As discussed in a previous installment, the Ana Be'cho'ah prayer, which consists of 42 words, alludes to the special 42-letter Name of G-d. We conclude this prayer with the exclamation, "Baruch Shem Kebod Malchuto Le'olam Va'ed" – "Blessed is the Name of the Majesty of His Kingship, forever and ever." After reciting the prayer expressing the divine Name, we make this proclamation giving praise to the Name of the Almighty. This proclamation is significant in that the first letters of its six words – Bet, Shem, Kaf, Mem, Lamed and Vav – are the only letters in the Hebrew alphabet that are used as prefixes to G-d's Name. These six letters can be appended to the Name to form the words "B'Hashem" (as in "Ach B'Hashem Al Timrodu" – Bamidbar 14:9), "She'Hashem" (as in "Ashreh Ha'am She'Hashem Elokav" – Tehillim 144:15), "K'Hashem" (as in "K'Hashem Elokenu Be'chol Kore'nu Elav" – Debarim 4:7), "Me'Hashem" (as in "Me'Hashem Yasa Ha'dabar" – Bereishit 24:50), "L'Hashem" (as in "L'Hashem Ha'yeshu'a" – Tehillim 3:9), and "V'Hashem" (as in "V'Hashem Holech Lifnehem" – Shemot 13:21). These letters thus have a special connection to Hashem's Name, and so we proclaim "Baruch Shem…" after making a reference to the divine Name. The Ben Ish Hai (Rav Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909), in his work Torah Li'shmah, writes that although this proclamation is made silently when it is recited during the Shema reading, in other contexts it may be recited aloud. Accordingly, we do not need to recite "Baruch Shem" silently when we say Ana Be'cho'ah during the Korbanot section each morning. However, Hacham Ovadia Yosef noted that elsewhere in his writings (Od Yosef Hai), the Ben Ish Hai contradicts this ruling, and writes that "Baruch Shem" must be recited silently even in Ana Be'cho'ah. The accepted practice is to recite it silently in Ana Be'cho'ah just as we do during the reading of Shema.

The Mishna at the end of Masechet Menahot (110a) teaches: "Ehad Ha'marbeh Ve'ehad Ha'mam'it, U'bilbad She'yechaven Libo La'Shamayim" – "Whether one does much or one does little, as long as he directs his heart toward Heaven." The point made by the Mishna is that the most important factor is not the amount that one actually manages to accomplish, but rather the extent to which he maximizes his potential and does his best. A person who is able to learn six hours a day is not necessarily greater than a person who is able to learn just one hour day, as these two individuals might face very different circumstances. If the first individual learns for six hours but has the ability to learn even more, whereas the second only has an hour for learning and takes full advantage of that hour, then the second is greater than the first. This is true also of scholarly achievement, charity, Hesed, community involvement, and so on. Not everyone is in the position to do the same amount. Every individual has his unique set of strengths, weaknesses, talents, struggles, challenges and circumstances, and no two people's expectations are thus exactly alike. The most important thing is "She'yechaven Libo La'Shamayim" – that one sincerely invests the greatest effort that he can and achieves to the very best of his ability. Hacham Ovadia Yosef noted that the word "Leb" ("heart") consists of the letters Lamed and Bet. These two letters are preceded by the letters Kaf and Alef – which spell the word "Ach" ("only"), and are followed by the letters Mem and Gimal – which spell the word "Gam." Now the Gemara teaches us that the word "Ach" implies a "Mi'ut," an exclusion, and when it appears in the Torah in the context of a Halacha, it indicates that something is excluded from the law in question. Conversely, the word "Gam" implies a "Ribui," an extension, that the law includes something that we might not have expected it to. The word "Leb" is thus "surrounded" by both "Marbeh" and "Mam'it," by an allusion to a large amount and an allusion to a smaller amount. This reinforces the notion that the most important thing is the heart, one's sincerity, one's genuine quest for excellence and devoted efforts to do the most he can. This – and not the bottom-line result – is what matters to Hashem and what should matter to us.

