Top Stories for January 20th Publish Date: January 20th From the BG AD Group Studio Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Tuesday, January 20th and Happy Birthday to Buzz Aldrin I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by KIA Mall of Georgia. Stone Mountain Park preparing to host Lunar New Year Festival 'Be ready to belly laugh' — Aurora Theatre staging 'The Play That Goes Wrong' as part of 30th anniversary season Gwinnett Chamber welcomes new board members for 2026 All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: Kia Mall of Georgia - Sugar Hill Ice Skating Rink STORY 1: Stone Mountain Park preparing to host Lunar New Year Festival Stone Mountain Park is ringing in the Year of the Horse with its fourth annual Lunar New Year Festival, running weekends from Feb. 14 to March 1. And let me tell you, it’s not your average celebration. Think lighted floats, dragon and lion dances, live music, and a parade that’ll make you forget it’s February. Oh, and the food? Double the food trucks this year, all serving up Asian-inspired dishes you’ll want seconds of. The highlight? A jaw-dropping Lunar New Year Drone & Light Show. Picture hundreds of drones lighting up the sky, some even launching fireworks. Yes, fireworks. And the finale? A massive light show projected onto the mountain itself, complete with special effects and a fireworks extravaganza. Want to learn something new? Try calligraphy, paper art, or knot tying with instructors from the Chinese Cultural School of Atlanta. Or just soak in the vibes—ambassadors in traditional dress, a Lighted Reflection Walk-Way for wishes and prayers, and photo ops galore. It’s a celebration you don’t want to miss. Details at stonemountainpark.com. STORY 2: 'Be ready to belly laugh' — Aurora Theatre staging 'The Play That Goes Wrong' as part of 30th anniversary season Heidi McKerley is back at Aurora Theatre, this time directing the chaos-filled comedy The Play That Goes Wrong—a perfect fit for the theatre’s 30th anniversary season. McKerley, a Suzi Bass Award-winning veteran of Atlanta’s theatre scene, knows her way around a laugh, having previously directed Noises Off and The Italian American Reconciliation at Aurora. The play, a fan favorite first staged at Aurora three years ago, runs Jan. 22–Feb. 15. Written by Henry Lewis, Henry Shields, and Jonathan Sayer, it’s a farcical take on a local theatre troupe’s disastrous attempt to stage a murder mystery. What should audiences expect? “Nonstop belly laughs,” McKerley promised. “It’s high-energy, ridiculous, and exactly the kind of escape we all need right now.” STORY 3: Gwinnett Chamber welcomes new board members for 2026 The Gwinnett Chamber just welcomed 28 new faces to its 2026 Board of Directors, kicking things off with an orientation that dove into the Chamber’s mission, goals, and the big responsibilities ahead. The board isn’t just about strategy—it’s about reflecting the community. “We’re intentional about diversity—industries, cultures, perspectives,” said CEO Nick Masino. “This board champions business and connection.” New members include leaders from healthcare, real estate, banking, and more, like Vandana Aggarwal of Aggarwal Real Estate, Wendy Palmer of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, and Beto Tenorio of Norsan Group. It’s a powerhouse lineup ready to drive Gwinnett’s growth. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: Ingles Markets STORY 4: Snellville reaches major milestone with opening of The Grove's Towne Center Market Like most teenagers, Kierra Mays couldn’t wait to leave her hometown of Snellville. After graduating from South Gwinnett High in 2015, she had big dreams—bigger than her small town, or so she thought. Even when she launched Keys Cakery, her bakery business, her sights were set on Atlanta. A food hall in the city? That was the goal. But life has a funny way of circling back. Instead of the bright lights of Atlanta, Mays found herself opening her first brick-and-mortar shop right in Snellville, as one of the first vendors at The Towne Center Market in The Grove downtown district. The market, anchored by Crooked Can Brewing, officially opened with a ribbon-cutting last week—a moment years in the making for Snellville leaders. Mayor Barbara Bender reflected on the city’s journey: “Snellville didn’t have a downtown. It got mowed over by highways. We needed a place for people to gather, to walk, to connect.” The Grove is that place. It’s not just a food hall—it’s a mix of apartments, a library, coworking spaces, restaurants, and even a splash pad. It’s a downtown built from scratch, designed to feel like it grew over time. For Mays, it’s more than just a business opportunity. “Snellville’s growing,” she said. “There’s a young crowd moving in, and this market is perfect for them. It’s not just a place to eat—it’s a place to hang out, to connect. It feels like home.” STORY 5: Senate bill would hold down property tax increases that fund Georgia schools Georgia homeowners might soon see their property tax hikes capped at the inflation rate—yes, even for school taxes. A new bill from Senate Republicans would force all school systems to limit tax increases tied to rising home values. Here’s the catch: most school districts—71% of them—voted last year to reject a similar cap. Why? Because it slashes funding for public education. If this bill passes, schools would lose the ability to tax property values that outpace inflation, leaving them scrambling to cover rising costs. Sen. Chuck Hufstetler, the bill’s sponsor, argues