Oceanpaddler founder Dean Gardiner is regarded by his peers as the best Australian downwind paddler of our time, his reputation founded on countless victories internationally at the world-renowned Molokai Challenge, at the ICF World Cup, world regattas and countless races in Australia.A nine-time Molokai World Champion, Dean's first Molokai was in 1989, and since then he has raced almost every one of the 53 km Hawaiian enduros. The most revered ocean ski race in the world, paddlers are faced with an ocean crossing, traversing the Kaiwi Channel from Molokai island to Oahu. So dominant was Dean, that the race record that was set in 1994 – and he bettered in 1998 – held strong for 24 years, only broken in 2018 by his good friend and fellow Fenn paddler, Cory Hill.Perth born and bred, Dean was the founder of the iconic Doctor race, a 27 km downwind race from Rottnest Island to Perth. He staged his first Doctor in 2001, won it in 2022, and has built it over the last two decades to the legendary event it is today. In 2002, Dean introduced ocean paddling to Australia through the introduction of Fenn skis to our shores, and the development of the first ocean racing series. Two decades of hard work and financial risk by Dean, has seen the sport flourish in Australia and now Oceanpaddler organises the Shaw and Partners Australian Ocean Racing Series, a 16-race championship across five Australian states.Dean's a pioneer of ocean ski racing, and along with a handful of passionate paddlers from around the globe, is largely responsible for the popularity of the sport today.________________Sponsor DiscountsUse the code 'HAYDEN10' for 10% Off VPA Australia SupplementsDiscount also available at: www.vpa.com.au/HAYDEN10________________Follow us on social media!Instagram: @normlesspodcast YouTube: www.youtube.com/@normlessFacebook: www.facebook.com/normlesspodcast/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/norm...TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@normlesspodcastWebsite: normlesspodcast.simplecast.com________________Hayden Kelly, ESSAM, AES, AEP, MHPSHost of the NORMLESS podcastConnect with me on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn Website: www.haydenkelly.com.au________________Want to support the show? The best way to show your support is by providing a review on the Apple Podcast app, Spotify or via our facebook page. You can also stay in the loop with the latest podcast updates, news and information by subscribing to our mailing list.
Dean Summers grew up in the working-class suburb of Palmyra close to the port and beaches of Fremantle, Western Australia. As a kid, he, his two brothers, and sister swam competitively in the Fremantle Swimming club. He claims to have spent more time at the beach than at school. At 16 Dean joined the merchant navy (which he refers to as the family business) and sailed out of Fremantle on his first ship, the MV Boogalla. The main focus at sea, he jokes, is to stay out of the water. He effectively didn't swim seriously for the next 37 years.Dean is a former elected official of the Seamen's Union of Australia later to become the Maritime Union of Australia, MUA. In 2000 Dean became the Australian National Coordinator of the International Transport Workers Federation and moved to Sydney. The ITF represents and defends the world's 1.3 million seafarers. In 2013 Dean joined Vlad, a Sydney coach with a dedicated following of long-distance swimmers, and began his journey in the demanding international sport of open water marathon swimming. Vlad now boasts the largest stable of Australian long-distance and channel swimmers. After two years of training alongside some of the best long-distance swimmers in Australia, Dean swam the English Channel. In the next 12 months, he went on to claim the Catalina Channel and to circumnavigate Manhattan Island in New York. This is known as the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming. Dean became the 137th person to achieve it.Dean is an accomplished Oceans Seven swimmer, a near-impossible series of seven international swims which test the bravery, strength, determination, and resilience of anyone who comes close to it. Dean has six of the seven – English, Catalina, North, and Moloka'i Channel, the Strait of Gibraltar as well as the Cook Strait. The remaining one, the Tsugaru Strait, has been removed from the international swim calendar. After his Newcastle to Sydney swim, he now holds the record for the longest Australian ocean swim of 95.6km.Dean resigned from all work commitments early in 2021 and continues to train and mentor others in the sport of ocean swimming.________________Sponsor DiscountsUse the code 'HAYDEN10' for 10% Off VPA Australia SupplementsDiscount also available at: www.vpa.com.au/HAYDEN10________________Follow us on social media!Instagram: @normlesspodcast YouTube: www.youtube.com/@normlessFacebook: www.facebook.com/normlesspodcast/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/norm...TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@normlesspodcastWebsite: normlesspodcast.simplecast.com________________Hayden Kelly, ESSAM, AES, AEP, MHPSHost of the NORMLESS podcastConnect with me on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn Website: www.haydenkelly.com.au________________Want to support the show? The best way to show your support is by providing a review on the Apple Podcast app, Spotify or via our facebook page. You can also stay in the loop with the latest podcast updates, news and information by subscribing to our mailing list.

