Part One: Newfoundland Adopts Right-Hand Drive On January 2, 1947, Newfoundland made a switch that had everyone—drivers, pedestrians, and even horses—feeling a bit jittery. Just past midnight, the colony's roads transformed as Newfoundlanders were suddenly required to drive on the right side of the road, leaving behind decades of left-side driving. The change symbolized a shift away from British ties and toward a North American alignment. In retrospect, it was the harbinger of a bigger changes to come. Read more: The Day Newfoundland Started Driving on the Right Part Two: Don't Tell the Newfoundlanders Greg Malone is a Newfoundland legend. As a member of the Wonderful Grand Band and CODCO, Malone became a fixture in living rooms not only across Newfoundland and Labrador, but across the country. He served-up wickedly funny satire and his celebrity impersonations (ranging from Queen Elizabeth II to Jean Chrétien to Barbara Frum) remain legendary. Malone's talents go well beyond television; he's appeared in films (including The Adventure of Faustus Bidgood, HeyDay! Rare Birds,) directed a docudrama on suffragists in Newfoundland and championed important political causes. Malone has written two books — a memoir titled You Better Watch Out and piece of historical non-fiction titled Don't Tell the Newfoundlanders. Don't Tell the Newfoundlanders shares the untold story of Newfoundland and Labrador's entry into Confederation with Canada. Based on official documents and supported with personal interviews, Malone paints a dramatic scene of per-confederation Newfoundland filled with intriguing characters vying for control of the islands resources. Malone's fresh perspective casts new light on an often misunderstood chapter of Newfoundland and Labrador's history. The book forms the basis of a new six-part docu-series set to premiere on Bell's FibeTV. On this episode of the podcast Malone discusses his work and the journey from CODCO to Don't Tell The Newfoundlanders Watch CODCO's Pleasant Priests in Conversation. Part Three: Monstrous Things As per usual, the episode ends with Monstrous Things — a short segment that recounts sea monster sightings that were reported in the mainstream media. This edition takes us off Cape Freels where, in 1953 an enormous sea monster was seen by fisherman near Cabot Islands. Platforms You can listen to the episode here or on your favourite platform. In the backroom, pulling the strings for Martin were political strategists, David Herle and Scott Reid.Herle and Reid join us to talk about how they did it, what's changed about party politics since then and why taking Trudeau down might be much more difficult. For transcripts of Front Burner, please visit: https://www.cbc.ca/radio/frontburner/transcripts

On this episode of The Alex Pierson Podcast, our host Alex Pierson first is joined by the Ottawa Bureau Chief for the Globe & Mail, Robert Fife. Fife has published a new piece which highlights that former Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan received "political donations" for directing Canadian troops to specifically airlift a group of Afghan Sikhs out of Kabul when the Taliban retook the country. Robert and Alex talk about what Minister Sajjan has to say in his defence, and why this excuse left hundreds of Afghan interpreters stranded in what quickly became hostile territory. Next, Alex and Warren Kinsella, the President of The Daisy Group and former strategist for Jean Chrétien dive into what seems to be dissent growing within the Liberal ranks. Prime Minister Trudeau has chosen to avoid the Calgary Stampede and subsequently, a caucus meeting in Alberta. But could this be to avoid these MPs calling for his removal? Alex and Warren also turn their attention south of the border and discuss what the Democratic party will do if President Biden either chooses to run...or step aside. Finally, the US Department of Justice offered Boeing a plea bargain for violating previous agreements to improve its manufacturing process and safety, which resulted in at least 2 separate plane crashes killing a total of 346 people. Alex speaks with the attorney representing the victims' family members, Robert Cillford, who is a Sr. Partner at Clifford Law Offices. Robert tells Alex why he believes the DOJ offered this deal out of cowardice, and how this will only further hurt the families of the victims instead of help at all. There's a presidential election this year in the U.S., maybe you've heard about it, and like so much of American culture it threatens to block out the sun here, not to mention a lot of serious political issues we're dealing with here in Canada. Why are we so obsessed with American politics and is it to the detriment of our own political enlightenment in this country? We could intellectualize this by saying that what goes on in America is a sneak preview of what's coming in Canada. The neo-liberal centrism of Bill Clinton presaged the arrival of Jean Chrétien and Paul Martin, the neo-conservative George W. Bush was followed by his Canadian equivalent in Stephen Harper, and many people are seeing a comparison between Donald Trump and Pierre Poilievre with the performative outrage over woke and a lean towards economic populism. We also have a cross border alt-right feedback loop. Yes, you can say that something like the Freedom Convoy was fed by Trumpism and other appendages of the MAGA machine, but Canada has given them Gavin McGinnis, Lauren Southern, Jordan Peterson, and patient zero for the "Satanic Panic", Michelle Smith, was a resident of Victoria, B.C. So should we ignore American politics, or ignore them at our peril? Our guest this week spends part of his year in Florida, and he might have an answer! Oliver Rockside, a Guelph Politico booster and friend, podcaster, and former colleague from the Gang of Four show on CFRU, joins us this week to talk about the state of play living in a gerrymandered area of Florida, what it's like today talking to Americans, and whether or not he's seeing some warning signs here in Canada that were following in their example. Also, are we too focused on American politics here in Canada, and does it have a negative impact on understanding our own issues in this county? So let us consider American politics on this week's edition of the Guelph Politicast! You can check out the Oliver Rockside podcast universe by listening to his music show In Your Ear Holes, the Law & Order podcast The 27th Precinct, and the now complete Star Trek pod 78 Episodes 30 Good Ones. Kheiriddin and guests talk about the third pothole blitz conducted by the city of Toronto. Gray revealed the city will soon add "Patch Masters" to their equipment inventory. The patch is described online to be an all-weather material that can be used to fill potholes in wet or dry conditions. ISRAEL VS HAMAS PROTESTS AROUND THE WORLD CAUSE A RISE OF ANTI-SEMETIC SENTIMENT  Finally, Tasha Kheiriddin was joined by Warren Kinsella, former special assistant to Jean Chrétien and CEO of the Daisy Group. Pro-Palestinian protests blocked downtown Ottawa roads this weekend and some of the chants openly glorified Hamas' terror attacks of October 7. While the Prime Minister condemned these actions on X, many Canadians are saying our politicians need to do more to tackle the rising tide of hate as the Israel-Hamas war enters its seventh month. Kheiriddin also talks about the similar situation at Columbia University in the U.S. where classes were held virtually due to a surge in anti-Semitic statements on campus grounds.

