Not every season is for pushing. In this episode, I'm talking about why the slower pace of summer isn't a sign that we're falling behind—it's actually a key part of growing our firms with intention. These quieter months give us rare breathing room to reassess, reset, and realign.I'm sharing how we treat summer at Little Fish Accounting like a business strategy retreat. We use this time to dig into what tax season taught us, refine our internal systems, and support our clients in doing the same. When we use slow periods intentionally, they become less about pausing and more about positioning our firms for what's next.(00:00) - Introduction to Seasonal Slowdowns (01:00) - Embracing the Summer Slowdown (01:49) - Reflecting and Resetting Your Business (02:34) - Mid-Year Review and Budget Assessment (03:46) - Evaluating Internal Processes (05:03) - Strategic Planning and Service Offerings (05:43) - Little Fish's Approach to Slow Seasons (07:57) - Taking Breaks and Personal Time (08:53) - Guiding Clients Through Midyear Reviews (10:09) - Conclusion: Making the Most of Slow Seasons Connect with Keila!LinkedIn - www.linkedin.com/in/keilahilltrawickWebsite - www.krht.coTwitter - x.com/littlefishcpaMore About Little Fish AccountingLearn more about Little Fish's suite of services at www.littlefishaccounting.com.Follow Little Fish Accounting at instagram.com/littlefishaccounting

Do you ever think about the things you wished you'd done in your life but didn't? In this week's episode, that's what I'm pondering…regret. One of the things I've come to know over the course of my life is that tomorrow is not promised and things can change on the drop of a dime. As a result, I have embarked on a path of creating a “No Regerts” kind of life. You might think that's a typo…it's not. It's from a Milky Way commercial from back in the day. You can watch it here if you're interested: No Regerts My thoughts on regret were prompted by a video that my mom sent out the other day. Watch it here: Video from Mom (Seven Life Lessons) and a book I read some years back by Bronnie Ware (Regrets of the Dying). These nudges were the catalyst for my reflections on my life and how I want to live going forward. I also share a story I heard from Simon Sinek on The Importance of Taking Breaks .Hopefully, this conversation will inspire you to create a “No Regerts” life, too! “Invest a little bit in a good microphone, know what you're doing, how to use it and make the best content and make the best quality content that you can. Trust me, it will make a massive difference.” I was absolutely blown away when I discovered A Vietnam Podcast had reached the top 5% of podcasts globally. It's been a rollercoaster—figuring out what works, what doesn't, and most importantly, learning to appreciate the process. So many podcasters, especially those just starting out, get caught up in comparing themselves to Joe Rogan or major network-backed shows. Podcasting is a long game, and with the right strategies anyone can carve out their own success story.Niall MackayKey Takeaways:Consistency is Key – The majority of podcasts fail because they don't make it past 10 episodes. Keep publishing, take breaks if needed, but always come back.Build a Back Catalog – 30% of my downloads come from older episodes, proving that having a strong library keeps listeners engaged. Audio Quality Matters More Than Content – People will forgive a lot, but bad audio will make them tune out instantly. Invest in a good mic. In Episode 8 of Building Better Developers Season 23, hosts Rob and Michael explore the importance of taking breaks for health. This episode, part of the “Building Better Habits” season, offers strategies for integrating breaks throughout the workday. From using the Pomodoro Technique to taking short, mindful walks, Rob and Michael show how stepping away can prevent burnout and improve focus. Using the Pomodoro Technique for Structured Breaks Rob begins by sharing his success with the Pomodoro Technique—a method of focused work intervals with short breaks. This approach helps him boost productivity and mental clarity during the day. Pomodoro's structured work blocks break tasks into manageable chunks, creating a rhythm for distracted developers. Rob explains how each break keeps him sharp and ready for complex tasks. Moving During Breaks: Small Actions, Big Benefits Michael highlights the benefits of moving during breaks, especially in colder months. He uses his Pomodoro breaks to stretch and take short walks. These brief pauses help his physical health and refresh his mind. Michael finds that even a few moments away from the screen brings renewed energy and focus. Scheduling Breaks Between Meetings Rob and Michael suggest using meeting times to schedule breaks. They recommend ending meetings five minutes early or starting them five minutes late. This buffer helps developers stretch, step away, and avoid back-to-back meetings. Pausing briefly between sessions can prevent meeting fatigue. The Benefits of a Simple Walk Rob suggests a simple but powerful break idea: taking short walks. Even five minutes of movement can improve well-being. A quick lap around the office or home relieves stiffness and improves circulation. Rob also notes these breaks provide a mental refresh and help reduce eye strain. Going Device-Free for a Mental Reset Michael advises leaving phones and devices behind during breaks for a true mental reset. Freeing yourself from digital distractions helps clear the mind. Both hosts agree this device-free time allows for a more effective recharge. They return to tasks with better focus and clarity. Buddy System: Building a Culture of Health Rob and Michael suggest teaming up with coworkers for short walks or breaks in office settings. A buddy system can make these breaks more enjoyable and encourage workplace health. Casual chats during these walks support mental well-being and can strengthen team bonds. The Episode Challenge: Three 5-Minute Walks Rob challenges listeners in this episode to take three 5-minute walks during the workday. These breaks aren't for casual tasks but for deliberate, intentional walks. Rob emphasizes the importance of a conscious break to reset and recharge. Whether it's a quick lap outside or around the office, these three walks boost physical health and mental clarity. The Dangers of a Sedentary Lifestyle Both hosts warn of the risks of prolonged sitting, including poor posture, weight gain, and health issues. Integrating intentional breaks, such as standing desks and regular walks, can help counter these effects. Developers can improve overall health and boost productivity with small, healthy habits. Final Thoughts: Making Breaks a Habit for Long-Term Success Rob reminds listeners of the long-term career benefits of regular breaks. These small actions require no drastic changes, and they make a big difference. Healthier developers are happier, more productive, and better at their work. Rob and Michael encourage listeners to try these strategies, building a sustainable career and a balanced life.