Growing up in Western Sydney Russell Manser was committed by the Children's Court Magistrate to the adult Long Bay Jail, despite having just turned 17 years old. A career criminal stealing cars by the age of 14, and a notorious Sydney bank robber throughout the 90's. Russell robbed 5 banks, including a $90,000 hit on Lane Cove's Commonwealth Bank Sydney. At this time he would have been able to purchase a home in Mount Druitt for $25,000. However, it all came crashing down at the age of 23, where he was handed a 15 year jail sentence. Throughout his time in prison Manser housed with some of the state's worst sex offenders, resulting in him being sexually abused repeatedly. His eventual heroin dependence also started there, after his abusers injected him several times with the drug.Prior to this, Russell had already been struggling to cope with the trauma and anger of having been sexually abused in Daruk, the notorious juvenile detention centre.Realising the healing impact of speaking up about the abuse, he found the courage to talk about his experiences with other prisoners, many of whom had experienced similar abuses.Russell encouraged and supported others to tell their stories, and to seek justice; and after being released from jail, he continued this work, which was the beginning of The Voice of a Survivor.'The Voice' helped over 6,500 people tell their stories and begin the process for justice and healing. He completed rehabilitation, gained admission to university, and now shares his experiences on podcasts, radio, and in other media interviews. He is also involved in the Australian boxing community at a local and national level, through coaching and sponsorship.________________Follow us on social media!Instagram: @normlesspodcast YouTube: www.youtube.com/@normlessFacebook: www.facebook.com/normlesspodcast/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/norm...TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@normlesspodcastWebsite: normlesspodcast.simplecast.com________________Hayden Kelly, ESSAM, AES, AEP, MHPSHost of the NORMLESS podcastConnect with me on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn ________________Want to support the show? The best way to show your support is by providing a review on the Apple Podcast app, Spotify or via our facebook page. You can also stay in the loop with the latest podcast updates, news and information by subscribing to our mailing list.
Helping prisoners crack the code of reading, speech pathologist Rosalie Martin has developed a unique approach to literacy. For three years, Rosie has visited Tasmania's Risdon Prison as a volunteer to deliver Just Sentences, a pilot project that is achieving astounding results. With specialist knowledge in the acquisition of language, and in the processing and production of speech sounds, Rosie is able to uncover hidden literacy problems and tackle them head on. As a result, many of the people in her program have learned to read in a matter of months, and Rosie is showing how many lives, currently on hold in prison, could be transformed. The founding speech pathologist of Chatter Matters Tasmania – a charity building awareness and skill in human communication – Rosie also runs her own private practice specialising in services for children with autism spectrum disorder. With patience and persistence, Rosie is helping others to open new doors and explore new worlds.________________ReferencesDOI: 10.1080/17549507.2017.1297484 - Snow et al. (2018). After trialling magic mushrooms in Thailand for the first time at the age of 20, Andrew Hamilton was hooked. For many years Andrew had a monopoly on the sale of magic mushrooms across Sydney, selling the drug in capsule form was a hit amongst festival and partygoers.Slowly becoming overweight, with an increasing addiction for cocaine and gambling. Andrew was arrested on Friday the 4th of June in 2021 for the commercial supply of psychedelic drugs and sentenced to four months prison in two of Sydney's maximum-security correctional centres.During his time in jail, Andrew began noticing the transformative power of laughter. Upon his release, Andrew took up stand-up comedy, initially under strict bail conditions where his parents had to come with him to his initial shows, and he had to be home in time for curfew.Since then, Andrew has become a regular in Sydney comedy clubs, recently completing sold out shows at Sydney Comedy Festival, and Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Joe Kwon grew up in a community of violence and with no father figure he naturally gravitated towards the support of local street gangs. At the age of 21 Joe was sentenced to 13 years in prison for directing a criminal enterprise. During his time in prison, he met a billionaire who was serving time for Australia's largest tax fraud who ended up becoming his first positive mentor who challenged his perceptions and attitudinal outlook on life. Joe learnt about business and the value of education, but most importantly his mentor taught him about self-worth from a prison cell. Through the support of his mentor Joe was able to complete his HSC while in prison and later was accepted and graduated from UNSW. From directing a criminal enterprise, today Joe is the Founder and CEO of a social enterprise (Confit) and a NFP (Confit