Mark Lundy has divided our workplace out there. Some of my colleagues think that it's really gross that the Herald, who we work with, have taken photos of Mark Lundy today after he got out of jail yesterday. Now, the photos aren't anything particularly special - he's sitting in the passenger seat of a car, all you can really see is his face, that funny little beard he's got, some sunglasses and his latte coloured hoodie. It tells you nothing and it shows you almost nothing. And I suspect the reason it shows you almost nothing is because there are very heavy suppression orders about where he lives at the moment. So anything that identifies the town outside of the car, I would imagine, cannot be published. So they're a little bit limited in what they can show you. But even though there's almost nothing to see in these photos, boy, are we clicking on this particular story. It was, when I last checked, the most read and most viewed story on the Herald - so people are interested. And shouldn't the media be reporting and taking photos of things that we're interested in? I would say yes. Now, I can understand why people are grossed out by this. I suspect a lot of that comes down to the fact that there is significant doubt amongst some people as to Lundy's guilt - just as there was doubt with David Bain, just as there was doubt with Scott Watson. And so the feeling is, if you think he hasn't done it, then you feel gross about the fact that he keeps on being harassed after serving his time. But remember, until he proves otherwise, he is a man who was convicted of murdering his wife and daughter, and his trial and his behaviour around that gripped the nation and frankly turned him into one of the most famous - or infamous - people in the country. So he is a legitimate news story And it's not really a question of whether the Herald should have taken those photos, it's actually just a question of where you were going to see that photo first. Because you were going to see it somewhere. If it wasn't on the Herald, it would be on some other news outlet, or just someone popping down to the local coffee shop, seeing Mark Lundy there, taking a photo of him, and putting it on social media. Cause we all know what he looks like, and clearly we're all interested in him - and it was going to happen sooner or later, wasn't it? Convicted double murderer Mark Lundy was on Wednesday released from prison, after being granted parole last month. The Parole Board also released the written decision outlining its reasons for releasing the 66-year-old. Lundy was twice found guilty of murdering his wife Christine and seven-year-old daughter Amber in their Palmerston North home in August 2000, but maintains his innocence. Reporter Jimmy Ellingham spoke to Lisa Owen.

Mark Lundy has been denied parole today after serving his minimum term of 20 years for the August 2000 murders of his wife Christine and daughter Amber in Palmerston North. At Tongariro Prison today he told the Parole Board he maintained his innocence. Lundy was convicted in 2002 and after those convictions were quashed by the Privy Council at a 2015 retrial. Our Manawatū reporter Jimmy Ellingham joins Lisa Owen to discuss the details.

MANAWATU. Four months into his sentence, in August of 2002, Mark Lundy took his case to the Court of Appeal based on the belief that he was convicted on “bad science”.  Upon upholding the conviction, the Court added an additional three years to Mark's non-parole period; bringing the total non-parole term to 20 years. The reason for the increase was due to the Court of Appeal believing the original trial judge was too lenient and didn't fully take into account the horrific circumstances of Amber Lundy's murder, “She must have died with the awful injuries to her mother as her last living memory ... we have to say that Mr Lundy's murder of his daughter in these circumstances, coming on top of the murder of his wife, requires denunciation and demonstration of society's abhorrence at a very high level". Mark Lundy took a call from a client who wanted to place an order; Mark emotionally communicated through tears that he couldn't right now as he was on his way home because “something happened to his wife and child”. Mark arrived home to ‘Palmy' about an hour and 16 minutes later at 1.15pm, police stopped Mark Lundy at the cordon about a block from 30 Karamea Crescent -- they had something to tell him. Police broke the news that both his wife Christine and daughter Amber were found dead that morning. It's believed the death of Peter Ellis will not affect the Supreme Court bid to clear his name.The convicted child sex offender died yesterday, two months before the court is scheduled to hear his appeal.He's always maintained his innocence, despite being found guilty of abusing children at a Christchurch creche in 1993.Massey University professor Chris Gallavin told Kate Hawkesby the case is not like David Bain or Mark Lundy, where retrials were held.He says because of the nature of the case and child witnesses being at the heart of the case - it was always going to be unlikely there would be a new trial.Gallavin says the court had made the unusual move of saying the prospect of Ellis dying before then, wouldn't be an impediment.LISTEN TO THE INTERVIEW ABOVE
