Tyler welcomes comedy writer David Quantick to celebrate the 1965 film One Way Pendulum starring Goon Show alumnus Eric Sykes. Adapted by NF Simpson from his own 1959 Royal Court play and directed by Peter Yates (fresh off Summer Holiday, soon to make Bullitt), Eric plays suburban dad Arthur Groomkirby, who is quietly building a full-scale Old Bailey in his living room while his son Kirby (Jonathan Miller) teaches speak-your-weight machines to sing the Hallelujah Chorus in the attic. Meanwhile, daughter Sylvia (Julia Foster) obsesses over her arms and Aunt Mildred (Mona Washbourne) witters endlessly about transport. Rounding out the madness are Peggy Mount as the food-dispatching charlady and George Cole, Graham Crowden & Douglas Wilmer in a superb hallucinatory courtroom sequence. The comparisons to the Goon Show are obvious. David – who met Simpson – explains how his very British absurdism (Lewis Carroll meets Kafka with actual laughs) cloaks the bizarre inside the banal which none of his characters question. The humour is in the mismatch between the bland domestic surroundings and the offbeat conversations therein.
The story that keeps getting my goat this week has been the accusation that New Zealanders take too many holidays over the Christmas-January period. It's burbled along since the weekend. Business owners, economists, Simon Bridges, and talkback callers all alleging that the country closes down for a month and that's killing our productivity. But there's no proof of that and the allegations seem little better than reckons. Let's remember that the rest of the Christian world are also off for Christmas-New Year, so we're not losing competitiveness over that week. And the northern hemisphere closes down for August while we're working our butts off. Maybe some of the people moaning about the summer break have lost track of reality for most New Zealand workers. The minimum statuary leave for most New Zealanders is 4 weeks after a year of employment. 20 precious days that week out over 12 months. There are four big school holiday periods that parents need to think about. For most New Zealanders, a big summer holiday might last until the second week of January and the longer you take over summer the longer you have to work over the rest of the year. Only a few people casually skive off for January. The successful business owners who have managers in place. The semi retired. And the superstars whose success during the year grants them privilege - I'm looking at you Mike Hosking. And the other group are the lawyers, partly because courts close down. But while judges have nice summer holidays they're only allowed a week in Spring during the rest of the year. So the lawyers bugger off to their beautiful baches. And that's why lawyers were the most concerned at the dropping of the new Resource Management system this week with a 6 week submission period. It means they're going to have to work all summer. Like the rest of us. And that's why they're grumpy.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The length of New Zealand's summer holiday - isn't as bad for the economy as some may think. Prime Minister Chris Luxon's weighed in on debate - saying after working overseas, he's used to returning to work about January 3 - which he'll probably do again this summer. Infometrics Chief Executive, Brad Olsen, says supermarkets and tourism boom over the period. He says the professional services industry shuts down longer, but that's not the entire economy. Olsen says March quarterly GDP relative to average quarterly GDP - and it's only two percent below the average for the rest of the financial year. The debate over out long summer break is heating up. An op-ed from businessman Toss Grimley claims New Zealand's extended shutdown hurts productivity, a stance backed up by Auckland Business Chamber CEO Simon Bridges. Bridges says there's a real perception the country “shuts down until March”, and that we're seen more as “lifestylers” than serious businesspeople. Massey University Professor of Innovation and Economics, Christoph Schumacher told Heather du Plessis-Allan that while our summer break is long compared to the rest of the world, the question shouldn't be if it's too long, but rather if we can afford it. He says people do deserve breaks, but it needs to be structured a smarter way to keep productivity high. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Summer holidays is just around the corner and kids will be rushing out the door to spend as much time as they can with their friends. But this time of year is often the longest period that parents will be able to spend time at home with the family. We don't want to pull our children away from their friends, but we also want to instil the value of family time. So where do we draw the line between family time and friend time for our children this summer? LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Spending abroad has bounced back to pre-pandemic levels, having plummeted in 2020 and 2021, when travel restrictions were in place. Still, while many of us are making up for lost time when it comes to holidays, there's also the small matter of a cost of living crisis to deal with. The podcast has thrown a tantrum and screamed and screamed and all of us involved in its making have had to sit it in the car with a lil' sippy cup, a lollypop, its favourite teddybear (a fluffy Simba of course), and throw on a ton of easy to sing-a-long playtime jams on the stereo, while we drive it to the seaside where heaven help us we may all get some peace. So thank you for being here, and for being cool and patient while we all resume our composure. Everyone exhausted after that extended metaphor? I can only assume so. It's that time of year where the sun is out for more than 10 minutes a day over here in England, so that must mean it's summer holiday! I'll be off for just a short two weeks, but until then, I thought I'd introduce a podcast to you. It's a great, Dark History podcast, which I shall leave to their own words: Macabrium Lore & Legends Subscribe here: https://podfollow.com/1695858163 “The 13th Child: The Jersey Devil” In the New Jersey Pine Barrens, where the trees grow dense and the roads give way to tangled wilderness, something stirs. The locals say you can hear it on the coldest nights—a high-pitched shriek, something not quite human, not quite beast. The stories go back centuries. Some say it was a curse, an omen of misfortune that slithered into this world on a storm-wracked night. Others claim it was the child of a mother who, in her desperation or her rage, called upon the Devil himself. The details shift with time, but the warning remains the same: stay out of the pines after dark. Because if you listen closely, past the rustling leaves and the distant howl of the wind, you might just hear the beat of leathery wings. And by then, it's already too late. *A summer holiday special*I put a call out for questions for the podcast and had SO MANY messages about the school summer holidays. Then Penny Brazier sent me THIS message and we agreed it was a brilliant idea.Penny says:“I'm eternally curious about how people tackle the summer holidays once they've got school age kids. It's an impossible equation and there's no one answer, but I feel like we can maybe come closer to our own personal truth by hearing how other people do it — to try and glean some inspiration. What about an episode where you gather responses *first* and then go over them? Including yours and Steve's own methods?I'm sure the DIFTK crew have hacks we don't know about!”What would your advice be?
