Justin and Bec forego a typical main topic this week, opting instead for effectively two main topics with absolutely massive, iconic Songs of the Week! Bec's Song of the Week is "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" and she explores the roots of it from the 1965 Italian ballad "Io che non vive (senza te)" through to Dusty Springfield's hugely successful English adaptation and eventually to Elvis's famous performances of it in the 1970s, across his 1970 Nashville sessions, the concerts filmed for "That's The Way It Is," and even much later and deeper into the decade. Justin then traces the lineage of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller's legendary "Trouble," originally featured in the 1958 film "King Creole," but increasingly recognized over the years as one of Elvis's most enduring recordings, symbolizing the myth of him as a rebellious rocker, most prominently recently featured in Baz Luhrmann's "Elvis." We go deeper, though, touching on the history of stop-time in Dixieland jazz and, most influentially on Leiber/Stoller, in Muddy Waters's "Hoochie Coochie Man." Understanding the history behind that song, the hoochie coochie itself, and the way Trouble has become representative of expressions of both masculinity and femininity unlocks a deeper sense of the song's significance as one of the all-time masterpieces of Elvis's entire recorded works. Oh yeah, and the duo react to the first trailer for Disney's live action remake of Lilo & Stitch! If you enjoy TCBCast, please consider supporting us with a donation at Patreon.com/TCBCast. Your support allows us to continue to provide thoughtful, provocative, challenging and well-researched perspectives on Elvis's career, his peers and influences, and his cultural impact and legacy.

The Coasters were formed 69 years ago this month, when two members of an L.A.-based R&B group called The Robins came east to join Atlantic Records. The new group was dubbed The Coasters because they crossed the continent to come together.About the same time, songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller produced “Smokey Joe's Cafe" for The Robins (their sixth for the group). Atlantic liked the tune so much, the company offered Leiber and Stoller an independent production contract to bring The Robins to Atlantic. However, when only two Robins — Carl Gardner and Bobby Nunn — wanted to make the move to New York, the new Coasters were born; the group's association with Leiber and Stoller was a match made in rock ‘n' roll heaven. The Family Flood grew up singing, laughing and dancing to The Coasters' string of good-humored storytelling hits. Theirs were some of the most joyful radio moments of the 1950s and early ‘60s, starting with “Down in Mexico,” “Young Blood” and “Searchin',” quickly followed by “Yakety Yak,” “Charlie Brown,” “Poison Ivy,” “Little Egypt.”About This SongAs reported earlier, the song featured in this video that Pamela Bowen shot at a recent rehearsal dropped into The Coaster's world in 1957, and various incarnations of The Flood have played it for the past four decades. (For more on that part of the story, click here.)For this latest rendition, the guys were joined by Floodster Emeritus Paul Martin who dropped by to sit in for the evening. This is a public episode. The Long, Crazy, Never-Ending Story of Big Mama Thornton's “Hound Dog”

Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs

This week our hosts Brittany and Rob look at one of the longest, craziest stories in pop music: the never-ending saga of “Hound Dog.” Big Mama Thornton came out with this massive R&B belter in 1952 and was the first hit from the legendary writing team of Jerry Lieber and Mike Stoller. The song comes in at #318 on the list, and instantly became a cultural phenomenon, inspiring countless cover versions, answer songs, rewrites and sequels in blues, pop, and country. The most notable was Elvis Presley's version of Hound Dog” in 1956, but he wasn't covering Big Mama Thornton's song – these were two very different tunes with the same title, and the only thing they had in common was the opening line, “You ain't nothing but a hound dog.” In this episode, Brittany and Rob dive deep into the secret history of “Hound Dog” and why time has simplified the story to being between Big Mama and Elvis. Rolling Stone senior writer Angie Martoccio also joins us to look at the song and its complex cultural afterlife. Together we celebrate the greatness of Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton, and the incredible power of her “Hound Dog”. For a song that's continued to change constantly throughout the past 70 years after it first became a hit, there's really no other story in music history like this one. From Jimi Hendrix to Doja Cat, we look at how “Hound Dog” keeps on inspiring sequels and likely will for the rest of history.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

