This podcast reports a severe flu season, with hospitalizations exceeding previous years and rising pediatric flu deaths. A Texas measles outbreak, mainly in unvaccinated children, has reached nearly 60 cases, with more in New Mexico, highlighting vaccine decline risks. Research finds moderate to vigorous leisure activity lowers type 2 diabetes risk, while strenuous work activity does not. A UCLA study questions Paxlovid's effectiveness in preventing COVID-19 hospitalizations in vaccinated older adults, raising cost-effectiveness concerns.

It's been five years since the first laboratory-confirmed case of COVID-19 in the U.S., a bleak milestone in the early days of a pandemic that touched the lives of everyone. For the lucky ones, the virus mainly meant more precautions: mask-wearing, the occasional COVID test. But for others, a COVID-19 infection turned into long COVID. This is a chronic condition that lingers long after a COVID infection, and can reduce one's ability to live their day-to-day life. It's been estimated that about 400 million people worldwide have had long COVID. Some researchers say that number is much higher. But there's a lack of research on successful treatments for long COVID.Some patients living with the condition have taken things into their own hands. A recent investigation documented the experiences of 13 long COVID patients who tried taking Paxlovid for longer than the typical 5-day course. The patients had mixed results, adding to a growing body of evidence that there will not be one silver bullet for treating the condition.Joining Ira to talk about the results are two authors of the study, who have both had long COVID for years: Dr. Alison Cohen, assistant professor of epidemiology and biostatistics at the University of California San Francisco, and Dr. Julia Moore Vogel, senior program director at Scripps Research in La Jolla, California.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. Children raised on farms or with pets appear to have a lower risk of allergies due to early gut microbiota differentiation, as highlighted by a study from the Farm Flora Birth Cohort. Managing food allergies durin travel remains challenging, with a global survey showing inconsistent airline policies and unmet preventive measures. FDA trials indicate that resistance to Paxlovid in mild to moderate COVID-19 cases is rare. Lastly, the FDA has updated the Healthy Nutrient Content Claim to encourage healthier food options by promoting reformulation by manufacturers and developing a "healthy" symbol for consumer ease.

Understanding Medicare Part D and the Inflation Reduction Act Kathe Kline is joined by Andrew Saul, Sales Director at Physicians Mutual, to delve into the complexities surrounding Medicare Part D and the changes ushered in by the Inflation Reduction Act. Key points of discussion included the new $2,000 out-of-pocket cap and its impact on seniors, along with price negotiation for prescription drugs. One of the major hurdles discussed was the inability of Medicare to negotiate drug prices, which has historically driven up costs for seniors. Andrew Saul illustrated this disparity with the example of Eliquis, a popular blood thinner. Non-Medicare recipients might pay $10 a month, while those on Medicare face costs upwards of $500 monthly without manufacturer coupons. Kathe shared her firsthand experience with prescription costs during her recent COVID-19 quarantine. The difficulty in navigating prescriptions, particularly the high cost and obstacles to obtaining Paxlovid, highlighted a larger issue within the system. She emphasized the restrictions Medicare beneficiaries face with manufacturer coupons, which can drastically reduce prescription costs for others. Andrew and Kathe explored the balancing act between allowing pharmaceutical companies to profit while ensuring fair drug pricing. Even with laws like the Insulin Savers Act capping prices, the lack of generic options keeps costs high. Andrew noted that new regulations will enable Medicare to negotiate prices for 10 high-cost drugs starting in 2026, but the scale of change is limited. The Inflation Reduction Act, passed in August 2022, is poised to bring changes such as Medicare's newfound ability to negotiate drug prices. Despite this advancement, critics argue for a more comprehensive and expedited implementation. Kathe contrasted the U.S. healthcare system with Europe's, noting Europe's more effective cost management due to direct government negotiations with drug manufacturers. Andrew offered insights into upcoming changes and the importance of well-informed agents in guiding clients through Medicare's intricacies. He emphasized that periodic drug plan reviews are crucial for cost savings. As we await further changes prompted by the Inflation Reduction Act, staying informed and proactive remains essential for Medicare beneficiaries and advisors alike. President Joe Biden has tested positive for COVID-19, the White House announced yesterday. He is experiencing mild symptoms, like a runny nose and a nonproductive cough. Biden is both vaccinated and boosted against the virus. After delivering a speech in Las Vegas, he will return to Delaware to self-isolate, continuing his duties remotely. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre assured the media that the President will keep performing his full responsibilities, and Biden's doctors noted that his vitals were normal as he started the Paxlovid treatment. The diagnosis comes amid rising pressure from Democrats, some of whom are questioning his campaign for reelection. Despite his illness, Biden remains committed, he says, to his role, emphasizing his determination to serve. The White House has promised regular updates on his health. The development follows Biden's previous positive COVID-19 test in July 2022, adding to the political tension as the November elections approach. Learn more about your ad choices. The subpoena, issued by House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R., Ky.), seeks Cheatle's testimony at a congressional hearing scheduled for the morning of July 22.