In der Podcast-Folge "Blick in die Bibel" am Samstag sprechen Diakon Thorsten Giertz und Moderator Mathias Peter zum Abschluss der Woche darüber, wie man Ostern im Alltag weiterleben kann: indem man jeden Tag neu Hoffnung zulässt und offen auf andere zugeht. Im Bibeltext des Tages geht es dann um Jesus, der über das Wasser zu seinen Jüngern läuft, die im Boot auf dem See sind und zunächst große Angst vor ihm haben. Giertz erklärt: Es geht nicht darum, dass Jesus mit dem Laufen auf dem Wasser etwas beweisen wil, sondern um Vertrauen. Jesu Worte "Habt keine Angst" gelten auch heute. One who recites Kaddish must ensure while saying the phrase "Be'alma Di Bera" to pronounce "Di Bera" as two separate words. If one recites this phrase too quickly, he will end up saying, "Dibera," as one word, which is incorrect. He must be careful to recite two separate words – "Di" and "Bera." Different opinions exist regarding the pronunciation of the word "Chi'r'uteh" in the phrase "Be'alma Di Bera Chi'r'uteh," as according to some views, the letter Chaf has a Dagesh (dot), such that it should be pronounced "Ki'r'uteh." The debate hinges on how to read this phrase. The basic rule is that when any of the letters Bet, Gimmel, Dalet, Kaf, Peh or Tav appears at the beginning of the word, it receives a Dagesh. The exception to this rule is when the preceding word ends with an Alef, Heh, Vav or Yod, in which case the word does not receive a Dagesh. In the case of "Chi'r'uteh," then, it would seem that since the previous word ("Bera") ends with the letter Alef, the Chaf at the beginning of "Chi'r'uteh" should remain without a Dagesh, and thus be pronounced "Chi'r'uteh." Indeed, this is how the word is punctuated in many editions of the Siddur. However, Hacham Ovadia Yosef ruled that the more correct pronunciation is "Ki'r'uteh." He explained that although the previous word ends with an Alef, that word – "Bera" – is not connected to the word "Ki'r'uteh." The word "Ki'r'uteh" means "in accordance with His will," and Hacham Ovadia explained, based on a passage in Masechet Sofrim, that this word modifies not the immediately preceding words, but rather the beginning of Kaddish, when we pray for G-d's Name to be glorified. We pray that His Name should be sanctified and praised "Ki'r'uteh" – in fulfillment of His will. Hence, the word "Ki'r'uteh" stands separate and apart from the words "Di Bera," and so the Heh at the end of the word "Bera" does not affect the letter Chaf at the beginning of the word "Ki'r'uteh." We thus apply the standard rule that a Chaf at the beginning of a word receives a Dagesh, such that the word should be pronounced "Ki'r'uteh." Rav Meir Mazuz (1945-2025) disputed Hacham Ovadia's position. He noted that the Abudarham (Spain, 14 th century) interpreted "Di Bera Chi'r'uteh" to mean, "that He created in accordance with His will." According to this reading, the word "Chi'r'uteh" indeed modifies the immediately preceding words – "Di Bera," such that the letter Chaf should not receive a Dagesh. Rav Mazuz conceded, however, that the passage in Masechet Sofrim indeed implies that "Chi'r'uteh" modifies the earlier part of the sentence, and not the words "Di Bera." In practice, different customs exist. Tunisian communities pronounce the word "Ki'r'uteh," whereas the custom among the communities in Aleppo, Syria was to pronounce it "Chi'r'uteh." Rav Yisrael Bitan writes that Hacham Ovadia, despite preferring the pronunciation of "Ki'r'uteh," acknowledged that those who pronounce it "Chi'r'uteh" have a legitimate basis for this practice. Therefore, each community should follow its custom. Summary: One who recites Kaddish must ensure while saying the phrase "Be'alma Di Bera" to pronounce "Di Bera" as two separate words, and not as one word ("Dibera"). Weil sie ihn aber wegen der vielen Leute nicht bis zu Jesus bringen konnten, deckten sie dort, wo Jesus war, das Dach ab, schlugen die Decke durch und ließen den Gelähmten auf seiner Liege durch die Öffnung hinab. Als Jesus ihren Glauben sah, sagte er zu dem Gelähmten: Mein Sohn, deine Sünden sind dir vergeben! Einige Schriftgelehrte aber, die dort saßen, dachten in ihrem Herzen: Wie kann dieser Mensch so reden? Er lästert Gott. Wer kann Sünden vergeben außer dem einen Gott? Jesus erkannte sogleich in seinem Geist, dass sie so bei sich dachten, und sagte zu ihnen: Was für Gedanken habt ihr in euren