What happens when life takes an unexpected turn and you're forced to redefine everything? Chris Waddell was a competitive skier in college when a devastating accident left him paralyzed from the waist down. Less than a year later, he was back on the mountain—this time as a monoskier—beginning a journey that would make him the most decorated male mono-skier in U.S. history. But Chris's story isn't just about athletic triumph; it's about the reinvention that happens when you decide to show up fully for your own life. In this episode, Chris shares how recovery was just the first step in his healing journey. That accident and his resilience took him places he never imagined: from the Paralympics podium to being a published author and from the ski slopes to a soap opera set. He reminds us that our best self isn't a fixed point—it is who we become in response to life's hardest moments. This conversation is about grit, possibility, and the magic of saying yes to the unexpected. Bio Chris Waddell's 12 Paralympic skiing medals are more than any man in US history. He's a Hall of Famer, a World Champion in wheelchair track, and the first “nearly unassisted” paraplegic to summit 19,340-foot Mt Kilimanjaro. His ski popped off competing in college, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. 362 days later, Chris monoskied and soon became the fastest in the world. The Dalai Lama honored him as an “Unsung Hero of Compassion,” Skiing Magazine dubbed him one of 25 Greatest Skiers in North America and People Magazine named him one of “The 50 Most Beautiful People.” https://chriswaddellinc.com/

When I was first introduced to Chris Waddell for this podcast, I was super excited. His bio is absolutely inspiring. He was Dalai Lama's Unsung Hero for Compassion. He's won 13 Paralympic medals. He's in the Paralympic Hall of Fame. He's in the US Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame. NPR credited him with one of the best graduation speeches ever for his keynote at Middlebury College in 2011. He has won more medals than any male monoskier in Paralympic history. He is somebody who has been recognized for being one of the 50 most beautiful people by People Magazine, which we talk about in today's conversation. The accolades are endless, they're inspiring, they're impressive, they're almost outer worldly. In our conversation, we talk about the downside that comes with people who view Chris as a hero. I watched a documentary that he was featured in, and the documentary was beautiful, it was all about his ascent to Mount Kilimanjaro as an unassisted paraplegic. That documentary was a fascinating watch and it is the focal point of a lot of our conversation today, as Chris challenges the notion that others sometimes think that he's outer worldly and that he's some sort of hero because of some of the challenges he's faced as far as with his ability to walk. That is what makes this conversation so real, so unique, so vulnerable: even though Chris is paralyzed and doing things that most able-bodied people would think is beyond the realm of possibility for them, Chris is a human and you're going to love him in today's conversation because he's open, honest, and vulnerable. Chris had a number of amazing insights during our conversation. Some of them include: “If you don't tell the story, it didn't happen” (6:25). “In climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, I wanted to confirm I was a superhero” (7:50). “I wanted to free myself of this burden of being the superhero” (8:00). “If you're a human being, you're part of the team” (8:30). “The victim thing is the thing that I want to avoid at all costs” (12:20). “If I continued to be a victim of circumstance, then my life ended at 20 years old effectively” (12:40). “We often see our greatest strength in crisis” (16:25). “The vulnerability is where we ultimately connect as human beings” (18:05). “The only way that we really connect with other people is through being honest” (18:50). “I wanted to stretch people's imaginations and do things that were never possible” (24:25). “I want to create and be able to convey whatever is in me” (26:05). “I find heroes everywhere I go” (28:00). “We're always capable of more than we think we're capable of” (28:25). “Simplicity is the ultimate goal, but it takes a lot of work to actually get to the point where we achieve simplicity” (32:35). “Ease can be the real root of our genius, too” (33:40). “[Busyness] draws us away from efficiency” (38:25). “If we're occupied, then we have no time for thought” (38:50). “I don't get there on my own” (45:55). “If we're not aware of what other people are doing, we're doing ourselves a huge disservice” (46:10). “The key to communication… is ultimately about being direct” (47:05). “The biggest struggle for me is conflict” (51:15). “There's the way I see myself, the way that people see me, and then there's the way I think that people see me” (54:10). “You don't want to be seen for that surface level stuff” (57:45). “The struggle is where we connect as human beings” (58:00). “If we're perfecting our craft, we're never growing old” (58:20). “It's the getting better part that's the most addictive part of being a human being” (58:55). “Fear is my greatest motivator” (1:01:50). John was a professional rugby player and aspiring triathlete during the off-season when an eight-ton truck hit him as he trained on his bike. Medical experts set his chances at “pine or mahogany” and told the family not to expect him to make it through the day. John made it through that day. When he emerged from the coma, he asked about his bike, which had lost significance since he'd now use a wheelchair. Months of treatment and therapy eventually brought him to rebuilding his former self. As he lifted weights with his mate, his father asked, “How far can you go?” Far went well beyond pine box or mahogany. In over twelve hours of swimming, cycling, and wheelchair racing, John became the first paraplegic to meet all the cut-off times as an official finisher of the Kona Ironman. Then he swam the English Channel, the world's busiest shipping lane, in twelve hours and fifty-five minutes. Olympic Games, Paralympic Games, a Paralympic Medal, and learning to walk again well enough to finish the original triathlon for which he was training when the truck met his bike. And there's another challenge on the horizon.

