Send us Fan MailIn this episode, I'm joined by Nike Running's Global Head Coach, Chris Bennett, for a conversation about running—and all the ways it mirrors life. We talk about comparison, self-talk, burnout, knowing when to rest, celebrating progress, and learning to measure success by more than a number. Whether you run every day, haven't run since school, or simply need a reminder to be kinder to yourself, Chris has a way of making you see both running and life a little differently.Connect with Chris: Instagram · Coach Bennett's Newsletter · LinkedIn · Coach Bennett's Podcast · Chris's new book — This Is About Running. “Running doesn't want you to suffer. Running wants you to feel great and powerful. It's just that we're humans.”My guest for today's episode is Coach Chris Bennett — Nike Running Global Head Coach, voice behind hundreds of guided runs on the Nike Run Club app, and now first-time author. His debut book is called *This Is About Running. This Is Not About Running.* — a title he decided on in 2007 when he adopted the mantra while coaching high school cross country at Christian Brothers Academy in New Jersey.Coach Bennett is one of the most distinctive voices in running because of the way he thinks about what running actually is and what it's actually for. He's a tremendous storyteller. In this one you'll hear him tell the stories of he started off in coaching by sending cold emails to his old high school every year asking about a coaching job and kept sending them for nine straight years, expecting a no each time. Why he gets to mile 22 of marathon courses because that's where doubt creeps in and nobody's carrying you anymore, but he's there to see people triumph. I've loved hearing him talk about how he watched Joan Benoit Samuelson win the 1984 Olympic marathon when he was a kid and it changed his life. He's spent years telling abbreviated versions of that story before finally getting to put the whole thing on paper. Now he's done it. The book has almost no numbers in it. Instead, the cornerstone of his philosophy is that the goal of coaching is to eventually make yourself unnecessary as a coach. You work your way down until the athlete doesn't need you anymore. By the end of the book, he wants you to need him less.In this conversation, we get into a lot. We pick up from his last appearance on the show in 2020 on why the COVID running boom is structurally different from every previous one and why it didn't end. He makes the case against screaming coaches and the phrase “no regrets.” He shares why he says “you're going to suck less” instead of “you're going to get better”. I ask what surprised him in the recording studio when he went to narrate the chapters about heartbreak. I also give him my review of the book and I hope he ends up using it on the Amazon page for it. "I think it's a great point with writing. You know early on you realize like putting pen to paper or starting to type early on was a massive achievement. There were huge gains, and now you're still grinding to figure out like 'I don't know how to end this chapter. How do I not know how to end a chapter? I've been writing for 20 years. What's wrong with me?' And you realize like this is the gig. This is part of the fun, though. It's also part of the grind, which is why if you asked a runner their their most fun runs, they're usually their hardest runs, and it's the same thing with any other passion," says Coach Chris Bennett, author of This is About Running. This is Not About Running. It's Coach Chris Bennett! He is the Nike Running Global Head Coach and now he's the author of This is About Running. This is Not About Running.: Lessons for Between and Beyond the Start and Finish Line. It's published by Dey St.If you're looking for workouts and training plans and pace charts and Zone 2 up the wazoo, this is NOT the book for you. But if you're looking for a 220-page metaphor for being a better writer, a better person, and yes, maybe even a better runner, then you're going to love this book. I read it twice. The chapters are, by and large, lean and range from confidence to doubt to hope and play and regrets. Maybe this podcast is about writing and not about writing.A little more about Coach Bennett, who is something of a real-life Ted Lasso. Prior to working with Nike, he was a high school history teacher who helped coach one of the most successful running programs in the U.S. He attended the Univ. of North Carolina where he captained the XC and Track teams. After college, he spent five years on the Olympic Development Nike Farm Team out of Palo Alto, CA. He used to live in Oregon, but moved back to his native New Jersey. In this episode, we cover a lot of ground including: Why longform content is not dead How he went from working in finance to Nike How he cultivated his coaching philosophy Confidence vs. Arrogance Vulnerability Reckoning with and the fear of success The power of just focusing on yourself Self-sabotage And how running helped his writingI'd pair this episode Ep. 419 with Maggie Gigandet and her Atavist story about an ultrarunning couple and Ep. 525 with Mary Cain and her memoir of abuse at Nike called This is Not About Running.

In recent days, the very notion of a free, fair, representative democracy has taken some body blows. First, the United States Supreme Court undercutting minorities having any fair shot at representation in Congress, and then second, the Virginia Supreme Court undercutting the express will of the Virginia voters on the redistricting front. So Glenn has decided - between now and the midterms, he's going to interview and highlight as many congressional candidates as he can: candidates who are willing to be democracy warriors, to take the gloves off and to fight for free, fair elections.Kicking this off - Glenn sat down with a great young candidate running for Congress to represent the people of California's 3rd congressional district, Chris Bennett.Find Chris at: https://www.bennettforca.comFind Glenn on Substack: glennkirschner.substack.comSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

What if the end of the world isn't something we're waiting for… but something being set in motion? In this chilling episode, we explore disturbing claims that some leaders may be viewing modern conflict—especially tensions with Iran, ancient Persia—not just as war, but as prophecy unfolding in real time. If belief begins to shape policy, where does that leave the rest of us? Joining us is Chris Bennett, a globally recognized author and researcher who has spent over three decades investigating the role of cannabis in ancient spirituality, religion, and sacred ritual. From Green Gold the Tree of Life to Cannabis: Lost Sacrament of the Ancient World, Bennett's work bridges mysticism, scripture, and history, with features in major outlets like the BBC, The Guardian, and The Washington Post. But his research goes deeper—into the dangerous intersection of Biblical prophecy and modern geopolitics. Bennett warns of a critical shift: when people stop interpreting prophecy… and start trying to fulfill it. Because when prophecy becomes policy, war is no longer avoidable— It becomes inevitable. Is Armageddon just a warning… or are we already walking into it?
