JHQ Podcast is a conversational/topical podcast, with a diversity of guests diving into all things health, wellness, and life's experiences without taking it too seriously along the way.
I'm excited to introduce a man who has been extremely influential to me personally over a ten year journey. Michael Street is a psychologist with an unconventional approach to therapy. He has personally been across the highs, the lows and any big decision that has essentially been made in my career and personal life. In this podcast interview we cover some of the stand out lessons and take aways from the hours of conversation we have engaged in. The dynamic in itself was unique given our meetings have always been private and generally orientated around me which would not have been appropriate for this public forum so instead, I tried to steer its course to provide value and insights for anyone considering seeking out a professional psychologist to help navigate life's complexities. Michael believes that coaching, counselling or psychotherapy needs to be tailored to each individual. This has led him to gain skills in a number of different approaches over his twenty years in practice. Michael came to study psychology as a mature age student, completing his studies part-time in Melbourne at Swinburne and Victoria University during the '80s and '90s. He believes that coaching, counselling or psychotherapy needs to be tailored to each individual. This has led him to develop skills in a number of different approaches over his twenty years in practice. Growing up in a Victorian country town in the middle of the twentieth century, he experienced both the State and Catholic school systems before serving as an officer in the Royal Australian Navy during the Vietnam era. He has worked in manufacturing, in sales, in retail as a business proprietor, in academia, HR, business administration, and has also spent many years on-site as a construction worker. This wide experience, combined with his light-hearted and often direct manner, has given him the ability to communicate with people of all ages and at all levels. Although Michael sees equal numbers of men and women, he specialises in men, couples and communication between individuals. He is divorced with two grown-up children. As a psychologist based in Carlton, Michael provides a range of services to clients from across the northern suburbs of Melbourne including psychotherapy, marriage and couples counselling, life coaching, general counselling services and more. NEW PODCAST SEASON - UNWIRED In this new first episode, I'm sharing the exciting evolution of my career in health and fitness - from managing my baby, Jungle HQ in Melbourne to embracing new horizons with the opening of a revolutionary gym in the serene Noosa, on Queensland's Sunshine Coast. However, as my business ventures grow I have other responsibilities that impact my ability to coach to the standards I hold myself to. Therefore, it's a current pause in the coaching department to focus on on these projects and enjoy some up and coming future memories in my personal life. This hiatus gives me an opportunity to take inspiration and new knowledge to come back with an elevated product and service offering to the coaching space in the later half of the year. "Unwired" is something I've put off doing for a while now, perhaps due to the vulnerable nature of not having a guest or co-host to engage in conversation with. None the less my mission is to connect with you guys as my subscribers to better learn how I can return value and support you in your journey to becoming healthy and excel with your body and in life. Give me your feedback, ask me some questions, hit me with a topic of interest! Until then... In this episode, we had the pleasure of hosting Holly Sinclair, an expert in women's health and fertility from the Women's Series. Holly shared with us the exciting launch of her fertility summit, which opened the gateway to a compelling discussion about fertility and its challenges in today's world. Our conversation went beyond the conventional understanding of fertility, addressing the complexities faced by couples trying to conceive. We explored fertility not just from a female perspective but also shed light on the impact on men. Surprisingly, declining sperm motility and testosterone levels have made this issue increasingly common. The discussion naturally led us to explore a related and concerning topic - the growing prevalence of people experimenting with steroids and performance-enhancing drugs (PED's). Together, we discussed the lesser-known short and long-term consequences associated with such decisions, emphasizing the importance of informed choices. Moreover, we took a deep dive into personal experiences, as your host (Jack) revealed his journey of spending the last 12+ months sober. This candid exploration of self-growth resonates with many who might be on similar paths of personal development. In the latter part of the podcast, we tackled the notion of trauma as a buzzword and explored how it can sometimes be used as an excuse for hindering personal growth. Our unfiltered conversation between Jack and Holly ventured into controversial territories, as we fearlessly explored the boundaries of thought and behaviour. Join us on "Living Rewired" as we uncover meaningful insights and challenge conventional wisdom on a wide array of topics, empowering you to embrace change and growth. Your Host: Jack Boon (Founder of Living Rewired / Health & Performance Coach) Co-Host: Mikael Yahaya (Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) Guests: Lachlan Giles (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt & Coach) Welcome to another exciting episode of our podcast! In this edition, we had the pleasure of hosting a very special guest, Lachlan Giles. Lachlan is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and coach hailing from Melbourne, Australia, where he competes out of his renowned gym, Absolute MMA, located in St Kilda. Lachlan's impressive resume speaks for itself. He achieved the remarkable feat of securing the ADCC bronze medal at the Submission Grappling World Championships in 2019, showcasing his exceptional skills on the mat. Additionally, he holds the prestigious title of a bronze medalist at the BJJ No-Gi World Championships, cementing his status as a top-tier competitor. During our conversation, we delved into various captivating topics. One highlight was