the argument that it is bad that sentient life comes into existence and that we ought not procreate. Dr. Benatar's work has shaped my life immensely. In this episode, I put to Dr. Benatar (a vegan anti-natalist himself) the idea put forward by NATALIST vegans (i.e. vegans who believe procreation is NOT immoral) that anti-natalism could actually HARM animals in the long run. We discuss whether anti-natalist vegans should have a duty to clear the most land space to prevent creation of new life; whether veganism's environmental "benefits" are indeed a benefit; the contentious killing predators debate; and whether humans need to be around to help mitigate the horrendous issue of wild animal suffering. Plus, Dr. Benatar gives his opinion on what vegans with carnivorous animals such as snakes in their care ought to do with the animal.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Unpicking Extinction, published by ukc10014 on December 10, 2023 on LessWrong. TL;DR Human extinction is trending: there has been a lot of noise, mainly on X, about the apparent complacency amongst e/acc with respect to human extinction. Extinction also feels adjacent to another view (not particular to e/acc) that 'the next step in human evolution is {AI/AGI/ASI}'. Many have pushed back robustly against the former, while the latter doesn't seem very fleshed out. I thought it useful to, briefly, gather the various positions and summarise them, hopefully not too inaccurately, and perhaps pull out some points of convergence. This is a starting point for my own research (on de-facto extinction via evolution). There is nothing particularly new in here: see the substantial literature in the usual fora for instance. Thomas Moynihan's X-risk (2020) documents the history of humanity's collective realisation of civilisational fragility, while Émile P. Torres' works (discussed below) set out a possible framework for an ethics of extinction. My bottom line is: a) the degree of badness (or goodness) of human extinction seems less obvious or self-evident than one might assume, b) what we leave behind if and when we go extinct matters, c) the timing of when this happens is important, as is d) the manner in which the last human generations live (and die). Relevant to the seeming e/acc take (i.e. being pretty relaxed about possible human extinction): it seems clear that our default position (subject to some caveats) should be to delay extinction on the grounds that a) it is irreversible (by definition), and b) so as to maximise our option value over the future. In any case, the e/acc view, which seems based on something (not very articulate) something entropy crossed with a taste for unfettered capitalism, is hard to take seriously and might even fail on its own terms. Varieties of extinction The Yudkowsky position (My take on) Eliezer's view is that he fears a misaligned AI (not necessarily superintelligent), acting largely on its own (e.g. goal-formation, planning, actually effecting things in the world), eliminates humans and perhaps all life on Earth. This would be bad, not just for the eliminated humans or their descendants, but also for the universe-at-large in the sense that intelligently-created complexity (of the type that humans generate) is an intrinsic good that requires no further justification. The vast majority of AI designs that Eliezer foresees would, through various chains of events, result in a universe with much less of these intrinsic goods. He spells it out here in the current e/acc context, and clarifies that his view doesn't hinge on the preservation of biological humans (this was useful to know). He has written copiously and aphoristically on this topic, for instance Value is Fragile and the Fun Theory sequence. The Bostrom variant Nick Bostrom's views on human extinction seem to take a more-happy-lives-are-better starting point. My possibly mistaken impression is that, like Eliezer, he seems to value things like art, creativity, love, in the specific sense that a future where they didn't exist would be a much worse one from a cosmic or species-neutral perspective. He describes an 'uninhabited society' that is technologically advanced and builds complex structures, but that 'nevertheless lacks any type of being that is conscious or whose welfare has moral significance' (Chapter 11, p. 173 of Superintelligence (2014)). To my knowledge, he doesn't unpick what precisely about the uninhabited society would actually be bad and for whom (possibly this is well-understood point or a non-question in philosophy, but I'm not sure that is the case, at least judging from (see below) Benatar, Torres, this paper by James Lenman, or for that matter Schopenhauer). Are Jews entitled to their own homeland?  