"Is That All There Is?", a song written by American songwriting team Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller during the 1960s, became a hit for American singer Peggy Lee and an award winner from her album of the same title in November 1969. The song was originally performed by Georgia Brown in May 1967 for a television special. It was first recorded by disc jockey Dan Daniel in March 1968, but this was an unauthorized recording that, while played on Daniel's own radio show, went unissued at the songwriters' request. The first authorized recording was by Leslie Uggams in August 1968. Then came the hit Peggy Lee version in August 1969, followed by Guy Lombardo in 1969 and Tony Bennett on 22 December 1969.[2]Peggy Lee's version reached number 11 on the U.S. pop singles chart — becoming her first Top 40 pop hit since "Fever" eleven years earlier—and doing even better on the adult contemporary scene, topping that Billboardchart. It also reached number six in Canada. It won Lee the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, and then later was named to the Grammy Hall of Fame. The orchestral arrangement on the song was composed by Randy Newman, who played the piano in the slower introduction section,[3] and who also conducted the orchestra.[4]LyricsThe lyrics of this song are written from the point of view of a person who is disillusioned with events in life that are supposedly unique experiences. The singer tells of witnessing her family's house on fire when she was a little girl, seeing the circus, and falling in love for the first time. After each recital, she expresses her disappointment in the experience. She suggests that we "break out the booze and have a ball—if that's all there is," instead of worrying about life. She explains that she'll never kill herself either because she knows that death will be a disappointment as well. The verses of the song are spoken, rather than sung. Only the refrain of the song is sung.

Thomas was performing with The Five Crowns at the Apollo Theater in 1958 when George Treadwell fired his group, called The Drifters. Treadwell recruited the Five Crowns to become the new Drifters. Although the Five Crowns never made any impression on the national charts under their own name, they regularly charted locally in New York and were stars in Harlem. The new Drifters' first release was the 1959 hit "There Goes My Baby".  This version of the group released the smash "There Goes My Baby," working for the first time with legendary songwriter/producers Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, and followed with a string of hits including the top 10 "Save The Last Dance For Me" and "This Magic Moment." Charlie was lead singer on two of the group's top 40 hits, "Sweets for My Sweet" and "When My Little Girl Is Smiling". Their late-'50s incarnation, featuring original members Doc Green, James Clark, Elsbeary Hobbs, Ben E. King, and Charles Thomas, became the post-1958 Drifters, responsible for "There Goes My Baby" and the core of the group that later recorded "Up on the Roof," "Under the Boardwalk," and "On Broadway."Most of The Drifters biggest hits featured different lead singers:Ben E. ELLIE GREENWICH -SONGWRITER HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE- 1991Ellie Greenwich is one of the most successful songwriters of the modern pop music era. She was one of the major influences on the 60's rock and roll, a music that continues alive and well today. Her songs, which have sold in the tens of millions, have earned her 25 gold and platinum records.Born in Brooklyn, her young life was filled with singing and dancing recitals and winning first prize in a local newspaper's poetry contest. At 11, she moved to Levittown, Long Island, and her musical career became serious when she took up the accordion and by 13, was writing songs. Along with two high school friends, she formed her first "girls group," The Jivettes, and the trio performed original songs at hospitals, schools and charity benefits throughout Long Island.About this time, Greenwich's mother arranged a meeting for Ellie with Cadence Records president Archie Bleyer (of Everly Brothers and Chordettes fame). His advice to "keep writing but finish school... the music business will always be there," stuck in the young writer's head and she did just that. She attended Hofstra University, was its Spring Queen and graduated with top honors with a BA degree in English, and a listing in "Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities."During her latter years in college, she met Jeff Barry at a family gathering and the two became good friends almost immediately. "He was the first male I could actually harmonize with," she recalls. Eventually, the couple married and went on to become co-writers of some of the most memorable classic rock hits. After graduation in 1962 and following a High School English teaching career which lasted three and one half weeks, she began free-lancing and working out of the offices of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, a pair of hot songwriters in their own right, in Broadway's Brill Building, one of the music business headquarters of that time. She wrote songs with Doc Pomus and Tony Powers and enjoyed her first chart successes with "This Is It," by Jay and the Americans, and "He's Got the Power," by the Exciters. She and Barry formed The Raindrops, who skimmed the top 16 with "What a Guy" and "The Kind of Boy You Can't Forget."Teaming with Phil Spector, the two managed number one hits with "Be My Baby," "Da Doo Ron Ron," "And Then He Kissed Me," "Chapel of Love" and "River Deep, Mountain High." Greenwich and Barry also continued their successes with such number one smashes as "Hanky Panky," and co-written with Shadow Morton, the epic, "Leader of the Pack." During these years, too, Greenwich reigned as one of New York's top demo singers and session vocal arrangers/singers, working with artists ranging from Dusty Springfield and Lesley Gore to Ella Fitzgerald, Bobby Darin and Frank Sinatra. During one of the many demo sessions in which she was involved, Greenwich met and "discovered" Neil Diamond and went on to co-produce such early Diamond hits as "Cherry Cherry" and "Kentucky Woman," doing background vocals as well.During the latter part of the 60's, Greenwich found continued success in collaborations with Bob Crewe, in writing for The Hardy Boys TV series, and in singing on popular commercials for Cheerios