Pathways) where he mentors that sense of self worth to incarcerated youth to thrive in society by providing pathways to employment, education and wrap-around support in the community. Confit Pathways also has a partnership with UNSW providing full scholarships with campus accomodation to young people who go through the Confit Pathways program. Joe's mission is to help reduce recidivism in Australia and create employment and education opportunities for individuals coming out of custody by breaking down societies preconceived notions of inmate stereotypes and providing community support through mentors with lived prison experience.Joe used fitness as a way to escape the revolving door of recidivism and is now about to open a social enterprise gym to help others that are affected by the justice system to do the same. Joe is known to be a catalyst and social impact innovator, using lived experience to create a platform to bridge the social gap between former inmates and the wider society through fitness. A 2022 Westpac Social Fellow and a 2022 Snow entrepreneur Joe is helping people from all walks of life train to be free.Andrew Truong is an integral member of the Confit team. From the challenges of growing up in a hardworking Vietnamese immigrant family to the tumultuous turns of a youth spent amongst the wrong crowd, Andrew had experienced it all. A two-time convict, it was during his last stint in jail that he discovered the transformative power of fitness. Drawing parallels between gruelling workouts and life's hardships, he emerged with a newfound philosophy: face challenges head-on, persevere and always keep pushing forward. Today, Andrew mentors youth, harnessing the power of fitness to reduce recidivism and provide them with a renewed sense of purpose.________________ReferencesPMID26086423 - Fazel & Wolf (2015). Drew Harrisberg is an Exercise Physiologist, Sports Scientist and holds a Graduate Certificate in Diabetes Education and Management. – But most importantly Drew is a healthy and happy guy thriving with type 1 diabetes. At the age of 22 Drew was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. After an incredibly frightening introduction to his journey with the autoimmune condition, Drew has championed diabetes within his life as a window into the remarkable impacts of regular exercise an good nutrition. Not only from a personal perspective, but also in terms of his education and how he can add value to the lives of others living with diabetes. As an ambassador for Diabetes Australia, Drew is remarkably optimistic and positive about what his diagnosis means to him. Believing that he is now healthier, and will likely be free of other health complications that he would have faced without the day-to-day, hour-to-hour insight that diabetes has provided him.Research from Stanford University in 2014 found that People living with diabetes make an extra 180 health related decisions each and every day..to put that in perspective it's about one additional decision every 5 minutes, or an extra 12 decisions every waking hour related to considerations like alerts from insulin pumps or CGM devices, blood glucose checks, insulin adjustments and carbohydrate intake. It is no surprise that 1 in 5 people living with the condition experience anxiety or depression.Subsequently drew has since made it his mission to control his health through positive changes to the way he thinks, eats, moves and lives his life.Any information or anecdotes related to diet or pharmaceutical management of diabetes discussed within this episode should be taken more broadly in nature. If you or someone you know is living with diabetes, please encourage them to consult with a Accredited Practicing Dietitian (APD) and Credentialled Diabetes Educator (CDE) before embarking on a major insulin or dietary adjustments. ________________ReferencesPMID31211392 - Toghi-Eshghi et al. A true tale of redemption. Simon Fenech's story is extraordinary. Simon Fenech was employed by fruit 2 work shortly after his release from prison in 2016 as a delivery driver and in the past 7 years has been promoted to general manager. Fruit 2 work is a social enterprise, a non-for profit organisation that helps provide those like Simon who have been impacted by the justice system with opportunities to rehabilitate through regular earnings and opportunities to learn and develop as humans. Ben and Jay both originated in the UK, but have found themselves on the Australian shores for the past 6 years. Having both played competitive rugby growing up, they have continued their passion for physical activity throughout their adulthood, engaging in bodybuilding, powerlifting, weightlifting and a raft of other activities.January 2020 was a dark time for most of the globe with Covid-19 talking hold, travel was becoming more and more difficult, and the impending ‘lockdown' looked inevitable. It was in these circumstances that Boomerang Loop Australia was born. Both Ben and Jay have found inspiration from people performing incredible feats. Whether that means climbing 14 mountain peaks in 7 months, or Cycling the pan American highway in under 100 days. It was this inspiration that made them look to the biggest possible challenge that they could do within the foreseeable restrictions. This was cycling, 14,251km