Liberals were praising Jean Chrétien on his 90th birthday recently. Then, almost immediately afterward, they were distancing themselves from Canada's 20th prime minister after news he had once tried watering down an Indigenous rights declaration. That's the peculiar, contradictory legacy of “the little guy from Shawnigan” that former Liberal party president Stephen LeDrew and National Post columnist Chris Selley appraise this week with host Brian Lilley. They discuss the reverence for Chrétien in the Liberal party and certain media, despite his cringey opinions and debatable morality. They also look at how much weirder the Liberals have become since the man stepped down. (Recorded January 18, 2023) Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Former Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chrétien recently celebrated his 90th birthday. Despite their political differences, another former Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, sent him a birthday greeting, suggesting that former opponents can bury the hatchet over time. This display of camaraderie and respect between former leaders is a rarity in today's political climate. In contrast, current political leaders, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre, do not seem to have this same level of respect for one another. In speaking with the media recently, Chrétien criticized Poilievre's characterization of Canada as "broken”, arguing that attacking institutions undermines the unity of the country. We discuss the state of the country with Dr. Lori Turnbull, Chair & Professor of Public & International Affairs at Dalhousie University in Episode 37 of The Bill Kelly Podcast.#pierrepoilievre  #conservative #justintrudeau #liberal #canada #canadalife #billkelly #thebillkellypodcast Listen to this podcast everywhere:https://kite.link/the-bill-kelly-podcastWatch the interview by subscribing to our YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@TheBillKellyPodcastSubscribe to my Substack for free news updates straight to your inbox and exclusive paid contentbillkelly.substack.comConnect with me on socials: @ThisIsBillKellyhttps://twitter.com/ThisIsBillKellyhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/thisisbillkelly/https://www.instagram.com/thisisbillkelly/ Get full access to Bill Kelly's Substack at billkelly.substack.com/subscribe

Bruno Nsaka

Guests: Scott Reid, advisor to former prime minister Paul Martin and political analyst with CTV, speaks with guest host Edward Keenan Exactly 21 years ago, Scott Reid's boss, then Finance Minister Paul Martin, delivered a speech on the need to give cities a new source of revenue. It was regarded as the new deal for cities, and a speech Reid recalls led to Martin's departure from Jean Chrétien's cabinet. Now all these years later, as Reid and guest host Edward Keenan agree, Toronto needs to demand a new deal that acknowledges Toronto is different than any other city in Canada. Reid, a “lifelong political hack,” talks through how mayoral candidates should approach it as a campaign issue to win a mandate and how it might work out in practice to create leverage if anyone won the election on that message. It's been 10 years since Justin Trudeau became leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. That not only makes him one of today's longest-serving party leaders in the country, it also puts him on a short list of historic Liberal leaders: only Lester Pearson, Jean Chrétien, Pierre Trudeau, Mackenzie King and Wilfrid Laurier have held the job longer than Justin Trudeau has.He says he will lead the Liberals into the next election, but a decade is already more than enough time to leave a mark. To discuss Trudeau's legacy to date, I'm joined this week by the CBC's Aaron Wherry, who wrote a book on the first years of Trudeau's time in office, and Susan Delacourt of the Toronto Star.As always, in addition to listening to the episode in your inbox, at TheWrit.ca or on podcast apps like Apple Podcasts, you can also watch this episode on YouTube. He defended his decisions, defended the philosophy behind the schools, and even defended his 1969 proposition to abolish Indian Affairs and eliminate Indian status altogether. He rightly stated that we can't change history, and that we shouldn't apologize for every bad thing that happened in the past. Chrétien defended a position that many Canadians agree with, he held his ground when the woke anti-Canada crowd came after him.