Today we hear the personal journey of a dear friend of mine, John Arthur Greene, an actor, singer and songwriter. John reflects on the impact that the pause during the pandemic's lockdown had on his career and mindset. John walked away from the entertainment industry after 26 years, performing on Broadway for 8 shows a week, and more. He talks about how difficult his career has been on his body, not always in a healthy way. John and I crossed paths during my time intensively treating Broadway performers so we were able to reflect on what health meant to him years ago compared to how he feels about it now. He discusses the type of physical and mental regiment that he endured to maintain excellent physique and mindset and succeed in the industry. For John, times of prayer, meditation, and stillness with God are the most important aspects of his daily practice now. John's notable work:He was most recently seen as Walker Jerome the Blouse Man in the East Coast Premier of A Walk On The Moon at the pre-Broadway house George St. Playhouse. Some of his other credits include: Stand-By for 5 Principle Characters, the Fight Captain & Dance Captain in the revival of Stephan Sondheim's Company (Broadway). U/S Max Van Horn in Tootsie (Broadway), Theo - the lead singer of “No Vacancy” in School of Rock (Broadway); American Idol Season 15 - Farewell Season (FOX), Riff in West Side Story (Broadway); Doctor, U/S Mr. Wormwood in Matilda (Broadway); Robert Mullins in Peter Pan Live (NBC); Luke in Mim (Off-Broadway); Jonathan in Tick Tick Boom… (LA); Action in West Side Story (50th Anniversary European Tour); Jack Kelly in Newsies (Maltz Jupiter); Riff in West Side Story (Boston Pops Symphony); Danny in Grease (NCT - BroadwayWorld.com Award For Best Actor In A Musical) just to name a few. He performs solo's and his solo music all over the world, singing “Oh Holy Night” for ABC 11's 2020 Happy Holiday's Special; “Heavens On Their Minds” for the promotion of NBC's Jesus Christ Superstar Live with the kids from School Of Rock on Broadway, “Gethsemane” for Andrew Lloyd Webber's New York Times Talk and “Jailhouse Rock” for Mike Stoller's 80th Birthday Celebration. His Latest Single “LiNE & THE LETTiNG GO” is out along with “March On!”, “Wild & Free”, “Hold Onto Me”, “Easy”, “Brooklyn”, “Takes Me Back” & his Debut EP “Shadows Of Light” are all now available on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon and YouTube under his own record label JAG Records. The music videos for “LiNE & THE LETTiNG GO”, “March On!”, “Over & Over”, “Wild & Free”,  “Easy” & “Creep” are available on YouTube. John runs a Prayer & Worship Ministry called REViAL SESSiONS which went global in 2017 reaching 18 different countries. After spending 15 years away, John is now back and has accepted the call to serve as the Worship Pastor at New Hope Church in Durham. Connect with him:www.johnarthurgreenemusic.com.

