Threads From The National Tapestry: Stories From The American Civil War
About this episode: As we've seen in the one presidential debate this election year, a performance has consequences. Although it was not for the office of chief executive, we turn over time's shoulder to speak of another storied debate - in 1858 and for the office of U.S. senator. This is the story of a series of face-to-face confrontations that may not have had immediate ramifications but most certainly resonated two years later when, on the eve of civil war, the two both pursued the office of President of The United States. This is the story of the Lincoln-Douglas Debates. ----more---- Some Characters Mentioned In This Episode: Stephen A. Douglas Lyman Trumbull John C. The Agora Foundation has been a key part of the intellectual landscape of Ojai for a decade now, bringing in top teachers for bracing and wide-ranging discussions of the Great Books Seminars. Executive director Andy Gilman was a co-founder of Agora as well as of the well-received Ojai Chautauqua panels, which bring together top panelists for even-handed dialogue about knotty issue. While the pandemic shut down the in-person seminars, it opened other opportunities, which Gilman was able to pivot toward. Now weekly, the Agora seminars take place every weekly, and bring in people around the country and beyond. The bracing range of topics include Thucydides, Marcel Proust, Dostoyevsky, as well as founding documents like the Federalist Papers and the Lincoln-Douglas Debates. The talks also include Eastern classics like the Bhagavad Gita. The Ojai Chautauqua began in 2014 as an offshoot of the Libbey Bowl Foundation based on the intellectual tent revivals of the 1870s in western New York. Gilman called it the "seminar write large." Gilman has hosted 17 of these public events since then, along with Dan Schnur of USC fame as the moderator, with topics such as "Media in Politics" and "GMOs." Gilman has lived in Ojai for most of his life and has deep roots in the community. We talked about a lot of topics, as you might expect from two people who love Ojai and have known each other for more than a decade. We did not talk about the conquests of Genghis Khan, brook trout fishing in the Adirondacks or Joe DiMaggio. You can learn more about the Agora Foundation and Ojai Chautauqua at www.agorafoundation.com.

The Lincoln-Douglas debates — the historic series of seven debates which pitted Abraham Lincoln against Stephen Douglas as they vied for an Illinois Senate seat — began on August 21, 1858. In honor of that anniversary, this episode explores the clash of constitutional visions that characterized the debates between Lincoln and Douglas. Each man argued that he was the heir to the Founders’ legacy as enshrined by the Constitution, as they battled over slavery, popular sovereignty, the nature of rights, and the future of the union. Historians Sidney Blumenthal and Lucas Morel trace the constitutional visions and political rivalries of Lincoln and Douglas from the Kansas Nebraska Act to the Dred Scott decision, through the Civil War and the passage of the Constitution’s Reconstruction amendments. Jeffrey Rosen hosts. Questions or comments about the podcast? Email us at podcast@constitutioncenter.org.

“Any man who took Lincoln for a simple-minded man would wind up with his back in a ditch.” This is the story of America on the eve of the Civil War. Kentucky born farmboy Abraham Lincoln has an interest early life. Between losing his mom as a child, suffering from chronic depression, and receiving little formal education, you might not think he’d become one of the youngest state legislators in Illinois, a successful lawyer and a US Congressman. But that’s Lincoln. He’s a man who beats the odds, and he’s hoping to continue that streak as he challenges Stephen Douglas for his US Senate seat. Can he take down the “Little Giant?” It’s a political throw down that produces one of the most famous debates in US history as the two go head-to-head in over 20 hours of back-and-forth over the future of slavery. Speaking of slavery--John Brown’s looking to start a slave rebellion across the state of Virginia and not afraid to take over a US armory to do it! It’s a full on battle and the body count’s adding up fast … especially if we include the executions.
July 15, 2019 - Lincoln Douglas Debates
In this episode, we see how Abraham Lincoln lifted his 1858 debates with Stephen Douglas to a new level by pursuing the moral argument against slavery and against its expansion.
In this episode, I look at the third and fourth of the great Lincoln-Douglas debates. It seems to me that Lincoln was on the defensive in these two debates. He has yet to lift the subject of the debate to issue of the morality of slavery.
This podcast is the first of three episodes exploring the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debates. In addition to reading them I watched the reenactments aired by C-SPAN in the 1990s. I recommend them.

What does Douglas mean by "diversity" and how does he use it to attack Lincoln's alleged doctrine of "uniformity"? Why does Douglas think Lincoln is wrong to criticize the Dred Scott opinion? How does Lincoln answer Douglas's charges? What does Lincoln mean by the "moral lights" of the community? In the second debate, how does Lincoln force Douglas into a quandary regarding popular sovereignty and support for the Dred Scott opinion? (See Douglas's argument about "unfriendly legislation.") In the seventh debate, what is Lincoln's understanding of the Founders' views regarding slavery? How does Lincoln show that the rhetoric of Douglas makes him a kind of abolitionist in practice?
