BBQ Judging, Scythe Harvesting, and Christian MarriageBarbecue Competition Judging: Adam shares his first experience as a barbecue competition judge at a local Catholic church and school fundraiser in Tulsa, where he was joined by his son Jude (assistant judge) and two priests.Judged four categories: chicken, pulled pork, ribs, and brisket (Adam insists brisket is the primary measure; David (wrongly) argues for ribs).12 pit masters competed; judged on appearance, taste, tenderness, texture, uniqueness, and overall (max score 25).Advice from Joe Martin's son: Take one bite per entry to avoid overeating (48 bites total across 40 minutes).Adam judged strictly (e.g., scores as low as 14, zero for appearance), while priests gave higher scores (23–24), highlighting differing standards.Event fostered camaraderie among pit masters (12 hours together) and service to attendees, teaching kids sacrifice, friendship, and craft articulation.Shout-out to Brian Schooley for organizing; Adam and David plan to enter as The Catholic Man Show next year, with Jim in a dunk tank.Main DiscussionWheat Harvest with a ScytheDavid's Experience: David harvested two 45x45-foot wheat plots using a scythe, finding it soothing, peaceful, and in tune with nature despite being exhausting.Quotes Wendell Berry: “The means we use to do our work almost certainly affects the way we look at the world” (via an X account, @minahan8).Compared to last year's sickle (felt “commie”), the scythe was efficient for small-scale farming; not practical for large-scale but satisfying.Kids raked straw (post-harvest, nutritionless due to seeding) for pig bedding or garden mulch; straw vs. hay explained (hay retains nutrition).Adam plans to borrow David's scythe for his own wheat harvest, nervous about back strain.Wendell Berry Reflection: Hosts revisit Berry's essays, appreciating his beautiful, idealistic conclusions but finding his reasoning insufficient (e.g., abandoning tractors would starve people).Compare Berry's idealism to J.R.R. Tolkien and Guardini's Letters at Lake Como; both depict lovely worlds but lack practical solutions for modern challenges.Christian Marriage and Pope Leo XIIIIntroduction to Pope Leo XIII: Adam introduces Pope Leo XIII (1810–1903), a prophetic figure who addressed modernity's challenges (secularism, communism, liberalism) in the late 19th century.Known for Rerum Novarum (1891, Catholic social teaching), reviving Thomism in seminaries (to counter Nietzsche, Hegel, and communism), and engaging modern society. His encyclical Arcanum Divinae Sapientiae (1880) emphasizes Christian marriage as a divine, not secular, institution, foundational to society.Critiqued rise of divorce, moral relativism, and civil interference undermining marriage's sanctity; argued church, not state, holds primary authority over marriage.Marriage as Trinitarian Image: Marriage mirrors the Trinity's relational society, where spousal love is so real it produces a third (child), reflecting Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.Secular view (Enlightenment-era and today) reduces marriage to a consensual contract, ignoring its sacramental, stable, and permanent nature.State has a role in regulating marriage per natural law, but church's supernatural authority supersedes.Ephesians 5 and Mutual SubmissionScriptural Basis: Leo XIII references Ephesians 5 (footnoted), where St. Paul instructs mutual submission out of reverence for Christ, with specific roles: wives submit to husbands, husbands love wives as Christ loved the church.Secular society fixates on “wives submit,” ignoring mutual submission and...

pWotD Episode 2929: Pope Leo XIII Welcome to Popular Wiki of the Day, spotlighting Wikipedia's most visited pages, giving you a peek into what the world is curious about today. With 363,646 views on Friday, 9 May 2025 our article of the day is Pope Leo XIII.Pope Leo XIII (Italian: Leone XIII; born Gioacchino Vincenzo Raffaele Luigi Pecci; 2 March 1810 – 20 July 1903) was head of the Catholic Church from 20 February 1878 until his death in July 1903. He had the fourth-longest reign of any pope, behind those of Peter the Apostle, Pius IX (his immediate predecessor), and John Paul II.He is well known for his intellectualism and his attempts to define the position of the Catholic Church with regard to modern thinking. In his 1891 encyclical Rerum novarum, Pope Leo outlined the rights of workers to a fair wage, safe working conditions, and the formation of trade unions, while affirming the rights to property and free enterprise, opposing both socialism and laissez-faire capitalism. With that encyclical, he became popularly called the "Social Pope" and the "Pope of the Workers", also having created the foundations for modern thinking in the social doctrines of the Catholic Church, influencing his successors. He influenced the Mariology of the Catholic Church and promoted both the rosary and the scapular. Upon his election, he immediately sought to revive Thomism, the theological system of Augustine of Hippo and Thomas Aquinas, wishing to make it the official political, theological, and philosophical foundation of the Catholic Church. As a result, he sponsored the Editio Leonina in 1879.Leo XIII is remembered for his belief that pastoral activity in political sociology is also a vital mission of the church as a vehicle of social justice and maintaining the rights and dignities of the human person. He issued a record eleven papal encyclicals on the rosary, earning him the title "Rosary Pope". He also approved two new Marian scapulars. He was the first pope to have never held any control over the Papal States, which had been dissolved by 1870, since Stephen II in the 8th century. Similarly, many of his policies were oriented toward mitigating the loss of the Papal States in an attempt to overcome the loss of temporal power, but nonetheless continuing the Roman Question. After his death in 1903, he was buried in the Vatican Grottoes. In 1924, his remains were transferred to the Archbasilica of Saint John Lateran. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 09:06 UTC on Sunday, 11 May 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Pope Leo XIII on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Kendra.