Is the Israeli response to the massacre of civilians perpetrated by Hammas on October 7th justified? Should there be a ceasefire?  David's Article in Quillette: https://quillette.com/2023/10/21/its-not-the-occupation/  Raja Halwani wrote to us about Jason's exposition of his view at 38:50. Here is Raja's clarification: **I wanted to clarify a point that Jason made during the interview with David Benatar. Jason asked Benatar what he thought of the view that “the view is that the Gazans are an oppressed people. They've been oppressed for so long that they've acted out of desperation. And there's only two options that they have.” Jason goes on to say that I have defended the view that “the Gazans are an oppressed people who only have two options. The one option is to die and the other option is to attack, to attack Israel in order to secure some sort of freedom. Those are its only two options. And so ... Raja takes the view that if Hamas were to lay down its arms, then it's just a slow death for the Gazans. That's, that would be the future of Gaza.” However, I did not make this claim about having only two options, nor would I, because it reads as a justification of killing civilians, especially given the context of the Hamas attacks of October 7 (and other attacks against Israelis). It reads as a justification because if death is one of only two options, then the second, to attack, seems permissible. The last sentence in Jason's question, about Hamas laying down its arms, seems to especially imply this (though Jason did not intend to make me come out as justifying Hamas's actions). Jason attributes this view to me based on something I wrote in my blog (as he explained to me in personal correspondence). Here is the specific passage on which Jason bases his attribution: People are quick to condemn Hamas for the evil that it has wrought, but they are as quick to neglect that Hamas acts out of sheer desperation, out of the sheer desire, no matter how steep the price, to score a victory against Israel, a country whose military might not even its prime ministers fully comprehend, and out of the sheer hopelessness of the slow death that their people has been dying. Although to explain this is not to justify it, I also ask the reader: What options do the Palestinians have? What do you advise them to do? Their lives are going nowhere. Peace initiative after peace initiative has failed them (and, to add insult to injury, they are blamed for the failure). No Palestinian state has emerged, and none is likely to given the current map (just look and see whether a state can be built out of the Swiss cheese that is the West Bank). Their tunnel has been long and with no light at its end. So what should they do? They ought to sit still and “take it like a man.” To suck it up. To bear the unfair burden of history. We have to tell them, “Misfortune has fallen upon you, and you may not extricate yourselves from it by killing civilians. Even as you yourselves die, slowly, surely, with no justification, and with barely an explanation, you may not take the lives of the civilians of your enemy. This is the noble way.” Clearly, the passage is a bitter one about Palestinian loss and oppression, but it is as clearly morally ruling out the option of killing civilians. So even though Hamas might take up arms against civilians, this is not a morally viable options for Gazans or Palestinians in general. Hence, insofar as Jason's question attributes to me a justification of attacks on civilians, this clarification should clarify that this is not my position.**

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Philosophical considerations relevant to valuing continued human survival: Conceptual Analysis, Population Axiology, and Decision Theory (Andreas Mogensen), published by Global Priorities Institute on November 1, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This paper was published as a GPI working paper in September 2023. Introduction Many think that human extinction would be a catastrophic tragedy, and that we ought to do more to reduce extinction risk. There is less agreement on exactly why. If some catastrophe were to kill everyone, that would obviously be horrific. Still, many think the deaths of billions of people don't exhaust what would be so terrible about extinction. After all, we can be confident that billions of people are going to die - many horribly and before their time - if humanity does not go extinct. The key difference seems to be that they will be survived by others. What's the importance of that? Some take the view that the special moral importance of preventing extinction is explained in terms of the value of increasing the number of flourishing