I'm jumping in and telling you my money story. A few weeks ago I posted an episode with Melissa Whaley and her money story. We talked about how she's worked hard to share her money thoughts and attitude. Today I'm going to share my story as we're in the middle of the open cart for my new class series Renew Your Money Mindset. There's been so much that's gone into this class series. I've loved talking and learning about money mindset in the last 3 or 4 years. My first abundance challenge was in 2018. It's so cool to see God bring up the same topics repeatedly. In 2016, I wrote in my devotional, Created for This, and day 5 is called Money Matters. In this devotional, I read through the devotional and share the Bible passage Romans 12:13 which says, "Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality." Additionally, Matthew 6:20-24 says, "but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! “No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money." In this episode, you'll here: My own relationship with money has taken a lot of work to rewrite my thoughts on money. For me, it has been studying God's word and principles about money. Anxiety and fear over money and what would happen are still things I think about, but not to the same degree. My childhood money story has impacted my current money thoughts. My husband and I started our marriage with very little money and we have struggled a lot over the last 10 years. I share about how I've used money emotionally, resulting in debt and bad spending habits. How my viewpoint on money has changed as a result of my own need to turn around my spending habits - seeing myself as a steward of the money we've been given. Combating scarcity mindset with Bible verses. Specifically Philippians 4:19, "And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus." Affirmations have been so helpful when facing struggles with money. Meditating on the scripture verses has helped those biblical truths to take root in my heart. In order to get our money back under order, it's been hard. It's included arguments and frustrations in our marriage because of difficult money conversations. It's still a very emotional part of our lives for me. My own personal struggle to cut down on my spending. Following The Budget Mom and using her Budget by Paycheck method to help with overspending and saving money. Creating a mindset that focuses on generosity. The focus has been on stewardship which is something I'll be talking more about in the Renew Your Money Mindset classes. My whole outlook on money has changed. But it's been a heart change. I don't think it's wrong to desire more money when our focus is to bless others through generosity of sharing what God's given. I'm inviting you to step in and discover what God has for you, so you can have joy and freedom in an area God desperately wants to capture your heart. Renew Your Money Mindset is for you if you're wanting to learn money mindset from a Christian, biblically-based program. The live round closes on June 18. In today's episode, we're talking TAXES with my accountant and tax expert, Melissa Whaley. DOES TAX SEASON = PANIC ATTACK? When they say, “know your numbers”, it really means… “know your BUSINESS“. ABOUT MELISSA: Melissa Whaley is CEO, a licensed tax pro, financial strategist, public speaker, educator, and beachy California girl. With five kids, she understands the pressures and stresses of running a business. She grew up in a family of entrepreneurs and remembers hearing those all-too-familiar conversations about making money and tax deductions. She stumbled into taxes after signing up for a tax preparing class nine years ago. So it’s about two weeks after tax day here in the US, so by now you’ve probably gone through the tedious process of filing your income taxes. It’s the unglamourous part of online business that nobody really talks about. Sure, we all talk about the freedom, flexibility and financial independence that comes with being your own boss and owning your own business - but the flip side of that is that we’re also still responsible for all the boring and sometimes complicated administrative stuff that we also were annoyed by at our day jobs, like filling out expense reports and other tedious stuff like that. So when it comes to taxes, if you’re a side hustler, you’ve got that extra layer of reporting your side hustle income and expenses on top of your W2 wages, and then making sure you’re paying taxes to all the people you’re required to pay taxes to, like in my case it’s Federal, State and local, and I’m honestly never 100% confident that I’m doing it right. And I don’t know if you’ve ever had this experience, but the couple of times that I’ve tried to hire a CPA in the past, I left those meetings even more confused than when I walked in, feeling like I needed to learn a whole other language in order to follow the conversation and knowing that this definitely is not the right person for me if they can’t - or won’t - explain things to me in a way that I can understand. That’s why I’m so excited to bring you today’s guest, Melissa Whaley. She’s an accountant who works specifically with online business owners like us to help us understand the financial side our businesses without making us feel like total idiots in the process! I’m so excited to have Melissa on the podcast today, not only for my own selfish reasons because I’ve been doing my books and taxes on my own for so long and have always had this really uneasy feeling about whether or not