The phrase "synoptic gospels" is thrown around a lot in Biblical scholarship, but what does it mean, and why are they important? Are they as similar as people seem to think, and what do non-academics get wrong about them? Today, Megan is joined by Dr. Mark Goodacre, professor of Religious Studies and expert in all things synoptic, to answer these questions and to investigate some of his favorite differences between these fascinating texts.
Owynn Palmer-Atkin, Matty Fryatt & Mark Goodacre preview a trip to Elland Road.
In this episode I discuss the story of the rich young ruler, which is found in Mark 10:17-22 and its parallels in Matthew 19:16-22 and Luke 18:18-23. I outline the problems with the dominant two-source theory of the synoptic problem in New Testament studies and advocate for the Farrer-Goulder-Goodacre Theory, which posits that Mark was written first, followed by Matthew, and that Luke used both as a source. I then explain the importance of oral tradition on the development of the Gospels and how traditions like the story of the rich young ruler must be interpreted within the larger framework of the Gospel narratives themselves and the tradition units with which they were transmitted. In all three Gospels, the exchange with the rich young ruler is preceded by stories that demonstrate the hypocrisy of the Pharisees and the need to accept Jesus with the humility of a child. Those traditions contextualize the response that Jesus has to the rich young ruler, which demonstrates that his attitude towards his wealth is idolatrous and similar to the self-righteousness of the Pharisees. We then look at how this text doesn't support socialism and how a historically grounded interpretation of this story demonstrates the dangers of wealth and the responsibility that the wealthy have towards those that are in need. At first reading, the Gospel of John feels a world apart from the other gospels. The language is different, there are new stories (see our episode on "the woman taken in adultery") and Jesus speaks about himself in bolder terms ("I am the resurrection and the life." "I am the light of the world.") That has led some scholars to argue that the author of John didn't know the synoptic gospels and was instead working from other sources, probably oral traditions about Jesus circulating in the 1st century CE.Our guest doesn't buy it. Mark Goodacre, creator of the pioneering biblical studies podcast NT Pod, argues convincingly that the author of John not only knew the other gospels, but wrote his version in direct response to them. Mark is hard at work on a book about John, but in the meantime you can check out some of his other groundbreaking work: The Case Against Q: Studies in Markan Priority and the Synoptic Problem, and The Synoptic Problem: A Way Through the Maze. In this interview I discuss with New Testament scholar the intriguing characteristics of this book that claims to present the truth of Jesus' "secret teachings" that alone can bring eternal life.
Typically scholars refer to Matthew, Mark, and Luke as the Synoptic Gospels. But what if there's a fourth? Works cited: Mark Goodacre, "Parallel Traditions or Parallel Gospels? John's Gospel as a Re-Imagining of Mark," in John's Transformation of Mark, edited by Eve-Marie Becker, Helen K. Bond, Carin H. Williams (London: T&T Clark, 2021), 77-89.

From Dec 2012. Richard Carrier is the world's foremost proponent of the "mythicist" view of Jesus - that he never actually existed as a historical person. He explained his theory that St. Paul only ever spoke of Jesus in the spiritual realm and that the Gospels are "extended parables". Mark Goodacre is NT professor at Duke University. He contended that Carrier's mythicist view is extrememly far fetched and the evidence for the historical Jesus is beyond reasonable doubt. • Subscribe to the Unbelievable? podcast: https://pod.link/267142101 • More shows, free eBook & newsletter: https://premierunbelievable.com • For live events: http://www.unbelievable.live • For online learning: https://www.premierunbelievable.com/training-and-events • Support us in the USA: http://www.premierinsight.org/unbelievableshow • Support us in the rest of the world: https://www.premierunbelievable.com/donate
In part one of a two part series, we take a look at the Quest for the historical Jesus, the attempt by New Testament scholars to analyze the ‘Jesus of History' that lies behind the ‘Christ of Faith'. We will look at the three different ‘quests' for the historical Jesus, analyze their successes and failures, and examine where gospels scholarship is today. We are doing this in an attempt to understand the proposal made by New Testament scholar James Crossley that Biblical scholars need to embark on the ‘Next Quest' for the historical Jesus, which we look at in more detail next week!Episode Outline:I. In this episode we discuss the relationship of scholarship on the Gospels and the historical Jesus with Dr. Mark Goodacre, who is Frances Hill Fox professor of Religious Studies at Duke University, the author of a number of important studies on the historical Jesus, the Gospels, particularly the Synoptic Problem, and the Gospel of Thomas, and the creator of one of the original biblioblogs, called NTBlog, as well as one of the original biblical studies podcasts, called the NTPod. Over the course of our conversation we discuss a number of aspects of Jesus films and how those relate to contemporary Gospels scholarship, including, the role of the imagination in historical reconstruction, the nature of Jesus' self-understanding, first-century crucifixion, and the composition of the Gospels from earlier sources. Some of the Jesus films that we address at length include: Pasolini's The Gospel According to St. Matthew (1964), The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965), Jesus Christ Superstar (1973), Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), Arcand's Jesus of Montreal (1989), and Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ (2004). Team members on the episode from The Two Cities: Dr. Josh Carroll, Dr. John Anthony Dunne, Brandon Hurlbert, Rev. Daniel Parham, and Dr. Chris Porter.