Herzen? Was ist leichter, zu dem Gelähmten zu sagen: Deine Sünden sind dir vergeben! oder zu sagen: Steh auf, nimm deine Liege und geh umher? Damit ihr aber erkennt, dass der Menschensohn die Vollmacht hat, auf der Erde Sünden zu vergeben – sagte er zu dem Gelähmten: Ich sage dir: Steh auf, nimm deine Liege und geh nach Hause! Er stand sofort auf, nahm seine Liege und ging vor aller Augen weg. One of the verses in the "Az Yashir" song which our ancestors sang after the miracle of the splitting of the Yam Suf – and which we recite each morning toward the end of Pesukeh De'zimra – is "Mi Chamocha Ba'elim Hashem, Mi Kamocha Ne'edar Be'kodesh." Although both halves of this verse begin with the same two words ("Mi Chamocha"), the pronunciation is not identically the same in both halves. At the beginning of the verse, the correct pronunciation is "Mi Chamocha," whereas in the second half, these words should be pronounced "Mi Kamocha." The phrase "Mi Kamocha" in the second half of the verse marks an exception to a rule of Hebrew grammar. The basic rule is that a Bet, Gimmel, Dalet, Kaf, Peh or Tav at the beginning of a word receives a Dagesh (dot), in which case, in principle, the letter Kaf at the beginning of "Kamocha" should receive a Dagesh, and should thus be pronounced "Kamocha." However, when the previous word ends with a Heh, Vav or Yod – such as the word "Mi," which ends with the letter Yod – the Dagesh is not added. Hence, according to the rules of grammar, the phrase should be pronounced "Mi Chamocha." Nevertheless, the second half of this verse is exceptional, and the Dagesh is, in fact, added to the Kaf, resulting in the pronunciation of "Mi Kamocha." When one recites this verse, he must ensure not to say the words "Hashem Mi Kamocha" rapidly, such that it sounds like he says, "Hashem Micha" – as though declaring that Micha is G-d, Heaven forbid. Micha was the person responsible for creating the golden calf at Mount Sinai, and one must be careful not to imply that he is a deity. Sepharadim make a distinction in their pronunciation between a letter Gimal that has a Dagesh, and a letter Gimal that does not. In the phrase "Am Zu Ga'alta," the Gimal at the beginning of "Ga'alta" receives a Dagesh. According to the rule mentioned earlier, this letter should not receive a Dagesh, because the previous word ("Zu") ends with the letter Vav. The reason why this Gimal nevertheless receives a Dagesh is that without a Dagesh, the word would sound like "Ga'alta" spelled with an Ayin (as opposed to an Alef), which would mean that Hashem is repulsed by Beneh Yisrael, Heaven forbid. Pronouncing the Gimal with a Dagesh makes it clear that the word is "Ga'alta" with an Alef, which means that Hashem has redeemed Beneh Yisrael. A similar exception is made earlier in this verse, in the phrase "Yidemu Ka'aben." The Kaf at the beginning of "Ka'aben" should, in principle, not receive a Dagesh, because it follows a word that ends with the letter Vav. Nevertheless, the Dagesh is added to the Kaf, as otherwise this phrase might sound like "Yidemucha Aben" – "stone silences You," indicating that stone has some kind of power to defeat the Almighty, Heaven forbid. At one point in "Az Yashir," the Egyptians' drowning is described with the words "Salelu Ka'oferet Be'mayim Adirim" – the Egyptians plunged into the water like lead. There is some question as to the implication of the word "Adirim" – "mighty" – at the end of this verse. Several Poskim, including the Mishna Berura, Ben Ish Hai, and Kaf Ha'haim, explain that this word describes the Egyptian warriors who drowned. Accordingly, these Poskim maintain that when reading this verse, one must make a pause between the words "Mayim" and "Adirim," as otherwise it sounds as though one describes the water as being mighty. However, Rav Meir Mazuz (1945-2025) found a poem written by Rav Yehuda Ha'levi (Spain, 1075-1141) indicating that he understood the phrase "Mayim Adirim" to mean "mighty waters," referring to the turbulence of the waters as they descended onto the Egyptians and drowned them. According to this reading, this phrase should be read without a pause between "Mayim" and "Adirim." It is customary to repeat the final verse of "Az Yashir" – "Hashem Yimloch Le'olam Va'ed." One reason this is done is so that we end up mentioning the Name of "Havaya" in this song 18 times, which has special significance. Additionally, the verse is repeated to mark the conclusion of the song. We then recite the Aramaic translation of this final verse ("Hashem Malchuteh Ka'em…") and then the verse immediately following the song – "Ki Ba Sus Pharaoh…"

