Noah Reed and Ryan Murray are two youth workers from Winnipeg, Manitoba who open up about how mentorship has shaped their preparation and fruitfulness in youth ministry. Both trace their ministry health and leadership development to intentional mentors throughout their lives—some formal, some unexpected.Listen in and learn about what mentorship looks like in practice, how to find a mentor (even if no one is offering), and why both practical ministry and spiritual mentorship matter. Whether you're a brand-new volunteer, a seasoned youth pastor, or somewhere in between, this conversation offers practical encouragement and guidance to help you grow in both your leadership and your walk with Jesus. And as Ryan reminds us, the best mentors don't just call out your weaknesses—they call out your strengths when you can't see them.Learn more about MCS-Horizon at mcs.edu/about/mcs-horizonHave a question or want to dig deeper? Many of the core technologies behind Generative AI are not exactly brand new. For example, the "Attention Is All You Need" paper, which described and introduced the Transformer model (the "T" in ChatGPT), was published in 2017. Diffusion models—the backbone of image generation tools like StableDiffusion and DALL-e—were introduced in 2015 and were originally inspired by thermodynamic modeling techniques. Generative adversarial networks (GANs) were introduced in 2014.However, Generative AI has seemingly taken the world by storm over the past couple years. In this episode, Graham and Jason discuss—in broad strokes—what Generative AI is, what's required to train and run foundation models, where the value lies, and frontier challenges.Fact-Checking And CorrectionsBefore we begin...At around 36:16 Jason said that the Pile was compiled by OpenAI or one of its research affiliates. This is not correct. The Pile was compiled by Eleuther.ai, and we couldn't find documentation suggesting that OpenAI incorporates the entirety of The Pile into its training data corpus. At 49:07 Jason mentions "The Open Source Institute" but actually meant to mention the Open Source InitiativeApplied Machine Learning 101Not all AI and applied machine learning models are created equally, and models can be designed to complete specific types of tasks. Broadly speaking, there are two types of applied machine learning models: Discriminative and Generative.Discriminative AIDefinition: Discriminative AI focuses on learning the boundary between different classes of data from a given set of training data. Unlike generative models that learn to generate data, discriminative models learn to differentiate between classes and make predictions or decisions based on the input data.Historical Background TLDR:The development of Discriminative AI has its roots in statistical and machine learning approaches aimed at classification tasks.Logistic regression and Support Vector Machines (SVMs) are early examples of discriminative models, which have been used for many years in various fields including computer vision and natural language processing.Over time, with the development of deep learning, discriminative models like Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) have become highly effective for a wide range of classification tasks.Pop Culture Example(s):"Hotdog vs. Not a Hotdog algorithm" from HBO's Silicon Valley (S4E4)Image recognition capabilities of something like Iron Man alter ego Tony Stark's JARVIS (2008)**Real-World Example(sAutomatic speech recognition (ASR)Spam and abuse detectionFacial recognition, such as Apple's Face ID and more Orwellian examples in places ranging from China to EnglandFurther Reading:Discriminative Model (Wikipedia)Generative AIDefinition: Generative AI refers to a type of artificial intelligence that is capable of generating new data samples that are similar to a given set of training data. This is achieved through algorithms that learn the underlying patterns, structures, and distributions inherent in the training data, and can generate novel data points with similar properties.Historical Background TLDR:The origins of Generative AI can be traced back to the development of generative models, with early instances including probabilistic graphical models in the early 2000s.However, the field truly began to gain traction with the advent of Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) b y Ian Goodfellow and his colleagues in 2014.Since then, various generative models like Variational Autoencoders (VAEs) and others have also gained prominence, contributing to the rapid advancement of Generative AI.Pop Culture Example:The AI from the movie Her (2013)Real-World Example(s):OpenAI's GPT family, alongside image models like StableDiffusion, and Midjourney.Further Reading:Deepgram's Generative AI page in the AI Glossary... co-written by Jason and GPT-4.Large Language Model in the Deepgram AI Glossary... also co-written by Jason and GPT-4.The Physics Principle That Inspired Modern AI Art (Anil Ananthaswamy, for Quanta Magazine)Visualizing and Explaining Transformer Models From the Ground Up (Zian "Andy" Wang for the Deepgram blog, January 2023)Transformer Explained hub on PapersWithCodeTransformers, Explained: Understand the Model Behind GPT-3, BERT, and T5 (Dale Markowitz on his blog, Dale on AI., May 2021)Further Reading By TopicIn rough order of when these topics were mentioned in the episode...Economic/Industry