Timestamps: (6:40) - Creche update / Listener of the week (11:23) - Patty Wu-Murad Update (14:46) - Grace Millane British woman Grace Millane (21) had the world at her feet. She had just graduated university and was taking a year off to travel the world. After spending weeks in South America, Grace arrived in New Zealand in November 2018. She enjoyed meeting the locals and making new friends. In late November 2018, Grace matched on Tinder with a man named Jesse Kempson and the two decided to meet up. They enjoyed visiting some bars and restaurants in Auckland. The two hit it off and Grace decided to return to Jesse's place for the night. She was last seen getting out of an elevator in his apartment complex and was never seen again. Jesse murdered Grace that night. Over the coming hours, Jesse made internet searches including "rigor mortis", "extra large bags" and "carpet cleaner". He also went on another Tinder date that had been previously planned, while Grace's body was in his room. Jesse would end up confessing to Grace's murder and has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum non-parole period of 17 years. Just how much Polkinghorne is enough Polkinghorne? Today it was announced that South Pacific Pictures, together with UK based production companies, are developing an original limited drama series "The Mysterious Death of Pauline Hanna". I wonder what Pauline would say if she could see the outcome of her death. Firstly, her life was laid bare, her personal life forensically picked apart, discussed and judged in an eight-week court trial. A court case that was thoroughly covered by the media. Since then, it was announced there would be a three-part documentary series, funded by New Zealand On Air to screen at some point on ThreeNow, then we had the Tui billboards, and now we have the dramatization. That's a lot of people making money off the tragic story of the death of a woman. I totally understand why this is happening and get the appeal... you only have to look at how much this case captivated the nation. It's a universally appealing story filled with intriguing characters, scandals, sex, and drugs - let's be honest, you couldn't have come up with this story if you tried. But there needs to be more to it than capitalising on a scandalous story. As I aid after the documentary was made public, there is a fine line between examining the facts and revealing something meaningful, and preying on a victim's tragedy for entertainment's sake. The line in the press release that caught my attention was this: "By presenting the facts of the case in a responsible, forensic, and non-judgmental way, The Mysterious Death of Pauline Hanna will let the audience decide." Is that not what a court case is for? Okay - quite a bit of judgement was passed in that court case. But if you followed the court case, and remember Mr Polkinghorne was found not guilty, you have already probably made up your own mind on what happened. Do we need dramatization? Haven't we had enough? There is a place for true crime documentaries, podcasts, and dramatizations - they can be a powerful way to tell cautionary tales, and question our justice system and treatment of victims. Just look at the Grace Millane documentary streaming on Netflix - The Lie: The Murder of Grace Millane. This is a documentary that adds context to the story, reveals new information and footage, was delivered at a respectful time after Grace's death and most importantly, respected the victim and her family. At a time when the local production industry is hurting, it's good to hear about new productions with international funding. But if South Pacific Pictures goes ahead with this ratings winner, there is still an ethical obligation to do it with care and consideration for the victim, their family and friends. Listen in as Sean dives into the heartbreaking case of Grace Millane, a 21-year-old British traveller who set off on a dream gap year after finishing university. Grace's adventure turned into a nightmare when she arrived in Auckland in 2018 and went on a Tinder date with Jesse Kempson. What started as a night of bar hopping ended in tragedy when Grace was never seen alive again. Despite Jesse's denial of any involvement, CCTV footage tells a very different story. So, what really happened that night?Meanwhile, Skye takes us back to the 1800s with the Red Barn Murder, one of the most infamous cases in England's history. In 1827, Maria Marten was allegedly shot by her lover, William Corder, after the two met at the Red Barn to elope. For a year, Corder sent letters to her family, pretending she was alive, until Maria's stepmother had a vivid dream revealing her daughter's death. After Maria's body was discovered in the barn, the question remains—did William Corder really do it? And if he did, was justice truly served? Oh, and Skye has one more pressing question—how long does it actually take to boil an egg?Like, share, and subscribe—because you don't want to miss a single sip!