It's a Canadian media power play unlike any other: Alphabet and Meta are fighting back against the Canadian government's Bill C-18. And caught in the middle is the news media.  The Online News Act – was supposed to make tech giants pay for posting news stories to their platforms.  Now Google and Meta say they aren't going to pay. Instead — they'll remove Canadian news from their sites and apps. It's a move that will make it more difficult for Canadians to access news. And may very well plummet news companies further into the red. This all comes as news companies are cutting back, looking at mergers, trying to get out of obligations of providing local news to Canadians. Chris Waddell joins Tamara Khandaker to sort through this. He's a former professor at  the School of Journalism and Communication at Carleton University. He's also the publisher at J-Source, a website dedicated to the Canadian media industry. For transcripts of this series, please visit: https://www.cbc.ca/radio/frontburner/transcripts

Our guest usually finds himself speaking in front of large audiences motivating them through topics like the power of change or embracing the struggle, but today… we get him all to ourselves. Chris Waddell is a Hall of Fame Paralympic skier and wheelchair track athlete. A college skiing accident paralyzed him waist down. Yet he went to the highest levels of competition in the Paralympics winning medal after medal for a decade. The adventure continued with his unassisted ascent of the highest mountain in Africa, Kilimanjaro at over 19,000 (the first paraplegic to do so). Authoring a few books came next, founding a non-profit, delivering commencement speeches, and the list goes on… 'm glad you're joining us for this conversation between host Erik Weihemayer and guest Chris Waddell.

Back in ninth grade, I knew that Jeremiah was a performer when he was break dancing for the other team before our soccer games during a school trip to what was then the USSR, but at the time, he was really known as the best athlete in school. September 11th and sense of responsibility for our freedom sent him to the Army, Special Forces and three tours in Iraq. Mental health remains a huge issue for our returning Veterans. Even though a difficult divorce met him at home, volunteering and acting have served as his therapy. He's consumed, gaining credits, learning everything he can and is studying at the Stella Adler Studio in Los Angeles. Watch for him