Lachlan's involvement in a groundbreaking initiative where he was entrusted with overseeing a $100,000 donation aimed at supporting aspiring Jiu-Jitsu athletes in Australia. One of the crucial criteria for these grants was to be a drug-free athlete, a subject that has been a hot topic within the sport, especially surrounding figures like Gordon Ryan. Ironically, it was Gordon himself who once accused Lachlan of using steroids, leading to Derek from More Plates, More Dates creating a video based on questionable evidence provided by Gordon. We also explored the nuances of teaching, learning, and coaching styles in Jiu-Jitsu. Lachlan shared his unique approach, incorporating his university-level Jiu-Jitsu education acquired from Submeta, both in the gym with his competitors and for subscribers worldwide. Furthermore, we delved into the importance of strength training and how strength, flexibility, and even being the smaller participant can offer advantages in the world of grappling. Our host, Mikael, played a pivotal role in steering this enlightening conversation. With a long-standing relationship with Lachlan, having received his black belt from him, and his experience training with the esteemed John Danaher, Mikael provided valuable insights throughout the episode. This episode is an absolute treat for combat athletes and Jiu-Jitsu fanatics alike. So sit back, relax, and tune in to gain exclusive knowledge from one of the most accomplished practitioners in the field. Your Host: Jack Boon (Founder of Living Rewired / Health & Performance Coach) Guests: Ben Cant (Health Educator, Nutrition & Strength Coach) Welcome to the Living Rewired podcast, where we delve deep into the world of health, fitness, and personal growth. In this episode, we had the privilege of sitting down with the incredible Ben Cant, a true industry leader in the health and fitness space and someone I personally look up to as a mentor. With a background in biochemistry and a passion for bodybuilding, Ben's expertise has shaped his nutritional literacy and methodologies, making him a sought-after coach among a wide range of clientele and fellow professionals. We wasted no time diving into the controversial topic of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) in the industry and the ongoing debate surrounding transparency. Together, we explored the delicate balance between personal choice and public disclosure when it comes to PED use. Should there be more transparency, or is it a matter best left to individual discretion? Our candid conversation shed light on the nuances of this sensitive issue, challenging conventional wisdom and sparking a thought-provoking dialogue. Moving on, we tackled the impact of social media on health and nutrition. While the digital age has brought a wealth of information to our fingertips, we discussed how the pursuit of attention, clicks, and likes has led to a prioritization of content that may not always serve our best interests. Unraveling the complexities of the online health and fitness landscape, we explored how to navigate the noise and focus on what truly matters: sustainable, evidence-based practices that improve our well-being. As the conversation unfolded, we couldn't help but delve into the trending topics in training. We examined the importance of volume and how it can sometimes be used as a band-aid solution to compensate for poor training quality. Together, we acknowledged the positive changes we've witnessed in the general population's approach to fitness, noting improvements in technique and standards within commercial gyms today. But it wasn't just surface-level discussions; we dug deeper into the world of advanced testing and blood analysis tools. While these technologies hold immense potential for optimizing health and performance, we also confronted the barriers and challenges that exist within the current medical system. We explored the need for more collaboration between doctors, general practitioners, and experts in the field to harness the full power of these diagnostic tools. Our goal throughout this episode was to empower our listeners with valuable lessons that can be implemented into their daily lives to support their health and performance. Whether you're an athlete, a fitness enthusiast, or simply someone looking to enhance your well-being, Ben Cant's insights and expertise will leave you with a fresh perspective and actionable strategies. Your Host: Jack Boon (Founder of Living Rewired / Health & Performance Coach) Co-Host: Mikael Yahaya (Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) Guests: Kadek (The Blind Warrior) Get ready to be inspired by an extraordinary journey on the latest episode of Living Rewired! We had the honour of sitting down with a remarkable person who is a completely blind jiu-jitsu athlete who fearlessly shares his story of resilience and triumph. In a twist of fate, this incredible individual became blind from two seperate events. One at 10 years old with an incident involving a knife, and a second time at 20 in a cowardly act of violence carried out by a group of other men. For nine long years, Kadek battled depression and comforted his pain with food addiction, ultimately reaching a point of despair that led to an attempted suicide. The path to recovery started with a five-week stay at the Alfred Hospital's psych ward in Melbourne, where you could say the penny dropped and his story started to take a turn for the better. Through sheer determination and an unwavering spirit, this warrior discovered the power of jiu-jitsu. It became more than just a martial art—it became a lifeline. The jiu-jitsu community embraced him with open arms, offering support, understanding, and a sense of belonging they had been craving for years. This was by far my favourite conversation I've ever had on the podcast and without doubt delivered the most value in terms of perspective and inspiration. Join us as we delve into the depths of this awe-inspiring tale. Prepare to witness the strength of the human spirit and the extraordinary resilience that can be found within the human mind. This episode will leave you with a renewed sense of hope and a deeper understanding of the power of connection and acceptance. I can't wait to have Kadek back for future episodes and I know you will feel the same. In many ways, this mans life has only just begun, and I am excited to see the impact he leaves on this world which starts by telling this story.