The heart of the Pesukeh De'zimra section consists of the final five chapters of Tehillim, each of which begin and end with the word "Halleluy-ah." While all five of these chapters are significant, the third and fifth chapters (Psalm 148 & Psalm 150) – "Halleluy-ah Halelu Et Hashem" and "Halleluy-ah Halelu Kel Be'kodsho" – are the most important. Therefore, if a person arrives late, and is unable to recite all five chapters, he should try to recite at least these two. We present here a number of insights into these chapters in order for us to get a glimpse of the unlimited depth and countless layers of meaning underlying the words. In the first of these chapters, we proclaim, "Ahalela Hashem Be'hayai, Azamera L'Elokai Be'odi" – "I shall praise G-d in my lifetime; I shall sing to my G-d while I still exist." The word "Be'hayai" ("in my lifetime") has been understood to mean when we are still healthy and functioning. As long as we are physically capable of speaking and giving praise to the Almighty, we are obliged to do so. Rav Chaim Brim (Jerusalem, 1922-2002) noted the implication of this verse that one of the most important things in life, one of our most central obligations, is to give praise to Hashem. Among the purposes of our existence here in this world is to recognize Hashem's goodness, to express our gratitude, and to sing His praises. If a person would be asked what he would do if, after his passing, he could be resurrected for five minutes, his response should be that he would use this time to praise Hashem. This concept is emphasized further in the next chapter, which begins, "Halleluy-ah Ki Tob Zamera L'Elokenu" – we should praise Hashem because "it is good to sing to our G-d." One of the greatest privileges we have is the opportunity to praise Hashem each and every day. The fourth of these five chapters exclaims, "Shiru L'Hashem Shir Hadash" – "Sing a new song to G-d." This verse uses the masculine term for song – "Shir" – as opposed to the feminine form – "Shira." The difference between the masculine and feminine form is that the feminine form implies succession, that there will be other songs, just as a woman produces children, whereas the masculine form refers to a song that does not produce more songs. The masculine term "Shir" is used in this Psalm because it speaks of the final song, the song that we will sing at the time of Mashiah's arrival. Indeed, the end of this chapter talks about G-d taking revenge from Israel's enemies – "La'asot Nekama Ba'goyim" – as it refers to the final redemption, when our enemies will be vanquished. The final of these chapters, "Halleluy-ah Halelu Kel Be'kodsho" – concludes with the verse, "Kol Ha'neshama Tehalel Y-ah Halleluy-ah" – "Every soul shall praise G-d, Halleluy-ah" – and it is customary to recite this concluding verse twice. One of the reasons given is that by repeating this verse, we end up recite the verb "Hallelu"/"Tehalel" twelve times, an allusion to the custom to recite Hallel on Rosh Hodesh, at the beginning of each of the twelve months of the year. The Arizal taught that the first letters of the words "Kol Ha'neshama Tehalel" – Kaf, Heh and Tav – spell a Name of Hashem associated with protection from danger. Having this intention while reciting these words can help protect a person from harm. It is likewise recommended to recite these words with this intention anytime one fears some sort of danger. The Arizal noted that this also helps protect pregnant women from miscarriage. Rav David Abudarham (Spain, 14 th century) writes that the Pesukeh De'zimra service is constructed in a manner that corresponds to the "Asara Ma'amarot" – the ten pronouncements through which G-d brought the world into existence. Pesukeh De'zimra begins with the blessing of Baruch She'amar, which corresponds to the first pronouncement. It is followed by Mizmor Le'toda – which parallels the second pronouncement, that of "Va'yehi Or" ("There shall be light"), and so on. The chapter of "Halleluy-ah Halelu Kel Be'kodsho" corresponds to the final pronouncement, the creation of Adam, and thus concludes, "Every soul shall praise G-d," emphasizing the point that