I’m doing it right, but because Melissa’s just like us. She started out working at a large tax company, and she wanted the freedom, flexibility and financial independence that comes with running your own business - especially because she’s got four kids! But she saw a gap in the way her clients were being served, and she stepped in to fill it. Today on the podcast Melissa and I are talking about: Exactly how and why Melissa helps online entrepreneurs and side hustlers like us with our business financials and taxes. How Melissa took a skill she already had and turned it into an online business. The general rule for knowing when you need to start paying quarterly taxes when you’re still side hustling. How to look at your business finances in a way that makes sense as a layperson. What to pay attention to when it comes to your expenses. What to look for when choosing an accountant or CPA. How Melissa manages running her business as a wife and mother of four. Melissa’s best advice for growing your team. The one belief Melissa had to change about herself to get where she is today. It really helps you make that next good decision to move your business in a positive direction.” "It’s important to be able to step back, evaluate where you’re at and where your business is at and say, ‘Ok I need to make these changes.’” “We want to have businesses that make us feel good and feel fulfilled and we are enjoying serving other people.” Bio: Melissa is a Virtual Tax Advisor for creative business owners. What sets Christian business owners apart from the rest? Should we follow the standard business advice out there, or should we be doing things differently? In this conversation, Holly and I dive into the topic of business again. In episode 38, you heard Holly interview me as I shared about my business journey. But today, we are digging into some key principles that we believe set us apart as Christian women in business. Whether you have a business of your own, work in a business environment, or have considered working from home or starting a business, this episode is sure to give you some points to consider! And if you are someone who would like to earn some extra income from home, join me for my free workshop to help you understand your options. It's taking place April 9th, 2019 at 12:30pm Eastern. Sign up here for the free workshop:5 Ways to Earn Income From Home. Ministry or Business? Before we discuss the key principles, we want to tackle one question that we received in our private Facebook group: How do I know if I have a ministry or a business? Holly and I each share our perspectives on this, and we note that we all have a ministry, regardless of what kind of work we do. We are all called to bring glory to God in whatever we do, and we’re also called to make disciples. However, if we are purely discussing ministry vs. business in an organizational sense, we identify a ministry as typically being a non-profit organization whereas a business would be for-profit. In this conversation, we are primarily focusing on business in the traditional sense, where a product or service is being offered in exchange for money. 5 Key Business Principles as a Christian Business Owner: 1. Our focus is a Kingdom focus instead of an earthly one. Colossians 3:2 - “Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.” Having a Kingdom focus will affect the way we view work itself, the way we view our money, and the way we treat others. In episode 3, Abby Rike Rockenbaugh shared that in Christian leadership, we might do things differently than what the typical business advice might be. 2. We steward our money and recognize that it belongs to God. When we view our business finances in this way it really gives us a good perspective on how we handle things. We are working in God's business and we are handling God’s money so what we do with it matters. Deal with your money mindset. Take your finances seriously. It’s not wrong to make money. Hebrews 13:5 “Keep your life free from the love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, 'I will never leave you or forsake you.'" The issue is not earning money but rather having a love of money. It comes down to trusting God to provide what you need. At the same time, you need to be willing to work when necessary without being obsessed with money or wealth. Listen to the How They Blog episode about making money as a blogger or online. Listen to episode 35 with Melissa Whaley. Visit Holly's website to learn more about her bookkeeping services. Download Holly's FREE Guide: Best Practices for Handling Money as a Christian Business Owner 3. We treat our clients and customers as people made in God’s image, not just as a means to an end. We believe that if you are a Christian business owner, then every person you interact with should be treated with dignity and respect, because they are made in God’s image. This means that even if they hold different values than you do, or even if they are rude or unkind, we still have the choice to treat them with kindness. Also means that we don’t see our clients or customers just as dollar signs or stats on a page… but rather real people. Honesty, respect, and integrity should mark us as Christian business owners. It’s also important to remember that we never really know what others are going through. We are able to meet people’s needs and minister to them even in the business world by showing them love. Your business does not have to be faith-based to be effective or to be a ministry. 