In this thought-provoking episode, we welcome back Dr. Leonardo De Chirico, a leading Reformed evangelical theologian and pastor in Rome, for a consideration of the legacy and ongoing influence of Thomas Aquinas. Drawing from his recent book, Engaging with Thomas Aquinas: An Evangelical Approach (Apollos), Dr. De Chirico offers a critical yet charitable appraisal of Aquinas's theological architecture and enduring impact on Roman Catholicism. Together, Camden and Leonardo explore key themes such as the Catholic Church's dual nature—Roman and Catholic—the evolving role of Thomism across church history, and the tensions within Roman Catholic thought on Vatican II and modernity. Listeners will also hear how Protestants have historically interacted with Aquinas and why an eclectic, biblically grounded engagement remains vital today. This episode offers not only theological clarity but pastoral wisdom for evangelicals navigating the complexities of tradition, authority, and theological retrieval in a post-Reformation world. Today's debate didn't go very far due to the typical Thomist penchant for avoiding answering objections by simply repeating the position. When we agreed on what Thomism teaches, I asked specific questions which resulted in further stating of the Thomist position. When I said the conversation was "bs" the opponent whined it was a personal insult (it wasn't) and tried to play victim, so it was going nowhere. Here we will open up the chat for any Thomists to finish the discussion for Astro.

Catholic University of America Press recently launched a major new series: the English Critical Edition of the Works of Karol Wojtyła/John Paul II. The first volume of the series was a new translation of Wojtyła's 1969 book Person and Act, along with related essays. In Person and Act Wojtyła set forth the foundation of his blend of phenomenology, Thomism and personalism, a foundation underlying much of his other philosophical and theological writing. The first English translation is generally considered to be quite inaccurate, and, crucially, removed the Latin terms by which Wojtyła refers to the Thomistic and scholastic tradition, leading to a false impression that Wojtyła was much more of a pure phenomenologist and less of a Thomist than he really was. Thus the new translation by Gregorz Ignatik is a significant moment for the reception of Wojtyła/John Paul II's thought in the Anglosphere. In this episode, Timothy Flanders joins Thomas Mirus to discuss Person and Act as they attempt to boil down some of the key points of this rather challenging book, to set Wojtyła's philosophy in its intellectual, cultural, and religious context, and showing why his insights about human consciousness, the experience of morality, and the person are important for us as well. Points discussed include: How Wojtyła's use of phenomenology and personalism relates to the traditional Aristo-Thomistic anthropology The importance of phenomenological methods for the "healing of experience" and giving an objective account of the subjective Correcting modern errors about consciousness The concept of the person in relation to the traditional concept of human nature The need to integrate cognition with experience and the danger of the "emotionalization of consciousness" The centrality of morality to personhood Links The Meaning of Catholic https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCaMoKEEA-KKDNgx3icjA36Q Person and Act and Related Essays https://www.cuapress.org/9780813233666/person-and-act-and-related-essays/ Recommended secondary sources: Accessible: Crosby, The Personalism of John Paul II https://www.amazon.com/Personalism-John-Paul-II/dp/1939773148 Jablonska, A Pope for All Seasons https://www.amazon.com/Pope-All-Seasons-Testimonies-Inspired/dp/1621388840 Less accessible: Buttiglione, Karol Wojtyla: The Thought of the Man Who Became Pope John Paul II https://www.amazon.com/Karol-Wojtyla-Thoughtof-Became-Thought-ebook/dp/B002BWPTOW Weigel, Witness to Hope: The Biography of Pope John Paul II https://www.amazon.com/Witness-Hope-Biography-Pope-John/dp/0062996010/ DONATE to make this show possible! http://catholicculture.org/donate/audio Go to Catholic Culture's website for tons of written content, including news, articles, liturgical year info, and a vast library of documents: https://www.catholicculture.org