around Australia! It was known at the inception that doing this challenge would be difficult from a physical point of view, however it became very clear from the outset of the training that this was far more of a psychological battle, rather than a physical one. With Jay having struggled with his own personal mental health and Ben having witnessed the impact of mental health difficulties upon his loved ones, the connection to how this challenge could positively impact mental health more broadly became obvious. Keeping this at the forefront of their minds, Boomerang Loop Australia made contact with Mindful Australia to dedicate any of the challenge donations to support their incredible work within the community. ‘People go about their day to day struggling with their own personal mental health battles. What we did was nothing in comparison to what many are going through.' This lap of Australia is tested the boys like nothing else. It required immense physical capability, character and a steely resilience to succeed in their journey. To learn more or donate, visit: www.boomerangloopau.com.au/ To learn more about the work of Mindful Australia, visit: www.mindfullaus.org/ Black Dog Institute, visit: www.blackdoginstitute.org.au/Lifeline, visit: www.lifelinedirect.org.auDavid Goggins cookie jar analogy: www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEg1SG1TOr4Follow @boomerangloopau on instagram and facebook________________Follow us on social media!Instagram: @normlesspodcast YouTube: www.youtube.com/@normlessFacebook: www.facebook.com/normlesspodcast/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/norm...TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@normlesspodcastWebsite: normlesspodcast.simplecast.com________________Hayden Kelly, ESSAM, AES, AEP, MHPSHost of the NORMLESS podcastConnect with me on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn ________________Want to support the show? The best way to show your support is by providing a review on the Apple Podcast app, Spotify or via our facebook page. You can also stay in the loop with the latest podcast updates, news and information by subscribing to our mailing list.

Late in September 2020, Evatac director Drew Schull was spending $30,000 AUD per day in facebook, google and youtube advertisements and making $110,000 daily through the sale of tactical apparel, bags, backpacks, knives and firearms. Drew held supremely high hopes of continuing to build the brand, however didn't have the adequate stock available. Subsequently, he ordered $2.8 million worth of inventory including $1 million USD worth of knives, and $1 million USD worth of backpacks. At this stage Drew had quarter of a million dollar days in mind, Lamborghini's, private jets and a luxurious lifestyle to say the least! However, then it happened. Just prior to the stock arriving in the united states the Apple IOS 14 update was released and apps were forced to ask users for permission to track their data. The majority opted out of being tracked and subsequently meant their business lost out large sums of money virtually overnight with youtube advertisements alone and stuck with $2.8 million worth of stock sitting in the warehouse unable to be moved.Whilst struggling for the next year during a world gripped by the COVID-19 pandemic, Evatac managed to find their feet. After landing a big affiliate thanks to the help of Dyllon and the team they managed to move some stock and ran some profitable advertising campaigns. This came only years after not having access to many platforms due to their Shopify store being completely blacklisted in Australia for selling knives and firearms when transitioning their business from the USA to Australia. This is a story of persistence and true grit and determination. Against all odds and after countless, sleepless nights Drew and Dyl have been able to build Evatac into what it is today. Dyllon has played an important role in upholding the integrity of the organisation through athlete management and affiliate relationships, whilst Evatac continues to make charitable contributions to Wounded Heroes organisation supporting Australian servicemen and women. ________The new Evatac elite duffel bag launch is scheduled for March 3rd, 2023. In early 2018, Ben Woods completed a 20,000km, 193-day journey around Australia on a bicycle, and in doing so, broke the Guinness World record for the furthest distance travelled on a bicycle in one country. He set out to complete this feat of endurance not for this record, but for his late brother Jase, who unfortunately lost his battle with depression. The aim of Ben's journey around Australia was to start a conversation about mental health whilst passing through every state and territory. He spoke to thousands of adolescents and adults — sharing stories, inspiring many and creating a community of love, understanding and kindness. Ben and the Ride for Jase organisation managed to raise over $386,217 during the course of the ride and after it, with money (given to the Blackdog Institute) put towards suicide prevention programs and mental health education in schools and community-based settings with the aim of decreasing suicide rates.__________If you want to learn more about the Ride for Jase organisation, or to donate, head to www.rideforjase.org.