Picking right back up where they left off, Justin, Gurdip and Darin continue examining the material recorded in March 1962, now beginning to fully take shape as the album that would come to be known as "Pot Luck." There's still a lot of Latin-flavored pop mixed in with country ballads, but things get really heated (and fun!) when Darin and Gurdip go head to head over "Suspicion" and the differences between Elvis's recording and Terry Stafford's hit cover. Then, for Song of the Week, Darin brings attention to the underrated "Please Don't Stop Loving Me" from the movie Frankie and Johnny, and its source, an Italian pop ballad known as "Non ho l'età (per amarti)." Gurdip, meanwhile, picks "Danny," the alternative title song for "King Creole" that wasn't released until 1978's "A Legendary Performer Volume 3." Lastly, Darin picks a song for Justin, "I Want To Be Free," famously from 1957's Jailhouse Rock. Upon revisiting the outtakes, Justin uncovers a possible previously-unnoted influence on Mike Stoller's piano-playing on the more polished version released on the original Jailhouse Rock EP.  All this and more on this second part covering the Pot Luck sessions and album! Baz Luhrmann's hit box office hit biopic Elvis has spurred new interest in the music of The King. Elvis Presley's streaming subscribers has grown by two million listeners on Spotify since the film's release according to ChartMetric, and if you're hearing a lot more “Hound Dog” these days, it might be partially due to the success of Doja Cat's hit song “Vegas,” which updates – and interpolates – the song for contemporary listeners.  Doja Cat's version samples from the original 1953 “Hound Dog,” sung by Big Mama Thornton and written by acclaimed songwriter team Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller (whose credits also include Presley's “Jailhouse Rock” and Ben E. King's “Stand By Me”). The original is a sauntering blues song with a raunchy tale about a two timing man; Presley, who is frequently said to have stolen the song from Thorton, instead sings a tepid lyric about an actual dog, and radically changes the groove.  But in an interview with Rolling Stone, Stoller says Presley didn't steal the song at all. Rather, he adapted one of many covers of the song, specifically the version performed by the Las Vegas lounge act Freddie Bell and the Bellboys. Their “Hound Dog” borrows its upbeat rhythm from a song responding to the original “Hound Dog,” titled “Bear Cat.” It's a similar rhythm to the one we hear on the contemporary Doja Cat version, “Vegas,” which heavily features samples of Thornton's original vocals: listening closely reveals a song that synthesizes a complicated music history by uniting the best parts of the many versions of “Hound Dog.”  Listen to the latest episode of Switched On Pop and uncover the long legacy of “Hound Dog.” Songs Discussed Big Mama Thorton - Hound Dog Elvis - Hound Dog Doja Cat - Vegas Esther Phillips - Hound Dog Jack Turner - Hound Dog Rufus Thomas - Bear Cat Freddie Bell and the Bellboys T.L.C. - No Scrubs Sporty Thievz - No Pigeons  W.C. We mark the death on July 25, 1984 – 38 years ago today – of the American Rhythm and Blues singer Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton.  Born on December 11, 1926, she died in Los Angeles of both heart and liver disease brought on by alcohol abuse.  According to Gillian Gaar, writing in She's a Rebel: The History of Women in Rock & Roll (Seal Press, 1992), during the brief period of her final illness, Thornton went from 450 pounds (Big Momma!) to 95 pounds, a weight loss of some 355 pounds. Thornton scored her one-and-only hit when, on August 13, 1952, she recorded a brand-new, 12-bar blues song by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller entitled Hound Dog.   Released by Peacock Records in February 1953, Big Mama Thornton's Hound Dog sold over 500,000 copies and spent fourteen weeks on the Rhythm and Blues charts, seven of those fourteen weeks at number one.  Thornton's recording is linked below: (By the way: please ignore the photo of Josephine Baker at the top of the link; Big Momma's left leg was bigger than all of Madame Baker.) Thornton's recording of Hound Dog was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2013 […] The post Music History Monday: Under the Covers first appeared on Robert Greenberg.

I am an Elvis fan and rock 'n' roll fan who was blessed to be able to interview my life-long heroes such as songwriters. Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller,  and my delight shows in this "Singles" edition of my podcast. It is less than five minutes long but has a world exclusive! Leiber and Stoller not only telling me how that great blues for Elvis, Santa Claus is Back in Town, came about, but also singing a "blue" blues tune called Bow-Legged Woman. If this doesn't make you smile, or laugh, we must be on different frequencies, I am afraid!  Enjoy

The Joe Jackson Interviews
Joe Jackson asks Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, "So guys, is Jailhouse Rock a gay love song?" And they they talk about Elvis and Hound Dog.

I was born, at the age of ten, or rather, reborn, the day I discovered rock 'n' roll via an old Elvis single called I Need Your Love Tonight. I died a little when Elvis died in 1977. It fragmented my life in ways, as I say in the intro to this podcast. But it also sent me off on a life-long quest to talk with, among all my hundreds of celebrity interviewees, anyone who knew or worked with Elvis. I also regard Leiber and Stoller as the best songwriters in the early years of rock 'n' roll and beyond. And during a ninety-minute interview, we did in their office in LA in 2005, I finally got to ask them, just for fun, and for the history books, if Jailhouse Rock is a gay love song. We certainly had so much fun that day and there will be more Leiber and Stoller podcasts from me, and a digital magazine based on the interview