Over the past 9 weeks, the media and many in the country have been fixated on a court case that took place in Auckland. I am, of course, talking about the trial of Philip Polkinghorne, a wealthy, retired eye surgeon with a desire for methamphetamine, sex workers and quirky socks, who was accused of murdering his wife Pauline Hanna. He was found not guilty on Monday. The court case is over, thank goodness. I understand the media and public interest in this case due to its unique and scandalous nature – but I wish there had been less salivating. A woman is dead. Her personal life has been forensically picked apart, discussed and judged. Sometimes respectfully. Often not. The defence couldn't even call her by the name she went by – Pauline Hanna – referring to her as Mrs Polkinghorne. And now it's all going to be re-hashed in a three part documentary series, funded by New Zealand on Air and screening at some point on ThreeNow. I don't know what this documentary series will deliver or reveal, or who it will feature; but I hope it's doing more than just capitalising on a trial because it captured the nation's attention. True crime is a fascinating genre, whether it's a podcast, a documentary or a book. We're endlessly intrigued about what drives people to do bad things, and how they're treated by the law and justice system. But there is also a fine line between examining the facts and revealing something meaningful, and preying on a victim's tragedy for entertainment's sake. I hope there is no rush to release this docu-series. It needs to add further context and reveal more than what has been thoroughly covered in the media already. There is still a coronial inquest to come which will no doubt add to the conversation. Timing is also an issue. Respect must be shown to the victim and grieving family and friends who will still be coming to terms with the verdict. There is a place for true crime documentaries. They can be a powerful way to tell cautionary tales, and question our justice system and treatment of victims. The Lie: The Murder of Grace Millane, currently screening on Netflix, is an excellent example of this, and a must see. The documentary takes us behind the scenes with footage of the police investigation, reveals the deluded lies of the accused, examines the way the victim was represented in court, and demands the end of the rough sex defence. It's a true crime story that focuses on the facts, adds context to the story, and reveals new information through its interviews. Most importantly, it was made with the blessing of Grace's mother. I hope Pauline Hanna's family are given the same consideration. Regardless of whether you feel justice has been served or not, Pauline Hanna deserves to rest in peace. After sharing a few drinks together at several different bars around the centre of the city of Auckland, 21 year old British Backpacker Grace Millane and 26 year old New Zealand Native Jesse Kempson - who appeared to be enjoying one another's company - make their way back to Kempson's apartment at the CityLife Hotel. Entering an elevator together, the pair make their way up to the third floor of the building, where they then head into Kempson's £190-a-week room. As many drinks had been consumed, this is odd… But not too concerning for Grace, who had been told by the man she had matched with on Tinder, that he was “The Manager Of An Oil Company”. Unbeknownst to Grace, she has just entered the temporary home of a man with an extensive history of manipulative, abusive, highly troubling, and dangerous behaviours… And she would sadly not leave the room alive. Grace Millane, una mochilera británica de 22 años, desapareció durante una cita de Tinder en Nueva Zelanda. Una semana después de su desaparición, Jesse Kempson, de 26 años, fue arrestado sospechoso del asesinato de Grace Millane.
Cynric Temple-Camp is one of New Zealand's top pathologists - and he has just published his third book about his work. The Final Diagnosis is a collection of stranger-than-fiction stories of death, disease and murder - as well as Temple-Camp sharing new perspectives on high-profile cases, including the disappearance of Ben Smart and Olivia Hope and the trial of Mark Lundy. A Moment In Crime host Anna Leask spoke with Temple-Camp about the book, his career and why he is sure beyond reasonable doubt that Lundy is guilty. Episodes of A Moment In Crime - written and hosted by Leask - usually focus on old cases, cold cases or recent cases of national and international significance involving Kiwi offenders or victims. But this episode comes from the other side of the cordon - from a person often charged with determining how and why a person died and, who is responsible. To read more about Temple-Camp, the Lundy case and other crimes covered by Leask for the Herald, click here. Episodes of A Moment In Crime are usually released monthly and, so far, Leask has covered more than 55 cases including the murders of Grace Millane, Scott Guy, Austin Hemmings, Carmen Thomas, Karen Aim; the deaths of the Kahui Twins, the Edgeware Rd murders, the Bain family murders, the Christchurch House of Horrors and the massacres at Raurimu and Aramoana. Last year, a three-part special covered the case of rich lister and philanthropist James Wallace who was convicted of sexually assaulting three men and was jailed and had his knighthood stripped from him as a result. A Moment In Crime has topped the overall and true crime charts on numerous occasions, and has listeners in more than 80 countries. The podcast was a finalist at the 2024 NZ Radio & Podcast Awards and won a silver award in the true crime category at the inaugural New Zealand Podcast Awards in 2021. In December 2018, Grace Millane, a 22-year-old British backpacker, was tragically murdered while traveling in New Zealand. Her disappearance on the night of her birthday prompted an intense police investigation that led to the arrest of Jesse Kempson, who she had met on a dating app. The chilling details of her final hours revealed that she was strangled to death in Kempson's apartment, and her body was later found buried in a suitcase in a remote area. Kempson's trial exposed his deceitful and manipulative behavior, resulting in his conviction and a life sentence. The murder of Grace Millane sparked widespread media attention and ignited discussions about the safety of solo travelers and the dangers of online dating. The 2018 murder of 21-year old British backpacker Grace Millane gripped the country. A powerful new film The Lie explores how the shocking case highlights disturbing attitudes about violence towards women. It painstakingly pieces together Grace's final evening, stepping through the evidence the police used to make the case against her killer. The film also examines the controversial "rough sex defence", used by the defence team at the trial of Jesse Kempson, who was convicted of Grace's murder. The Lie is released in cinemas on April 25.

