In the final chapter of Military Culture Shift, I reference a theory of reconstitution written by Stoney Portis, after he commanded the 3-61 CAV troops that survived the now historic Battle of COP Keating and needed to somehow become mission-ready again. Reading his reflection on what it took to wholistically serve the battle-weary troops who had earned every right to hang up the one tattered uniform they had left, I knew it was a case study on what it would take to reconstitute an entire culture as well. So I invited now LT COL Stoney Portis to join Matt and me in a discussion about their shared sacred space in hopes it could validate the sacred spaces in your own life, but also inspire the healing of us all. Starting in 2008, cell phones and social media quickly escalated into our daily lives. Millennials filled the lower ranks of the force while op-tempos reached exhausting levels and sequestration tainted the beginning of a second decade of war as it forced us to dangerously downsize. The “halo effect” left many Gen X and older Millennials, confused- trying to reconcile their positive expectations of the military with reality. Technology provided a megaphone to an eager and fearless generation that had a lot to say, and access to influential leaders who, they felt, needed to hear it. In Chapter 6, I shared the story of Amy, a millennial, a journalist for Military.com, and a military spouse who gave voice to the betrayal she and other families felt as service members were handed pink slips instead of promotions. Amy was just one of many examples of how Millennials aimed to bring about change. Amy later became an editor for Military.com and is known as one of the most competent voices on a lot of military issues, including understanding the Tricare system. I asked Amy to come on the podcast to share what she remembers from that decade, but also the shifts she saw in the culture as she covered it over the years. This podcast is based on the book Military Culture Shift by clinical consultant and SME on military family culture, Corie Weathers. This podcast offers leaders an opportunity to understand the growing shifts happening within the military culture as an immersive supplement to the book. Based on 15 years of research, counseling, and teaching the military culture across all branches. Gain insights on changing perspectives within the culture, generational shifts in authority, the impact of Department of Defense budget decisions, emerging social trends within the military community, and the cumulative effect of two decades of the War on Terror on military family wellness. Corie sits down with military historian Dr. Edward A. Gutiérrez who studied the Doughboys from WW1. Dr. Gutiérrez specifically researched how a sense of honor and duty were engrained in the everyday culture of Americans prior to WW1 propelling many of them to enlist in the war. In this talk, Dr Gutiérrez suggests that as a culture moves away from embracing suffering, and even war and death, we lose cohesiveness, our humanity, and resilience as a society. He also shares how key motivations of honor and duty represented something different than it does today. Dr. Edward A. One theme that has run through this season of Restless Hearts is finding resources to help us process the seemingly endless barrage of "stuff" that can happen in our world more broadly and in our particular lives. So... Garret called up a few old friends of his to have a conversation about how art and music open up space to process everything life can throw at you. Today he talks with Latifah Alattas (Page CXVI, Moda Spira, Porters Gate, Common Hymnal) and David Wilton (Loud Harp, A Boy and His Kite) as they encourage us to create practices and spaces that allow our emotions to catch up with our reality, intentionally fail in the security of a loving friendship, and make space for the Holy Spirit to help metabolize grief. Cultivated veteran Latifah Alattas returns to the podcast this week to talk about life, faith, and creative work after divorce. When her marriage ended in 2017, it derailed a host of dreams and left her asking hard questions about forgiveness, healing, and relationships. Her work in churches was almost entirely halted, and for months she had to attend to her own body and soul to begin healing from the trauma. A year later, she released "Divorce," an album of raw songs exploring the painful emotions and aftermath of that experience. Host Mike Cosper and Latifah discuss the record, the events leading up to and since, and how creative life goes on after loss. Plus: Another Cultivated veteran, Melanie Penn, stops by to share about her release "More Alive Vol. 1", a collection of hope-filled songs written in quarantine and COVID. Cultivated is a production of Christianity Today. This episode was produced by Mike Cosper. It was edited by Mark Owens Our theme song is “Eden was a Garden” by Roman Candle. Music in this episode was by Moda Spira, Page CXVI, and Melanie Penn.
I met Latifah Alattas last year when we started collaborating on a new project (The Fun Parts Podcast). I was immediately drawn to her creativity, her infectious laughter, and her commitment to honesty. She's a singer/songwriter who has written under many different monikers, including Moda Spira and Page CXVI. Latifah just released a new album called All (as Page CXVI). It's gorgeous, including old hymns she's rewritten to have gender-inclusive language and also some incredible original songs. You can check out Latifah's work at ModaSpira.com and PageCXVI.com, and you can follow her on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Enjoy!

I recorded this episode based on a blog post I wrote a few years ago when the Me Too movement was just getting started. The blog was titled "An Ode to the Women Who are Too Much." We need to hear those voices, to hear their stories, and to stop telling women they are too much. Click here to read "An Ode to the Women Who are Too Much." I also mentioned Sue Monk Kidd's gorgeous new book, The Book of Longings. It's an imaginative story centered on the question, "What if Jesus had a wife?" The main character is Ana, the wife of Jesus, who had a voice that needed to be heard. And, as Sue Monk Kidd suggests in the Author's Note at the end of the book: if any woman's voice would have been silenced, if Jesus did have a wife, it certainly would have been hers. So, to the women who are "too much:" We need you. The song Bang (from the album Divorce by Moda Spira - a.k.a my friend Latifah Alattas) was used by permission.