Do we need deep scientific knowledge in order to make arguments for the existence of God? Or can we demonstrate a general, objective, rational case for God's existence using common observations found in our everyday life? Philosopher and theologian Thomas Aquinas introduced the world to his "Five Ways" for the existence of God back in the 13th century, and they are still being discussed and debated today. There are some similarities between Aquinas' Five Ways and many other common arguments for the existence of God (Kalam cosmological, moral, teleological, etc.) but there are also some important distinctions to keep in mind. In this midweek podcast episode, Frank sits down with Dr. David Haines, assistant professor of theology and philosophy at Bethlehem College and Seminary, to discuss two of the five arguments Aquinas used to prove the existence of God. David is active in research related to ancient and medieval philosophy, early Reformed theology, C.S. Lewis, Thomism, natural law, and natural theology. He has given conference presentations and published a number of articles and books in these areas, including Natural Theology and Natural Law. As Frank and David introduce the audience to two of these Five Ways of Aquinas, you will see that their (relative) simplicity can be deceiving, and their nuances will continue to spark discussion for many more centuries to come! Philosopher Stefan Molyneux takes philosophical questions from listeners on Locals!https://freedomain.locals.comHi Stef, maybe i got it wrong, but in your video "The Story of Your Enslavement" you said in the end "To see the farm is to leave it". What do you mean by it? can you elaborate? Thank youHi Stef, how can teachers best support students from (at best) extremely strict families who present with crippling anxiety? Thank you for all you doHey Stefan, loving the show. I'm going to try tip more often, you deserve it! Especially more than than restaurant staff (their philosophy is tasteless) ;PTomorrow will be my first time as an hiring manager. The role is for a software engineer at my company. Any tips or advice?Stef do you have any tips to have successful sales calls with potential clients? You may have answered this last show, but do you think people can actually consent to arranged marriages? It just feels like a form of human trafficking to me.So my wife is in school to teach and has many teacher friends. When I speak to her or her friends she calls me non supportive and condescending. I bring up charity systems and lower pay because summers and winter off etc... She states I'm incentive and turns off my reasoning. Thoughts? What advice would you give a person who's awakened to the horror of their many years of R-selected and degenerate behavior and is now so filled with shame that they can't figure out how to move past it or ever hope to assert their own needs in the world? How can the sort of person you'd certainly advise others to steer clear of based on their past hope to change their life and be able to form healthy relationships?Stef, why is judging people considered a bad thing, people also say to not judge a book by its cover for example. But aren't judgements useful to quickly filter through people and waste less time, or am I missing something here?Stef how long do you think the U.S economy can survive without a collapse? 5 years? Peter Schiff thinks 2023 will be a bad year for the U.S economy.Stef, I've read that inflating a currency incentivizes people to consume conspicuously and disincentivizes saving - could this (over-consumption due to inflation) be what leftists are critiquing when they squeal about consumerism, in the same way that when they criticize capitalism they are actually criticizing the ill effects of crony capitalism/fascism ?Stef any recent experience with the great slowdown? I went to a restaurant, food was late, was wrong and everyone seemed aloof, I notice this carelessness in other businesses as well.Hi Stef! You have ignited the flame of fatherhood within me and 2 days ago our 2nd child was born in good health. I am 46, do you have any ideas or thoughts about parenthood at a higher age? Many thanksAny thoughts on the death of Pope Benedict XVI? I plan to read his books on philosophy and theology. He seemed to hold on to Thomism like Christopher Dawson but allowed the progressives to continue the infiltration of the churchWhat was the worst country you visited? Australia?Tips for male in late 20's who didn't date much in Adulthood but wants to startIs Kanye Right? What do you mean by the church needing the feminine and masculine? Considering their persecution, early Christians had little room for heresy and were not hippies as the communist infiltrators would like us to thinkSometimes people tell me I'm thinking too much, can you ever think too much ?I want to give my mom a second chance but want to be straightforward with her and refuse to lie or avoid bad habits and behavior. I've had a couple conversations with her and she owns that she wasn't a good mom and seems to want to get therapy and helpHey Stef why do you think there is a lot of misinformation in the fitness industry? Is it because the ones with the most aesthetic physique are deep down very insecure and have to gate keep so that no one else can have a better physique than them?

This week in the thought of Thomas Aquinas, we examine the idea of natural law, and conclude that, as articulated by Aquinas, it is an idea that gives unwarranted scope to human reason, and effectively makes God equal with His law. In contrast, Scripture teaches that God is the source of all definition, and that human law must be positivized in an historical context.