the human being is the only one among the world's creatures capable of giving praise to G-d. After completing these five chapters of Tehillim, we recite four verses: "Baruch Hashem Le'olam Amen Ve'amen" (Tehillim 89:53); "Baruch Hashem Mi'sion, Shochen Yerushalayim…" (Tehillim 135:21); "Baruch Hashem Elokim Oseh Niflaot Le'bado U'baruch Shem Kebodo Le'olam…" (72:18-19). The first of these verses marks the conclusion of the third of the five books of Tehillim, and the fourth and fifth verses mark the conclusion of the second book. We thus recite these verses as a fitting conclusion to our recitation of Tehillim in Pesukeh De'zimra. Additionally, the first verse has five words, corresponding to the congregation's five-word response to Barechu – "Baruch Hashem Ha'meborach Le'olam Va'ed." The second verse consists of six words, alluding to the six words of the verse "Shema Yisrael Hashem Elokenu Hashem Ehad." Finally, the third and fourth verses contain a total of 19 words, paralleling the 19 blessings of the Amida prayer. The first and final verses conclude with "Amen Ve'amen." The Ben Ish Hai (Rav Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909) explains that the word "Amen" is repeated to affirm the eternal truth of our praise of Hashem, both in this world and the next. One should not add other chapters of Tehillim or other verses in Pesukeh De'zimra. For example, if somebody completed Pesukeh De'zimra before the Hazan, he should not add recitations while he waits for the Hazan to finish. Neither should a person repeat any of the text of Pesukeh De'zimra. Even if one realized that he had recited Pesukeh De'zimra without Kavana (concentration), he should not repeat it. (The exception is the verse "Pote'ah Et Yadecha U'masbi'a…" which should be repeated if it was recited without Kavana, as we discussed in a previous installment.)

Each morning before Baruch She'amar, the congregation stands and the Hazan declares, "Hashem Melech, Hashem Malach, Hashem Yimloch Le'olam Va'ed" – "Hashem is King, Hashem was King, Hashem will be King for all eternity." The congregation then repeats this proclamation after the Hazan. Our custom is to make this proclamation twice. There is an opinion that a Minyan is required for pronouncing "Hashem Melech," but the accepted view is that this may be said even without a Minyan, and so if ten men have yet to arrive by this point, "Hashem Melech" may nevertheless be recited. Some communities have the practice that a child leads the congregation in reciting "Hashem Melech." It would seem, however, that it is more proper to choose someone who is at least Bar-Misva age to lead this proclamation. The Ben Ish Hai (Rav Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909) brings a custom to lift one's feet when reciting "Hashem Melech," like we do when reciting "Kadosh, Kadosh, Kadosh." This symbolizes the "elevation" that we experience through this recitation, as we make our way toward the higher realms until we reach the highest level in the heavens so we can recite the Amida directly in Hashem's presence. One who follows this custom must ensure to do so in a discreet, unassuming manner, and not in a way that draws attention to himself. The Arizal (Rav Yishak Luria, Safed, 1534-1572) taught that the pronouncement of "Hashem Melech" is associated with our quest to neutralize the 280 "Kelipot," or negative energies, that threaten us. These 280 forces are alluded to in the names of the five letters of the Hebrew alphabet that are changed when they appear at the end of a word: Mem, Nun, Sadi, Peh, Kaf (represented by the acrostic "Mansapach"). The combined numerical value of these letters is 280. When we succeed in "subjugating" these 280 forces, the Arizal taught, Mashiah will come. In the proclamation of "Hashem Melech," the words "Melech" and "Malach" both have the Gematria of 90, and the word "Yimloch" equals 100 – for a total of 280, thus alluding to the "Kelipot." The Name of "Havaya" is mentioned three times in this proclamation ("Hashem Melech, Hashem Malach, Hashem Yimloch"), and in Gematria it equals 26, for a total of 78 (26 * 3). Adding this to 280, we arrive at a total of 358 – the Gematria of "Mashiah" (40+300+10+8). This daily proclamation, then, is a crucial part of our effort to overcome the harmful spiritual forces in the world so that we will become worthy of the arrival of Mashiah.

