Spiritual initiates from every religion have existed, conveying their teachings through diverse scriptures, allegories, and symbols. The Jewish mystics were no different. However, their knowledge was codified in such a way as to provide accessibility and insight for those who were trained to read, interpret, and understand with an awakened consciousness. This lecture builds on Kabbalah: The Doctrine of Soul and Spirit, describing how five elements of Medieval Judaism can inform our understanding of initiatic life, specifically through Aggadah (narrative tradition), Halakah (Jewish law), Piyyut (liturgical prayer), Merkavah mysticism (the science for creating the soul), and The Sefer Yetzirah (a profound scripture of magical, initiatic import).

What if we made it to Sinai but did not receive the Torah? Would that have been enough? Could there have been a Shavuos? What is Kabbalas HaTorah without Torah? Maybe, there is a additional element of Ma'amad Har Sinai that we could have and could still tap into on Shavuos. We will try to identify it as we ride the Divine Chariot.
118. Moreh Nevukhim 2:10 (cont.) - Recurring Patterns of Four and Ma'aseh Merkavah with Rabbi Daniel Korobkin at Bayt
How angels were created, daily, for the purpose of singing the praises of God... Or via the utterances of God. Plus, R. Akiva's foray into aggadic interpretation and the double rebuke he receives for his efforts. Also, how R. Yochanan ben Zakkai taught, or didn't, the Ma'aseh Merkavah to R. Elazar ben Arakh. And what happens to R. Elazar ben Arakh when he delves in on his own, including the creation of angel(s), and the connection of his enterprise to Avraham Avinu. Plus, the rainbow in the cloud when R. Yehoshua and others were learning Ma'aseh Merkavah.
Delving into Ma'aseh Merkavah, when we're not supposed to learn it at all... Who should not be studying Ma'aseh Merkavah? Perhaps everyone, but broad strokes may be acceptable, or acceptable for a select few. Plus, the words of the Torah are not to be taught to a non-Jew. And how R. Elazar defers his opportunities to learn Ma'aseh Merkavah. Also, the purported hiding of the Book of Ezekiel, and the way it was accepted for study - but with some possibly innate danger, nonetheless. Plus the term "chashmal."
On the illicit sexual relationships bring explicitly listed in the Torah - even that list leaves out some prohibited relationships. Plus, a statement by the mishnah on the essence of the Torah that the Gemara understands to be both explicit and derived details of halakhah. Also, chapter 2: Limiting the public study or discourse on certain topics, from the sexually illicit relationships to Ma'aseh Merkavah, and the metaphysics of the Divine. With some caveats, of course. Plus, other topics to avoid.

The meaning of the Keruvim: one face represents the way Torah is invested in our world, Hashem's self-constraining into a Torah that has relevance to our world, and the other face represents our attempt to ascend to Hashem through Davening, which causes Hashem's “descent” into Torah. A verse about that which was concealed is understood to mean either that secrets of Torah were hidden away - as in details of Creation, or Ma'aseh Merkavah, or perhaps the meaning of mitzvot altogether. Note that God rejoices when He is "conquered" by people. For example, when Moshe convinces God not to destroy Bnei Yisrael. Also, more on Hallel. But with a twist - that God is rejoicing in us. First, Avraham, Yitzchak, Yaakov, on down, each refusing to accept that they are deserving of His honor, until David - to whom more of the Tehillim are ascribed than anyone else. Plus, afikoman, which seems to be a delicacy that is eaten after the meal (of the Korban Pesach). A completely different meaning from our afikoman today.

This afternoon (1/5/21 at YBT) finished the Moreh ha'Nevuchim 1:34 on why a person shouldn't begin with metaphysics, raising additional questions along the way which we hope to revisit one day. We then began Hilchos Yesodei ha'Torah Chapter 3, which is an overview of Maaseh Bereishis in accordance with Aristotelian astronomy and physics. We prefaced this by talking about why we're even bothering to read something which has long been debunked. ----------מקורות:רמב"ם - מורה הנבוכים א:לדרמב"ם - משנה תורה, ספר המדע, הלכות יסודי התורה ג:א-ג ----------Bekius Disclaimer: Note that this is a bekius chavurah - as opposed to an iyun shiur. This afternoon (12/31/20 at YBT) we began reading the Rambam's explanations/warnings in the Moreh ha'Nevuchim about metaphysics. We read through Book 1 Chapters 31-32 on the limitations of the human intellect, Chapter 33 on the danger of beginning with metaphysics, and we made it part way through Chapter 34 on the five reasons why one should not engage in the premature subject of metaphysics. We'll have to wait until next week to finish this chapter.----------מקורות:רמב"ם - מורה הנבוכים א:לא-לד----------Bekius Disclaimer: Note that this is a bekius chavurah - as opposed to an iyun shiur. This afternoon (12/30/20 at YBT) we finished the Rambam's commentary on Chagigah 2:1, in which he explained why the teaching and learning of Maaseh Merkavah (metaphysics) and Maaseh Bereishis (physics) are restricted. We then skipped ahead in the Mishneh Torah to Hilchos Yesodei ha'Torah 4:10-13, where he compares and contrasts Maaseh Merkavah and Maaseh Bereishis and discusses their role in a person's development. We concluded by reading the Rambam's introduction to the Moreh ha'Nevuchim Book 3, in which he explains how it will be possible for him to write about Maaseh Merkavah without violating Chazal's injunctions against teaching it publicly. ----------מקורות:רמב"ם - פירוש המשניות חגיגה ב:ארמב"ם - משנה תורה, ספר המדע, הלכות יסודי התורה ד:י-יגרמב"ם - מורה הנבוכים הקדמה לחלק ג ----------Bekius Disclaimer: Note that this is a bekius chavurah - as opposed to an iyun shiur. This afternoon (12/29/20 at YBT) we read the Rambam's remarks about maaseh merkavah (a.k.a. "the work of the chariot" a.k.a. "metaphysics") at the end of the 2nd chapter of the Mishneh Torah, then took a detour to the first source where he addresses this topic, which is his commentary on Chagigah 2:1. Tomorrow we will finish that source and then read his warnings about Maaseh Merkavah and Maaseh Bereishis in the Moreh ha'Nevuchim.----------מקורות:רמב"ם - משנה תורה, ספר המדע, הלכות יסודי התורה ב:יא-יברמב"ם - פירוש המשניות חגיגה ב:א----------Bekius Disclaimer: Note that this is a bekius chavurah - as opposed to an iyun shiur.