lives that will ever be lived, since there could be so many people in the vast future available to us (see Kavka 1978; Sikora 1978; Parfit 1984; Bostrom 2003; Ord 2021: 43-49). Others emphasize the moral importance of conserving existing things of value and hold that humanity itself is an appropriate object of conservative valuing (see Cohen 2012; Frick 2017). Many other views are possible (see esp. Scheer 2013, 2018). However, not everyone is so sure that human extinction would be regrettable. In the final section of the last book published in his lifetime, Parfit (2011: 920-925) considers what can actually be said about the value of all future history. No doubt, people will continue to suffer and despair. They will also continue to experience love and joy. Will the good be sufficient to outweigh the bad? Will it all be worth it? Parfit's discussion is brief and inconclusive. He leans toward 'Yes,' writing that our "descendants might, I believe, make the future very good." (Parfit 2011: 923) But 'might' falls far short of 'will'. Others are confidently pessimistic. Some take the view that human lives are not worth starting because of the suffering they contain. Benatar (2006) adopts an extreme version of this view, which I discuss in section 3.3. He claims that "it would be better, all things considered, if there were no more people (and indeed no more conscious life)." (Benatar 2006: 146) Scepticism about the disvalue of human extinction is especially likely to arise among those concerned about our effects on non-human animals and the natural world. In his classic paper defending the view that all living things have moral status, Taylor (1981: 209) argues, in passing, that human extinction would "most likely be greeted with a hearty 'Good riddance!' " when viewed from the perspective of the biotic community as a whole. May (2018) argues similarly that because there "is just too much torment wreaked upon too many animals and too certain a prospect that this is going to continue and probably increase," we should take seriously the idea that human extinction would be morally desirable. Our abysmal treatment of non-human animals may also be thought to bode ill for our potential treatment of other kinds of minds with whom we might conceivably share the future and view primarily as tools: namely, minds that might arise from inorganic computational substrates, given suitable developments in the field of artificial intelligence (Saad and Bradley forthcoming). This paper takes up the question of whether and to what extent the continued existence of humanity is morally desirable. For the sake of brevity, I'll refer to this as the value of the future , leaving the assumption that we conditionalize on human survival impl...

The Blues Brothers Original Soundtrack is a powerhouse collection of rhythm and blues that captures the essence of the iconic film.  It features a blend of classic blues, soul, and rock 'n' roll performed by legendary artists including Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, James Brown, and Cab Calloway.  The Blues Brothers originated as a musical comedy act created by Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi on the sketch comedy show “Saturday Night Live” in the late 1970's.  Inspired by their shared love for blues and R&B music, Aykroyd and Belushi created fictional characters, Jake and Elwood Blues, as their alter egos.  The act gained popularity, leading to the release of their self-titled debut album in 1978 and eventually to the creation of the Blues Brothers motion picture in 1980.  In the film, parolee Jake Blues is joined by his blood brother Elwood Blues on a “mission from God” to save the Catholic orphanage in which they were raised by reuniting their band and raising the $5000.00 for the property tax bill.  Their quest brings them to a number of characters played by iconic artists including Cab Calloway and James Brown.  The resulting soundtrack stands as a testament to the enduring power of blues music and left an indelible mark on both the film and music industry.John Lynch dons his suit and dark sunglasses to bring us this feature. Minnie the MoocherCab Calloway originally presented Minnie the Moocher back in 1931, and reprises the song for this film.  Calloway was a regular performer at the Cotton Club in Harlem, and a popular vocalist of the swing era.  Calloway plays Curtis in the film, a father figure and mentor to the Blues Brothers, and performs this song as a warm-up to the concert.Jailhouse RockAs the movie ends with Jake and Elwood back in prison after successfully paying off the tax bill for the orphanage.  The band plays Elvis Presley's "Jailhouse Rock" for the inmates as the credits roll.  