Wahrhaftig, das sage ich euch: In Israel gab es viele Witwen in den Tagen des Elíja, als der Himmel für drei Jahre und sechs Monate verschlossen war und eine große Hungersnot über das ganze Land kam. Aber zu keiner von ihnen wurde Elíja gesandt, nur zu einer Witwe in Sarépta bei Sidon. Und viele Aussätzige gab es in Israel zur Zeit des Propheten Elíscha. Aber keiner von ihnen wurde geheilt, nur der Syrer Náaman.Als die Leute in der Synagoge das hörten, gerieten sie alle in Wut. Sie sprangen auf und trieben Jesus zur Stadt hinaus; sie brachten ihn an den Abhang des Berges, auf dem ihre Stadt erbaut war, und wollten ihn hinabstürzen. Er aber schritt mitten durch sie hindurch und ging weg. (Lk 4,16-30) 

In jener Zeit, als Jesus und seine Jünger in Galiläa zusammen waren, sagte Jesus zu ihnen: Der Menschensohn wird in die Hände von Menschen ausgeliefert werden und sie werden ihn töten; aber am dritten Tag wird er auferweckt werden. Da wurden sie sehr traurig. Als Jesus und die Jünger nach Kafárnaum kamen, traten jene, welche die Doppeldrachme einzogen, zu Petrus und fragten: Zahlt euer Meister die Doppeldrachme nicht? Er antwortete: Doch! Als er dann ins Haus hineinging, kam ihm Jesus mit der Frage zuvor: Was meinst du, Simon, von wem erheben die Könige dieser Welt Zölle und Steuern? Von ihren eigenen Söhnen oder von den anderen Leuten? Als Petrus antwortete: Von den anderen!, sagte Jesus zu ihm: Also sind die Söhne frei. Damit wir aber bei ihnen keinen Anstoß erregen, geh an den See, wirf die Angel aus und den ersten Fisch, den du heraufholst, nimm, öffne ihm das Maul und du wirst ein Vierdrachmenstück finden. Das gib ihnen als Steuer für mich und für dich.

**Today's Halacha is dedicated f or the refuah and haslacha of Ronnie, Sharon, Eli and all the children of CARE** The widespread custom among all Sephardic communities is to recite "Viduy," or confession, immediately following the Amida both at Shaharit and at Minha. This custom is based upon passages in the Zohar (the principal text of Kabbala) and the writings of the Arizal (Rabbi Yishak Luria, 1534-1572). We introduce "Viduy" with the recitation of "Ana Hashem Elokenu V'Elokeh Abotenu…" After "Viduy," we proceed to the recitation of the Thirteen Attributes of Mercy ("Hashem, Hashem…") and Nefilat Apayim ("Le'David…"). The Arizal instructed that the "Viduy" should be recited according to the sequence of the Hebrew alphabet. We thus begin with "Ashamnu" – a word that starts with the letter "Alef" – followed by "Bagadnu," and so on. When we come to the letters that take on a different form when appearing at the end of a word ("Kaf," "Mem," "Nun," "Peh" and "Sadi"), we recite two words with that letter. Thus, for example, for "Kaf" we recite "Kizabnu" and "Ka'asnu," and for the letter "Mem" we recite "Maradnu" and "Marinu Debarecha." This was the position of the Arizal, and the custom in Yeshivat Bet El, as documented by the Ben Ish Hai (Rabbi Yosef Haim of Baghdad, 1833-1909), in Parashat Ki-Tisa. The entire confessional text in recited in plural form. For example, we recite "Ashamnu" ("We bear guilt"), as opposed to "Ashamti" ("I bear guilt"), and so on. The Sha'ar Hakavanot writes that one must recite the entire "Viduy" even if he knows with certainty that he has not transgressed one or several of the violations enumerated in the "Viduy" text. It is possible that he has transgressed the given violation in a previous Gilgul (incarnation of the soul), or that a person whose soul is connected to his soul is guilty of that transgression. He may have also unwittingly caused others to violate the sin, or perhaps violated a sin resembling the transgression in question. For all these reasons, one should not skip any part of the "Viduy" even if he thinks he has not violated one of the