4. With our marketing, we are strategic but not sleazy. There’s a lot of things you can do in marketing that are legal and even praised in the business world…. But they can sometimes become sleazy. It’s possible to promote a product or service without being dishonest. It’s also vital not to be desperate in our marketing attempts. It’s not wrong to sell or to use marketing tools in your efforts, and it’s important to recognize that not everyone will love what you do or buy your product or service. 5. We operate out of our core values. What are core values? They are how we make our decisions. We all have them, but we’re not all intentional about identifying them. Getting clear on your core values will help you make clear decisions. Our core values should be connected to our faith in some way. When we follow other business mentors or leaders, we need to discern whether what they are teaching line up with our core values and/or line up with Biblical principles. It’s easy to get “FOMO” and feel worried about missing out on business or leads if you don’t know what your core values are. When our obsession becomes money, that is when it’s a wrong perspective and a wrong attitude.” “If I were to only serve Christian business owners, I’m actually losing an opportunity to minister to people who might not otherwise get to know God.” This episode was originally published on estherlittlefield.com/episode40.
Have you ever been hurt through your time in ministry? Do you wonder how to weave faith into the day-to-day operations of your business? What role does obedience play when you’re processing hard times while growing your business? In this episode, I talk with virtual tax advisor Melissa Whaley about what leadership looks like when you’re processing ministry hurts plus how our faith grows as we lead our businesses. Simple ways to weave your faith into your business: Share principles of what Jesus taught. In Melissa’s case, she shares about the importance of paying taxes and being honest. Don’t be ashamed to share your faith and talk about how God is working in your life. Melissa will share with others God’s view on money. Encourage people to grow in their faith. Melissa does this by encouraging people to be good steward of their business and personal finances. Processing ministry hurts Anyone who has gone through a church split or left a church knows that it’s emotionally difficult to process. After going through a split at her church, Melissa shared these lessons: Remember that it takes time to heal, trust, and start relationships again. You may need a change of pace like a house church. Obey what God asks you to do even if you don’t feel like doing it. Evaluate whether visiting a spiritual director might be a fit for you. Be kind to yourself as you adjust from having a leadership role to simply attending on a Sunday morning. Melissa’s book recommendations: Daring Greatly* by Brene Brown Rising Strong* by Brene Brown Key Quotes from episode: “If you have other people watching you and following your example, you’re a leader.” “God can equip you to lead in a small or large capacity.” “My purpose is not to make as much money as possible, but to serve people well and to help them and to weave my faith into my business." Something that has recently been mind-blowing to me was that when I was recently asked about how business was going, I responded that I was content with where I was. I’m usually the person who wants more money, I need more other things, I want to do more and be more. I’m content about my accountability coaching, teaching people about essential oils, my planner and my other side projects. Contentment is hard for me. I’m a perfectionist and I expect a lot from myself. I feel like I should be further along, or be making more money. As entrepreneurs, I feel like we have to constantly be reaching for more and better. For me, that contentment comes down to a lot of money mindset work. How is that possible? Well, I’ve been working a lot on knowing the numbers in my business. By knowing how much money we have, how much money I’m bringing in and where the money is going. My husband has a full-time job outside the home and our money is our two incomes combined. I feel in some ways responsible because I’m the one who is choosing to work so I’m the one paying the daycare bill and not paying the daycare bill which is ludacris. For me, knowing my number is how much I’m spending in my business if I’m not a payment plan if we need to buy groceries, or how much we need for other things. I know that the money that I’m making is taking care of our needs. I’m content knowing that what we’re doing is working and it’s good. I also know that our God is an abundant God. That’s been a huge switch for me recently. Contentment is so much of a heart game. Paul says in Philippians 4, that had learned to be content in all circumstances. This mindset shift is why I’m so passionate about what Melissa Whaley and I have put together for Know Your Numbers Live (formerly Q4 Financial Fix). Know Your Numbers Live is a 6-week program with training from Tax Advisor, Melissa Whaley, on Have a clear system on how to track your income and expenses Have the tools and skills to get your 2018 income and expenses sorted and ready for tax filing Gain a better understanding of how you work and how to prioritize the work The knowledge you need to take your business up a notch with Accountability Coach, me, Danielle Roberts, so you actually finish the program and start off 2019 on solid financial footing.