Jake Blues (Belushi) takes lead on this upbeat number.ThinkAretha Franklin covers her own song as Mrs. Murphy, trying to persuade her husband Matt Murphy to not join the band.  Franklin had a lot of difficulty lip synching the song and would have preferred to just sing it live.  The Blues Brothers join her on this cover.Gimme Some Lovin'The Blues Brothers cover this piece originally performed by the Spencer Davis Group and made famous by Steve Winwood.  While the song was a top 20 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, in the film it gets a decidedly cooler reception in the honky tonk bar in which it is performed.  ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Lookin' for Love by Johnny Lee (from the motion picture “Urban Cowboy”)With the decline of disco, crossover country & western hits became popular.  John Travolta starred in this movie which capitalized on the popularity of country music. STAFF PICKS:Train in Vain (Stand By Me) by the ClashBruce brings us the third single from the Clash's third album, “London Calling.”  This was a double album, and a post-punk turn by the group.  The song was originally intended to be a giveaway flexi single, but was put on the album at the last minute when that deal fell through.  Mick Jones wrote and sings lead on this song, inspired by his tumultuous relationship with Stiltz guitarist Viv Albertine.Free Me Big by Roger DaltreyWayne features the front man for the Who in a solo effort written by Argent guitarist Russ Ballard.  The song is on Daltrey's 1980 solo album “McVicar” It also appears on the soundtrack for the movie "McVicar" in which Daltrey plays John McVicar, an inmate in prison for a number of bank robberies.  The other members of the Who play on this song as uncredited musicians. We Live for Love by Pat BenatarRob's staff pick is performed by Benatar, but it is often confused for a Blondie song.  It is a single from Benatar's debut album, “In the Heat of the Night,” and was written by Neil Giraldo, Benatar's then-guitarist and now-husband (and still guitarist).  It was the leading track from side two.Ride Like the Wind by Christopher CrossLynch's staff pick went to number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, held out of the number 1 slot by Blondie's “Call Me.”  It is Cross's debut single from his Grammy winning 1979 self-titled album.  Cross dedicated the song to Lowell George, formerly of the band Little Feat, who had died in 1979.  Michael McDonald is easy to identify on backing vocals.   NOVELTY TRACK:Turning Japanese by the VaporsSongwriter and Vapors lead singer David Fenton says this is all the cliches about angst and youth and turning into something you didn't expect to.  This new wave song went to number 36 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The issues addressed behind the scenes allegedly include creative difficulties with scripts, post-production problems and lackluster visual effects. To prevent Phases 5 and 6 from continuing down a similar path, the report claims Disney could ensure a creative oversight on MCU projects still in the pre-production stage, which in effect could see future projects delayed or outright canceled. It includes some of Paul Rudd's most memorable scenes from Ant-Man, Captain America: Civil War, Ant-Man and The Wasp and Avengers: Endgame, with a brief look at Quantumania. While the Quantumania teaser trailer had already covered most new reveals from the movie, "The Legacy of Ant-Man" does include an ominous new line from the film's villain, Jonathan Majors' Kang the Conquerer.   At the very end of the featurette, Kang can be heard saying, "Your reality, everything you're holding onto -- I know how it ends. You're out of your league, Ant-Man." This dialogue did not appear in the recent trailer, which instead had Kang say, "I can get you home, and give you more time, if you help me. So what's it gonna be, Ant-Man?" This featurette's version is decidedly more threatening than in the teaser trailer, hinting at Kang's status as a time-traveler from the future, which was first alluded to in Season 1 of Loki.   James Gunn Confirms GotG Vol. 3 References 2001: A Space Odyssey, Not Among Us https://www.cbr.com/guardians-of-the-galaxy-vol-3-references-2001-not-among-us/ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 writer-director James Gunn has clarified that the trailer's color-coded space suits are a reference to Stanley Kubrick's 1968 sci-fi epic 2001: A Space Odyssey, not the popular video game Among Us.   On Twitter, well-known cartoonist Scott Kurtz asked Gunn if Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3's colorful space suits were a nod to Among Us. The 18-episode season of Daredevil: Born Again is slated to premiere in 2024, four years after the original Daredevil series ended its run on Netflix after three seasons.   