sins mentioned. "Viduy" must be recited while standing (Masechet Yoma 87). During the "Viduy" recitation, one may not lean on a wall or piece of furniture in a manner such that he would fall if that object would be suddenly moved. While reciting the list of sins ("Ashamnu…"), one should bow slightly as an expression of humble submission. It is customary for both the Hazan and the congregation to recite "Viduy" in a whisper, rather than in a loud, audible voice. Even a person praying privately, who does not recite the Thirteen Attributes, recites "Ana" and the "Viduy." If a person who had already recited "Viduy" happens to be present in a synagogue when the congregation recites "Viduy," he is not required to join them, though it is proper for him to recite the words, "Hatati Aviti Pashati" while they recite "Viduy." One may recite "Viduy" during the nighttime hours, except on Mosa'eh Shabbat, until Hasot (midnight as defined by Halacha). In fact, according to Kabbalistic teaching, one should recite "Viduy" before he goes to sleep, along with his recitation of the bedtime Shema. The Kaf Ha'haim (Rabbi Yaakov Haim Sofer, Baghdad-Israel, 1870-1939) cites this custom (in 239:2) in the name of the Arizal. It is customary, however, not to recite "Viduy" with the bedtime Shema on a night following a day when Nefilat Apayim is omitted. Thus, for example, on the night following Shabbat, Rosh Hodesh or holidays, one should not recite "Viduy" with the bedtime Shema. The Ben Ish Hai mentions this Halacha in Parashat Ki Tisa (7). This discussion relates only to the recitation of "Viduy," and not to the Thirteen Attributes or Nefilat Apayim, which one should not recite at nighttime. Needless to say, "Viduy" should not be recited on Shabbat or holidays.

Every day, we read one ayah, analyse its Tajweed rules, explore its meaning, and reflect on its timeless lessons and wisdom. Plus, we're taking on the challenge of memorising one ayah a day. By the end of January, inshaAllah, we'll have the entire surah in our hearts, along with a deeper understanding of its message.Let's dive into ayah 17 today.Recitation of Ayah 17:أَمْ أَمِنتُم مَّن فِي ٱلسَّمَآءِ أَن يُرْسِلَ عَلَيْكُمْ حَاصِبًا فَسَتَعْلَمُونَ كَيْفَ نَذِيرٌthe Fatha of the Kaf and avoid making it sound like Kaif.Meaning and Reflection:Allah asks:“Or do you feel secure that the One above will not send a violent storm upon you? Then you will know how serious My warning was.”Building on Ayah 16:Yesterday, we reflected on how Allah controls the earth and could cause it to quake violently, swallowing us whole. Today, Allah shifts our attention upward—to the sky—and asks if we feel secure that He won't send down a storm of destruction.The word حَاصِبًا refers to a destructive wind carrying stones, debris, and fire. This type of wind was used as a punishment for past nations, such as the people of Lut and the army of the elephants in Surah Al-Fil.Lessons for Reflection:1. Allah's Absolute Control:Allah is not only the Creator but the Sustainer and Controller of everything in the heavens and earth. The forces of nature, which we often take for granted, are under His command. A gentle breeze could become a violent storm if He wills it.2. A Wake-Up Call:This ayah warns us not to become complacent. Do we really feel safe disobeying Allah? We may not face a literal storm, but Allah's warnings can come in various forms—illness, loss, or sudden calamities that remind us of our vulnerability.3. Signs from the Past:The people of Lut faced a similar punishment with a violent storm of brimstones. The army of the elephant in Surah Al-Fil was destroyed by tiny birds carrying stones. If Allah could do this to entire nations, are we exempt from His power?4. Gratitude and Accountability:Reflect on the blessings we enjoy every day. The same forces that could destroy us are the ones Allah uses to sustain us. The winds bring rain, the earth provides food, and the heavens protect us. With these blessings comes accountability.Challenge for Today:Take a moment to reflect on your surroundings. Ask yourself:• Do I sometimes feel “safe” in my disobedience?