My guest this week is Ian Mills, a PhD candidate in New Testament studies at Duke University. His dissertation is “Rewriting the Gospel: Second Century Evangelists and the Act of Gospel Writing.” His key advisor is Mark Goodacre and Bart Ehrman is on his dissertation committee. Ian is a professing Christian who confesses the resurrection of Jesus. I ask Ian to provide intellectual cover for believers. His example is one of honesty and intellectual integrity while maintaining faith. What makes him interesting is his commitment to methodological naturalism as it applies to studying the first and second century gospel writings. He explains why even as a believer this is not threatening to his faith. Ian is the co-host of the New Testament Review Podcast. He and his co-host Laura Robinson rose to internet fame (at least in secular circles) after they did an episode giving an unflattering review of Lee Strobel's “A Case For Christ.” Ian's approach is a breath of fresh air particularly when compared to popular apologetics. What [popular apologists] do is bad for you. And it is because it is a complete inversion of what people of integrity and what good science inquiry should be. Instead of starting with questions and data and going and looking for explanations that satisfy your questions, they start with a set of conclusions and go mining the evidence looking for that. I personally learned a lot from Ian in this conversation. He is a wealth of information and expertise on the early Church and the process of gospel writing and canonization. As I say in the interview, I felt transported back to the best of Bible college. I suspect we will be hearing from Ian for years to come. It is where incidental details of a story given by two separate authors mesh together in an undersigned way. It leads to greater confidence that the authors are each speaking about the same factual event rather than a legend. Andrew and Jonathan talk first about the history of Undesigned Coincidences especially regarding the gospels, the approach dates back to the late 17thC and William Paley himself. There are dozens of these apparent coincidences that scholars and then apologists has used. Consider Genesis 6and three texts that frame the entirety of the Israel theological mindset. Explore the head covering passage of 1 Corinthians 11:2-16. Explore Martin and Goodacre’s text debate through their articles: Troy W. Martin, "Paul's Argument from Nature for the Veil in 1 Cor 11:13-15: A Testicle instead of a Head Covering," JBL 123:1 (2004); Mark Goodacre, "Does περιβολαιον Mean 'Testicle' in 1 Cor 11:15?" JBL 130:2 (2011); Troy W. Martin, "Περιβολαιον as 'Testicle' in 1 Cor 11:15: A Response to Mark Goodacre," JBL 132:2 (2013). Troy Martin’s first article explains the approach (footnote 1): “This article interprets Paul's argument from nature in 1 Cor 11:13-15 against the background of ancient physiology. The Greek and Roman medical texts provide useful information for interpreting not only Paul's letters but also other NT texts.” Martin quotes Elisabeth Schussler-Fiorenza and sets up the problem or topic in "Paul's Argument in 1 Corinthians 11:13-15". Consider that covering hair is about modesty. 1 Corinthians 11:10 states, “That is why a wife ought to have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.” This is another indication that in Paul's head is the whole incident with the Watchers in a supernatural context. When we see how the writers' view of the spiritual world intersects with the embodied world, the passages take on a sensible possibility. How do we get Nephilim after the flood? One option is that what the Watcher's did was transmitted or carried in the women, the wives of Noah's sons. Another option would be if the Flood was localized or regional. Another option is that Genesis 6:4 can be translated, “The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, whenever the sons of God came in to the daughters of man...”In Numbers 13:33 we read, “And there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.” What is happening in Numbers 13 is linked to Genesis 6.
