Hey free coffee…want any? Yeah, it does suck! Thanks for letting us use this in our commercial!! ← Do you think this scenario could really happen? Well, the boys at YKS don't, and that's why they came out with Episode 314 of the program, and not any other contractual, financial, or sheer inertia-based reasons! On today's show we're doing a very short and unsatisfying investigation into how fruit flies pork each other, and yes of course buttwiping technology returns as a focal point of the conversation as well. Host Deardra Shuler talks with Malaika Uwamahoro (pronounced Mah-Like-ah Ooh-wam-ah-har-oh) who is a young actor, spoken word poet-performer, singer, and social justice artist. She will be performing the central character plus 9 others in the critically acclaimed play “Miracle in Rwanda,” at the Lion Theater on Theater Row off-Broadway beginning April 4, 2019. The run of the play coincides with this 25th anniversary of the historic massacre in Rwanda where 800,000 lives were lost. “I am so happy to pass on this role to a woman of Rwandan heritage. Malaika is a brilliant actress, and she brings a sensibility that will move and inspire the audience. I can’t wait for the world to see her work,” said Leslie Lewis. MIRACLE IN RWANDA chronicles the dramatic events of Rwandan Genocide Survivor Immaculée Ilibagiza. The message is one of personal empowerment, of overcoming all obstacles through the power of faith, forgiveness and ultimately finding peace of mind amidst unbelievable hardship. The play runs from APRIL 4 - APRIL 21.
This is a sort of unique edition of Limited Engagement. Jared got an opportunity to attend this year's Innings Festival as a member of the media. Only problem is no one on the bill was doing interviews (at least no one who responded), so what to do? Well, wing it. This episode is a recap of the two day event broken up by a couple of mini interviews--the first with Jason Woodbury about his work with Zia Records and their pop-up record shop/artist signing tent; the second with Ed Masley about how he covers events such as this for the AZ Republic (as well as a few pointers for a media rookie). The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pantsuits Theatre Collective https://www.thesisterhoodofthetravelingpantsuitstheatrecollective.com/ Opening Music by the fabulous CARLY OZARD http://carlyozard.com/ ----more---- Inspired by the writings of radical feminist philosopher and theologian Mary Daly, #GetGandhi - A Seriously Radical Feminist Comedy Is a world premiere, multi-character play written by award-winning playwright and actor Anne Galjour focusing on Mahatma Gandhi's infamous experiments in brahmacharya, or celibacy. Gandhi would have a young woman disrobe and sleep with him completely naked as a test to prove his seminal continence and his purity of spirit. Gandhi never saw anything wrong with this practice, but a small coven of old school bra-burning San Francisco feminists do. They plot to avenge these sex crimes. They set out for the Gandhi memorial statue, located on the Embarcadero in San Francisco, to rip it from its base, and drag it up Market Street in the middle of the night. The play focuses on the women, their families, the backlash from their Generation X children as well as the conflict that is fueled from opposing responses to the revered hero's celibacy experiments. To Bob, the male character who is a longtime practitioner of Gandhi's principles of nonviolence, his hero is flawed. To his female counterparts, this flawed prince of peace is an imposter and sexual abuser. #GetGandhi explores the themes of sexual assault and the removal of statues of historical figures once deemed heroic. #GetGandhi is extremely timely as it extends critical conversation on these issues. It is meant to be a forum that opens up dialogue in the Bay Area and beyond. As each character in the play views Gandhi's actions through a different lens it is hoped that diverse audiences will engage in the debate. #GetGandhi bring together some of the finest Bay Area theatrical writing and acting talent on one stage. SF favorite monologist and playwright & professor Anne Galjour (Alligator Tales, Hurricane) returns with this timely World Premiere, joined with gifted actors: Jeri Lynn Cohen (Word for Word, Magic), Patricia Silver (Word for Word, Z Collective), and Howard Swain (Aurora, ACT), Miranda Swain (ACT) and Lyndsy Kail* (Center Rep). (Miranda Swain is the daughter of Howard Swain and Nancy Carlin.) To top it off #GetGandhi is directed by renown director, actor and teacher Nancy Carlin (Shotgun, Marin Theatre Co.) This week's Limited Engagement features four of the five members of The SunPunchers: Betsy Ganz, Jon Rauhouse, Serena Fonze, and Dominic Armstrong (Lindsay Cates was not in attendance). These four fantastic musicians crammed their gear into our front room, played two gorgeous songs ("Hold You Now" and "Sodium Pentothal Blues"), then sat and talked to me for about an hour or so. Have I ever mentioned how much I love having musicians on the show? If I haven't, you should know that it is a tremendous amount.