• How can I show gratitude to Allah for His mercy and control over my life?Let this ayah remind us that life is fragile and under Allah's command. Live each moment in obedience, so when the time comes to face Him, we can say we did our best to live as Muslims.That's it for Day 17. Stay consistent, reflect deeply, and keep striving. Onlar, kalplerin ve gözlerin dikilip kalacağı bir günden korkarlar.” (Nur 36-37) Müfessirler, ayette geçen “evler” den maksadın mescitler ve müminlerin evleri olduğunu söyler. (Maverdî, Şevkânî; İbn Aşur, ilgili ayetin tefsiri). Ebu Hayyan'a göre, ayetteki “evler” sözcüğü içinde namaz kılınan ve ilmî sohbetler yapılan bütün evler için geçerlidir. (Ebu Hayan, Alusî, ilgili ayetin tefsiri). İkrime'ye göre de bu evler, içinde iman meşalesi yanan bütün mescit ve evlerdir. Lambaların ışığında geceleri namaz kılınan ve ilmî sohbetler yapılan her yer buna dahildir. Diğer taraftan, Ayette “mescid” yerine “ev” sözcüğünün kullanılmış olması dikkat çekicidir. Bundan, “Biz de Musa'ya ve kardeşine ‘Kavminiz için Mısır'da evler edinin' diye vahyettik. Evlerinizi mescid haline getirin. Namazlarınızı dosdoğru kılın. Müjdele o müminleri.” (Yunus, 10/87) ayetindeki emrin gösterdiği hedefe uygun şekilde, müminlerin evlerinin içlerinde Allah'ın anıldığı ve sabah akşam Onu tesbih eden adamların bulunduğu birer mescide benzemesi gerektiği sonucunu çıkarmak daha uygundur. Bu da, ideal bir Müslüman aileye yakışan şeyin, sabah ve akşam vakitlerini Allah'ı anarak, Onu tesbih ederek, Onun kitabını okuyarak ve Onun rızasına ulaştıracak bilgileri kazanmaya çalışarak değerlendirmek olduğunu ve bunda başlıca sorumluluğun evin reisine düştüğünü gösterir. Yine dikkat çekicidir ki, âyet hayatın dışında bir model önermemekte, ticaret ve alışverişi devre dışı bırakmamaktadır. İbni Abbas'ın da dediği gibi, “Allah'ın nurunu kendilerine misal olarak verdiği bu kimseler, halk içinde en çok ticaretle uğraşan, en fazla alışveriş yapanlar da olabilir; ancak bu meşgaleler, Allah'ı anmaktan onları alıkoymaz.” (Müstedrek, 2:432, no. 3506.) “Onların durumları değişir ve böylece kalpleri, anlamaz bir halden anlar hale; gözleri görmez halden, görür hale gelirler. Dolayısıyla onlar, şüpheden zanna, zandan yakîne, yakînden de, muayene ve müşahedeye (bizzat görmeye) geçmişlerdir. Çünkü Hakk Teâlâ, "Onlar için Allah´tan, hiç beklemedikleri nice şeyler, zuhur edip gelecek” (ûnm, 47) ve "Andolsun ki sen (dünyada) bu hususta bir gaflette idin. İşte senden perdeni kaldırıp açtık" (Kaf, 22) buyurmuştur. Kalpler, yerlerinden oynar ve boğazlara dayanır; gözler de masmavi kesilir. Nitekim Dahhâk şöyle der: "Kâfirleri, gözleri keskin olarak hasredilirler, sonra gözleri kayar, derken kör olurlar. Kalpleri de korkudan, bir çıkış yolu bulamaz ve ancak gelip boğaza dayanır. Nitekim Allah Teâlâ, "O zaman yürekleri gamla dolu olarak, gırtlaklarının yanındadır" buyurmuştur.” Razi Hz. Ebü Hüreyre (radıyallâhu anh) anlatıyor: "Resülullah (aleyhissalâtu vesselâm) buyurdular ki: "Allah'ın, yollarda dolaşıp zikredenleri araştıran melekleri vardır. AIIahu Teâlayı zikreden bir cemaate rastlarlarsa, birbirlerini "Aradığınıza gelin!" diye çağırırlar. (Hepsi gelip) onları kanatlarıyla kuşatarak dünya semasına kadar arayı doldururlar. Allah, onları en iyi bilen olduğu halde meleklere sorar: "Kullarım ne diyorlar?" "Seni tesbih ediyorlar, sana tekbir okuyorlar, sana tahmid okuyorlar. Sana tazim (temcid) ediyorlar" derler. Rabb Teâla sormaya devam eder.
