If you're a Tasmanian, you're probably familiar with today's guest. Mitch McPherson is the founder of Speak Up! Stay ChatTY, a mental health awareness organisation inspired by the loss of his younger brother Ty to suicide in 2013. Since then, the organisation has delivered programs into workplaces, community groups, schools and sporting clubs to encourage people to speak up about mental health and create a kinder and more accepting world. In today's conversation, TICT's Luke Martin asks Mitch to share his advice with the Tasmanian tourism and hospitality industry, which has arguably been one of the hardest hit by the last two years' Covid-related challenges. While we're encouraged by the most recent Tourism Industry Business Sentiment Survey, which showed that 95% of respondents had a positive outlook for the future of the industry, it's undeniable that the last two years have had real impact on the industry's collective mental health. Mitch talks through practical self-care strategies to build resilience and avoid negative cycles, as well as the importance of looking out for others around us who might be doing it tough. For leaders and managers, Mitch offers his tips on building workplace cultures that are engaged with and proactive around mental health strategies. He believes that these cultures need to be set from the top, and can have real impact on individuals and teams. And with June 21 – the shortest day of the year – coming up, Mitch gets chatty about Shorts Day. It's a new awareness initiative that encourages us to wear shorts to work on what might be one of the chilliest days to brave the cold and brave the conversation around mental health. Mitch McPherson’s entire world was upended when at the beginning of 2013, his 18 year old brother Ty took his own life.Immersed in grief, he decided the least he could do was try and keep Ty’s name alive, so, he traced a simple drawing of a pair of shorts, as his little brother was always dressed in footy shorts, along with the words speak up, stay chatty with the TY at the end of 'chatty' capitalised.Mitch had no idea this simple sketch would be the catalyst for the creation of one of the most acclaimed suicide prevention and mental health promotion programs in the country. This is an incredible story of vulnerability, strength and the undying love of one man for his little brother, a young life gone far too soon. More than 3000 Australians take their life every year, 75% of those male. Heartbreakingly, suicide is the leading cause of death for people aged between 15 and 44, that's why movements like Stay Chatty are so vitally important. Mitch's work has saved lives. In this chat, Mitch and I discuss: his new role as a father to his beautiful little daughter, the impact losing his brother has had on how he'll raise her, how we should be raising young men in today's world by teaching them to be vulnerable, Speak Up Stay Chatty's humble beginnings and how it's grown to what it is today.A trigger warning - this conversation addresses suicide. Mitch McPherson founded 'Speak Up Stay ChatTY after he tragically lost his brother, Ty, to suicide in 2013. Tina talks to Mitch about what he has been through, why talking about suicide and ‘speaking up’ is so important and how we can all keep an eye on each other, and most importantly, speak to each other and recognise the warning signs. This is an emotional yet powerful episode on the importance of talking about and creating more awareness around suicide prevention and mental health.Stay ChatTY Organisation: https://staychatty.com.au/
Sadly, many of us have been touched deeply by the sensitive topic of suicide. It's becoming more and more common to know of someone in our immediate circle, who has lost a loved one to suicide. Today we are talking with Mitch, who is making a huge difference right here in Australia, in raising awareness for mental health. Making a huge difference in the community in preventing suicide rates While Mitch admits it's difficult to gauge the difference that he's making in the community, and how many lives he's truly impacting, he knows his strong message is serving well. He is constantly receiving messages of gratitude from his talks in school, and even being stopped in the street by parents acknowledging the amazing work that he's doing. From all the positive feedback, he knows that his talks have allowed children to open up about issues, that they may not have otherwise brought up with their parents. Talk about powerful stuff! It's all the feedback that keeps Mitch's fire alive, and helps him to jump out in the bed in the morning, even though it's tough some days for him to talk about. He sees his personal experience as having the ability to change lives for the better. Mitch just wants everyone to know that if you've been touched by suicide, that it's never anybody's fault. In the end, it's the decision of the person that takes their life. All we can do is contribute along the way in a positive and influential manner. The more we can break down barriers, share, laugh and have fun together, the less suicides we will see.