Episode 114: The Tragic Murder of Grace MillaneIn 2018, Grace Millane took herself on a celebratory vacation after having graduated from college with a degree in marketing and advertising. She decided to take a gap year between graduation and joining the workforce, and traveled to Auckland, New Zealand. There, she met a guy on tinder that she really seemed to hit it off with. Though CCTV footage captures her elevator ride up to his hotel room, no such footage shows her leaving. This case is one of callous murder, excellent investigative work, and one family's love and dedication to their daughter that they played a vital role in capturing her killer. Our guest today is Gillian Millane, a mother whose life was forever changed by a heartbreaking event that captured the world's attention. In December 2018, a young woman named Grace Millane was traveling in New Zealand. What was meant to be an exciting adventure for the bubbly 21 year old turned into a nightmare that no family should ever have to go through. On the eve of her 22nd birthday, Grace went on a date with a man she had met online in Auckland. During that date, he murdered her. He was charged on the 8thDecember 2018, but during the subsequent trial used a harrowing defence argument, the so-called ‘rough sex' defence. He was jailed for life. Gillian Millane has since become an advocate for justice, raising awareness about the importance of respecting and protecting the rights and safety of individuals, especially when they're far from home. She's here to share her story of turning pain into purpose, seeking justice, and ensuring that Grace's legacy lives on. The Extraordinary Ordinary, from Women of the Year, shines a light on incredible achievements by women who you've probably never heard of (until now), but whose passion, dedication, and fierce determination has changed society, their communities and the world, in ways that will inspire and uplift you. December 2nd 2018, 22-year old Grace Millane was touring New Zealand after recently graduating college. She matches with a man on Tinder and the two meet up for dinner and drinks before heading back to his hotel room. Days go by and no one back home has heard from her. Her date was seen exiting the hotel alone and wheeling a very full suitcase.
On December 2, 2018, the parents of twenty-one-year-old Grace Millane, a British tourist on vacation in New Zealand, became concerned when the birthday wishes they sent their daughter went unacknowledged. Having completed her degree at the University of Lincoln a few months earlier, Grace had spent several weeks traveling during her gap year but had been keeping in regular contact with her parents since leaving for her trip. When they still hadn't heard from their daughter three days later, Grace's parents called Auckland police and reported her missing. A week later, Grace Millane's body was discovered in a suitcase near an access road in the Waitakere Ranges, a dense wooded area about twelve miles outside Auckland. A day later, investigators arrested twenty-six-year-old Jesse Kempson, who was the last person seen with Grace on the night of the murder when the two were captured together by a CCTV camera going up to Kempson's room at the CityLife Hotel. Please Consider Signing this PetitionThank you to our favorite David White for research assistanceReferencesBBC News. 2018. The murder of British backpacker Grace Millane in New Zealand in 2018 was so heartless that her death would cause an outpouring of sympathy on 2 sides of the world. She swiped right on a man who killed her on their first date. She hadn't known that 8 month earlier, her date, Jesse Kempson raped another backpacker and had a history of violence. The world would watch on as police pieced together her last moments and caught her killer who would later use what was termed the "50 Shades of Gray Defense".
