Mike Flanagan's "Midnight Mass" revisits a lot of the themes of much of his previous work: grief, death, trauma, loss (and you can listen to our discussion of his "Haunting Of" Netflix series here). But it also covers some a lot of new ground, including the complicated relationship between human beings and the religions they build. It is a show grounded as much in humanity as it is in horror, and it asks more questions than it answers - and, in this way, it demonstrates an understanding of what religion is and how it works that is rare not only for the genre but for popular fiction in general. John has been unable to stop thinking about the series since it debuted three weeks ago, and so, desperate to talk about it, he invited the two most qualified voices on the subjects of horror and religion he knows - Kelly J. Baker and Dan Colón, co-host and co-creator of Cage Club's The Monsters that Made Us. Dan on Twitter Show page: The Monsters That Made Us
Diana and Mike are joined by Bernadette Gorman-White to chat about Mike Flanagan's Midnight Mass. Along the way, they chat about religion, banger church music, the amazing cast of the series and the excitement leading up to the release of The Fall of the House of Usher. Odds and Ends: Short a person or two, but not short of intro topics, we cover a lot of ground this week, including creating a Twitter account for Minecraft vs. John Mayer; finally delving into the Great British Bake Off and the Mighty Boosh; more Wes Craven talk via the Scream series; T.J. finishes up Mike Flanagan's Midnight Mass; Moose is watching You, not you, but You. Feature Film: This week, three white guys solve racism by talking about Jordan Peele's directorial debut, Get Out. We cover all the important societal issues brought up in the movie, such as: the ethics of eating cereal components separately, how auctions work, how short bangs can fit in a ponytail, and that's it, nothing else controversial to talk about here. 1948's Brighton Rock, based on the novel by Graham Greene, was a controversial hit in England where critics felt it reached new levels of depravity and on screen violence. It also met the ire of novelist Greene himself, who was denied the opportunity to adapt his own book - that task fell to playwright Terrence Rattigan - and given zero influence in casting decisions. Greene was vocal about his dislike of Richard Attenborough in the lead role of Pinkie Brown and Hermione Baddeley as crusader Ida Arnold. After seeing the completed film, however, he relented and agreed both actors were well cast. Dan and Vicky take a look at this classic, much heralded British crime noir along with recently seen films and tv shows including Mike Flanagan's Midnight Mass, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, The Green Knight, No Time to Die, and Hulu comedy series Pen15. Miranda July spends more time as a performance artist than as a filmmaker, so it makes sense that her second film, The Future, feels a bit like a performance piece. That also likely speaks to why its quirky charm works for some but for others, they feel it represents the worst side of independent film. But that's what art is, right? Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we continue our 10th Anniversary celebration series with July's 2011 film The Future. Miranda July and Hamish Linklater are a perfect couple in The Future. Linklater's recently appeared on Mike Flanagan's Midnight Mass on Netflix and was amazing in that role, so it's great to jump back 10 years to see him in this film. He and July, playing his girlfriend, are the perfect 30-something couple, happy with their existence but unsure how to move things forward. That's when the cat Paw-Paw enters their lives, and suddenly, they feel like their lives are coming to an end. From there, it's a bit of an existential journey with each character – Linklater as Jason and July as Sophie – working through their own interpretation of the future and their position in life. But where do we land on the film as a whole versus the various parts? There's also Paw-Paw the cat and the Moon as well. The first half focuses on their relationship. The second half focuses on them struggling with where they think their lives might lead. But there's also Paw-Paw the cat, talking to us in metaphors about life and the death. At the same time, we also have the Moon, talking to Jason while he's frozen time and is struggling about whether to unfreeze it or not. The Future is a unique film that works for us, but likely won't work for everyone. July gives us a lot to discuss with this quirky, unique film. Not everyone will like it – we even are a bit split on it – but it's clearly a film from a unique voice and certainly worth watching and revisiting. Check it out then tune in.