This week's conversation is with Chris Waddell, a Paralympian who is widely known as the most decorated mono skier in U.S. history. Chris began ski racing at the age of six, He skied in College where an accident during a freshman year training session left him paralyzed from the waist down. What happens for most of us, when we go through some life-altering – is that it reveals our internal operating system (one's world-view, personal philosophy, psychological skills - the external event illuminates our internal world. While Chris couldn't use his body the same way – it revealed who he is. We are so much more than our physical body.Within a year, Chris was back on the mountain as a mono skier and soon became the fastest in the world – he has gone on to compete in seven Paralympic games, earning 13 medals in alpine skiing and track & field, cementing his place as one of Team USA's most successful two-sport athletes, and a Paralympic Hall of Famer. As if that wasn't enough, in 2009 Chris also became the first “nearly unassisted” paraplegic to summit the 19,340-foot Mt Kilimanjaro.Chris is epic for some many reasons – embodiment of resilience, purpose, passion, having command of his mind – his commitment to work from the inside-out…and more subtly, after the conversation there was nowhere for me to turn, other than to re-examine how I'm living my life – am I really pouring into being the person I believe I'm capable of being. Today's guest is inspiring the heck out of people to do something bigger and greater than themselves! In this episode, Erick Cabral speaks with Chris Waddell, a 13-time Paralympic medalist and World Champion in Winter and Summer Sports. Honored by The Dalai Lama in 2005 as the Unsung Hero of Compassion, Chris is the first nearly unassisted paraplegic to summit Mount Kilimanjaro, as documented in the 1 Revolution documentary that won a ton of film festival awards. Some of Chris' career highlights include being the first ambassador for the International Paralympic Committee, founder of One Revolution Foundation, Paralympic Hall of Famer, and People Magazine's “50 Most Beautiful People.” Chris has won the most medals of any male monoskier in Paralympic history. Get ready to be inspired by this great legend! Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Chris's introduction to the sports world and his love for skiing Lessons from skiing and reclaiming his passion for the sport Replicating your strategy in other areas of your life How he managed to rise above his accident The Mount Kilimanjaro experience Giving people the opportunity to stare Climbing your mountain and celebrating your difficulties About One Revolution Episode Highlights: [18:39] The Power of Strategy Being able to create your strategy and replicate it, plays an active role in your path to success. Once you've figured out where you want to go, you can then apply that strategy in whatever area of your life, whether in school, your business, your family, and your relationships. [25:23] Honoring Your Unsung Heroes In the sports world, the definition of a hero is a person who succeeds against the odds. People who have had to face the greatest adversity are the ones with the greatest stories to tell. They're the unsung heroes that you want to learn from – and they come from different areas of your life. They can be your parents, your mentors, your friends, or even that person who waits at your table who has been working two jobs to make ends meet. Unfortunately, sometimes, we tend to lose sight of this in our everyday lives. [09:36] Climbing Your Mountain Climbing a mountain is representative of our struggles as human beings. Oftentimes, too, we think once we get to the top of the mountain, then it's finished. In that case, you will no longer be growing and changing. But the top of every mountain is just the bottom of the next mountain. It's difficult and your mountain may look different each day. But you have to celebrate the difficulty because the greatest joy is in learning something new and growing in a way you had never imagined. We are live from the GoBundance event with Chris Waddell, 12-time paralympic medal winner and the most decorated mono skier in history. He entered the US Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame in 2009 and the Paralympics Hall of Fame in 2010. A skiing accident left him paralyzed from the waist down, which he describes as the most traumatic and most powerful experience to happen in his life. By aiming to prove himself, not as a disabled person, but simply as a person, Chris was able to achieve some truly incredible things, including a climb to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. His nonprofit, One Revolution, sets out to redefine the way we look at disability.   The Biggest Helping: Today's Most Important Takeaway “Our lives are going to take twists and turns. We will have a plan and most likely that plan doesn't work out the way that we thought it would. Sometimes, not getting what you want can be the greatest gift of all. If I can remove the emotional part of that… Oh, I failed in my plan – to recognize that… Hey, this might be an opportunity I had not had my eyes open to. That, to me, is my greatest helping.”   --   Thank you for joining us on The Daily Helping with Dr. Shuster. Chris was a ski racer at Middlebury College when he fell in a ski accident, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. Chris was back skiing within a year, and went on to become one of the most decorated mono-skiers of all time. When Chris retired as a professional athlete, he summited Mt. Kilimanjaro on a hand cycle, in an effort to turn perception of disability upside down. He is the first paraplegic to summit Mt Kilimanjaro, nearly unassisted, on a hand cycle. Chris' journey lives on through the documentary 1Revolution. Chris' genuine, personal and considerate delivery aims to connect and instruct, something he sought even as a competitor. As he became the fastest monoskier in the world, he and his female counterpart started a monoski instructional camp to help others unlock their potential without enduring the pain and frustration that they had. Members of those camps went on to win National, World Championship and Paralympic medals. When he attempted to become the first unassisted paraplegic to summit Mt Kilimanjaro, he stood on the shoulders of his heroes to turn the impossible into reality and give others the courage to confront their fears to live and perform most fully. The climb wasn't without incident. His team had to carry him up a boulder field, but that “failure” allowed him to separate from the obligation to be a superhero—to be honest, vulnerable and to find his real power. In 2015, he published his first book Things I Want to Remember Not to Forget, inspired by his Middlebury College Commencement Address. The following year, he taught himself to draw and wrote and illustrated his first children's book, Is It Lonely to be a Four-Leaf Clover? He has appeared on Dateline, Oprah, and 20/20 as well as providing color commentary for the Paralympics on NBC and being one of People Magazine's “50 Most Beautiful People.” Chris just did a second run of his "Things I Want to Remember Not to Forget" book and just last month, he returned to NBC's coverage of the Paralympics, handling Opening, Closing and Skiing analysis as well as some host responsibilities. A popular keynote speaker, Chris helps audiences become champions of their businesses, their worlds and themselves. He has spoken to nearly every industry and kind of audience—from Fortune 500 Companies to non-profits, from sales groups to venture capitalists and engineers. He inspires audiences to consider how seemingly ordinary people can achieve the impossible.