REPORT: Michael Gandolfini Signs on for Multiple MCU Projects https://www.cbr.com/michael-gandolfini-marvel-cinematic-universe-contract/ Actor Michael Gandolfini, known for the Sopranos prequel film The Many Saints of Newark, has reportedly signed a multi-project deal with Marvel that will begin with Daredevil: Born Again.   News that Gandolfini is joining the upcoming Daredevil show on Disney+ came out earlier this week, but according to Murphy's Multiverse, the actor is closing a deal to appear in multiple Marvel Cinematic Universe projects. Gandolfini's role in Daredevil: Born Again has not been revealed, but this contract suggests that his character will reappear in future MCU shows or movies later down the line. For his first Marvel role, he's working alongside Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock and Vincent D'Onofrio as Wilson Fisk, both of whom are reprising their roles from Netflix's hit Daredevil TV show.   I Don't Know What Christmas Is (But Christmastime Is Here) (From "The Guardians of the … https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-E1ULv6LcOk https://www.cbr.com/gotg-holiday-special-karaoke-marvel-christmas-carol/ Marvel shared a clip from The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special, featuring a sing-a-long of the original song "I Don't Know What Christmas Is (But Christmastime is Here)."   The video features the alt-country band Old 97's as a group of alien musicians who attempt to make sense of Peter Quill's confusing Yuletide lore. Writer/director James Gunn discussed writing the song with frontman Rhett Miller, saying, "I had all these lyrics for it, and it kept changing. I walked around my house, singing into my iPhone and trying to figure out how the song was going to work. And finally, I approached Rhett and asked, 'Will you help me write this song? Because I can't do it by myself.' And he said, 'Absolutely.' And so we started sending tons of recordings and lyrics back and forth, and we wrote that song together."   OUTRO AND BONUS AUDIO [1:14:43]   We would love to hear back from you! Check the website here: http://enlites.com/ Dr. David Benatar is professor of philosophy at the University of Cape Town in Cape Town, South Africa. He is best known for his advocacy of anti-natalism in his book Better Never to Have Been: The Harm of Coming into Existence, in which he argues that coming into existence is a serious harm, regardless of the feelings of the existing being once brought into existence, and that, as a consequence, it is always morally wrong to create more sentient beings. His new book is The Fall of the University of Cape Town: Africa's Leading University in Decline. In this episode, we focus on The Fall of the University of Cape Town. Dr. Benatar gives us a brief overview of how the decline at UCT started, how it was dealt with, and the demands made by the students. We talk about terms like “transformation” and “decolonization” of the curricula. We discuss the role of university, and academic freedom. We talk about racial issues in South Africa, affirmative action, cancel culture, and identity politics. Finally, we ask if there are any good solutions to what is happening at UCT. -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS/SUPPORTERS: KARIN LIETZCKE, ANN BLANCHETTE, PER HELGE LARSEN, LAU GUERREIRO, JERRY MULLER, HANS FREDRIK SUNDE, BERNARDO SEIXAS, HERBERT GINTIS, RUTGER VOS, RICARDO VLADIMIRO, CRAIG HEALY, OLAF ALEX, PHILIP KURIAN, JONATHAN VISSER, JAKOB KLINKBY, ADAM KESSEL, MATTHEW WHITINGBIRD, ARNAUD WOLFF, TIM HOLLOSY, HENRIK AHLENIUS, JOHN CONNORS, PAULINA BARREN, FILIP FORS CONNOLLY, DAN DEMETRIOU, ROBERT WINDHAGER, RUI INACIO, ARTHUR KOH, ZOOP, MARCO NEVES, COLIN HOLBROOK, SUSAN PINKER, PABLO SANTURBANO, SIMON COLUMBUS, PHIL KAVANAGH, JORGE ESPINHA, CORY CLARK, MARK BLYTH, ROBERTO INGUANZO, MIKKEL STORMYR, ERIC NEURMANN, SAMUEL ANDREEFF, FRANCIS FORDE, TIAGO NUNES, BERNARD HUGUENEY, ALEXANDER DANNBAUER, FERGAL CUSSEN, YEVHEN BODRENKO, HAL HERZOG, NUNO MACHADO, DON ROSS, JONATHAN LEIBRANT, JOÃO LINHARES, OZLEM BULUT, NATHAN NGUYEN, STANTON T, SAMUEL CORREA, ERIK HAINES, MARK SMITH, J.W., JOÃO EIRA, TOM HUMMEL, SARDUS FRANCE, DAVID SLOAN WILSON, YACILA DEZA-ARAUJO, IDAN SOLON, ROMAIN ROCH, DMITRY GRIGORYEV, TOM ROTH, DIEGO LONDOÑO CORREA, YANICK PUNTER, ADANER USMANI, CHARLOTTE BLEASE, NICOLE BARBARO, ADAM HUNT, PAWEL OSTASZEWSKI, AL ORTIZ, NELLEKE BAK, KATHRINE AND PATRICK TOBIN, GUY MADISON, GARY G HELLMANN, SAIMA AFZAL, ADRIAN JAEGGI, NICK GOLDEN, PAULO TOLENTINO, JOÃO BARBOSA, JULIAN PRICE, EDWARD HALL, HEDIN BRØNNER, DOUGLAS P.