it’s about fairness. “People are seeing double-digit tax increases. We need to limit it to inflation—everyone has to live within their means.” The bill would also impact city and county governments that opted out of last year’s cap. Lt. Gov. Burt Jones called it a priority, saying it’s about “putting more money back in Georgians’ pockets.” Meanwhile, other tax proposals are swirling at the Capitol—like eliminating income taxes or ending homestead property taxes altogether. Gov. Brian Kemp? He’s pushing for tax rebates and a slight income tax cut. We’ll be right back. Break 3: EAGLE THEATRE STORY 6: Buford High School earns Gold distinction on 2025 AP School Honor Roll Buford High School just snagged a spot on the 2025 Advanced Placement School Honor Roll, earning the coveted Gold distinction from the College Board. Translation? They’re crushing it when it comes to preparing students for college and making rigorous coursework accessible to more kids. But wait—it gets better. Buford students also earned Platinum recognition in College Credit and College Optimization. And the stats? Impressive. Last spring, 691 students took 1,407 AP exams, with a jaw-dropping 90% scoring a 3 or higher. The school’s average score? 3.81—well above state and global averages. Oh, and here’s the kicker: the Buford Board of Education covers the cost of every AP exam. No barriers, just opportunity. STORY 7: Norcross' Maddi Yi to Play Soccer for the US Air Force Academy Norcross senior Maddi Yi is heading to the United States Air Force Academy to play college soccer—she made it official on Sunday. A standout midfielder, Yi’s been racking up all-region honors for the past two seasons while also playing club soccer with Concorde Fire Platinum. Oh, and did I mention she’s rocking a 4.3 GPA? Yeah, she’s the real deal. Balancing academics, high-level club soccer, and high school play isn’t easy, but Yi’s made it look effortless. Now, she’s taking her talent (and that work ethic) to the next level. The Air Force Academy just scored big. We’ll have closing comments after this Break 4: GCPL Passport Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today’s Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. How does the human eye transform waves of light into the vivid, detailed experience we call vision? In this episode of CortexCast, we follow photons on their journey from the moment they strike the retina to the point where visual signals begin to take shape. We explore the cascade of biochemical reactions triggered by molecules such as retinal and rhodopsin, the roles of rod and cone cells in night and colour vision, and the vulnerability of the central retina in age-related macular degeneration. We then turn to the networks of bipolar and horizontal cells, where visual information is funnelled, filtered, and sharpened into receptive fields — the brain's earliest building blocks of images. Along the way, we uncover how a patch of neural tissue at the back of the eye becomes the gateway to our entire visual world.

Top Stories for September 9th Publish Date: September 9th PRE-ROLL: From The BG AD Group Studio, Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Tuesday, September 9th and Happy Birthday to Ottis Redding I’m Peyton Spurlock and here are your top stories presented by KIA Mall of Georgia Stone Mountain Park's Pumpkin Festival returns with all-new glow-in-the-dark attractions Gwinnett Democrats blast federal, state leaders over raid at Hyundai-LG plant Buford Dam Road temporarily closing near Lake Lanier on Sept. 11 All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe! Break 1: Kia MOG STORY 1: Stone Mountain Park's Pumpkin Festival returns with all-new glow-in-the-dark attractions Stone Mountain Park is about to feel like a storybook come to life. Starting Sept. 13, the Pumpkin Festival: Play by Day, Glow by Night is back—and it’s bigger, brighter, and, honestly, a little more magical this year. At night, the park transforms. Picture this: Cinderella floating through the air in a sparkling gown, lighting up a massive pumpkin tree. Then there’s the glow-in-the-dark pumpkin parade—floats, fairy tale characters, and a dance party you can’t help but join. Oh, and the grand finale? The World’s Largest Pumpkin Drone & Light Show, complete with fireworks. By day, it’s all about family fun—rides, glowing pumpkins, and even mini-golf. This runs through Nov. 2. STORY 2: Gwinnett Democrats blast federal, state leaders over raid at Hyundai-LG plant Gwinnett County leaders didn’t hold back Friday, slamming federal and state officials over a massive immigration raid at the Hyundai-LG plant in Bryan County. Nearly 475 workers—many South Korean nationals—were arrested, sparking outrage in Georgia’s largest Korean-American community. Federal agents called it a criminal investigation, not an immigration raid, but the fallout is undeniable. STORY 3: Buford Dam Road temporarily closing near Lake Lanier on Sept. 11 Heads up, drivers—Buford Dam Road near Lake Lanier’s southern end is shutting down for a day. On Sept. 11, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will close the road to patch potholes, fix guardrails, and handle some tree work. If you’re in the area, plan to detour via State Route 20. Oh, and heads up—parks along the road, like Buford Dam Park and West Bank Park, will also be closed. It’s just one day, but still, maybe pack a little extra patience. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: GWINNET FAIR STORY 4: Many Georgia teachers say they are overworked, underpaid and exposed to violence  Georgia’s teachers are burned out. Overworked, underpaid, and dealing with everything from disruptive classrooms to outright violence, many are questioning how much longer they can stay. A new survey from the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) paints a grim picture: two-thirds of educators feel exhausted, and a quarter report severe teacher shortages at their schools. Even worse? 8% say they’ve been physically assaulted by students—double that for special education staff. Low pay, second jobs, and unpaid college debt only add to the stress. Something’s gotta give. STORY 5: Buford Corn Maze opens Saturday Fall’s not officially here yet, but the Buford Corn Maze is already gearing up for its 17th season of autumn fun—and honestly, who’s complaining? The Maze started Saturday, the 32-acre farm on Bennett Road is bringing back all the classics: the corn maze (of course), pumpkin patch, hayrides, pony rides, and the Kid’s Corner. Oh, and don’t forget the Haunted Forest—it opens Sept. 26 with this year’s theme, “Into the Twisted Hollow.” Spooky, right? New this year? Expanded animal encounters, carnival games, and a bigger kids’ play area. Tickets? Online or at the gate. STORY 6: ART BEAT: Lionheart Theatre returns all-female cast production of 'Radio T.B.S. Trailer Park Broadcasting Scandals' “Radio T.B.S.” is a fan favorite, so of course it’s part of Lionheart’s 25th Anniversary Season. Running Sept. 12–28, this all-female comedy stars longtime anchors Debbie McLaughlin and Tanya Gilmer, who’ve been with the show since its first run. Set in the Luna Del Mar Manufactured Home Oasis (aka “The Penicillin Capital of Central Florida”), the play follows radio hosts Vesta Poteet and Dixie Mandrell as they dish on everything from the Miss Manatee Contest to a “Jesus and Elvis” tribute. Oh, and those “Gone with the Wind” collector plates? Scarlett O’Hara looks suspiciously like Ernest Borgnine. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., with matinees on Sundays and Sept. 27. Tickets are $18 for adults, $16 for seniors, students, and military. Complimentary desserts at intermission—yes, really. Get tickets at lionhearttheatre.org or call 404-919-4022. But hurry—this one sells out fast. STORY 7: Suwanee wants tax rate to stay the same as past 13 years Suwanee residents, get ready to possibly see a familiar number on your property tax bill this fall. The City Council just voted to tentatively keep the millage rate at 4.93 mills—the same rate it’s been for 13 years. But here’s the catch: it’s slightly above the rollback rate, meaning a 3.88% tax increase is coming your way. Why? The city’s $20.8 million budget for FY 2026, which kicked off July 1, needs funding. It’s 7.8% bigger than last year’s and includes five new full-time positions, $650,000 for landscaping, and $606,000 for capital projects. Public hearings? Sept. 11 and Sept. 23. We’ll have closing comments after this. Break 4: Ingles Markets Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today’s Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. GDP Script/ Top Stories for January 21st Publish Date: January 21st From The BG AD Group Studio, Welcome to the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Today is Tuesday, January 21st and Happy Birthday to Jack Nicklaus ***01.21.24 - BIRTHDAY - JACK NICKLAUS*** I’m Keith Ippolito and here are your top stories presented by KIA Mall of Georgia Aurora Theatre Preparing For Annual 'Phenomenon' Event Stone Mountain Park Hosting Lunar New Year Festival Gwinnett government may opt out of statewide homestead exemption. Here's why. All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: Kia MOG (07.14.22 KIA MOG) STORY 1: Aurora Theatre Preparing For Annual 'Phenomenon' Event Aurora Theatre's "Phenomenon: A Night in Lawrence Vegas" promises to be the premier celebration of the year, marking the theatre's 30th anniversary. Scheduled for February 28 at the Lawrenceville Arts Center, the event features Vegas-inspired entertainment, gaming, and live performances. Proceeds support Aurora Theatre's mission, with a fundraising goal of $200,000. Highlights include cabaret singers, blackjack, poker, and auctions. Last year's event attracted over 200 patrons with prizes like a Las Vegas trip. Sponsors include Delta Air Lines and Primerica, with sponsorships still available. For more details, visit auroratheatre.com. STORY 2: Stone Mountain Park Hosting Lunar New Year Festival The third annual Lunar New Year Festival at Stone Mountain Park celebrates the Year of the Snake, honoring Korean, Chinese, Vietnamese, and other lunar calendar cultures. Held on select weekends from January 25 to February 9, the festival features a Lunar New Year Drone and Light Show, parades with lighted floats, dragon and lion dances, and cultural crafts. Guests can enjoy traditional dance, music, and educational activities like calligraphy and paper art. The event concludes daily with a Drone Show and a spectacular Light Show with fireworks. For more details, visit stonemountainpark.com. STORY 3: Gwinnett government may opt out of statewide homestead exemption. Here's why. Gwinnett County officials plan to opt out of a new statewide floating homestead exemption, favoring their existing Value Offset Exemption (VOE) for better tax breaks. The VOE, in place since 2001, freezes property tax values at the base year, protecting homeowners from rising market values. The county's decision follows other local governments opting out, with public hearings scheduled before the March 1 deadline. The county's property tax is separate from school and city taxes, which often increase with market values. The VOE has saved homeowners significant amounts, as illustrated by examples from Suwanee and Auburn. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We’ll be right back Break 2: Tom Wages (08.05.24 OBITS_FINAL) STORY 4: Gwinnett School Board Chair calls education the 'social rights issue of our time' during MLK address At a Martin Luther King Jr. Day event, Gwinnett County Board of Education Chairwoman Adrienne Simmons emphasized education and literacy as today's key civil rights issues. She highlighted the global illiteracy problem and the importance of literacy for accessing better opportunities and improving life quality. Simmons stressed that education is a lasting asset, crucial for success and personal development. Buford City Schools educator Tiffany Thomas echoed these sentiments, linking education to democracy and resilience, and criticized efforts to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education, underscoring African-Americans' determination to pursue education despite obstacles. STORY 5: More cold weather is headed for Gwinnett this week Metro Atlanta is experiencing a cold snap, with temperatures forecasted to stay between the low 20s and mid-30s through Thursday, dipping into the teens on Wednesday morning. A winter weather advisory predicts 1 to 2 inches of snow from Tuesday morning to Wednesday morning, potentially impacting commutes. Wind chills are expected in the single digits. Monday's extreme cold led to the cancellation of Gwinnett County's Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade. Despite temperatures rising to the low 30s by Monday afternoon, conditions remained below freezing, prompting caution for slippery roads. Drone News: Drone Light Show Injury in Orlando, XTEND Wins DOD Drone Contract, & TFRs in NY and NJ

Drone News Update

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 27, 2024 4:54

Welcome to your weekly UAS news update we have 3 stories for you: Drone Light Show injures kid in Orlando, Israeli drone company wins big DOD drone contract, and navigating TFRs in New York and New Jersey. First story this week is a bit of a sad one. A child was injured at an Orlando drone show last week after a drone hit him in the chest during a show near Lake Eola Park. The 7-year old boy was taken to the hospital and it was later reported that he required emergency cardiac surgery due to damage to a heart valve. Approximately 15 minutes into the performance, drones started falling out of the sky, according to a video and witness statements. The show was put on by SkyElement, a very reputable company that has a long-standing of safe operation. SkyElement puts out dozens of shows around the country yearly, and even holds 11 Guiness world records, including flying a show with 5000 drones a month ago during Thanksgiving. It's unclear exactly what happened, but it would be out of touch for me to speculate at the moment. We will follow up when the NTSB concludes its investigation and releases its findings. We wish the young boy a prompt recovery. Second story this week, XTEND, an Israeli defense tech company, has secured an $8.8 million contract with the U.S. Department of Defense. The contract is to deliver advanced AI-powered drones called PSIO sUAS. These tactical drones, capable of operating indoors and outdoors, combine artificial intelligence with real-time precision strike capabilities. The drones are designed for rapid deployment in urban and open-field settings, and reduce risks for soldiers while enhancing operational flexibility. Manufactured in the U.S., these drones align with defense production standards and are set for delivery in early 2025, following extensive testing. XTEND's systems are already in use globally, including by the Israel Defense Forces, showcasing their value in modern warfare. For our last story, I want to discuss the recent temporary flight restrictions that were put in place in New Jersey and New York. Most of those are 1 nautical mile in radius and around sensitive infrastructures, such as substations, railroad depots, or even nuclear power plants. Part 107 operators who have a valid statement of work and show a need to be in the restricted airspace are eligible to request SGI waivers. SGI stands the Special Governmental Interest and is typically used by public safety agencies, but is also available to "regular" part 107 operators. According to the FAA website, "To apply for a waiver through the SGI process, you must be an existing Part 107 remote pilot with a current certificate OR a public agency with an existing Certificate of Waiver or Authorization or COA." I will put a link in the description for those who are interested in applying (https://www.faa.gov/uas/advanced_operations/emergency_situations) Last note before we go, we have the winner of the Community photo contest for December! Congratulations to Bill Heiser won with this photo titled "Highway to the Pass". And that's it for this week and even this year. I want to thank you all for tuning in every single week. We are getting close to 300 consecutive weeks of news update, and we couldn't do this without all of you. I and the entire team at Pilot Institute wish everybody a Happy New Year. I hope it will be full of growth for your company if that's what you do, but more importantly I hope it is filled with many hours of flying. Please continue to be safe and vigilant, and remember to be a mentor to those who got their first drone under the tree.

