Alexis Downie recaps the Anaheim Ducks Wednesday night game against the Minnesota Wild. Later, Downie is joined by Hockey Hall of Fame broadcaster Mike Emrick (3:39) to talk about his extraordinary 47-year career calling professional hockey games.
This week on the Next Shift Hockey Podcast we are joined by one of the most recognized faces and voices in the history of hockey, Doc Emrick. Doc Emrick retired in 2020 after a 47 year career broadcasting professional hockey. Doc worked the Stanley Cup Final 22 times, 45 Stanley Cup Playoffs/Final Game 7s, 6 Olympics, 14 NHL All-Star Games and 19 NHL Winter Classics and Stadium Series games, including the inaugural Winter Classic between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres. Emrick estimated he's called more than 3,750 professional and Olympic hockey games. Huge thank you to Doc Emrick for joining us this week!
Doc's broadcasting career began in 1973 when he became the radio play-by-play voice of the Port Huron Flags in the International Hockey League. For 50 years Doc called games with the same passion and excitement that he did when he called his first Flags game. His awards are too numerous to mention, Hockey Hall of Famer, Emmy winner. He sits down with John and Mark to share stories from his journey of becoming the Voice of Hockey.
He was the soundtrack of the NHL just like Marv Albert was for the NBA. Mike “Doc” Emrick spent nearly 50 years honing his craft but as the national voice of the NHL was revered for his unique approach which included a vocabulary the size of a dictionary. He once used 150 catch phrases to describe an Olympic game! And to think, this Indiana native used to attend hockey games at the Old Chicago stadium as a fan only years later to broadcast from its perch high above the ice surface. He's been retired since the end of the 2020 Stanley Cup Final but has an ice rink full of stories including the disappearing goal by Patrick Kane to win the Cup for the Blackhawks in 2010. He wished he had a do-over in that confusing goal but no one wishes a do-over for what was a spectacular and highly entertaining career.“Tell me a story I don't know” is proudly sponsored by Rahl Jewelers on Barrington road in Hoffman Estates where you come in as customer and leave as a friend. Mike “Doc” Emrick grew up in rural Indiana liking basketball like every other kid. He loved a lot of sports. In fact, he originally wanted to be a baseball broadcaster…until he went to his first hockey game in Fort Wayne. That began a lifetime pursuit of announcing hockey, locally, nationally and internationally. He's been the primary voice of hockey for every major sports network, and his ability to keep the viewer informed of all the action in the fast-paced sport better than anyone else in the business. Doc joins us to talk about the places and events he's seen in nearly 50 years behind the mic.
The NHL playoffs have begun, but without one of sports' greatest broadcasters. The wonderful MIKE "DOC" EMRICK retired last October. He joins me to discuss the latter stage of his career, like broadcasting during the pandemic and deciding to hang up his mic -- far more compelling to me than the thrilling games he called or the superb players he witnessed. He's as enjoyable to listen to on a podcast as on TV.

This week, Mike finishes a discussion he should have concluded last week, as he is now able to describe where the money in those massive transfer fees goes. With the end of Matchweek 5, it's also a perfect time for another installment of "Now What Did We F#@% Up?," so the guys reflect on some of their recent and shameful blunders on the show. Jared gives a recap of some of this week's more interesting (or, in the case of Tottenham Hotspur failing to beat West Ham, depressing) matches, and the guys wrap up with a shout-out to Mike "Doc" Emrick, the greatest play-by-play sportscaster in the most difficult sport to call (hockey), on his retirement.

Locked On Penguins - Daily Podcast On The Pittsburgh Penguins
Cody Ceci was of course signed over the weekend by the Pittsburgh Penguins and Hunter is here to break it all down as he's going to be the number six defenseman heading into the season. What is his ceiling for just a one year contract? Is there any part of his game that can actually improve at this stage of his career? Hunter goes over that, and also explains how he would be easier to bench if he plays bad as he's on just a one-year deal and barely even making above $1M for next season. After that, Hunter talks about the rumored new jersey that's coming to the Penguins next season and why they should just stick to the regular black diagonal Pittsburgh jerseys. Having them in white just wouldn't feel right, plus could the Robo Penguin make a return at some point. Finally, Hunter pays tribute to Mike "Doc" Emrick, who announced his broadcasting retirement earlier today. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Tonight, Game One of the 2020 World Series gets underway between the Dodgers and Rays. It’s a series that promises to be as strange and intriguing as the season it concludes. Will Clayton Kershaw exorcise his playoff demons and lead the Dodgers to their first title in three decades? Or will the aggressively unconventional Tampa Bay Rays upset LA to claim their first-ever championship? And with a neutral site location and limited fans in the seats, will it feel like a real World Series? Jeff Passan explains how LA and Tampa made it this far, and what the fall classic in a pandemic will look like. Then, an ode to hockey’s preeminent broadcasting scholar, Mike “Doc” Emrick, who announced his retirement on Monday.
