Human Entities 2026: culture in the age of artificial intelligenceTenth editionTue, 2 June 2026, 6.30pmPermacomputing: small entrances to a wide collectiveAna MeiselWeb developer and artistPermacomputing applies permaculture, a design for Earth care, people care and fair share, to computing. It focuses on repair and inspects the all-encompassing impacts of technology through trails of ecology, conviviality and anti-capitalist politics. Communities dedicated to these ethics continue to form around the world and exercise it with art, mutual aid and practical guides to technological degrowth and maintainable systems. The aim is to impair dominant tech powers that funnel our emotions into data with seamlessly blunt interactions that coast us into a world of alienation filled with environmental harm. This momentous friction creates a new politicisation due to tech's ubiquity and polarisation. Permacomputing's idiosyncratic and minimal computing practices require slowness, thoughtfulness and communal knowledge sharing. This deepens relationships and sociability, and subsequently opens gateways to politics and class consciousness from ecofeminist, decolonial and communal foundations.Ana MeiselAna Meisel is a Polish-German web developer and artist based in London, UK. She is part of Superkilogirls, a collective that looks at feminist critiques of computing and automation, runs External Pages, an internet art gallery and co-organises London's Permacomputing Club. Everyone's Betting on AI...And They Just Might Be Wrong -"Computing Power Drives the Future: AI and the Next Big Thing" by William MeiselComputing power has long grown at an exponential rate. That rapid advance has allowed digital systems to do more each year. Computer power crossed a major threshold when it made "Artificial Intelligence" driven by deep neural networks economically feasible. And huge investments are being made in ever-larger computer centers to support AI. This book challenges the assumptions behind those huge investments and explains why the generative AI that is making all the news is over-rated.Computer power crossing a threshold allowed deep neural nets to be practical, and they have indeed been used effectively for many limited applications. Meisel discusses the "next big thing" that exponential growth in computer processing speed will allow. The book provides a realistic description of what we can expect as computer power grows ever more quickly than most past innovations, with major impacts on society, the economy, and competition between countries.William Meisel, PhD, was an early researcher in AI, with an PhD dissertation on neural networks and an early book on computer pattern recognition, the latter while a professor of EE and CS at USC. He then applied those techniques as the head of the computer science division of a defense company for a decade. He then founded and ran Speech Systems Incorporated, developing speech recognition technology and applications, for a decade. He then published Speech Recognition Update, a monthly paid-subscription, no-ads newsletter on commercial developments in speech recognition and natural language processing for more than twenty years and held conferences on the subject. He was also Executive Director of the non-profit Applied Voice Input Output Society during this period. He is currently an independent consultant and author. His recent books include Computing Power Drives the Future, The Lost History of Talking to Computers and Evolution Continues: A Human-Computer Partnership.AMAZONhttps://williammeisel.com/https://www.kingpagespress.com/http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/121825kpp2.mp3

Computing Power Drives the Future by William Meisel https://www.amazon.com/Computing-Drives-Future-William-Meisel/dp/1088244149 Computing power has long grown at an exponential rate. That rapid advance has allowed digital systems to do more each year. Computer power crossed a major threshold when it made "Artificial Intelligence" driven by deep neural networks economically feasible. And huge investments are being made in ever-larger computer centers to support AI. This book challenges the assumptions behind those huge investments and explains why the generative AI that is making all the news is over-rated. Computer power crossing a threshold allowed deep neural nets to be practical, and they have indeed been used effectively for many limited applications. Meisel discusses the "next big thing" that exponential growth in computer processing speed will allow. The book provides a realistic description of what we can expect as computer power grows ever more quickly than most past innovations, with major impacts on society, the economy, and competition between countries.

In this closing episode of the Merkavah Series, we explore Malchus as the culmination of all the Sefiros where everything we've built within ourselves is finally brought into relationship with another, creating something new that did not exist before. Rabbi Meisel shows how Dovid HaMelech embodies this quality by becoming the vessel through which Hashem's kingship is revealed in the world. Learning about Malchus teaches us that the deepest fulfillment comes when we empty ourselves to receive from Hashem and then channel that shefa outward into our marriages, our communities, our work by attuning to what others truly need.Join the Conversation! Be part of our growing community—join the Shema Podcast for the Perplexed WhatsApp group to share feedback, discuss episodes, and suggest future topics. Yesod becomes practical through action, bris milah as covenantal alignment, business and marriage as arenas to root values, and daily mitzvos as the pipeline that carries blessing into the world. We discuss why Moshe, the greatest of all leaders, is rooted in Netzach, how Netzach channels mind, heart, and action into lasting habits, and how it must be balanced with Hod's humility and gratitude. Through Moshe's role in bringing Torah into the world, we learn that true victory is not about conquest or success alone, but about transforming ourselves, elevating our struggles, and carrying Hashem's presence into every step of our lives.Join the Conversation! Be part of our growing community—join the Shema Podcast for the Perplexed WhatsApp group to share feedback, discuss episodes, and suggest future topics.