Impacts of AIHow Large Language Models Will Transform Science, Society, and AI (Alex Tamkin and Deep Ganguli for Stanford HAI's blog, February 2021)The Economic Potential of Generative AI: The Next Productivity Frontier ( McKinsey & Co., June 2023)Generative AI Could Raise Global GDP by 7% (Goldman Sachs, April 2023)Generative AI Promises an Economic Revolution. Head over to the Oilersnation YouTube channel and leave your freezing cold take in the live chat. The guys have two player grades to take care of today, with one of them being much quicker than the other. Coming up first is Ryan Murray after playing 13 games for the Oilers throughout the regular season. Injuries plagued his time in Edmonton preventing him from truly showcasing what he could have brought to the team. The other player being graded is Leon Draisaitl. Draisaitl had a monster season for the Oilers in the regular season and playoffs, which means grading him should not be a tough task. Frank Seravalli from Daily Faceoff released his top five likely buyout candidates, and one player on that list was Anthony Manatha from the Detroit Red Wings. Instead of buying him out, the trade machine found an alternative option that could work nicely for both teams. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Life – the condition that distinguishes animals and plants from inorganic matter, including the capacity for growth, reproduction, functional activity, and continual change preceding deathMany men have thought about hiring a personal trainer or a coach to dial in their nutrition or step it up in the gym. However, the benefits of hiring a coach go well beyond the gym and the kitchen.Simply making the effort to go to the gym or eat well isn't hard. However, executing on that requires resiliency and consistent execution. It requires diving into your psyche and making changes. While we may think we can do this on our own, we often need someone to help us get the ball rolling. In this episode of Untaming Masculinity, Dan and Brad are joined by their friend Ryan Murray. Ryan is an online fitness and nutrition coach who owns Uplift Coaching, which started in 2021. In this wide-ranging conversation, Ryan talks about how he transformed himself from a man struggling with depression and anxiety to one who created a business to improve the lives of others.Ryan discusses the concept that when a man goes to the gym, he sets out to pick up heavy stuff and put it down repeatedly. With that, you turn your mind off but think about everything simultaneously, and the results are freeing. As you do the things that most men are not doing today, you will find yourself.Other topics discussed include:Why a man must make his health a priorityHow life is a series of failures, we learn fromThe concept that life happens in the middleFollow Untaming Masculinity on your favorite podcast app, YouTube, and Instagram.Contact RyanInstagramFacebook – Uplift CoachingSubscribe and ShareSubscribe to our YouTube channelConnect with Dan on Instagram and TwitterConnect with Brad on Instagram and TwitterFollow Untaming Masculinity on Instagram and TwitterJoin the Untaming Masculinity Facebook GroupPlease leave us a rating and review

It's Friday afternoon leading into the long weekend and that means the boys are back with a fresh episode of Oilersnation Radio to help you grind through what's left of your week. On today's show, we talked about Ryan Murray signing a one-year contract, Sam Gagner signing in Winnipeg, and a whole lot more.To kick off this week's podcast, we got started with a random conversation about the grocery store that probably went on for way too long. Getting back to business, we broke down the Ryan Murray signing that happened shortly before the podcast kicked off and whether or not it was a smart move to bring in the former Avs defender on a league-minimum deal. What we all liked about the move was the added depth on the back end, but what we don't know is how much he'll be able to contribute. From there, we looked at the news that Sam Gagner signed in Winnipeg after weeks of rumours that he was destined to come back to Edmonton for a third kick at the can. From there, we played a little game about when Ryan McLeod would sign a new contract and I challenged the boys to come up with a specific contract and signing date. Whoever gets closest will win a shirsey from me! Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. Visit acast.com/privacy for more information.

With news breaking this afternoon that the Oilers had signed Ryan Murray to a one-year contract and that Sam Gagner had signed in Winnipeg, I figured I may as well settle into my home studio and bang out a quick reaction episode of the podcast. For the last few weeks, we've been hearing all about Sam Gagner coming back to Edmonton for a third tour of duty on either a PTO on a league-minimum contract. Well, as it turns out, neither of those things happened as the 33-year-old veteran was eventually snapped up by the Winnipeg Jets. Shortly after that news broke, however, the Oilers had their own announcement to make as it was revealed that they had signed the left-handed defender to a one-year contract. Was Gagner signing in Winnipeg a domino that fell or was the timing of these two signings purely coincidental? I dove into it all on this quick reaction episode of Better Lait Than Never.