Hey listeners, it's time for the Light Show with Scott Chaverri, founder of Mito Red Light! He is doing some amazing work with his therapeutic red light exposure and the familiar panels that you can find on mitoredlight.com, the most powerful and the most affordable red light panels on the market. But, he's also an inventor at heart who loves to spend his time tinkering with all kinds of different technology. And at the end of the show, you're gonna hear about some of his dreams and big picture ideas that are really fascinating—one of them has to do with how unhealthy our typical sources of indoor light are and the popularity of energy efficient LED lights, which are constantly flickering (120 times per second)—something that is not good for the brain. But as you will hear, Scott is actually working on a solution for that, and it could change the planet. In this episode you will learn about the wonderful story of how red light therapy can improve your health and the ways it improves your mitochondrial function will finally be explained in detail so you can really understand all the science and the research behind this and why red light panels work. You will hear some great takeaways from this show, such as why 10 minutes is the ideal exposure time and why more is not better with your red light practice. It was so interesting to hear Scott explain the whys behind the health practice of therapeutic red light exposure—a health practice I have been committed to for the past five years now. Every day, I devotedly stand in front of my panel, exposing my eyeballs and other important balls to the red lights for the optimal duration. If you want to know the science behind why I do this and why this works so efficiently, you will love listening to this informative show with Scott.   TIMESTAMPS: Scott Chaverri is here to talk about therapeutic red light exposure. Many of the indoor lights we have are not healthy.  [00:53] Scott started on this journey of exploring the scientific benefits of red light therapy when he himself was dealing with health problems. [03:15] Red light therapy helps with testosterone. [07:18] How does red light therapy benefit sleep? [10:32] So the safest and most beneficial parts of that UV spectrum are helping with mitochondrial function, cell repair, removal of waste products, that kind of thing. [14:12] If you're worried about photoaging your skin and you don't want to be in direct sunlight, go to a green space, sit in the shade. [20:59] Do we always need to wear sunglasses? [26:17] Spending too much time in the sun is counterproductive. How is red light therapy different? [30:47] So many people tend to trade their health for dollars. [36:11] Besides red light therapy, what else is going on in this area? [40:06] Some people might put green tea bags on their crow's feet area for part of the red light therapy. Sometimes it helps with hair growth. [42:53] How does a hydrogen water bottle work? [48:26] The LED lights that we are exposed to so much have some drawbacks.  In the heart of Portugal, amidst rolling hills and quaint villages where time ticks just a tad slower, lies Fatima—a place destined to be catapulted from pastoral obscurity to celestial fame. Its 1917, a world at war and a country teetering on the brink of political upheaval, when suddenly, three young shepherds claim to have seen something extraordinary. Not just any extraordinary, but a luminous lady brighter than the sun herself, right in the middle of their everyday sheep-herding duties. It's a tale blending the divine with the ordinary, where miracles meet mud, and faith clashes with skepticism. Buckle up, because this isn't just history—it's a heavenly spectacle that has left the world pondering ever since. The year is 1917. The world is embroiled in the chaos of World War I – a conflict so devastating that it's often referred to as 'The War to End All Wars.' Spoiler alert: it wasn't. But let's zoom in on a small, sleepy village in Portugal. Welcome to Fatima, where the most exciting event of the day is usually the local shepherds chasing down a particularly rebellious sheep. Oh yes, we're talking about that kind of excitement.
